Faculty of Mechanical Engineering receives RGS-F fund for Ocean Wave-energy research

Dr. Rathishchandra.R.Gatti, Professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been selected by Vision group of Science & Technology, Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka to receive the 5 lakhs worth RGS-F grant (Research Grant for Scientist-Faculty) for the project titled "Design and Development of a Novel Point Absorber Type Wave Energy Generator for MicrGrids and Desalination for agricultural purposes".

The objective of the proposed project is to design, fabricate and test a novel point absorber type wave energy generator for micro-grids and desalination. The wave energy potential along the coastal lines of peninsular region of India is approximately 171 GW. There are two visions to develop this novel wave energy converter in this project: (i) To bring grid stability by having Wave energy based micro-grid setups (50-100 MW private and public power plants) at the coastal regions so that the landlocked regions of India can rely on other power resources (ii) another objective is to build high pressure water and feed it to Sea Water Reverse Osmosis plants which in turn can cater to coastal drinking water and agricultural water supplies. This will reduce the agriculture dependence on fresh water or ground water resources.
