Awareness programme on Climate Change Impact on Coastal India

A week long awareness programme for the youth on 'Climate Change Impact on Coastal India' was held at our college seminar hall on 8 Sept, 2009 by the Association of British Scholars, Mangalore chapter, British Council, Chennai and Extension Education Wing, College of Fisheries, Mangalore.

Dr.D.L.Prabhakara, the principal inaugurated the programme by symbolically watering a plant. Mr.Ashwath Rao, Lecturer, Dept of Electronics and Communication welcomed the gathering and also introduced the resource person of the day.

The resource person Dr.S.M.Shivaprakash, who is the Secretary of Association of British Scholars, Mangalore chapter spoke about the climate change affecting the entire world and also cautioned about its ill effects which will be affecting us in the near future. He also emphasized the need to create awareness among the people of coastal India in preventing the ecosystem from being damaged.

In the course of his presentation he also displayed to the students a few videos depicting the impact of climate change on several places particularly on Sunderbans in Calcutta. The talk was followed by a quiz competition for the students. Mr. Raghavendra Prabhu, Dept of MBA distributed the prizes to the students who secured the first and second place. Mr.Lokesh, Asst. Prof., Dept of MBA, compeered the programme.

TOXICS, the Association of CS & IS Inaugurated

Inauguration of the activities of TOXICS (Technically Outstanding Experts of Information & Computer Science Engineering Students), an association of Computer Science & Information Science students for the academic year 2009-10 was held on 7 Sept, 2009 at the college Seminar hall. On this occasion the freshers were welcomed to their respective branches by the senior students of Computer Science & Information Science. The programme was inaugurated by Mrs. Thanuja G. R., Technical Evangelist, Infosys Technologies, Mangalore. Addressing the students on 'Importance of Soft Skills in the Present Scenario and Current trends in Job market', Mrs. Thanuja said that the computer career avenues have undergone some dramatic changes in the last year. The present recession was preceded by the great boom in the field of computer industry. In spite of the recession there is a great demand for computer professionals even today. However, she added, the employability of the students depends upon a variety of factors including their level of written and oral communication skills, interview skills and their specialization. Speaking about the influence of Information Technology, she observed that even the students graduating from the Science and Arts streams need to equip themselves with Computer knowledge. Dr. Ravikumar H. M., Prof. & Head, Dept. of Electronics and communication presided over the function. In his Presidential address, he spoke about the different ways to make a student industry-ready. Dr. Nagesh H. R., Prof. & Head, Dept. of CSE/ISE & President of TOXICS welcomed the freshers to their respective branches and spoke about the importance of academic preparation and specialization

Orientation Programme For the First year Engineering Students

The three-day long orientation programme for the first year Engineering students was inaugurated in the college Seminar hall on 31 August, 2009. The programme began with the solemn lighting of the lamp by Dr. D.L. Prabhakara, the Principal, Dr. A.J.Antony Vice Principal, Mr. Devadas Hegde, the trustee in the presence of the heads of the various departments. At the outset, the Principal gave an overview of the college, faculty, infrastructure and the future plans of the institution. The vice-principal Dr. A.J. Antony briefed about the code of conduct. Prof.S.S Balakrishna, Dean(Planing & Development) welcomed and briefed about the future plans. Mrs. Nayana N. Patil, the Student Welfare Officer briefed the students on rules & regulations of the college. Prof. B.K. Prabhakar, coordinator of this orientation programme proposed the Vote of thanks. The co-cordinator of the orientation programme Mrs. Vishal Samartha compeered the programme. Experts from industry and academia addressed the students during the next two days of the orientation programme. Eminent personalities like Prof.Samaga, Former Prof. & HOD ( Mech), NITK, and Prof.Gonsalves, Principal, St.Joseph Engineering college , Vamanjoor, Mangalore were experts from academia. Mrs.Manjusha Bhatnagar, HR Manager, MRPL addressed the students on the challenges the students have to face from the industry and how they should equip themselves to face such situations.

Aids Campaign - 2009

As the Bhandary Foundation believes in the best possible service towards the needy, each year organizes varied programmes towards fighting against HIV/ AIDS menace. This year also apart from the routine activities various special programmes such as updating the teaching and non teaching staff regarding HIV/AIDS, including general public and general education colleges were the new avenues thought about. Prof. Shivalingappa Halli is known as Shiva Halli was the Chief Guest of the day, was welcomed traditionally to the institution inaugurated the campaign by lighting the lamp. In his Chief Guest's address, he appreciated the committed work towards the noble cause. In the presidential address Mrs. Prasanna Bhandary (Secretary, Bhandary Foundation) inspired all the staff for being so enthusiastic to put up dedicated work to fight against HIV/AIDS, which was the sole motto of beginning Bhandary Foundation. Prof. (Mrs.) Irene Veigas, Principal, Sahyadri College of Nursing welcomed the gathering, programme Coordinator Mrs. Jacintha Veigas explained about the activities which will be taken place on 13th, 14th & 15th of August 2009, in the name of fighting against HIV/AIDS. She also briefed about the Finale-09, which will be on December 1st 2009, a unique programme in coordination with the general public and general education colleges. Ms. Benedikta, Principal, Sahyadri School of Nursing proposed the vote of thanks.

Orientation Programme

An orientation programme for the Ist year students was held at the newly constructed seminar hall in the college premises on 04-Sep-2008. Mrs. Prasanna Bhandary, Secretary Bhandary foundation was the chief guest of the function. Madam addressed the gathering and advised the students to make the best use of the facilities and to become efficient engineers. Speaking on the occasion, the Principal Dr.D.L.Prabhakara, introduced the college, the infrastructure and the heads of the various departments. He stressed that students should excel in both academic and extra curricular activities. The Vice Principal Dr. A.J. Antony welcomed the gathering.

Student's welfare Officer, Mrs. Nayana N. Patil spoke about the rules and regulations of the college, the requirements for the various VTU examinations and the eligibility criteria. The heads of the departments introduced their departments and their faculty to the students. Few students from the IIIrd semester enlightened the gathering regarding the facilities at Sahyadri Institute of Technology. Professor S.S. Balakrishna, department of Mechanical engineering proposed the vote of thanks.
