The seminar was organized by Center of Excellence in Nano-science & Technology (CENT) in association with the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management.

Dr. Burkhard Fechner in his inaugural address spoke about the historical perspective of lasers and especially, the origin of Excimer lasers starting from the early effort in the development of Excimer Lasers at Lambda Physik Germany. He also talked about Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) other applications of Excimer Lasers.

Prof. Richard Pinto, Director, CENT, explained the genesis of PLD starting with the first publication of the growth of superconducting film using Excimer laser in 1987. He thanked Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, for funding the Excimer laser and also Coherent (Dr. Burkhard Fechner and Dr. Lalit Kumar) for co-sponsoring the Excimer laser. The total cost of the laser with special gases for operation is about Rs. 1 Crore. The Coherent-Excimer Laser Compex-Pro 201 is the only gas laser with high energy over 750mJ in the west coast of India excluding the institutions at Mumbai.

Pulsed Laser Deposition is a powerful technique for the growth of thin films of multi-component complex materials. Hence, the inauguration of Excimer laser will act as nucleus for CENT and the research effort on thin films and Nano-materials is to make rapid progress, especially with collaboration with neighboring institutions and industry partners.

Dr. Fechner received PhD in 1987 from University of Hannover, Germany, in "Laser Atomic Spectroscopy in High Electric and Magnetic fields". Dr. Lalit Kumar as a head of Laser Science Services (I) Pvt.
