Sahyadri Celebrates the 73rd Independence Day
The 73rd celebration of our Independence Day was viewed with joy and pride by the staff and students of Sahyadri. Mr. Ashith B Hegde, Managing Director – Arkieva Asia Pacific, Chief Guest, hoisted the national flag after which the gathered students, faculty members and the staff sang the national anthem with pride. The Student Council of Sahyadri was then introduced to the guest by Prof. Balakrishna SS, Vice-Principal.

Ashith is leading the Arkieva Asia Pacific business in Mangaluru. Prior to this, he worked at Arkieva headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. His area of expertise includes demand management, inventory planning, investment analysis and KPI reporting using Arkieva Software. He has experience of 12 years in this field. Ashith has a Master of Engineering in Industrial and Systems Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Supply Chain and Operations Management from the University at Buffalo, New York. He is also certified in Production & Inventory Management.

While addressing the gathering, Ashith, expressed how privileged he felt to be invited for this grand occasion at Sahyadri. He appreciated the celebration at grand scale for the huge number of students and faculty gathered during the ceremony. He shared his perspective of how he looks at Independent India in 3 stages – 1947, 1991-92 and the current period of Advancement in Technology and Business and how India is growing economically. He urged students to follow their passion, enhance their networking capability and be part of the Economic growth of India. Money is not everything, it’s important to follow one’s dream and that’s why he returned to India in order to contribute to India’s Economy. He said it’s a great feeling of accomplishment.

The Achievers of 2018-19 in extracurricular activities like Sports, Cultural & Scouts & Guides were felicitated on the auspicious occasion of Independence Day.
Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman was also present during the celebration.

Cultural Performances & Competition in view of Independence Day Celebration Department of Art & Culture organized an inter-department Variety Entertainment Competition for the faculty on Aug 15th’19. Faculty members from Computer Science & Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and MBA took part and exhibited their talent.

Cultural Performances & Competition in view of Independence Day Celebration MBA Department emerged as the Winner and Department of Computer Science & Engineering was Runners-up. The Winners and Runners-up were awarded by Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal; Dr. Rajesha S, Dean-Academics and the judges - Ms. Rakshitha, Mr. Raj Guru Hoskote and Ms. Nayana Sooda.

In addition to this, Best Dressed Male and Best Dressed Female competition (Theme of Independence Day) was also held for the Teaching & Non-Teaching Staff.

BOOTCAMP organized at Sahyadri A workshop on Entrepreneurship- “E-Step boot camp” was conducted by Karnataka Innovation & Technology Society in association with startup Karnataka, NAIN & Sahyadri college of Engineering & Management.

The program was inaugurated by Karnataka startup cell representative Mr. Abrar Ahmed & Mr Vishnu Nagaraj in the presence of Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director R&D.

BOOTCAMP organized at SahyadriBOOTCAMP organized at Sahyadri Mr. Abrar Ahmed, in his speech, gave an insight on the Boot camp and a brief about startup Karnataka, it’s policies and schemes.

Dr. Manjappa Sarathi graced an occasion by sharing the importance of having more number of startups in the present competitive world.

Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte encouraged the participants and highlighted the importance of the design thinking as well as innovative thinking.

The Boot camp consisted of different sessions on Ideation, product design, marketing and development, customer engagement, business model making and creating a pitch deck.

Also, Mr Raghav Shetty from RDL Technologies delivered a mentor talk about his start up journey and success story.

The Program was presided by Mr.VidyaShankar Bollava, Incubation center manager for K-Tech Nain Center Sahyadri College of engineering & management.

Around 187 students from various branches including First year has actively participated in the Boot camp.

He is a Post Graduate in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Science (IISc). After retiring from Reliance Industries, he has engaged himself in Pro Bono Consultancy (Latin Word – For the Good of Public), shares his experiences and helps early start-ups & small corporate houses in their growth.

Induction Programme for Engineering Batch 2019Induction Programme for Engineering Batch 2019 Two-Week AICTE Model Student Induction Programme commenced for the new batch of engineering students effective 1st Aug’19. The programme aims at familiarizing students to the Sahyadri Culture and Environment and includes sessions on Universal Human Values, Team Building, Group Living, Health and Safety, Yoga and Exercise, Sports Activities, Creative arts, Drama and Theatre, Life Skills, Soft Skills, Relationships Values and so on.

The programme began with an inaugural ceremony of unveiling the streamer by the Principal Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte. The programme continued with an interactive session on ‘Why Induction Programme?’ by the Vice-Principal Prof. S S Balakrishna. The Deans and Heads of various departments introduced themselves and extended a warm welcome to the fresher’s. The students were then divided into three batches for further sessions facilitated by Prof. Manjunatha Kamath, Prof. Samarth Shenoy, Prof. Prashanth Rao and Mr. Ankith S Kumar. Induction continued till 14th of August 2019.

Smart Shopping Cart Smart Shopping Cart Mr. Raghavendra Shetty, CEO-RDL Technologies Pvt Ltd., explained the basic features of the cart having express checkout as its primary feature. He also said – “It provides a complete stop for people awaiting longer queues during checkouts”. He quoted some features - location based advertisement, product navigation, and recipe recommendations and so on. The second session was taken over by Mr. Pradeep Kumar, Design Engineer, RDL on important facts to be considered while understanding IoT, with a test case for condition monitoring system. More than 40+ people benefited from this programme as a session for the Sahyadri IoT Future Skill Group.

Smart Shopping Cart Smart Shopping Cart Mr. Ramani Venkat, Director of Gurusthaan, Bengaluru interacted with the students of MBA on 8th Aug’19. Mr. Ramani has been associated with Sahyadri for more than 5 years now and is well acquainted with the standard of the institution. In this context, he began his interaction by giving insights on the brand phenomenon Sahyadri has been maintaining over the years.
In his interaction, he emphasised on the significance of Aptitude, MS-Excel and Data Analytics which are crucial to fetch a position in any organization and that they should upgrade themselves time to time to meet the industry requirements in terms of skills. He encouraged students to let go of their fear about Interview and that communication and basic etiquettes are key to placements. He concluded the session by answering the queries students had related to their employment opportunities.

He addressed students and faculty members of Mechanical Engineering Department. Fresher’s Day at SahyadriFresher’s Day at Sahyadri Mr. Srinivas Gowda R, IPS, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mangalore City & Mr. Girish Shivanna, Founder & CEO, Test Yantra Software Solutions, were the guests for the Fresher’s Day held at Sahyadri on 24th Aug’19.

During the Inaugural ceremony, Chairman Mr. Manjunath Bhandary in his introductory remarks reiterated that students should enjoy 4 years of Engineering in a right direction in this institution. He stated, “Learning should be achieved through pleasure & not with pressure”. He highlighted about the Guests giving brief about how they have achieved heights of success in their life by adopting the working culture through dedication and commitment. The lighting of the lamp marked inauguration of the programme.

Mr. Srinivas Gowda R, is 2016 batch IPS officer, currently serving as the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mangalore. He secured All India 105 Rank in UPSC Civil Service Examination & got into IPS borne to Karnataka Cadre. He has a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics & Communication from Bangalore Institute of Technology.

He addressed the students about importance of being updated with the current affairs in this competitive world. He also encouraged them to have foresight of their career and excel in their particular field. He advised students to choose their peer group wisely. He concluded with a few success mantras to the audience.

Mr. Girish Shivanna, is seasoned executive, leader, founder & CEO of Test Yantra Software Solutions, QSpiders & JSpiders and Flagroot. Over the years Mr. Girish has played pivotal roles & has been instrumental in co-founding number of companies. He has trained lot of people under his leadership in IT services.

He portrayed his own life as an example of how a person can be successful. He mentioned students that getting good marks is as important as understanding subject. He appreciated Chairman for his thoughtful perception. He was also overwhelmed to see first year student’s projects.

Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, the Principal, gave away the presidential address.

Formal function was followed by cultural events by first year students. The students put up an energizing show with dance and singing performance.

Sahyadri observes Sadbhavana Diwas Sahyadri observes Sadbhavana Diwas In commemoration of Sadbhavana Diwas, to mark the 75th birth anniversary of Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the students and faculty of Sahyadri took an oath of oneness and harmony on August 20th’19. Sadbhavana Diwas is celebrated on 20th August every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. This day is observed to encourage the national integration, peace, affection and communal harmony among the Indians of all religion. The students and faculty took a pledge to work for the emotional oneness and harmony of India regardless of caste, region, religion or language and further pledge that they shall resolve all differences through dialogue and constitutional means without resorting to violence.

During the inaugural ceremony Mr. Divakar Kadri, Chairman of NIPM, Mangaluru Chapter welcomed the participants and thanked Sahyadri for supporting the organization in their efforts to contribute to the student’s development. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA appreciated the initiatives of NIPM in organizing events in huge numbers reaching out to maximum students.

Mr. Udayakumar M was the Quiz Master who was facilitating his 322nd Quiz that day. He is working as a Professor of Clinical Education in SDM Law College and popular among students for his passion for teaching without a single day LEAVE in his tenure as a Teacher. He is also a mentor of famous ‘Traditional Tiger Dance’ of Mangaluru and a patron of it. In recognition of his contribution to the field of Education, Mr. Udayakumar M was felicitated by the NIPM and Sahyadri Team.

Finally, Two Teams – One from Sahyadri MBA Department (Ismail Rishan & Josvina Machado) and the other from School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya emerged as qualifiers to participate in the Chapter Level Quiz that would be held in Bengaluru, end of this month.

She had discussions with Prof. Alex Newman, Associate Dean-International, Faculty of Business and Law and Mr. Mathew Cameron, Senior International Officer, Deakin Business School at the Melbourne Burwood campus. The discussions revolved around students and faculty exchange programme. The proposal was for a year of study in India and a year in Australia and credit programs for different specializations.

She also visited Swinburne Institute of Technology, Melbourne and had discussions with Prof. De-Anne Richards, Director- International education Partnership and Dr. Doan Nguyen, Academic Director Engagement, Faculty of Business and Law at the Hawthorne Melbourne campus. Efforts are on to collaborate with the engineering streams in terms of the future skills.

Former Chairman of Karnataka State Pollution Board visited Sahyadri Mr. H C Sharatchandra, a former Chairman of Karnataka State Pollution Board & Present Expert Appraisal Committee Member of Ministry of Environment & Forest Government of India, New Delhi visited Sahyadri on 24th Aug’19. He appreciated the college infrastructure, training modules offered, skill development course designed and the Industry connect programmes provided to students. He opined that Sahyadri is one of the model colleges of the country as per the facilities provided in the campus. He was accompanied by Dr. Lakshmikanth of State Karnataka Pollution Control Board, Udupi District. Their visit was facilitated by Dr. S. Manjappa, Director-Research and Dr. Rajesha S, Dean- Academics.

He urged students to be SMART to deal with complexity and fit into stressful corporate world. He made the session worthy by giving an illustration of an efficient cook to be hired which gave the student a learning impact on how to fill those gaps which we are lagging behind and find the way to work on it. The session would be helpful for the MBA students in adapting to their work place.

Bridge Course for New Entrants to MBA Batch 2019Bridge Course for New Entrants to MBA Batch 2019 A Six-Day Bridge Course for the new entrants to MBA Batch 2019 has been planned during 26th to 31st Aug’19 with sessions from in-house faculty and industry experts.

On 26th Aug’19, Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA encouraged students to navigate the institution website and stimulated the students to focus on their goals as there are enormous opportunities at Sahyadri including internships at in-house industries.

Prof. Ramesh K G, Dean-Strategic Planning addressed the students and shared the importance to learn, unlearn and relearn as they have just stepped into their professional course of MBA. He also advised to add passion and positive attitude to work as success is not easy and can be achieved only through hard work.

Prof. Manjunatha Kamath conducted series of activities which aimed at removing stage fear and helped students to develop Team Management Skills. Mr. Abhijith Karkera, Manager-Swiggy, Mangaluru facilitated a Brain storming activity and conducted Personality interview which encouraged students to be outspoken and come out of their comfort zone.

Talk on Cyber Security and Consumer Awareness Talk on Cyber Security and Consumer Awareness On 27th Aug’19, the first session of the Bridge Course was facilitated by Prof. Padmanabha B on the topic – ‘Self-Introspection’. Through an activity-based session, Prof. Padmanabha brought out the need to look inward and examine one’s own thoughts, ideas and feelings as it’s a kind of regular check on self development which helps to know what we have achieved so far.

The second session was conducted by Prof. Sushma V on ‘Life Skills’. She gave practice sessions on Pronunciation of words sounding ‘V’, ‘W’, ‘P’, ‘C’, ‘R’ and ‘L’ which are crucial to be pronounced accurately.

Afternoon session was facilitated by Prof. Manoj Louis, Govt. First Grade College, Kavoor on the topic - ‘Team Building’. This was again an activity-based session which stimulated students to work in Teams in order to achieve success and that the sense of accomplishment will be immense in such team driven targets and tasks.

The second session was conducted by Prof. Suchithra A, relating to Stock Market and the importance of Investment. Students were introduced to various financial services available in ‘Sahyadri Capital Advisors LLP’, an MBA Start-Up and disseminated the internship opportunities available for the students. She also encouraged the students to invest in share market and earn good returns.

The afternoon session was conducted by Mr. Prajwal Karkera, an alumnus of Sahyadri MBA (Batch 2015-17). His session focussed on the importance of communication and team work by conducting activities like - “Walk and Talk”, “Mad Ads” and “Game of Perspectives”. Earlier, Mr. I L Narasimha Rao was the Project Manager at CDAC. He writes Articles in the News Media, creates Cyber Security Awareness through All India Radio (AIR) and Doordharshan. Over the past years his focus has been on linking through Educational Departments, CBSE, State and Central Government Agencies, Private sector for communication & outreach policy, in development of training Programs on Information Cyber security Awareness to all stakeholders.

Mr. Janice Verghese pursued B.Tech LL.B from the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun with specialization in Cyber Laws. During the course of her education she studied both the technical and legal aspects of the internet which helped to understand the intricacies of cybercrime and the kind of regulation needed to minimize and control it.

Their talk included awareness on Net etiquette, various possibilities of cyber trap and importance of laws and policies. They also shared various case studies and educated students on content removal. Students also received access to Online Resource Centre, with a repository of videos, checklists, advisories, government policies and reports.

Mr. Kishore Attavar, Honorary Director of Extension service Centre, School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru addressed the first year engineering students on various problems in the Waste Management sector. He gave an overview of how Mangaluru City manages waste and highlighted the reasons behind the tragedic Pachanady incident, where in the waste from the dumping area has drifted and caused serious damage to nearby villages. He also stressed the importance of behavioural change towards concept of waste and the concept of reduce, re-use and recycling of waste.

The expert has put across problem statements from the sector which will be taken up by the students as research projects. As a part of the Social Innovation Programme, students will apply design thinking process in finding solutions to these problems.

Bridge Course for New Entrants to MBA Batch 2019Bridge Course for New Entrants to MBA Batch 2019 Team Challengers conducted Aero-modelling Workshop during 24th to 25th Aug’19. The aircraft models developed during the aero-modelling workshop were a major attraction for students. Over 72 students from various colleges participated in this Two-Day workshop. A total of 15 teams with mentors competed with each other.

Day One had interesting theoretical sessions covering the basics of aerodynamics and calculations concerning the fundamental stability of the planes. Aircraft model requires presence of mind and sound knowledge of flight principles, therefore, the day continued with the elaborated explanation of different kinds of wings, tails and other configurations. During the second part of the day, the participants where introduced to basic operations on the software XFLR.

Looking at the urge of students to learn more, the second day began with each student having hands-on experience on building a plane. Avispad-15 was the chosen model to build. The team building the finest model with proper aerodynamics was awarded. Students were given exposure to design wing profiles and construction of aircraft models, also giving them heads-up on the software’s for developing new models. The workshop concluded with an overwhelming ‘Air-Show’, which inspired students.

Director DXC Technology addresses MBAs on Work Life Management Mr. Manoj KP, Director DXC Technology addressed the second year MBA students, regarding ‘Work Life Management’. Mr. Manoj made the students understand about Maslow’s need hierarchy theory in comparison to his version of Maslow’s 2.0 theory that is feasible to the trends of new generation. He spoke on adaptability, co-working place and stress management. He also threw light on how Human beings and animals are evolving according to the environment with the help of Artificial Intelligence.

Executive Director of Padi-Valored Mangaluru addressed first year engineering students As a part of Social Innovation Programme, an Expert Talk on Education Sector was held in the campus on 29th Aug’19 facilitated by Mr. Renni D’Souza, the Executive Director - Padi Valored Mangaluru. He addressed the first year engineering students on various problems in the Education Sector, presented the overview of Education System in South Kanara District, highlighted the importance of Quality in Education and emphasised on the role of Parents in children’s education. The expert has shared problem statements of this sector which will be taken up by students as research projects.

Sahyadri Girls team has now qualified for the VTU inter-zone Chess Tournament to be held at SJMIT, Chithradurga during 20th to 21st Aug’19.

Rajesh T Mathew, Mentee of Dr. Vishal Samartha (2014-16) MBA batch publishes a Paper in Scopus Journal


Mr. Rajesh Mathew from the MBA batch of 2014-16 worked on ‘Application of Lev and Schwartz compensation Model’ at MCF, Mangaluru for his Final Year fourth semester project. It was through this project on HR Analytics that he procured a job as “Specialist in Accreditation and Quality Assurance Office” in the Kingdom University Bahrain. After three years, the proud mentee worked on the same project and published a paper in the Scopus Journal, International Journal of Scientific and Technology Research with Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA as the first author. In the words of Rajesh Mathew he says, 'this is the least I could do to my mentor'.

This would be a great inspiration to all Mentors to give their best without any expectation and the happiness from the same is unimaginable.

"Hello Freshers!” a Session by Mozilla Sahyadri

Hello Freshers a Session by Mozilla Sahyadri On Thursday 29th Aug’19, a session on Introduction to open source and domains under Mozilla open source community was held. It was a hands-on session where students did their first open source contribution on GitHub. The session was attended by most of the enthusiastic freshers.

Mozilla Club Sahyadri is an open-source developer hub where developers contribute, learn and help each other grow. Mozilla Club Sahyadri which is under Sahyadri Open Source Community (SOSC) has four main domains namely, Web development, Open design, Game development and Mixed Reality. Interested learners can be a part of Mozilla Sahyadri, choose a domain of their interest and start exploring.

The session was conducted by Domain Leads Mr. Muhammad Bilal Hussain from Third year Computer Science & Engineering; Ms. Basavarajeshwari Ambi from Third year Information Science & Engineering; Mr. Newton Fernandez from Second year Information Science & Engineering; Mr. Swastik Shetty from Second year Information Science & Engineering and GitHub Campus Expert Mr. Akashdeep Bhagat from Third year Computer Science & Engineering.

The second part of the session will be held in the upcoming week.

Sahyadri Toastmasters Installation Ceremony

Sahyadri Toastmasters Installation Ceremony The Sahyadri Toastmasters Club conducted their Installation Ceremony on Friday, August 30th 2019, for the term July 2019 to December 2019. Toastmasters International (TI) is a US headquartered non-profit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of promoting communication and public speaking skills. The Principal, Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte was the Chief Guest for the event. The Area Director, Toastmaster Sukanya and DTM Divyashree Gatii were also present for the felicitation of the incoming office bearers. The new team for the upcoming term consists of President - TM Madhura Hegde, VP Education- TM Hiba Fathima, VP PR- TM Nihal Sanil, VP Membership- TM Shivaprasad, Secretary- TM Nishanth Bhandary , Treasurer- TM Shraddha Shetty and Sergeant at arms- TM Shrivatsa. The event was graced by the presence of guiding force of the Sahyadri Toastmasters Club, Toastmaster Molly Chowdri and Toastmaster Samarth.

Expert Talk on Horticultural Sector As a part of Social Innovation Programme, an Expert Talk on Horticulture Sector was held in the campus on 30th Aug 2019. Mr. Joe Pradeep Dsouza, Senior Assistant Director Horticulture, Mangaluru addressed the first year engineering students on the interventions in the horticulture sector and also presented the overview of irrigation sector. He stressed on medicinal plants and its importance, guided on the technological opportunities available for students. The expert has shared the various problem statements from this sector which will be taken up by students as research project.

MBA student invited as a Resource Person for 'Swaccha Manas' initiative at Carmel Convent High School, Modankap Ms. Uma N Shenoy, a student from 2nd Year MBA was invited as a resource person for 'Swaccha Manas' Phase 5 of Ramakrishna Mission's Cleanliness Drive at Carmel Convent High School, Modankap on 29th Aug’19. During her talk, she enlightened the students about the importance of keeping the surroundings clean. She re-iterated the importance of personal hygiene. Her session was activity-based in order to bring about the concept of 'Learning with Fun'. A total of 109 students of 8th and 9th Standard attended this session.
