Sahyadri Institute Innovation Council (IIC) organized a 90-minute webinar on “Awareness/Mentoring Session on IPR & IP Management for Innovation and Start-ups” on 18th April 2020, towards extending the support and awareness of various aspects of Intellectual Property Rights and also to provide a mentoring session for individual innovators and Start-ups.
Dr. Ratishchandra Gatti, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering was invited as a resource person. Dr. Anush Bekal, Vice-President & Convener, MHRDs Institute Innovation Council; Ms. Navya Rai D, Innovation Activity Co-ordinator, MHRDs Institute Innovation Council; Faculty members of the institute & Students were present during for the Online session. In this 90-minute webinar, the resource person shared his in-depth knowledge on Intellectual Property Rights. He spoke about what an IPR is, the classification of Intellectual Property Rights - Patents, Copyrights, Industrial Design rights, Trademarks and Trade secrets. He also shared the difference between patents, copyright and trademarks. Mainly speaking about the various procedures involved in obtaining an IPR, he also spoke on the rules and regulations, the timeline and costs involved in obtaining a patent. He mentioned that there is a dire need for innovators and start-ups to guard their innovative products or MVPs with IPR before they move towards marketing or demonstrate their innovations for investments.
He further emphasized on the benefits of having an IPR - Return on Investment, Competitive advantage, a source of Passive Income and much more.
This was followed by an audience interaction session where student and faculty innovators exchanged their thoughts and questions about IPR. The session ended on a positive note with resource person advising the innovators to obtain IPR as an investment towards the future. A total of 105 participants attended the webinar.
