CSE Faculty and CEO of Flotanomers, conduct an Online Workshop on “Drone Forensics”

The Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) across the world have increased the use of drones during the pandemic. Experts are raising awareness on the considerable risks that the drones are already beginning to pose at a staggering rate.
In a bid to counter the rising instances of drone misuse, Dr. Ananth Prabhu G., Professor, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering, who is also a Cyber-security Expert, alongwith Mr. Midhun Jyothis, CEO, Flotanomers, a Start-up at Sahyadri conducted an Online Workshop on “Drone Forensics” for 55 LEA Officers, 17 Drone Forensic Consultants and Enthusiasts across India on 14th June’2020.
The Workshop intended to create more individuals to work on security aspects by encouraging participants to create more indigenous machines to tackle the present potential threat of drones. The aim was to bring a small group together to discuss technology, create a local network of experts thus building an efficient system for our own nation.
Dr. Prabhu said Drones come with a wide spectrum of advantages. But, along with the positives, the sad truth about drones is that there are certain burning flaws like sudden crashes, hacker risks, and privacy issues that plague the technology.
Dr. Prabhu went on to say that people are wary that the technology is vulnerable. Drones have cameras, and with them being more accessible, it could be used to violate privacy of others.
In his concluding remarks he said that they could be the ultimate tool for corporate espionage. They open an array of new avenues for hackers. Not only can drones be hacked in flight, causing them to crash, the craft also can be used for stealing sensitive information from the public. Although there are cons present, the pros outweigh the cons, he said.
The Workshop also discussed Top 5 counter-drone technologies.
