Christmas

December 25th, the day of Christmas is the day of celebration, fun and frolic. As the long awaited winter holidays arrive, Christmas spirit builds up. Lovely snowflakes, dear Santa, homes bedecked with whole range of Christmas star, mistletoe, the good-luck plant, ivy, laurels and Christmas tree are some of the inseparable parts of the picture. The soft music of Christmas carols and eagerness of children to open their gifts certainly lend unique warmth to the coldest day of the year.
The birth of Christ is perhaps the most popular festival around the world. The dark night sky, the chilly winter all just provide the perfect backdrop for the reigning red and green colors that cheer up the entire scenery. People visit their families and arrange some of the most lavish parties. The most awaited festival, the Christmas signifies love and kindness, joy and happiness. The holiday spirit of the season in one word is - infectious!

The festival of Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and conveys his message of love, tolerance and brotherhood. It's a celebration of humanity and mankind. Though Christmas is a primary festival of the Christian calendar, still it has a special significance in everyone's life. It is celebrated as a universal festival. The first mention of 25th December as the birth date of Jesus occurred in 336 A.D. in an early Roman calendar. That day onwards, this date is celebrated as the birth date of Jesus. In India, this festival has a special significance, since India is known for its unity in diversity. People from all religions take part in Christmas celebration as much as Indian Christians do.

For Christians, the Christmas season reaches its climax at midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Churches are decorated with candles, lights, evergreen branches, and bright red Poinsettias. People sing Christmas carols and listen to Holy Scriptures. Priests and ministers speak to the congregations about the coming of Christ and the need for peace and understanding among all people. Most churches also hold services on Christmas Day. The Christmas season ends on Epiphany, 6th January. In Western Christian churches, Epiphany celebrates the coming of the Wise Men to the Christ child.
Mangaloreans celebrate Christmas in a unique way by distributing “KUSWAR” i.e. homemade sweets and delicacies; reconcile with those who are pained or hurt; visit family members to share joy and sorrows and, later in the evening, make merry with joyous singingand dance.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
