4-Day Friendship Cup 2019 tournament featuring Heath Streak Academy XI gets under way at Sahyadri River Side Cricket Ground 4-Day Friendship Cup 2019 tournament featuring Heath Streak Academy XI gets under way at Sahyadri River Side Cricket Ground International Cricket U-14 and U-15 made a comeback in this coastal city when the 4 days Friendship Cup 2019 tournament was held at Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management ground, Adyar. The tournament featured Heath Streak Academy XI, Mangalore sports club and Mangalore Occassionals, with local team who played the final. Former Zimbabwe skipper Heath Streak said the tournament provided a good exposure to some exciting age group talent from back home headed by Daniel Erasmus and test their Cricketing skills against the local lads on their home conditions.

A Consultancy project on Technical Audit of Marine Export unit at TADADI, U.K District was undertaken by Dr. Rajesha, Dean-Academics as a Principal Investigator; Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director-Research & Consultancy as the Coordinator; Dr. Ravichandra K R, Head of Dept of Mechanical Engineering as the Co-Principal Investigator; Prof. Ajith B S, Dept of Mechanical Engineering as the Faculty Coordinator. This consultancy was offered by Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC), Mangaluru, a Govt. of Karnataka undertaking. The total project of Marine unit is worth Rs. 10 Crores and Rs. 2 Lakhs has been received as Consultancy fee for this project.

Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director-Research & Consultancy was invited by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Delhi for a presentation on the Application for fresh recognition of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru as a Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) is a department of the Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

The project report was prepared by Dr. Rajesh Shetty and Dr. Ratish Ghatti of Mechanical Engineering Department under the guidance of Dr. S Manjappa, Director (R&D).

He held an interactive session with the engineering and management students on the teaching learning process in the US. He explained as to how the students were able take up social issues, find solution through case studies and innovative methods. He explained as to how creativity is going to be the key differentiating factor while explaining the top skill sets required for workplace success by 2020.

Mr. Prabhu also interacted with the chairman and discussed about the collaborative work that our faculty and students can take up with the Penn State University. He visited in-house industries and appreciated the management efforts in embedding industry culture in the educational institution to make students industry ready.

Sahyadri Alumnus is 31st Seer of Udupi Putthige Mutt Sahyadri Alumnus is 31st Seer of Udupi Putthige Mutt Prashanth Acharya an Alumnus of Sahyadri is ordained to Sanyasa and will be the successor of Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji, Senior Seer of the Udupi Puttige Mutt. By this ordination, he will become the 31st Seer of the Mutt and will be known as Sushreendra Tirtha Swami.

Prashanth Acharya was a student of the first batch of Electronics & Communication Engineering. Through campus recruitment he got placed in HP. He also worked for Cognizant and Ericsson. But his calling was different. And he obeyed this calling and is now committed to a consecrated Hindu religious life.

Team Challengers secure positions in SAE International Aeromodelling West 2019 event held in USA

SAE-International-Aeromodelling-West-2019 Team Challengers participated in the Three-Day International level Competition named "SAE International Aeromodelling West 2019" at Apollo 11 Field, Woodley Ave, California, USA. The time comprised of Meghana N Shetty from 3rd Year Electronics & Communication Engineering and Roshan, Shreenidhi and Harshan from 1st year Engineering. There were a total of 75 teams from all over the world who participated in the event and Team Challenges has secured 5th position in Oral presentation and 9th position in Overall performance globally.

Achievements of Sahyadri students at IIT Roorkee

Achievements of Sahyadri students at IIT Roorkee Team ‘Udam Clan’ of Sahyadri comprising of students from various engineering disciplines, participated in Technical Fest Cogizance 2019 held at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. This Fest saw the active participation of 23 students.

Cognizance is the largest technical fest in India that conducts 75+ events with over 30,000 participants. Dr. Kailasavadivoo Sivan, Chairperson – ISRO, presided over as chief guest and inaugurated the fest. Sahyadri students bagged 4th place in Event Poseidon, 5th place in Cyborg Break-In, and 10th place in Quadrone. They also participated in Productathon. The students also attended the World Quant Championship Workshop on learning how to build an ‘Alpha’.

The students who participated in the event were Anjana Hegade, Ananya P.J., Ashwitha, Ancita, Anusha, Ashitha, Deekshith, Dhanush Bangera, Jamsheedha, Kritika, Mayur Pai B.H., Neeraj, Neeharika, Poornima, Rahul Mogar, Shraddha, Shreya, Shreerekha, Sebastian, Shishir Alva, Tanuja and Yashas. Dean Examination – Prof. Sudheer Shetty and Dr. J V Gorabal, Head of CSE Department felicitated her for the outstanding achievement. She was one the best outgoing students of CSE Department during her course of engineering at Sahyadri. She got placed in Moonraft Innovation Labs with a package of Rs. 8 lakhs per annum.

The Chief Guest of the day was Mr. Umesh Kamath of Robosoft Technologies. The President of the day was Mr. Jagannath Chowta, Trustee - Bhandary Foundation. Mr. Devadas Hegde Trustee - Bhandary Foundation & Project In-charge, was the Guest of Honour. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal and Mr. S.S. Balakrishna, Vice Principal, also graced the function. Dr. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, in his welcome speech expressed his pleasure at having such eminent personalities to grace the function. He highlighted the various achievements of students and how Sahyadri is growing by leaps and bounds year after year.

Mr. S.S. Balakrishna, Vice Principal placed before the audience the annual report for the Academic Year 2018-19. He stated that this academic year the highest admission status was achieved by Sahyadri which stands at 100%. Before concluding his speech, he applauded the rank holders and gold medalists. He further went on to say that these students have created history and have lifted Sahyadri to newer heights.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Umesh Kamath is the Vice President & Head-Human Possibilities, Robosoft Technologies. He is a HR Professional with two decades of work experience. He specializes in Talent Transformation, Change Management, HR IT Systems, and Performance Management Systems etc. His key achievements are, managing the global workforce internationally, taking care of their mobility, and creating global mobility policies & shared services for HR.

In his speech Mr. Kamath said that the present millennial generation and that of the Nineties are very fortunate predominantly because of three aspects. The first aspect is getting easily enrolled in college and getting placements. Second aspect is being born in Karnataka and getting moral support from parents. Third, is being born in India. Mr. Kamath concluded by congratulating all who created this beautiful ecosystem at Sahyadri, including all visionaries and trustees and lauded the college for its excellence in different fields.

ARPAN-2K19 ARPAN-2K19 Computer Legends of the Unified Department at Sahyadri (CLOUDS) of Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering organized an event “ARPAN-2K19”. More than Forty events were conducted with a view to raise funds for donating to orphanages in and around the city. Ms. Pavithree B Shetty, an alumna of CSE who secured 1st rank in VTU with 4 gold medals was the Chief Guest of the event. While addressing the gathering, Pavithree said that one should be passionate about their dreams to achieve it. She also re-iterated that we can make most prominent heights of success by focusing towards our goals. Dr. J V Gorabal, Head of Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) in his Presidential address appreciated the efforts of CLOUDS and the support of all the faculty members and students in raising the funds. OFF ROAD ROBO 2019 OFF ROAD ROBO 2019 The Department of Mechanical Engineering organised “OFF ROAD ROBO 2019” an Intercollegiate Robot Racing Competition. The event saw participation of over 25 teams from six different colleges and provided students an opportunity to showcase their technical skills in the field of Robotics.

The event was inaugurated by the proud Sahyadri Alumni Ms Ramya K., Asst Mechanical Engineer, KSRTC, Mangaluru and Ms. Saksha Shetty, Engineer, Autoliv, Bengaluru. In her inaugural address, Ms Ramya spoke on the importance of gaining deeper insights in the field of Engineering. Ms. Saksha spoke on the opportunities and challenges facing women in the field of mechanical engineering. Prof Ravichandra K., Head, Dept of Mechanical Engineering presided over the function.

Occupational Health and Safety in Industries Occupational Health and Safety in Industries Mechanical Engineering department organized a one-day seminar on “Occupational Health and Safety in Industries" for Sixth Semester and selected Eighth Semester students of mechanical Engineering. Capt. Ramprasad, Director and Mr. Ramesh Babu, Managing Director, Call for Safety and Quality Solutions Pvt. Ltd, Mangaluru, were the resource persons. In two separate sessions, each of them explained about the importance of safety in day today life, industries, working areas, domestic places etc. Opportunities for mechanical engineering students in the safety fields such as marine, chemical industries were explained in detail. They also mentioned about the various certification courses which will help for placement activities.

The main aim of the workshop was to give an insight on cadence tool and ignite the interest of students. This session was organized in view of the future demand for the tool.

Morning session involved briefing about basics of Analog electronics, Digital electronics and the tool. Theory and practical sessions on schematic, simulation and layout concepts on VlSI was performed in the afternoon session. The sessions were very interactive. A total of 105 students benefitted from the workshop which was facilitated by the Student trainers - Arpita, Veekshitha, Priya, Punya, Ranjith, Hamdan and Savitha.

Developer Student Clubs train thousands of student developers globally and work with their communities to solve real-life problems. Google Developer Groups collaborates with university students who are passionate about growing developer communities and supports them with starting student clubs in their campuses.

DSCs provide students with the opportunity to:
• Grow their knowledge on developer technologies and more through peer to peer workshops and events
• Gain relevant industry experience by solving problems for local organizations with technology based solutions
• Showcase their prototypes and solutions to their local community and industry leaders

Akshay Ram Bhat, Melwin Lobo and Afroz Hussain of DSC, Sahyadri worked with the DSC NITTE team to conduct the event. Beginning with the basics of Data Analysis, they covered basic Machine Learning algorithms used commonly in the industry with hands-on sessions as well. This workshop saw participation from 40 enthusiasts.

Prof. Dinesh Prasad, Chairman of Noble Business School; Prof. Sudheendra, Head of BCA Department of Noble Business School and Prof. Muzhamin, Faculty of Noble Business School of Bengaluru are the facilitators of the Training. Dept. of Business Administration-MBA evaluates the course curriculum from time to time and introduces training programmes for students to bridge any gap in the curriculum in order to enhance the student’s employability. This is one of its initiatives to make its students on par with the corporate demands. Data Analysts are highly sought after profiles by the recruiting firms and trainings like these will open new avenues of placement for students.

New Age Incubation Network – NAIN New Age Incubation Network – NAIN NAIN is aimed at assisting the educational institutions nurture an ecosystem for promoting entrepreneurship and innovation in different states of Karnataka.

As a part of the process, Dr. B.S Basanti, General Manager - KITS accompanied by Mr. Mohan Kumar, Executive - KITS from NAIN team visited Sahyadri to inspect the facilities. The team was taken through the campus and an interaction session was arranged with students on their respective projects which were funded. The NAIN team was led by our seasoned leader Dr. S Manjappa, Director-Research & Consultancy along with our beloved Principal Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte and Dr. Rajesha S - Dean Academics.

As a part of the inspection, Dr. B.S Basanti, viewed the presentation of all the student projects which were sanctioned for funding. She interacted with the Company Heads & also the Start-Up’s set up within the campus. During the interaction the representatives demonstrated the various products developed by their respective companies and discussed about their future Road Map. A total of 11 projects have been selected for the first batch and have been funded by NAIN.

Koshik Raj is an information security enthusiast who holds a Master's degree in computer science and information security. He has a background of working with RSA, a network security company. He has also worked as a senior developer in CoWrks, Bengaluru. He has handed over one of the copies to Sahyadri Department Library as a token of love and gratitude towards the institution. Dreamathon 2019 held at Sahyadri Dreamathon - Mangalore’s largest coding Hackathon was initiated by DSI- Dream Soft Innovations in association with Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, in collaboration with NAIN, Government of Karnataka, Dtlabz, and Host Zyro. It visualized events such as Code Hunt, Hackathon, Dreamathon and Gamethon, where the technocrats were provided with a wonderful opportunity to explore their ideas, their thoughts to the real world within the time limit of 30 hours. It became the platform for the enthusiasts to expel their knowledge and their craziness towards coding. Summer Camp 2019 by DTlabz in Sahyadri Campus Summer Camp 2019 by DTlabz in Sahyadri Campus Summer Camp 2019 by DTlabz began at Sahyadri with a bunch of young talented kids of the age group between 10 -16 years from various schools in and around Mangaluru with the quest to discover new insights about technical knowledge.

The camp started with a session from Mr. Gautham Nayak briefing the students about the camp with the theme of knowing oneself and team building activities followed by a glimpse of fun with electronics session by Gagandeep. The entire day was filled with fun and learning as the teams opened the door to make new friends.

Second day of Summer Camp 2019 began with new friends coming together with enthusiasm. The day started with action song and games as a warm up exercise followed by the design thinking activity wherein children were asked to make an innovative bag which fulfills the needs of the customer to bring out the true potential of their creative thinking. Presentation of their creativity in front the crowd focused on enhancing their confidence. Working on tinker cad and dream kit brought new experiences to the young brains.

JEE Main 2019 Online Exam in Sahyadri Campus

The JEE Main 2019 for April session Online Exams were conducted in College computer labs in 2 batches with 150 students in each batch. A total of 1,500 students attempted the Test.

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) MAIN is conducted by the NTA from 2019 onwards. JEE Main is applicable for admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs participating though Central Seat Allocation Board subject to the condition that the candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination.

MBA Faculty & Students attend ‘NIPM Regional Conference for Students’ National Institute of Personnel Management (NIPM), Mangaluru Chapter organized a ‘Regional Conference for Students’ and arranged talks from eminent personalities who focussed on current trends and needs of the students. Sahyadri MBA Department has an institutional membership with NIPM and has organized various events collaboratively in the past. Hon Advisor at NSDC interacts with the Faculty Mr. Venkatesh S.V., MD and CEO, RiiiT, Mysore who is also the Hon Advisor at National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) visited Sahyadri and held an interactive session with the faculty and staff. He expressed how excited he was to visit the innovation labs and in-house start-ups and industries established inside the campus. He was amazed on seeing students working in these industries and exhibiting hands-on ability in the area of student’s interest. He even appreciated the round tables installed in the study area and had words of praise on how comfortably a student was teaching her peers on a particular concept. He gave heads up on NSDC, its role and its future plans related to Skill India. He encouraged faculty to upload proposals on NSDC website for setting up a Skill Centre at Sahyadri.

Students of Udgam house visited IIT Roorkee Solar Project Twenty three students of first year engineering house Udgam visited Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR).

These students are working on a project to make Sahyadri Campus eco-friendly mainly using solar energy. During this process, they got an opportunity to visit IIT Roorkee that has Solar panels on all its buildings, solar water heaters for hostels and solar cookers in canteen and mess. They interacted with the faculty and staff who manage the solar project. Project and the students are being mentored by Basavarajeshwari Ambi from fourth semester Dept of Information Science & Engineering.

Android 101 workshop conducted by DSC Developer Student Clubs (affiliated to SOSC) conducted their first workshop on Android application development, to introduce the students to the application development world. Developer Student Clubs train thousands of student developers globally and work with their communities to solve real-life problems.

Google collaborates with university students who are passionate about growing developer communities and supports them with starting student clubs on their campuses.

DSCs provide students with the opportunity to:
• Grow their knowledge on developer technologies and more through peer to peer workshops and events.
• Gain relevant industry experience by solving problems for local organizations with technology based solutions.
• Showcase their prototypes and solutions to their local community and industry leaders.

The Android 101 started with the basic introduction to the Android Studio followed by the application development. Around 25 students attended the workshop. The students interacted with the speakers and learnt to build Android Application.

This course is an introduction to programming and problem solving in Python. This is an 8-Week course. This course has been mentored by Dr. J V Gorabal; Mr. Duddela Sai Prashanth and Mr. Vijay C P.

Another set of students from Dept of Computer Science & Engineering (M Kshama Kalkur, Adhithi Pai B, Drusti GB and Varsha K V) have been certified in Database Management Systems offered by NPTEL. This is again an 8-Week course.

The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) was initiated by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati and Roorkee) along with the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru in the year 2003. Five core disciplines were identified, namely, civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering and mechanical engineering and 235 courses in web/video format were developed.

In his talk, Dr Madhusoodana spoke extensively on application of phase change materials in the field thermal energy storage. He further dwelt on implications of nanotechnology and challenges in the field of material science. He also called on students of mechanical engineering to take up research in the field of advanced materials. The department also explored the possible internship and employment opportunities for the students at BHEL Bangalore.
