A teacher, or guru, plays an important role in shaping our lives and, therefore, are considered akin to a God. They do not just impart knowledge to their students, but also guide and steer them towards the right direction in life. The Sanskrit word ‘guru’ translates to ‘dispeller of darkness’. To express reverence and pay gratitude to our teachers, Guru Purnima is celebrated every year by all communities around the world.
The day is marked by worshipping and expressing gratitude to the teachers or gurus. Many people fast on this day and visit temples to offer their respect and seek blessings.

Dr. Mustafa Basthikodi, Professor, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering, participated as member of VTU Local Inquiry Committee (LIC) for two days during 19th to 20th July 2021. The four-member team including Chairman and EC Member Dr. K M Jagadeesh, PESCE; Member Dr. Suresh S, BIET Davangere and Member Convenor Dr. Ravichandra Nayakar, UBDTCE, Davangere inspected four reputed colleges of Bangalore region for granting Continuation / Extension of affiliation/ Recognition of Research Centre for the academic year 2021-22.

The resource person for the event was Dr. Karthik S A, Assistant Professor, Dept. of ISE, Dayanand Sagar Academy Technology and Management, Bengaluru. Dr. Karthik spoke about the fundamental concepts of Data Mining. He explained about the various data mining techniques and its applications. A total of 70 students participated in the webinar.

What is Gig Economy?
Sustaining productivity is a constant struggle. Instead of a traditional, in-office, full-time job with a single company, gig workers work as short-term, temporary, or independent contractors for one or a variety of employers (though they are not employers in the traditional sense). This is considered a Gig job.
The gig economy uses digital platforms to connect freelancers with customers to provide short-term services or asset-sharing. Examples include ride-hailing apps, food delivery apps, and holiday rental apps. It’s a growing segment, bringing economic benefits of productivity and employment. But it also raises questions about levels of consumer and worker protection. The challenge is to balance innovation with a fair deal for workers.
In a gig economy, temporary, flexible jobs are commonplace, and companies tend to hire independent contractors and freelancers instead of full-time employees. A gig economy undermines the traditional economy of full-time workers who often focus on their career development.
Distress and distractions can erode it, and both impediments abound in people’s working lives. The gig economy gets its name from each piece of work being akin to an individual 'gig' – although, such work can fall under multiple names. It has previously been called the "sharing economy", mostly in reference to platforms such as Airbnb and the "collaborative economy". For this research the 'gig economy' has been defined as “involving an exchange of labour for money between individuals or companies via digital platforms that actively facilitate matching between providers and customers, on a short-term and payment by task basis.”
The pay standard is designed so that drivers receive gross earnings of $27.86 per hour, equivalent to a net income of $17.22 per hour after expenses, which would cover the $15 per hour received by a regular employee after deducting payroll taxes and the average compensation value of paid time off.
