Mr. Bharat Lal Meena IAS Additional Chief Secretary Higher Education Visits Sahyadri

Mr. Bharat Lal Meena IAS, Additional Chief Secretary of Government Education Department, Higher Education, Govt. of Karnataka, visited Sahyadri. He had an interaction with the Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Principal, Dr. U.M. Bhushi, Officials of DTLabz, Mr. Gautham and Mr. Nishanth, regarding the education processes at Sahyadri. Having seen the institute from day one he complimented the phenomenal professional growth in eight years which is a benchmark for other growing institutes.

He specially complimented the unique initiatives of the Hands-on Experience Laboratory, concept and operational structure of Research, and the contribution of DTLabz in supporting the actual vision of the institute. Mr. Bharat Lal Meena specifically complimented the Startup established by student groups, and emphasized the need to disseminate to the rural masses. He emphasized that CSR to society should be a prime motive of Education in enabling effective services through technology enablement as a technical institute.

He stressed on the responsibility of a student in the institution and how the education in an institution can be improved with complete involvement using all the amenities provided to be a practicing engineer. In addition, he appreciated Sahyadri DREAMERS for their approach in nourishing more and more technocrats and also promised to connect Sahyadri DREAMERS to various industries to enhance the productivity in R&D. He emphasized the need of collaboration with all the institutes in and around and to develop an ecosystem of mutual growth and expand the horizon of working for an inclusive growth. He extended all his support for Sahyadri’s growth.

Mr. Sharath Saxena Visits Sahyadri

Mr. Sharath Saxena IPS, a former Director General of Police and currently the Chairman, Mangalore One School, Mangalore, visited Sahyadri. Mr. Saxena is an MBA graduate of the London Business School. He went around the institute and appreciated the vision of real education. He was in awe of the Hands-on Experience lab and said that it should be the basis for teaching, in times to follow. He expressed that students should capitalize on the avenues created by the institute and said, “The concept of education is learning by living life.” He complimented the management, staff and students for professionally contributing to society.

Dr. Mahesh C. Nalwad Visits Sahyadri

Dr. Mahesh C. Nalwad, Chairman, Fortis Suchirayu Hospital, Hubballi, visited Sahyadri and interacted with the Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary. Dr. Nalwad went around the institute and appreciated the management efforts in providing the ambience best suited for learning. He also expressed satisfaction and happiness with regard to the progress made by the institute in a very short span of time.

Tech Vision – 2016 Held in the Campus

Tech-Vision-2016; an intra-college exhibition-cum-competition of student projects under the Student Project Support Scheme (SPSS) of the college, was inaugurated by Dr. Shashi Kiran Shetty, Chairman & Managing Director, Allcargo Logistics Ltd. by switching on a PCB Milling Machine designed by students where the drill bit was swapped by a marker to write the word `Thanks’ on a sheet of paper just like a drill bit would cut a profile on wood or a piece of metal. Among many awards and citations that Dr. Shashi Kiran Shetty has received, in 2015 the Mangalore University conferred Honoris Causa (honorary doctorate) on him and he has also been honoured with the Rotary Annual 'Vandana Award' for the year 2016.

Dr. Shashi Kiran Shetty went around looking at various projects exhibited by the students. 200 projects of the II year, III year B.E., M.Tech. and 150 final year student projects were put on display. The chief guest was fascinated with every prototype he saw and was seen asking students many questions. The winners of the exhibition-cum-project competition were felicitated during the College Day programme.

Addressing the gathering, the chief guest said that he was truly privileged to be in the campus and was happy to see the wonderful ideas and innovations that students have come up with. He said he is truly impressed and overwhelmed with the many projects that he witnessed firsthand and that students were receiving accolades and awards when still in college. He advised that all these ideas need to be captured, preserved and marketed which he said will surely be done with a genius like Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, the Chairman, who will figure a way out. He told the gathered students that they were fortunate to be in the college.

He asked students to think differently, dare what they believe in and grab every opportunity that they can. He cautioned that success does not come easily but it is only with perseverance, hard work and ongoing effort that they can make success last. A Harvard study shows that only 3% of organizations survive beyond the third generation. He said that every aim of any organization is profit, but with more businesses, more employment opportunities can be created. He promised to involve Sahyadri students in research and ideas that he will be coming across during his new startup venture in the United States.

He complimented the management and the teaching staff for the vision that they pass on to the students. He said he was privileged to have a friend in Mr. Manjunath Bhandary the Chairman. He asked students to have an alumni setup where they can give back to their alma mater and he wished each and everyone all success in the future.

The eight student startup ventures were honoured by the chief guest with a plaque. He congratulated these entrepreneurs on their daring and encouraged them to keep it going so that their success will last.

College Day Celebrated

The College wore a festive air as Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management celebrated its ninth College Day in the Campus. Mr. N. G. Raju, Resource Management Group, Tech Mahindra Ltd. was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, he said that he was honored and happy to be a part of the College Day celebrations. He complimented everyone on this College Day and said that the initiatives taken up by the college is beyond the scope of the curriculum which will definitely be beneficial in the long run as it will help in student development. He told all the students that as budding engineers that they have a lot of responsibility to see to social upliftment and that Sahyadri acts like a support mechanism. He asked the students to have a lot of vision and told them to dream and plan and to make a mark for themselves and become successful in life. He said that learning comes by being a part of organizing any event and engineers have always contributed to reducing the burden of society. He said that it is only when one reaches the top of the mountain that one can look at the world with a different perspective. He wished everyone present the best of luck in the future.

Prof. Balakrishna S. S., Vice Principal, read out the annual report for the academic year 2015-16 and highlighted the many achievements and accolades received by the College and laid out the future plans for the College.

Mr. Jagannath Chowta, Trustee, Bhandary Foundation, addressed the gathering. In his thought-provoking speech he said that at Sahyadri the focus is on the overall development of a student and called on the parents to be present in the major events of the college so that they can see the changes and the growth in their children. Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal gave his presidential remarks and congratulated all the winners and said that the main aim of Sahyadri is to see that all the students are launched into becoming great human beings.

Academic toppers of each semester and Best Outgoing Students of each branch were felicitated by Prof. B. S. Umashanker, Dean Academic and Prof. Balakrishna S. S., Vice Principal honoured the Student Council President, Mr. Karthik Ramakrishna and all the Student Council heads.

Varsha sung the invocation, Karthik Ramakrishna, President, Student Council, welcomed the gathering, Aman Agarwal introduced the chief guest, Chaitra Shetty, gave the vote of thanks and Nishal Nivya Rodrigues, first year E & C was the master of ceremonies. The Management, invited dignitaries, the parents, the HoDs, the faculty members, non-teaching staff and students were present on the occasion. Students showcased their talent in a scintillating cultural programme.

4th Annual Alumni Meet Celebrated

The 4th annual meet of Sahyadri alumni association was celebrated with lot of pomp and joy. The meet started with the general body meeting where new office bearers for the year 2016-17 were elected. Mr Joel D’Mello was chosen as the president and Mr Vidya Shankar, Mr Siddarth Adynthaya, Ms Mamatha Shetty , Mr Mohanjith Marla, Mr Bharath Poojary were elected as vice-president, secretary, treasurer and joint secretaries, respectively. On the occasion Bangalore Chapter of Sahyadri was inaugurated. This was followed by a fun filled gala evening consisting of many exciting games and cultural extravaganza hosted by final year students. The alumni cherished the chance to come back to their alma mater and relive their memories. They also appreciated the growth of the institution and also promised to join hands to take Sahyadri to the zenith.

Financial Assistance to Sahyadri Team

Sahyadri Group of Institutions, Employees and Students multipurpose cooperative Society, located at the campus has extended the financial assistance of rupees ten thousand each, to Team Hawk, Sahyadri Motor Sports Team and the Team Formula in order to encourage the students to excel in academic diversified activities. Mr. Jagannatha Chowta, President of the Society, handed over the cheques and wished the Teams every success in the future. Directors of the Society Mr Ramesh Bhandary, Mr Vishu Kumar, Mr Lokesh and Secretary Mr. Manjaya Shetty were present on this occasion.

World Health Day Observed in the Campus

“There is no alternative for Blood”. Keeping this quote, the Department of Computer Applications and the Department of Business Administration observed World Health Day in the Campus by organising a Blood Donation Camp in association with KMC Mangalore and Website hosting events. Dr. M. Annayya Kulal, Chief Medical Officer & Professor, Srinivas Group of Educational Institutes, Mangalore, inaugurated the Blood Donation Camp and emphasized the significance of donating blood. Dr. Annayya Kulal also inaugurated a website developed by MCA students for promoting blood donation. Chief Guest, Dr Deepa Adiga, Blood Bank Officer, KMC Mangalore presented the statistics of blood donation. Around 225 units of blood were collected from students and faculty members.

Conference on Blue Ocean Strategy & Skill Development by RiiiT

Raman International Institute of Information Technology (RiiiT) based in Mysore conducted a daylong event - ‘Conference on Blue Ocean Strategy & Skill Development’ in association with the Department of Higher Education, Government of Karnataka, VTU Belgaum, NSDC, New Delhi and ApnaDesh at our campus.

Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary was the chief guest and he inaugurated the program. The guest speaker Mrs. Vathsala S Bhat, Dean, RiiiT stressed on the need of focusing on youngsters towards building a skilled India. Mr. Arpith Shetty, Senior Executive - Academic Relations, RiiiT thanked the College Management and the Placement Department for supporting them in hosting the regional conference at the college campus. Mr. R. Sathyanarayan, Head - Academic Relations, RiiiT, Prof. Balakrishna, Vice Principal, Prof. Umashankar B S, Dean - Academics and Dr. C. K. Manjunath, Administrator, were part of the inaugural ceremony. Around 50 students from various branches of final year engineering participated in the program.

KSCST Approves and Sponsors 2 more Biofuel Projects in the 39th Series Programme 2015-16

Both these projects were prepared under the guidance of Dr. S. Manjappa, Director (R&D, Consultancy) and Dr. K.K. Poornesh, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The KSCST project submission process was coordinated by Mr. Prasanna Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering.

Startup company HostZyro conducts training for students

HostZyro, certified web solution provider, a startup venture by Mr. Naresh Bhat and Rajan Kushwaha, the students of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, conducted a one-day training programme for the participants of “REPLICON” held in the Sahyadri campus. They trained the students on how to replicate a website and enhanced the knowledge of the students about the website. The other topics covered in the training programme were Basics of HTML, CSS, Internet, building and replicating a website.

Students from Sahyadri College of Engineering and Canara College of Engineering participated wholeheartedly in the workshop and praised HostZyro and Sahyadri for such a good initiative. This is the first successful workshop conducted by HostZyro with the support of Sahyadri College. The event “REPLICON” will be conducted in May 2016. Semester VIII Student Designs SSTH Booklet

Sujay Shetty Semester VIII, Department of Electronics & Communication has successfully designed the SSTH Booklet for the year 2015. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman and Prof. Umashankar, Dean Academics, have both appreciated his hard work and talent for coming up with the design of the booklet. Sujay has used Photoshop and Corel X5 designing software in the execution of the booklet. The SSTH Booklet - 2015 holds in depth information of the Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt event held in the year 2015.

Justdial conducted a pooled campus recruitment drive for the engineering students of the 2016 batch at the campus. Mr. Anand, HR, Justdial Limited accompanied by the panelists on the recruitment team was at the campus to facilitate the entire process. TVS & Sons Pvt. Ltd.; the parent company of the TVS Group, conducted a pooled campus recruitment drive for MBA students. Fifty-eight students from different colleges participated in the drive. The process of selection consisted of GD and an interview. The results are awaited.

Sahyadri Summer Camp Held at Meremajal Mandal Panchayat

The Sahyadri Summer Camp was inaugurated at Meremajal Mandal Panchayat by the participating children. Mrs.Vrinda, Ex-President and Mr. Francis Mendonsa member, Mandal Panchayat, Meremajal, Dr. C. K. Manjunath, Administrator and Mrs. Shreelatha U A, AAO, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management participated in the inaugural programme and wished them best of luck and requested the students to make the best use of it. Students and faculty members of Sahyadri are engaging children with group games, crafts, dance, and other activities. Around 25 children from the 4 local schools are participating. The Camp will continue till the 16th of April 2016.

At the valedictory function the students performed a prayer song and dance and exhibited the art and crafts which they prepared during the five days. Prof. B. S. Umashankar, Dean Academics, appreciated the student’s interest and invited them to visit the Sahyadri campus. Mrs. Vrinda, former President of Mandal Panchayath congratulated the children for having participated in the Camp. The children also shared their happiness of participating in the Camp.

Management, Staff & Students Pay Homage to Dr. B. R. Ambedkar

The 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, was celebrated in the College on the 14th of April 2016. Prof. S. S. Balakrishna, Vice Principal, Dean, Heads of Departments, Staff and Students of the College paid their respects. Ambedkar Jayanthi is celebrated every year in the College in honour of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

Workshop Held on Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation

A workshop on Renewable Energy And Energy Conservation was inaugurated in the presence of resource persons Dr S G Sreekanteswara Swamy, Executive Secretary, KSCST, Dr Uday Kumar Yeragatti, Professor, NITK, Mr. Vishnu A Chinagundi, Senior Consultant, KSCST and Dr. Richard Pinto, Director Research, Prof. Mahesh B Davanageri, HOD, Mechanical Engineering, Dr. K K Poornesh, Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering, faculty members and students of mechanical department and electronics & communication engineering of SCEM.

The inaugural session was presided over by Dr Richard Pinto followed by the sessions of resource persons who enlightened the gathering on the importance of renewable energy resources and energy conservation. Sessions focused more on applications and opportunities in the area of renewable energy resources and its outcomes. The sessions were followed by interaction of students with resource the persons.

Youth Empowerment & Motivation Programme

An inspirational programme on Youth Empowerment & Motivation was held in Sahyadri Campus. Swami Jitakamanandaji, Adhyaksha, Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru along with Swami Nirbhayananda Saraswathi, President, Ramakrishna Vivekananda Ashrams in Gadag and Bijapur, and Mr. Vinod Das, Director, Swami Vivekananda Integrated Rural Development Centre, Yaragatti, Belagavi were the invitees for this programme.

Swami Nirbhayananda Saraswathi, in his highly motivating lecture, explained that inspiration is the greatest drive in our life. Inspiration is an alarm to wake up; it is an inner-journey by ourself. He explained the teaching techniques, including description of how we need to teach and the justifications for our strategies to constitute our personal philosophy of teaching. Swamiji gave numerous examples to illustrate the knowledge strength of Indians in the fields of science and mathematics. He said that Indians fail to take risk in their life. He reminded the best quote of Swami Vivekananda, “Have faith in yourself”. He urged the students to build capacity to become future entrepreneurs. Swamiji conveyed the important message that “Every individual should have a clear goal” and to arise, awake and stop not till they achieve it.

Standard X Student Felicitated by Chairman

Master Abhishek, from 10th standard of NITK School, was felicitated by the Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary at the campus. Being associated and part of the DTlabz, he designed a 3D logo for Sahyadri. Abhishek’s passion lies in computer science related topics, Photoshop and animation. DTlabz calls for all such young talents to be a part of the lab and get trained to become great engineers of tomorrow.

Canara Bank Chief Manager Felicitated on Promotion

Mr. Kedlaya H. S., Chief Manager, Canara Bank, Valencia Branch, has been promoted as AGM and transferred to their Panaji Branch, Goa. As bankers to the college for many years, Dr. C. K. Manjunath, Administrator of the college and Mr. Manjaya Shetty A., Administrator, Bhandary Foundation, felicitated Mr. Kedlaya with a bouquet of flowers and a memento. On behalf of the staff and students they also wished him all success in his new assignment.

Abishek Clifford on Rescue from the Evils of Society

A session on Moral Awareness Programme and Cyber Ethics was conducted by Mr. Abishek Clifford, CEO, “Rescue” Research and Training Charity Trust, Mysore. Mr. Abishek is a statistics and ethics lecturer from London, who started Rescue NGO, in Mysore, India, ten years ago. They stress on the issues of youth abortions and human trafficking in India.

Mr. Abishek Clifford, interacted with II and III year students, regarding misuse of Internet content which affects our future generation. He said that life is an exam and one has to face it bravely. He discussed on moral issues focusing on the destructive nature of immorality, AIDS, the value of the life of a baby (before birth), the flood of pornography, human trafficking and the misuse of mobile and Internet. He addressed many social problems and requested students to uphold the dignity of our nation and to have moral accountability.

Dr. Niraj Joshi Receives DST-SERB-EMR Project Funding of INR 55.89 Lakhs

Dr. Niraj Joshi has received the prestigious DST-SERB-EMR research project fund of INR 55.89 lakhs for the project "Design, Fabrication and Characterization of Whispering Gallery Mode (WGM) resonators in Planar Waveguides for Detection of Bio- Molecules Using Terahertz Radiation". Recently DST-SERB-EMR has released Rs. 37.5 Lakhs to setup THz based bio-molecular detection laboratory.

Dr. Niraj Joshi, Center of Excellence in Nanoscience and Technology (CENT), SCEM, is the principal investigator and Prof. S. Prabhu, TIFR, Prof. A. Gopal, TIFR and Prof. S.Dattagupta, IITB are the co-investigators of this project. This project was submitted under the guidance of Prof. Richard Pinto, Director-CENT. The project aims to integrate low loss THz waveguides and WGM resonators with high Q factors suitable for detector applications in the area of biosensors/ biophotonics. THz based sensors are among the latest developments in single molecular detection in the area of bio-medical engineering and detection of explosives. Dr. Navin N. Bappalige’s DST project proposal selected for presentation

Dr. Navin N. Bappalige’s DST-SERB-EMR project titled ‘Development of PLD grown BiFeO3 Thin film ethanol sensor device’ has been selected for the prestigious DST-SERB-EMR presentation. The proposed fund in this proposal is Rs. 57 lakhs out of which Rs. 29 lakhs will be used for setting up Pulsed Laser Deposition thin film laboratory under Center of Excellence in Nanoscience and Technology (CENT). Dr. Navin. N. Bappalige, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics an active researcher of CENT, is the principal investigator, Prof. Richard Pinto, Director-CENT and Prof. S.Dattagupta, IITB are the co-investigators of this project. This project was prepared under the guidance of Prof. Richard Pinto and was submitted with the help of Dr. Jayarama A. The project aims to room temperature alcohol (Ethanol) detection with high selectivity and sensitivity, which have tremendous application as a device in traffic management (drunken driving), food fermentation, wine making and medical process etc. Read More…

Vikhyath VS from 1st year MBA secured 1st place with New Meet Record (NMR) in Discuss Throw by throwing 38.32 meters in the 18th VTU Inter-Collegiate Athletic Meet 2015-16 which was held at Sir. M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, Bengaluru. He bested the record created in the year 2009.
