Felicitation of Asmath Sharmeen, the “Golden Girl of VTU” by the Dept. of Civil Engineering

Asmath Sharmeen T S, the Golden Girl of VTU who secured 13 Gold Medals and 1st Rank in Civil Engineering in the recently released VTU Rank List for the Academic year 2019-20, was felicitated by the Dept. of Civil Engineering on 31st March’2021. Asmath Sharmeen visited Sahyadri along with her parents and interacted with Prof. Hemantha Prabhu B, Head of Dept. of Civil Engineering; Dr. Nalini E Rebello, Dean-Academics and Faculty Members of the Department. They felicitated her for the extraordinary accomplishment in Academics. Asmath Sharmeen expressed her gratitude towards the faculty members, Head of the Dept. and the Management of Sahyadri who constantly supported her throughout her student life for achieving such a mile stone.
Dr. Rajesha S, Principal; Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice Principal; Mr. Ramesh Hegde, Finance Officer and Ms. Shreelatha U A, AAO congratulated the Golden Girl for her achievement. Asmath Sharmeen will be receiving her degree from his Excellency Shri. Vajubhai Vala, the Chancellor of the University during the 20th Annual Convocation to be held on 3rd April’2021 at VTU, Belagavi.

Inter-Class Athletic Competition for First Year Engineering is scheduled to be held in Sahyadri Ground during 30th March to 1st April’2021. The event is organized by Dept. of Physical Education. A total of 250 students are participating in the Competition.

Concluding Day of AICTE-ISTE National Refresher Programme organized by Dept. of Mechanical Engineering

Day Six - 31st March'2021:
30_03_2021_S1 The first session of the Day Six (31st March, 2021) was engaged by Dr. Rameela shekhar. She has done her early education in Mangalore and then went on to pursue her studies at NIMHANS, Bangalore. She has served as a Professor, HOD and Dean P G Dept of Roshni Nilaya for 34 years. Currently, She is the Director and practicing Mental Health Professional at Manashanthi, Mangalore. She has conducted more than 1000 programs for students, parents, and teachers, and members of various Government and Corporate sectors on family life, family relationships, child mental health, healthy personality, stress management, mental health first aid, prevention of Sexual harassment in different parts of Karnataka and South India. She facilitated a session on Mindfulness session. During her presentation, she highlighted on importance of mental health, Logic of mind, some things we already know and we don’t know that we know, Mindfulness is finding your own way, it’s a gate way into your life and it is very simple but its not easy.
30_03_2021_S2 Last session was engaged by Dr. Rathishchandra R Gatti. He is currently a Researcher in the field of Self-powered systems, Energy harvesting and Wave energy and also working as a Professor at Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management. The topic of the resource person was Lab-Collaborative learning tools. During his presentation, he highlighted on Collaborative learning, the importance of it and different collaborative learning tools that helps students to involve, explore and learn.

With this, The All India Level AICTE-ISTE Refresher Program- Phase-1 came to an end with a Valedictory Programme. Dr. Rajesha S., Principal welcomed the Chief guest Dr. D S Suresh, Chairman, ISTE-Karnataka and congratulated for the successful completion of the Phase-1, and shared glimpse of the feedback from the participants. Feedback said that the sessions were very informative, new methodology to adopt and evaluate the students. They appreciated the team work and said that the programme was well organized & had valuable content. Dr. Ravichandra K R, Dean-Industry Connect & HoD of Mechanical Engineering Department, gave a report of all the sessions held in the phase -1.
Dr. D S Suresh, Chairman, ISTE-Karnataka in his address, stressed that Collaborative learning and Cooperative learning is required for the implementation of NEP and Congratulated the team for proposing such a wonderful topic with respect to the New Education Policy. He said - This will definitely change the entire atmosphere of learning and highlighted one of the innovative topic "Gamifications" and suggested to work on more open sources tools that can be used effectively for faculty and students too. To make students creative, it's very important to have this collaborative and cooperative learning, and suggest to have a policy on this topic that can help to have an MoU different university.
Dr. S. Manjappa, Director-Research and Advisory Committee member of the event, conveyed his wholehearted thanks to all for having proposed such a wonderful topic and sanctioning the grants too. Appreciated the team effort for conducting such a good and well-organized program. and also conveyed his thanks to all the resources persons for accepting the invitation and delivering such a valuable content.

Dept. of Mechanical Engineering is organizing a Three-Day “Design Now Workshop”

Dept. of Mechanical Engineering along with ICT Academy in association with Autodesk, Indian Society of Mechanical Engineers (ISME), Sahyadri Institute Innovation Council (IIC) and FLAMES-Mechanical Engineering Students Association has come up with an exclusive “Design now Challenge” followed by a National Level Challenge “India Design Week -2020” for the students of Mechanical Engineering of Sahyadri among the 4 states of India (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka & Telangana).
The objective is to ignite the creativity from the young minds in the area of Design Thinking, Product Design & Advance Simulation using Autodesk Fusion 360 software.
As a first step, the department will conduct 3 days - 3 hours virtual students’ workshop exclusively for the students of Sahyadri that has commenced on 30th March’2021 and will be closed on 1st Apr’2021. This will be followed by “Design Now Challenge”. Top 3 teams from the Design now challenge, will be eligible to participate in the “India Design week -2021”.
This year, Autodesk is very selective regarding the college and based on recommendation and commitment that the college will fulfill the criteria of Autodesk, it has accepted and approved Sahyadri to conduct this event among the 50 colleges across the country.
Mr. Saurabh Sing, Senior Technical Trainer interacted and had hands-on session on AUTODESK FUSION 360 Software. The session involved Overview, Sketching, Direct Modelling, Surface Modelling, Parametric Modelling, Mesh Modelling, Freeform Modelling and Rendering. Prof. Kiran Prakash is coordinating the event and a total of 57 students have registered and participated in the first phase of the workshop. The second phase will be commencing in the third week of April for the other group of students.

Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering organized Awareness Programmes on Data Science & AI-ML

AI_ML2 Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering has organized Awareness Programmes on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for the newly joined Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning students respectively on 30th March’2021. Head of the Dept. - Dr. Pushpalatha K addressed both the branch students and urged them to be active and passionate in all activities that the department organizes.

Data Science Awareness Programme for First year Data Science Students:
During the first half, the speaker Dr. Mustafa Basthikodi, Professor, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering, interacted with the students by presenting them about Data Science with practical applications. In the presentation, he covered the Need of Data Science, What is Data Science, Business Intelligence Vs. Data Science, the prerequisites for learning Data Science, What does a Data Science Engineer do, Data Science life Cycle with real time examples, and the demand and job opportunities for Data Science Engineers and the average annual package that the top MNCs offer.
During the second half students were entertained by making them involved in learning-based activities from Data Science perspective. The activities included were – Ice Breaker, Jumbled words, pick the word, draw the image and guess it, dumb charades and creation of Data Science icons.
The session was concluded by awarding best performing students in the activities by Dr. Mustafa Basthikodi. The faculty members demonstrated their complete involvement to plan and execute the activities with high energy and enthusiasm. The feedback given by students showed their active participation for gaining knowledge on Data Science.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Awareness Programme for First Year AI-ML Students:
AI_ML1 During the first half, the speaker Prof. Priya Kamath gave an introduction to AI/ML. While a lot of similarities exist between the course content for AI/ML and CSE, the main differences between the two were laid out. The importance of the subjects in the specialization course was also explained. She also gave insights into the job opportunities in the field. Further, Prof. Duddela Sai Prashanth started with an interactive session. The advantages of pursuing the course in AI/ML at Sahyadri were emphasized. The opportunities for project works, and converting ideas to products, were also discussed.
During the second half, Team building activities were conducted to allow the students to get to know each other. The students actively participated in events conducted by the Faculty members.

Placement and Training - Internship at Wiley-mthree

Wiley_mthree Wiley-mthree strongly believes in enhancing diversity & inclusion, and serves students from all groups. The Wiley-mthree internship spans 10-12 weeks involving project work and training in a range of in-demand skills, with different pathways to groom interns for specific tech roles with top global banks. The internship is for the 2021 outgoing batch students with 60 % aggregate throughout.
Interns will receive a stipend of INR 20,000 if the program is fully online AND an additional INR 30,000 if called for in-person training at Bangalore.

Dept. of ECE conducts PAC Meeting

The Program Assessment Committee (PAC) Meeting of the Dept. of Electronics & Communication Engineering was conducted on 29th March’2021. Dr. Joyline D’sa, Head of Dept. of Electronics & Communication Engineering, presented the progress and action plans required to be taken with respect to the Electronics & Communication Engineering Program.
Following points were presented and discussed in PAC meeting
• Students and Faculty performance, Placement Statistics.
• Open Elective and Professional Electives offering for AY 2020-21 even semesters
• Mandatory AICTE 100 points activities and action plan
• Funds applied to Various Funding Agencies
• Promoting students to write the competitive examination and action plan
• Action Plan for next three academic years
• Strategies and Action Plan for Teaching & Learning Process, Research and Development & Consultancy and Digital Information under ICT module
• Challenges during Pandemic situation
The discussion also included many aspects like improvement in publication and research funding projects, student projects converting to start-ups and so on. Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal, emphasized on conducting many departmental activities which will enhance student’s overall development. Dr. Nalini Rebello, Dean-Academics, gave her feedback and valuable suggestions to develop better TLP, R&D and improvement in the placement statistics. The department faculty members also suggested and discussed the plan of actions for the upcoming semester.

Conclusion of NSS Special Camp 2020-21

The third day of the NSS Annual Special Camp began with the hoisting of NSS flag by Dr. Ranjith, Visiting Dental Surgeon at Sevanjali Trust. He shared his experiences as an NSS volunteer during his college days. Ms. Shreelatha UA, NSS Programme Officer spoke about the skills required to be a good leader. Ice-breaking and team building activities were conducted for the students by Ms. Shreelatha UA, NSS Programme Officer; Mr. Navin Pillar, Cultural Department Co-ordinator and Mr. Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor. Following that, an educational session on Leadership was conducted by Prof. Ramesh KG, Dean-Strategic Planning and Faculty of Dept. of Business Administration. Post lunch, the students were given topics related to the various social issues. They had to enact a short play. The students performed excellently and gave beautiful messages to the audience.
Dr. Ravichandra, Head of Dept. of Mechanical Engineering visited the students, appreciated the students' interest in social service and motivated them to continue to involve in social services. The best volunteers were identified and were appreciated.
