Happy Onam
A harvest festival widely celebrated in the state of Kerala and by the Malayalee community around the world, Onam commemorates the annual homecoming of King Mahabali, believed to be the descendant of Kashyapa, a Brahmin sage, and an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu.
On the day of Onam, Asura King Mahabali is believed to visit every Malayali home and meet his people.
Activities such as decoration with flowers known as pookalam, cleaning of the house, preparation of the traditional sadya, and the traditional snake boat race known as Vallamkali, mark the course of these days. Dance and art forms such as Pulikali and Kaikottikali are also performed in most homes.
