Chairman Nominated as Candidate in Shimoga Constituency

Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation, was nominated for the present Lok Sabha General Elections from the Indian National Congress, Shimoga Constituency.

A born leader, Dr. Manjunath Bhandary’s skills were honed in the early student days of school and college and opened up vast avenues for him to be recognized as a leader and thereby counted among the youth as a youth icon on the global platform. He received the prestigious fellowship from Eisenhower Foundation, Philadelphia, USA in the year 2004.

He was instrumental in the government's ambitious rural welfare scheme called CSCs (Common Service Centers). He proposed a project, “Rajiv Vikas Kendra” to the Govt. of India through the Hon'ble Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, and the same was approved by the Prime Minister, Sri. Manmohan Singh with the Union Cabinet sanctioning rupees 5637 crores to provide employment to 10 million rural youth. In 1978, Dr. Manjunath Bhandary involved himself actively in the congress party at Karkala, while he was studying Pre-University, when the former Prime Minister Late Smt. Indira Gandhi contested the Lok Sabha bye-election from Chikmagalur. Chairman Files Nomination Papers and becomes the first to do so from the Shimoga Constituency

Congress MP Candidate Mr. Manjunath Bhandary filed his nomination papers on Wednesday, the 19th of March 2014 and was the first candidate to file his nomination papers from the Shimoga Lok Sabha Constituency. Mr. Bhandary accompanied with his daughter Deeksha, MLA K. B. Prasanna Kumar, District Congress Committee President R. Prasanna Kumar, and Legal Advisor Praveen Kumar, submitted his nomination papers to the Returning Officer Mr. Vipul Bansal.

More than 40,000 people gathered with full enthusiasm and for nearly four hours entire Shimoga was at a standstill. The Chairman was really happy that Shimoga district workers and voters created history on this day. He was extremely overwhelmed to see the support extended and this boosted his confidence to the next level.

Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp conducted in the Campus

A three-day VTU sponsored Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp was inaugurated by Dr. Chidanand Gavimath, Special Officer, ED Cell & Biofuel Research Centre, VTU. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, presided over the inaugural function. Dr. A. P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration, welcomed the gathering and Prof. Dayananda Shetty, Director- STEP, delivered the vote of thanks. Following the inaugural programme, Mr. Addoor Krishna Rao, Retired Director- RUDSETI addressed the participants on "Competencies required to become an Entrepreneur" and Dr. A. P. Achar, engaged a session on "Stages in Entrepreneurship Development." Mr. Vilas Nayak, CEO, Hanuman Transport, addressed the topic "Charm and Challenges of being an Entrepreneur", through his experience sharing.

The second day of the three-day VTU sponsored Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp began with a session on "Business Opportunity Identification", by Dr. Chidananda Gavimath, Special Officer, VTU. He addressed the students about the new business opportunities available if perceived beyond the usual dimension. He discussed about the bio-diesel project undertaken by him and the various benefits derived from the project. Mr. Addoor Krishna Rao, Retired Director, RUDSETI, briefed about the requirements to start a new business. He called on the student community to look beyond the obvious to identify new business opportunities.

Post lunch, the participants visited Gunashree Cashew Industry as a part of industry exposure. The students were accompanied by faculty members, Mr. Ragavendra Prabhu, Mr. Ramesh and Ms. Shilpa Shetty of the Department of Business Administration.

The third and final day of the three-day VTU Sponsored Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp began with a session on "Steps in Creating New Enterprise" by Dr. A.P.Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration. Prof. Dayananda Shetty, Director- STEP, spoke on "Institutional Support for New Enterprise Creation". Dr. Chidananda Gavimath, Special Officer, VTU, Belgaum and Dr. Umesh. M. Bhushi, Principal, were present on the occasion.

Faculty Development Programme held for teachers of under-graduate colleges

Inaugurating the one-day Faculty Development Programme on `Student Enterprise; an Entrepreneurial Pedagogy for Excellence in Higher Education’ in the Campus, for teachers of under-graduate colleges, Dr. Venugopal, Director, School of Management, Manipal, and the Chief Guest of the programme, stressed on the need for inclusive growth in India. He said that entrepreneurship today has more challenges to face, yet it does have a social orientation. `Student enterprise is not just being self-employed but being employed in doing something which one enjoys doing’, he said.

Dr. Prasad, Professor, NITIE, Mumbai, the keynote speaker said that, `enterprise is missing in academics. It's a medicine that needs to be administered to our students. Embedding entrepreneurship in academics is an art.’ Dr. Prasad engaged various sessions on the need and ways to create student enterprise and the support available to enable such an enterprise.

The Faculty Development Programme was organised by the Department of Business Administration. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, gave his presidential remarks and wished the programme a grand success. The director of the department, Dr. A. P. Achar also engaged a session on `Entrepreneurial Competency.’ Mr. Mahesh Prabhu, Director, Business World, shared his experience with the audience. About forty faculty members of various under-graduate colleges in and around Mangalore participated.



           

Cricket unites people of all religions – Mr. Moideen Bava

Mr. Moideen Bava, Member of the Legislative Assembly, Surathkal, Mangalore, inaugurated the four-day inter-collegiate cricket tournament for UG students organized by the Sahyadri Premier League (SPL) at the Sahyadri Campus. Around thirty-two teams from different parts of Karnataka participated in this tournament.

Mr. Bava illustrated with examples how cricket can unite people of all religions and develop peace and harmony among people in a society. He appealed to young men and women to unite together to work towards the betterment of the society. India, being the youngest nation in the world, can be a superpower within the next five years, if youngsters of our country unite together by forgetting difference of caste, religion and language. Mr. Moideen Bava also emphasized the need for cricket lovers of Mangalore to practice overarm bowling rather than underarm bowling which is very popular in the district. He also expressed his happiness that students have formed the SPL as a student enterprise to tap the interest of the youth in cricket and to promote sports and games among men and women.

Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, presided over the inaugural function and Dr. Ananthapadhmanabha Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration, provided an overview of the Sahyadri Premier League. Mr. Manish Gatti, Chairman, SPL, welcomed the gathering and Mr. Boris Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.


Annual Alumni Meet 2014

The Annual Alumni Meet commenced with sharing of experience and career guidance by Joe Newton Crasta, Darshan, Shiva Prasad, Sanketh Poojari, Isham and Deepraj Alva. Abhijeet Karkera, Managing Partner, Vibrant Minds, motivated students to pursue their dreams.

Later, there was an interaction with the management team, HoDs and faculty members. The principal addressed the gathering to infuse life into the current students. Dean Academics stressed the importance of an alumni association. An Alumni Body Meeting was held and board members were appointed. The president of the current Alumni Association is ShivPrasad Shetty, vice president, Joe Newton Crasta, secretary, Abhijith Karkera, treasurer, Mamatha Shetty, joint secretary, Prashanth and Deepraj Alva, members, Rakshith, Vasanth Radhika, Isham and Raksha. The roles and responsibilities were made clear and various major discussions were held.

Fun filled activities were conducted and prizes were distributed around the campfire near the cafeteria. Students of the college performed for the alumni. A cake was cut on the occasion and a sumptuous dinner served to the alumni. There was dancing around the campfire. Career Forum held at RiiiT, Mysore

`Industry-Institution Interface;’ a Placement Officers meet on career forum was hosted by RiiiT, Mysore in association with VTU, Belgaum. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Ravi Kumar, Special Officer, VTU, Mysore. Ms. Raksha K.M., Department of Placement and Training, represented the college at the meeting.

Eminent personalities from Wipro, Infosys, Unilog, Birlasoft, Dell, Span Infotech and SPI were the panelists. Topics like Diversity in IT requirements, Desire versus Deserve, Solution Ahead and 2014 Hiring- a Change in Trends were discussed. Around fifty placement officers from various colleges of Karnataka participated in this event.
