Visit to Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) for inputs on Social Innovation Project

Visit-to-Rubber-Research-Institute-of-India-(RRII)-for-inputs-on-Social-Innovation-Project Students of first year engineering Bharish S Alva (4sf16cs035), Shreyas Dhanush (4sf16me141) and Akarsh Shetty (4sf16ec004) along with Gautham Nayak (Technical Trainer - DTlabz) visited The Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII), located in Puthuppally, Kottayam. The students, as a part of their social innovation project had identified that tapping rubber from rubber trees is a tedious task and requires accurate skill of tapping. Many Rubber Tree Estate owners are facing problems due to non-availability of skilful labour for the job. In order to overcome this problem, a mechanised device is being planned as an innovation. Mr. Radhakrishna Hebbar, who owns rubber trees plantation at Belthangadi, Neriya guided the team to reach RRII.

The team had a productive discussion with Mr. K U Thomas (Retired Joint Director LHT, RRII), who gave insights on the research work that has been carried out over the years in order to enhance the productivity in Rubber Plantations. Students also interacted with Dr. R Rajagopal (Senior Scientist, Latex harvest technology) and Dr. Karunaichamy (Scientist, Latex harvest technology) who gave a brief idea about various tools used for tapping and also gave a practical demonstration on how tapping is done. Dr. James Jacob (Director, Research) of Rubber Research Institute India conveyed his wishes for the success of the project.
