Feedback from a Student on Swachh Mangaluru Campaign

Dear Sahyadrians,

Let me share an incident which happened to me during the 40th Swachh Mangaluru Campaign.

Fifty Sahyadrians represented our college in the 40th Swachh Mangaluru Campaign. The road from St. Rita's school to Mangaldevi Temple was assigned to us. Fifty of us took 45 minutes to clean just a single road and that too only the sides.

In the evening I was riding back home and a passenger in a car ahead of me literally dropped two plastic cups in the middle of the road. I was very unhappy on his actions. I overtook the car and stopped it. I told the driver what happened and requested him to pick up the cups. He gave me the usual "sorry" without feeling the least apologetic. I told him about the campaign this morning and how difficult it is to pick up waste left by people like them, who lack the patience to reach home and drop the cups into their dustbins. He got down, went back to the spot, picked up the cups and brought them back and apologized, now with a genuine sense to it. I smiled at him and left, a smile filled with satisfaction, pride and enthusiasm.

That's when I realized the importance of Swachh Bharath Campaign. It is a concept-- An idea. It grows inside you to give you that anger when you see someone littering the road anywhere around you. I recommend each and every one of you to take a day off and join the local campaign in your city. That is when you will know the pain of dropping a single packet of pan parag, a single wrapper of gum,a single plastic bottle or a cup. No one knows fire until you get burned.
