International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

Sahyadri is graced by the visit of top executives of MRPL The United Nations’ (UN) International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking falls on 26th of June every year to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represents to society.

The theme for 2018 is: "Listen First - Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe." It is an initiative to increase support for prevention of drug use that is based on science. It is thus an effective investment for the well-being of children and youth, their families and their communities.

The executives visited the start-up companies functioning in the campus. They appreciated the various innovative programs implemented by our college and the support it gives for the development and transformation of innovative ideas into actual projects. They were truly impressed by the State-of-the-art technology and infrastructure that is used at Sahyadri campus. They said that the initiatives at Sahyadri are unique and will help students to be industry-ready once they come out of the portals of Sahyadri.

India too is caught in this vicious circle of drug abuse, and the numbers of drug addicts are increasing day by day. According to a UN report, one million heroin addicts are registered in India, and unofficially there are as many as five million. What started off as casual use among a minuscule population of high-income group youth in the metro has permeated to all sections of society!

Inhalation of heroin alone has given way to intravenous drug use, that too in combination with other sedatives and painkillers. This has increased the intensity of the effect, hastened the process of addiction and complicated the process of recovery. Cannabis, Heroin, and Indian-produced pharmaceutical drugs are the most frequently abused drugs in India.
