Team `The Arions’ Qualify for the Finale of Baja SAE Competition

Team “THE ARIONS” from Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management participated in the national level "Virtual Baja" competition held at Gujarat Technological University, Ahmedabad and have been shortlisted from 320 participating teams from all over the country including IIT”s and NIT’s. The selection round for Baja SAE India 2015 wherein more than 1500 participants from the 320 participating colleges across the country presented designs of the buggy vehicle they plan to create for the finale in February 2015. The team members are Goutham Nayak, Amod Kamat, Ankush Vishwakarma and Fenil Mehta of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

“THE ARIONS” comprises of engineers who are bound not only with a common mind-set but also with common dreams. Every member in the team has one motto ‘to excel’. Arion is a divinely-bred, extremely swift immortal horse. The team name `The Arions’ portraits an idea to build a car in which their immortal dream could be visualized, and an inexorable potential can be felt. The only desire of the team is to build a Baja that clearly supports their instinct and their passion for the field.

Baja SAE® is an intercollegiate design competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The Baja SAE® competition originated at University of South Carolina in 1976, under the direction of Dr. John F. Stevens. Since then, the Baja SAE Series has grown to become a premier engineering design series for university teams. Teams of students from universities all over the world, participate in this event of designing and building small off-road cars. All cars that are designed for this event have engines of the same specifications. The goal in Baja SAE racing is to design, build and race off-road vehicles that can withstand the harshest elements of rough terrain. The vehicles used in Baja SAE racing are often similar in appearance to dune buggies.

There are multiple dynamic events, usually four per event, as well as a single four-hour endurance race. The dynamic events include hill climbs, maneuverability event and suspension & traction events. Static events, such as written reports, presentations and design evaluations are provided by participating teams. This is when the teams are judged on ergonomics, functionality, and productivity of their cars; ensuring that the final placement of the team does not rest solely on the vehicle's performance but rather on a combination of static and dynamic events.
