TEDxSCEM 2019 – “How Unpredictable Are You?”
Sahyadri hosted its very first TEDxSCEM on July 28th’19, Sunday, an event organized under the banner of TEDx. The programme had a combination of 8 speakers and various cultural performances. It saw participation from 70 enthusiasts ranging in the age group from 16 to 85.
Gist of the Talks:
 
• Mr. Siddharth Rajhans, Principal Policy Officer United Nations, spoke on Entrepreneurship Domain and explained about the new trends and developments in the economy
• Mr. Swastik Padma, Young Scientist and Innovator from Puttur, spoke on Technical Domain and shared his journey from a small village of Puttur to getting a minor Planet named after him
 
• Ms. Kavitha Mishra, an Agriculturist known for her innovative Agricultural techniques, encouraged youth to develop interest in farming and gave inputs on how one can make farming a profitable one
• Ms. Dhanya Ravi, popularly known as the “Glass Woman” with more than 300 fractures in her body, inspired the audience with her remarkable stories on how she overcame all odds to lead a happy life
 
• Ms. Karishma Arora, All India CBSC Topper and a Classical Dancer, entertained the audience by demonstrating the Power of Dance and its benefits to the individuals
• Dr. Rohan Chandragatti, Senior Consultant-Dept. of Oncology, Mangalore Institute of Oncology, spoke on the unpredictable nature of Cancer and how one can cope up with this dreadful disease
 
• Brigadier I N Rai, Army Veteran, with his talk on “A soldier you don’t know” filled the audience with emotions of pride, joy and at the same time with sadness quoting the stories of the unsung heroes of India who sacrifice everything to the one thing – Motherland
• Mr. Ankith S Kumar, a Behavioural Scientist and Psycho-Social Counsellor at Sahyadri, motivated the audience to find happiness in small achievements of their everyday life and explained how emotions influence them and their surroundings
The attendees were given various takeaways & goodies as souvenirs of the event.
A special mention about Basavarajeshwari Ambi from 2nd Year Dept. of Information Science & Engineering and Srujan U from 2nd Year Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering who worked collaboratively since the last 7 months to procure the TEDx License to organize a TEDx event in the campus until they received a go-ahead from the approving authority at TEDx. The event was executed by these 2 coordinators along with their enthusiastic team of 30 volunteers.
2 LLP’s of Sahyadri among the 100 Start-ups declared as Winners by GOK at ELEVATE 2019 held in Bengaluru
The finals of Elevate 2019, India’s first comprehensive entrepreneurship platform of the Department of IT, BT and S&T, Govt. of Karnataka was held on 30th July’19. A total of 270 start-ups, which made it to the finals after multicity pitching in Mysore, Mangalore, Kalburgi, Belagavi and Bengaluru had an eight-minute round of pitching in the finals, vying for funding, mentorship and a chance to scale up their business ideas. Start-up finalists pitched to respective panels of jury members in IT/ITES, Medtech, Agri/Biotech, Cleantech, AVGC, ESDM, Kannada, Culture and tourism, AVGC Aerospace and Aviation. 100 winners out of 270 start-ups have been selected based on the recommendations of the grand jury and approved by the Elevate Steering Committee.

- Samarpan Sahyadri Tech LLP with Project named – “AGV/AMR LIDAR Navigation Kit”
- Utkarsh Sahyadri Tech LLP with Project named “ISENSE human activity measurement system integrated with sensor technology”
These projects were incubated at K-Tech NAIN Centre (New Age Incubation Network), Dept of IT & BT, Government of Karnataka.
In addition to these 2 Winning Projects, 3 other projects of Sahyadri emerged as Runners-Up:

Bhandary Foundation Recognized as Scientific and Industrial Research Organization by DST, Govt. Of India
Bhandary Foundation is recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Organization under Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India as Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) based on Industrial research programmes conducted in its constituents college Viz: Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru and all other developments in the Institution. Sahyadrian Recruited by Microsoft India (R&D) Pvt. Ltd. at a Salary Package of Rs. 10.00 Lakhs per annum
Ms. Pratheeksha S Karandoor from the 2019 passed out batch of Computer Science & Engineering was recruited by Microsoft for the position of Support Engineer with a package of Rs.10.00 Lakhs per annum. Pratheeksha had applied for the post of Support Engineer through the Microsoft job portal, post which she got an interview call at Microsoft Bengaluru. She had to undergo 3 rounds including Group Discussion followed by Technical & HR round before being offered the job role.

Sahyadrian Recruited by Ribbon Communications at a Salary Package of Rs. 6.4 Lakhs per annum
Ms. Neha C Poojari from the 2019 passed out batch of Department of Computer Science & Engineering was recruited by Ribbon Communications, Bengaluru for the role of a Software Developer with a package of Rs. 6.4 Lakh per annum. The interview was held on 8th July '19 in Bengaluru and the selection process was of 2 stages - Online Assessment (Aptitude + Programming) and Face to face interview.

Meeting of Governing Council was held at the campus
The Governing Council meeting of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management was held at the campus on Sunday, 21st July 2019. During the meeting various initiatives implemented for the progress and development of the college were discussed.
 
Apart from the Governing Council members of the college, the external members viz. Dr. K.N. Balasubramanya Murthy (Educationist), Vice Chancellor, PES University; Dr. M.V. Subramanian (entrepreneur), Managing Director, Future Focus Info Tech Pvt. Ltd.; and Dr. B. Sadashive Gowda –VTU nominee, were also present. Later on, Dr. K.N. Balasubramanya Murthy delivered a talk on “What a good University should do?” He shed light on various hindrances in the higher education and what can be done to overcome the same.
BOAT & DTE in collaboration with Sahyadri organize an Apprenticeship Fair
 
Board of Apprenticeship Training (SR), Chennai & Directorate of Technical Education, Bengaluru in collaboration with Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management organized an Apprenticeship Fair on 26th July 2019 for Engineering Graduates/Diploma/General Graduates at the Campus which saw the participation of around 400 students.

Our College E-Magazine - "Sahyadri Springs" was launched on July 5th’19 by the Principal - Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte and Academic Administrative Officer Ms. Shreelatha U A. During the launching ceremony, Principal addressed the gathering and encouraged the newly joined students to showcase their creative talents and abilities through the E-Magazine. Academic Administrative Officer Ms. Shreelatha U A in her speech recited a poem, which was published in ‘Sahyadri Springs’, expressing the beauty of the composition.

Jaro Group conducted a TPO’s Meet on 9th July’19 in Sahyadri Campus. Mr. Subramanian S, Senior Campus Ambassador-HR accompanied with Ms. Sakshi Pant interacted with the TPO’s of various colleges and explained about the placement prospects to them. He also stressed on the need for communication and marketing skills for getting a job offer at Jaro. The job profile, salary package, qualification details, opportunities for the professional growth in the company and other benefits were discussed. They have also come up with a lucrative compensation structure to their prospective employees.

Prof. Girish M and Prof. Sushma V from the Dept. of Business Administration-MBA were deputed for a Train the Trainers (T3) One-Week IBM workshop on Data Analytics during 22nd to 27th July’19 organized in collaboration with Mangalore University. The main objective of the workshop was to create a pool of Experts ready to take up Future Trainings on Data Analytics and also mentor the Mangalore University Incubation Centre (MUIC). The Workshop focussed on topics related to Business Intelligence Concepts, Knowledge of Dashboards, Reports & Metrics, Concepts of Big Data and its characteristics and also Hands-On Training on Tableau, a Data visualization tool.

Amazon Mega recruitment drive was conducted on 11th July '19 in Sahyadri Campus for the freshers & experienced candidates from Mangaluru. More than 180 candidates participated in the drive making it a successful recruitment for Amazon. The rounds conducted were Aptitude and online test. Mr. Murali Manoj R, Recruiter - HR was at the campus to facilitate the entire process. The final offers will be announced on 12th July'19.
New entrants to the Academic year 2019-20 attend Outbound Experiential Education Workshop at Ankola
 
A total of 105 new entrants attended a Five-Day Outbound Experiential Workshop “Understanding Me”, organized by Nature Bound Sahyadri at Ankola during 8th July to 12th July, 2019. The event was a part of the extended Bridge Course for the students. The workshop focused on experiential learning module to reveal the students strengths and shortfalls, how to overcome these deficits and focus on developing character suitable for accepting responsibility, develop concern, courage, and positive attitude.
It also sensitizes the participants to be goal oriented and teaches them the importance of resources. The students had a unique life changing experience. They were accompanied by Ms. Rashmitha Girish Nishal, Student Welfare Officer; Prof. Supreeth dfePrabhu, Dept. of Civil Engineering; Prof. Deepthi K M, Dept. of Mathematics and Prof. Adesh Padival, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering.
Parent Interaction of new entrants to the Engineering

Interaction session for the parents of new entrants to the engineering stream under CET Quota was held in the campus in two batches of 84 and 59 each. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman welcomed the parents and spoke on the concept of Acceptance.
The chairman emphasized that engineering involves learning skills. In-keeping with the AICTE norms, Sahyadri offers technical skills where the students are exposed to internship programs, latest technology, and industry activities, he said. He emphasised that the students are also offered a platform to compete in various national and international events.
Meanwhile, the chairman stressed on the responsibility of the parents towards their children and urged them to:
• Stimulate their children to utilize the facilities available in the campus and learn creative skills.
• Motivate your child
• To ignite in their children a spark of responsibility towards their family and the society.
• To share their own experiences of life with their child.
• To make their children self-dependent.
Speaking about the company expectations, Mr. Bhandary stated that the companies expect aptitude, attitude, good exposure, project based learning, interactive, communication and interactive skills from its employees.
Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, in his address, stressed that the maximum attendance required as per VTU norms is 75% and requested parents to monitor their child’s performance and attendance.
Faculty attended a Two-Week FDP organized by Global Academy of Technology, Bengaluru in association with IIIT-A
A team of faculty from Computer Science, Electronics & Communication and Information Science Engineering participated in a Two-Week Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on "Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning" organized by Global Academy of Technology, Bengaluru in association with Indian Institute of Information Technology-Allahabad during 1st July to 13th July, 2019.
This FDP helped to develop an in-depth understanding of the Expert System like Auto-Encoders, ML Algorithms, and Big-Data technologies like Hadoop and Spark to name a few. This would enable the faculty to offer larger AI & ML curriculum going forward. On all days, the second half of the day was dedicated for Hands-on problem-solving sessions, a big take away from the programme. Dr. Pushpalatha and Prof. Prashanth D from Computer Science & Engineering; Prof. Suchetha from Information Science & Engineering and Prof. Pradeep K from Electronics & Communication Engineering participated in this FDP. The resource persons were Top researchers in the AI and ML Domain from IIIT Allahabad - Dr. Rahul Kala; Dr Anupam; Dr Sonali Aggrawal; Dr K.P Singh and Dr. Shekar Varma.
Bridge Course for CET Batch of Engineering 2019
 
A Five-Day Bridge Course for the new entrants to Engineering batch 2019-20 through CET commenced on 15th July’19. Mr. Johnson Tellis, Director Sahyadri Edu Dreamers R&D Pvt Ltd interacted with the students and stressed on the importance of starting a conversation. His session focussed on Confidence building. Team based activity - Human Caterpillar was organized to make the students comfortable to communicate with each other and also to enhance their decision making abilities.
 
On the Day Two of Bridge Course, Team Building activity – “Tower Building” was conducted for students to understand the importance of team work. During the next session, an activity was conducted wherein the students highlighted their strengths and weaknesses in the form of a collage and presented it. This activity helps the students in self-evaluation and gives scope to plan on how they should overcome their weaknesses.
On 17th Jul’19, the Day Three of Bridge Course, students visited the in-house industries and launchpads of the institute and also interacted with the industry heads. They were introduced to various programmes and facilities available in the industries and launchpads that will help them in building their future projects.
On the fourth day of the Bridge Course – 18th July’19, Design thinking session was conducted post which the students had an activity of Wallet Making. The session and activity on Design Thinking was organized to understand people’s needs and come up with effective solution to meet those needs.
On the fifth day of Bridge course – 19th July’19, students had a Team activity wherein they had to do a Video Presentation covering their experiences at Sahyadri during the last 5 days. It was a joyous moment to witness the students involved in this assignment with great zeal
On the sixth & the last day of Bridge Course – 20th July’19, students presented their experience of the entire Bridge Course along in their respective Teams and also shared the Video that they created on the same theme.
Design Thinking session to curate Active Learning for first year Engineering students
 
With an intention to develop an active learning environment, the entire Teaching fraternity of first year engineering came together for creating an active learning curriculum.
During the four days - 16th to 19th July’2019, the Team underwent rigorous Design Thinking activity to map the learning outcomes of the Department to that prescribed by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The activity gave rise to creation of Assignments that are intriguing to Gen Z thereby creating a Calendar of Events in order to distribute the workload of the students effectively.
Session was organized under the guidance of Dr. Rajesha S, Dean-Academics and Heads of All Departments. The activities were facilitated by members of Dtlabz - Mr. Johnson Tellis and Mr. Gautham Nayak.
Two-Day Workshop for Faculty on NBA-OBE related Practices
 
A Two-Day Workshop on NBA–OBE Practices was organized as a part of the Induction Programme for the newly joined faculty to the Academic Year 2019 - 20 during 18th to 19th July 2019 in order to acquaint them with the processes involved in NBA accreditations. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal addressed the participants with regards to the importance of Accreditation. Dr. Rajesha S, Dean-Academics; Dr. Ravichandra, Dean–Industry Connect & Head of Dept. of Mechanical Engineering; Dr. Shamanth Rai, Head of Dept. of Information Science and Engineering; Prof. Rashmi Bhandary, Head of Placements; Dr. Rathishchandra Gatty, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering; Prof. Vasudev Rao P V, Dept. of Information Science and Engineering and Prof. Samarth Shenoy, Dept. of Business Administration facilitated the workshop covering topics such as Introduction to OBE Process, Preparation of Pre-Qualifier Report (PQR) and Self-Assessment Report (SAR), Course Objectives formation , CO-PO-PSO Mapping, Course File Preparation, Direct and Indirect tools, Rubrics, OBE attainment calculation in MS Excel and SIP/SPSS Projects. The sessions were followed by Hands-on practice and presentation by faculty members on CO formation and Mapping, Course File Preparation and Direct and Indirect tools usage for Odd Semester 2019-20. The workshop concluded with FAQ session and Feedback.

A Five-Day Short Term Course on “System Verilog & UVM” commenced on 23rd July 2019 for the final and pre final year students of Electronics and Communication Engineering.
Dr. Ashwath Rao, Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, gave an overview of the short term course and various job opportunities available in the field of VLSI design. Mr. Harish K.S. and Mr. Kedharnath V., Application Engineer - Entuple Technologies, Bengaluru, deliberated the sessions.

• Day 1 - 24th July 2019. Dr. Ashwath Rao, Head of the Department gave a brief overview of the department, verticals, thrust areas, NPTEL/MOOC courses and the mapping of various subjects to the thrust areas. He also gave an insight on how the Industry Connect Courses has been evolved and how they are mapped to future Skills. He emphasized the students to actively involve and take maximum benefit from the industry connect courses.
• Day 2 - 25th July 2019. Signal Processing and VLSI vertical was presented. Introduction started with concept of signal everywhere, importance of signal processing in various applications like communication, embedded system, etc., being explained. The Industry Connect Coordinator presented the objectives of the Industry Connect course. The industry connect coordinator presented the objectives of the Industry Connect course.
 
• Day 3 - 26th July 2019. Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, under the banner of IETE Student's Forum (ISF) conducted a one day workshop on "PCB : Design and Manufacture". The objective of the workshop was to help the second year students render better circuit designs for their projects and to help them explore the possibilities of PCB designing.
Sahyadri bids farewell to Shri Maheshathmananda Maharaj Swamiji of RIMSE, Mysore
 
A farewell function was organised on 24th July 2019 by Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education (RIMSE), Mysore for Shri Maheshathmananda Maharaj Swamji, who served as the Correspondent of RIMSE, Mysore. A 3-member team from Sahyadri visited RIMSE and felicitated him, wishing him success and happiness. Shri Maheshathmanandaji will be taking charge of Ramakrishna Math at Goa.
IBM Final Assessment - Campus connect
 
IBM conducted the final assessment for Core Java and Testing batch on 24th July 2019. A total of 94 students have taken up the assessment. The testing batch had Core Testing and the Up-skill Selenium Assessment. The Core Java batch had Core Java and Java Full Stack Pre-assessment.
SCII team visits Sahyadri
Mr Junichi Kamiyama Director and Mr. Alexander Varkey, CEO System Consultant Information India (P) Ltd, Tumkur a Japanese based company visited Sahyadri on 25th July 2019. After having visited various innovation centres and startups @ Sahyadri they have expressed their interest in collaborating with the college for various activities in the coming future.

Sahyadri – a Recognized Virtual Lab Nodal Centre
Sahyadri has been recognized as a Nodal Centre for conducting activities pertaining to Virtual Labs by NITK, Surathkal. Virtual Labs project is an initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India under the aegis of National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). This project is a consortium activity of twelve participating institutes (which includes many IITs and NITs) and IIT Delhi. IIT Delhi is the coordinating institute at the national level. NITK, Surathkal is one of the twelve participating institutes. The Virtual Labs project by MHRD highlights a paradigm shift in ICT based education. Virtual Labs do not require any additional infrastructural setup for conducting experiments at user premises. The simulation based experiments can be accessed remotely via internet. There will be no financial liability on any party for Virtual lab facility. It is free to use.
An expression of interest for setting up a Nodal Centre at Sahyadri was recently submitted and it was considered positively by NITK Virtual Labs centre. Departments like ECE, EE, CSE/IT, ME and Applied Sciences (Physical Sciences & Chemical Sciences) can now utilize the benefits of setting up this lab and they can contribute to Virtual Labs project by developing new experiments. Nodal centres can conduct regular workshops and demonstrate the Virtual Labs to the students and teachers of the colleges nearby. Virtual Labs platform helps students to understand the difficult concepts through conducting virtual experiments.
Second Session on Future Skills – AI/Big Data
With the intent to up-skill the teaching and non-teaching staff on the Future Skills, the second session for the staffs who are aligned to AI/Big Data Vertical was held on 20th Jul’19 and Prof. Prashanth Duddela, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering facilitated the session. These sessions are organized in order to acquaint the non-engineering staff on the Future Skills. Hence series of sessions are held in to lay a strong foundation on Future Skills and prepare for the Advanced courses planned in the near future.

Second session on Future Skill - Cyber Security
In an effort to up-skill Sahyadri with the Future Skills that are now the need of hour, weekly sessions are arranged for the teaching and non-teaching staff on main identified verticals and Cyber Security is one among them. On 6th July’19, the second session on Cyber Security was held. Prof. Naitik S T, Dept. of Information Science & Engineering facilitated this session which focussed on “Email Etiquette”. In his talk he gave insights on email spoofing and phishing. He also shared tips on Email Safety & Security. A total of 47 Teaching and Non-Teaching staffs were present during the session.
Second Session on Future Skills - AR/VR/MR and Social Mobile
Sahyadri Future Skills - AR/VR/MR and Social Mobile organized its second session on 27 July, 2019. The session was engraved on the topic “Exploring Augmented Reality through Mobile Applications”, with the intent of up-skilling the staffs of Sahyadri. Prof. Pooja N S, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering facilitated the session by illustrating the mobile application - “HP Reveal” and its features giving an insight on the concepts of Augmented Reality deployed in it. The session was then followed by a group discussion on “Augmented Reality”. A total of 4 groups were framed and the groups were assigned to deliver a talk as a yield of their discussion.
Induction program is organized for newly joined faculty
Department of Computer Science & Engineering organized an Induction Program on 2nd July 2019 for transition of the newly joined faculty into the teaching profession. Prof. J.V. Gorabal, Head of the Department welcomed the newly joined faculty to the Sahyadri family. He briefed them on the best practices at Sahyadri and explained them about guidelines on teaching methodology and how to become an excellent teacher.
Prof. Gorabal shared his experience as a teacher with all newly joined faculties and motivated them to become passionate towards teaching and research.
Faculty Team visits Pratian Technologies
On 2 July, 2019 the faculty team comprising of Dr. Pushpalatha and Mr. Harisha from the Department of Computer Science Engineering, Mr. Prakhyath Rai and Mrs. Suchetha G. from the Department of Information Science Engineering and Dr. Anush Bekal, Mr. Pradeep and Mr. Praveen Kumar from the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering visited Pratian Technologies Bengaluru and had an interaction with Mr. Anuj Sharma, Chairman, World Research Centre. The interaction was intended to meet the gap between industry and students.
Mr. Anuj Sharma stressed on the importance of students getting involved in solving real time industry problems and in turn getting absorbed by the respective companies. He also stressed on the importance of faculty getting updated with industry standards and latest trends and technologies adopted by industries.
Thin Film Research Lab starts functioning at Sahyadri
Thin Film Research Lab that has been established from the State Grant received from VGST with due support from the Management, started functioning in the Department of Engineering Physics with effect from July 4th’19. The Programme coordinator - Dr. Navin N Bappalige has given the demonstration of the functioning of this unit to Dr. Manjappa S, Director R&D; Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal and to the HOD’s of all departments. VGST has sanctioned Rs. 5.00 Lakhs under its RFTT scheme in the year 2017-18 to the Programme coordinator to establish Thin Film Research Lab using Spin Coater. From the fund received, along with the Spin Coater, the characterization units like Hall Probes, Thin film Electrical characterization unit, high resolution microscope with camera, hydrothermal autoclave to produce nano powder, Ph meter, IR based thermometer, furnace and other basic equipment have also been set up. Researchers across departments can now utilize the facilities available in the Thin Film Research Lab.

Ms. Gowri Ganesh from the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2019 batch was recruited by Bosch Limited for the position of Graduate Apprentice with a package of Rs.4.00 Lakh per Annum. The final interview was held on 5th July 2019, in Bengaluru.
Ms. Gowri Ganesh has also represented VTU south zone national in volleyball in the year 2017 & 2018, Handball in the year 2019. She has also been a part of the inter zonal Volleyball, Throwball, Handball, and Athletics.

TCS company-specific Training for Final Year Students

Faculty selected to pursue PhD at Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvanthapuram
Prof. Nisha from the Dept. of Electronics & Communication Engineering has been selected to pursue PhD under AICTE-INAE Teachers Research Fellowship Scheme at Department of Avionics, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvanthapuram.
Engineering Teachers of AICTE approved institutions can apply for AICTE-INAE Teachers Research Fellowship Scheme for pursuing PhD in Government Research Labs. On applying, Nisha had to go through a Written Test and also an Interview round. She is the only candidate to be selected under this scheme in IIST in the whole of India making Sahyadri proud.
Nisha is working with Sahyadri for the last 3 years and is also an Alumna of our institute. Her research area for PhD is "Microelectronics, Transducers & Actuators, Microelectromechanical System (MEMS), Electromangetics, and Communication Systems".
Caliper bags 1st order from Defence
Caliper which has already been approved by Defence, bagged the first order for a component, which goes into “Automatic Pistols” used by our Armed Forces. This is an import substitution product and in the bidding process. Caliper thwarted competition technically and becomes single supplier of this component.
Caliper undertakes Reverse engineering project
Caliper was invited by Nuclear Power Corporation @ Kudankulam Plant for conducting reverse engineering study of pressure vessel studs and nuts. Mr. Vignesh & Mr. Abhishek from Caliper visited the nuclear plant and collected technical information for further carrying out reverse engineering @ Caliper.
