Team ‘Tech Drifters’ pursue an Alternative Design to eradicate the use of Coolants in Air Conditioners and Refrigerators
Change begins with you. With this ideology at the heart of the course, Social Innovation Program for First Years at Sahyadri, encourages students to understand Social Issues in depth and involves them with community leaders and experts to get various perspectives.
This exercise helps students improve Communication, builds their knowledge of the society and its issues and teaches them to empathise on a root level giving them an opportunity to drive change.
K. Sriram Shenoy, Sanjan Acharya K., Abhinav T.M., Mamatha Devadiga and Manya K.M. of Team ‘Tech Drifters’ of First Year, ‘A’ Section, pursued an alternative design to eradicate the use of Coolants in Air Conditioners and Refrigerators.
The team delved into the concept of identifying the Environmental impact of these chemicals leading to Ozone Depletion, Global Warming and the likes, stimulating the rate of Climate Change.
Team ‘Tech Drifters’ came up with various designs – close to 20 – and consistently refined their model, studying the drawbacks thoroughly and presenting their observations on their website to showcase progress to their stakeholders.
The idea is conceptualised on two major laws, one being the Second Law of Thermodynamics where the team applied their knowledge of Heat flow and also Joule- Kelvin Effect, under the guidance of mentors during the course of the program.
The idea is in the prototype stage and is undergoing further development. Through this project the team hopes to eradicate the dependence on chemicals like CFCs and HFCs as coolants that contribute to Global Warming.
