A Tribute to Dr. Ananthamurthy

Jnanpith award winning litterateur U. R. Ananthamurthy has passed away in Bangalore. Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy (21 December 1932 - 22 August 2014) was a contemporary writer and critic in the Kannada language and is considered as one of the pioneers of the Navya movement. He is the sixth person among eight recipients of the Jnanpith Award for the Kannada language, the highest literary honour conferred in India. In 1998, he received the Padma Bhushan award from the Government of India. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala during the late 1980s. He was one of the finalists of Man Booker International Prize for the year 2013. May his soul rest in peace and may God give the family strength to bear this great loss.

Dr. D. L. Prabhakara, Director, Sahyadri Education Institutions, had the privilege of interacting with the famous personality. He cherishes those moments by saying “I want to cherish the memories with Dr. Ananthamurthy. I was a member of Academic Council of Mysore University (MU) during 1980-83 (almost 31 years back). Being a Professor of MU, he was also a Member of MU. During a discussion, I stood in the meeting and spoke for about 15 minutes on a subject that was paramount on the disparities between B.Sc. and B.A. subjects curriculum. After my placement of the argument, Dr. Ananthamurthy, who used to smoke in the house threw it away and congratulated me about my arguments. I was overwhelmed about his gesture!”
