Ugadi

Ugadi is the New Year's Day for the people of the Deccan region of India. The festival marks the beginning of a new year for the people who follow the lunar calendar. It is believed that the creator of the Hindu pantheon Lord Brahma started creation on this day. Ugadi is celebrated with different names in different parts of the country like Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Thappan in Rajasthan, Cheti Chand in Sind etc.

The day begins with a ritual bath after which a mixture of neem leaves and jiggery is eaten symbolizing that fact that life is a balance of both the good and the bad. Panchangasravanam or listening to a reading of the yearly Hindu calendar is an important aspect of Ugadi. Traditionally, this was done at the temples or at the Town square but now it is usually done in the homes. In Maharashtra, a Gudi is displayed prominently in most houses. The Gudi consists of a bright green or yellow cloth adorned with brocade (zari) tied to the tip of a long bamboo over which gaathi (sugar crystals), neem leaves, a twig of mango leaves and a garland of red flowers are tied. A silver or copper pot is placed in the inverted position over it. The Gudi is believed to ward off evil, invite prosperity and good luck into the house.

The festival is celebrated with joy and a sense of togetherness. It is a time for the members of the family to spend time with each other and hope for a prosperous, peaceful and joyous year.

Happy Ugadi!
