Eid Mubarak

Eid E Milad or Barah Wafat is an important Muslim festival which marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad who was the founder of Islam. According to the Islamic calendar it falls on the 12th day of the month of the third month Rabi-ul-Awwal. His death anniversary also falls on the same day. The term barah refers to twelve which means twelve days of sickness of Prophet Muhammad.

Prophet Mohammed was born in Mecca in Saudi Arabia in 570 A.D. He married a wealthy widow who was fifteen years his senior and had six children out of which two sons died in childhood. During this time he used to meditate in a cave in Mount Hira north of Mecca. In 610 CE it is said that he gained revelations from Allah through the angel Gabriel that he was a messenger of God. Soon he had a small group of men following him giving birth to the Islamic era and Islam became one of the popular religions in the world. In 632 he held a pilgrimage to Mecca where it is believed that he gave his final sermon and then fell ill and died soon after. His is housed within the Mosque of the Prophet in Medina. All his teachings are included in the ‘Hadith’.

This festival is a day for both mourning and rejoicing. In some places a symbolic representation of prophet Mohammad placed in a glass casket is taken out in a procession and this is called the Urs. Here a ritual called sandal rite is practiced where sandal paste or scented powder is smeared over the symbolic footprints of the Prophet engraved in stone. Also a representation of the horse which is believed to have gone to heaven with him is also placed near the footprints and is called the ‘buraq’.

The glass casket is decorated beautifully and people take out a procession during which Marsiyas and elegies are sung. People gather to hear sermons about the life and teachings of Prophet Mohammad on his day. Poetry or Naats are recited in the mosques. People offer special prayers and give alms. Prayers are held for all twelve days. Street processions are held and children are told about the Prophet’s life and good deeds. On this day people honour Prophet Mohammad and commemorate his teachings and beliefs.
