Dr. Anjana Devi Professor Ruhr-University Addresses Faculty Members

27-Aug-2015

An interactive talk by Dr. Anjana Devi, Professor, Inorganic Materials Chemistry Research Group, Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, was held in the Campus. The talk was organised jointly by the Academic, Research, and Training Departments of the College along with the Rotary Club of Mangalore.
Dr. Anjana Devi addressed the faculty members on " Atomic scale Engineering of Nanostructured functional materials: Chemical approaches to tackle challenges in materials development."  She spoke about employing chemical approaches for developing thin films and the various concepts such as chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, rare earth oxides, and transparent oxide semiconductors for flexible light electronic gadgets.

She thanked the Chairman and the entire management for giving her an opportunity to put forward her ideas, and she encouraged those present to enroll into research studies in Germany.

Dr. Anjana Devi also addressed the Academic & Research co-ordinators from every section and other interested students on "Higher Education and Pursuing Research in Germany: Perspectives and Opportunities."
She elaborated on the education system in Germany and stressed that education is something which they don’t compromise on and added that students are more independent in Germany.

She gave in-depth information on Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD), German Academic Exchange Service - German national agency for international academic cooperation and exchange and independent association of universities that provides scholarships and grants along with information and counseling about studying and research in Germany. It has 70 regional offices and information centres worldwide. She explained about the three- tier degree structure which consists of Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. She mentioned that there are more than 250,000 international students in Germany with high academic standards. She also spoke about the types of higher education system in Germany such as research universities, universities of applied science and outstanding research institutions. The various procedures to be followed to study abroad, information on scholarship provided for funding to study abroad, internship, or senior thesis research were some of the other topics she spoke on.

During her talk she gave numerous tips for students to succeed in life and urged students to explore the opportunities to study abroad.

Dr. Anjana Devi obtained her doctoral degree in Philosophy from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, India. Her current research activities include Thin Film Deposition by Metal Inorganic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) and Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) of Metals, Semiconductors, and High-k oxide, Ferroelectric and Spintronic Materials and their Application. She has published a vast number of research papers since the year 1994. She was awarded the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, Germany and the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Foundation, Germany Fellowship and the Research Associate Fellowship from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Currently, she is a visiting Professor, IIT, Hyderabad. She was nominated as a member of the Global Young Faculty (GYF) and elected as ‘Speaker’ of the Climate Group of GYF, founded by the Mercator Foundation and University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr, Germany (www.facing-climate-change.org).
