Team ‘Titans’ Utilise the Social Innovation Program to address the Rising Problem of Road Accidents

Social Innovation Program for the First Years at Sahyadri encourages students to revisit problems faced by the Community until they get to the root cause, inculcating the skill of identifying the right stakeholders before diving into problem solving to come up with viable and implementable solutions for society.
Team ‘Titans’ with members Rajath P. Shetty, Mohizam, Shalvian John D’Souza, Apeksha K., Sree Hari and Yashna H. Kanchan of Section ‘D’ utilised the Social Innovation Program to address the rising problem of road accidents. India makes constitutes 12% of the World’s Total Deaths as a result of road accidents, which is devastating given the large number of younger population - close to 76% - losing their lives to it. The team sought to reduce these increasing numbers of cases, through their Social Innovation Project, focusing on an idea that could encompass all the major causes of accidents, like Underage Driving, Absence of License and Proper Documents, Speeding and Drunk Driving. This was done through interactions with the Traffic department during the course of the program.
The team proposes a Speed Analysing Mechanism (SAM)-24 to be installed in the vehicle with a compulsory card slot for License which ensures proper tracking for the traffic wardens and sets a speed limit for age groups of 16-18 and identifies vehicles moving at high speed. They have also looked into integrating AI to identify Drunk Drivers. The team has come up with a design and the idea is in its prototyping stage.
