Inauguration of the Two-Day workshop on “Air Pollution and its Impact on Climate Change” On account of World Environment Day 2019, observing the theme - Beat Air Pollution, a Two-Day workshop is organized by the Dept. of Civil Engineering in association with Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) during 28th to 29th June’19.

Inauguration of the Two-Day workshop on “Air Pollution and its Impact on Climate Change” During the Inaugural ceremony, Dr. S Manjappa, Director-Research spoke about the World Environment Day and its history. The workshop as inaugurated by Sri. Kadlur Sathyanarayana Acharya, Principal District & Session Judge & Chairman, DLSA, Dakshina Kannada. In his address, he spoke about the various hazardous aspects affecting the environment and the role of every individual in mitigating the issues related to deterioration of environment.

Dr. R Lakshminarayan, Member, Karnataka Public Service Commission, Bengaluru, the Theme speaker of the inaugural ceremony briefed the audience regarding the implementation of Air Pollution Act through judicial bodies, importance of renewable energy, reasons of urban and rural air pollution and citizen civic sense that should exist amongst the fellow citizens to mitigate air pollution.

Sri. Rajashekar Puranik, Environmental Officer, KSPCB, Mangaluru, highlighted the various industries causing air pollution, common air pollutants and how they are dealt with. He also spoke about the various acts implemented by legislation and exercised by KSPCB.

Post inaugural ceremony, the first Technical Session was facilitated by Dr. H. Lakshmikanth, Environmental Officer, KSPCB, Udupi on the topic –“Air Pollution”. He shared various case studies concerning Air Pollution which was dealt by KSPCB, Udupi.

The second Technical Session was facilitated by Dr. Manippady Krishna Kumar, Chief Scientist, Champs Industrial Pte. Ltd, Singapore on “Indoor Air pollution and various new technologies developed to counter the same”.

The third Technical Session was facilitated by Dr. Srihari, Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, NITK Surathkal. He spoke about various sources of Air Pollution, major Environmental Acts/Rules/Policies in India, Air Quality Index, future trends in ambient air pollution and some of the recent innovations to tackle air pollution.

The fourth session was by Dr. Raj Mohan B, Professor, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, NITK Surathkal. He spoke about the impact of air pollution and its overall impact on climatic changes. He also touched upon the various precautions taken to save our environment and role of each stakeholder to normalize the environmental imbalance.

This workshop was sponsored by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Mangaluru and was framed under the guidance of Dr. S. Manjappa, Director-Research.

The first session of Say Two was facilitated by by Dr. G. Shrinikethan, Professor, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, NITK, Surathkal on ‘Sustainable Development.’ Highlights of the session were - Social & Economical constraints influencing sustainable development, flue gas desulphurization, dual alkali systems, selective catalytic reduction process, staged combustion, ship emission reduction strategies and so on. The second session was delivered by Mr. U. Venkatachala Aithal, Chief General Manager, MRPL, Mangaluru on ‘Case Study – Air Pollution Control at MRPL.’ Through this session, Mr. Aithal spoke about various stipulations and mitigation strategies implemented at MRPL, Mangaluru for the control of air pollution.

An industrial visit to Udupi Power Corporation Ltd, Padubidri was organized as a part of the workshop in which the participants had an opportunity to view the various air pollution mitigation strategies implemented.

The programme began with a formal welcome by Mrs. Shreelatha U.A., Academic Administrative Officer and NSS Programme Co-ordinator. Mrs Akshaya Shetty, Asst. Professor, Department of Humanities lead the participants in the Yogic mantras.

Dr R Srinivas Roa Kunte, Principal addressed the gathering and gave his best wishes to the participants. The practical session was conducted by Dr. Sowmya Neelesh Kotiyan and Dr. Vidya Shetty, Medical Officer, Sharada Ayurveda Medical College & Hospital Sharada Yoga, Naturopathy College, Hospital & Research Centre. 140 students and 40 faculty participated in the event. Mr. Ankith S. Kumar, Student Counsellor facilitated the programme.

Bridge Course for Engineering students– 2019  Bridge Course for Engineering students– 2019  A Twelve-Day Bridge Course for the new entrants to Engineering Batch 2019 has commenced in the campus. On the Day One, Mr. Johnson Tellis, Director, Sahyadri Edu DREAMERS R&D Pvt. Ltd. interacted with the students and stressed the importance of starting a conversation. The session included team building activities to enhance communication and decision making capabilities. Students were also encouraged to ask questions during the questioning hour which fosters critical thinking concepts such as analyzing, reasoning, decision making, evaluating and problem solving.

During the Day Two of the Bridge Course, students were merged with the Batch 1 to view the presentation of their team’s robot in the Bridge Course Mega Event Challenge and have few takeaways to help them enhance their learning.

During the Day Three, students had a session on Design Thinking. They were guided in defining the problem statement and also use ideation technique to come up with solutions to the problem. Students were assigned with a task of designing an ideal wallet for the user. They learnt to analyse the problem and showcase it with their innovative ideas by preparing a prototype using paper prototyping technique and finally shared the ideas with the end users for feedback on the design.

During the Day Four, students were introduced to computer aided design software Onshape. This software enables students to design the robots for their final mega event. The students learnt the basics of sketching and part modelling features of the software. Further, they will create the design of the robot chassis based on the requirements of the problem statement.

Sahyadri hosts a Seven-Day FDP on “Student Induction” for the faculty of AICTE approved institutions Sahyadri hosts a Seven-Day FDP on “Student Induction” for the faculty of AICTE approved institutions A Seven-Day Faculty Development Programme (Residential) on “Student Induction” for the faculty of AICTE approved institution during 18th to 24th June’19 was inaugurated by Mr. Ashok Kumar Gopala, Former IT Professional, Organic Farmer as well as facilitator for Jeevan Vidya Workshops. The workshop is organized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to equip the teaching faculty to conduct the mandatory induction programme on Human Values based on Jeevan Vidya module. More than 70 faculty members from all over the country underwent this seven-day residential workshop on Human values in our campus.

The workshop began with a formal inaugural presided by Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal. Prof. Ravichandhra, Dean–Industry Connect & Head of Mechanical Engineering Department welcomed the gathering. Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal addressed the faculty too. Ms. Shreelatha U A, Academic Administrative Officer and Co-Coordinator of the workshop facilitated the formal inaugural programme.

During the valedictory ceremony, the attendees’ viz. faculty members from various colleges in and around Mangaluru, expressed that they were impressed as the content of the sessions delivered was exactly what they needed to hear and learn. A couple of faculty members came on stage and shared their feedback. Finally, they thanked Sahyadri and lauded AICTE for organizing the FDP.

Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal thanked the participants and said that now it is their turn to carry what they have learnt and impart it to the students. The need of Universal Human Values is to be reconsidered in the way technical education is being imparted in the technical institutions. AICTE has initiated this programme with a view to inculcate human values, knowing that technical knowledge coupled with human values will make the present day students better citizens of tomorrow.

Two-Day PGCET Training, a Community Initiative at Sahyadri The inaugural ceremony of Two-Day PGCET Training Programme organized by the Dept. of Business Administration-MBA was held in the campus. Over 200 students from various places like Bengaluru, Thirthahalli, Shimoga, Kasaragod, Kumta, Kundapura, Udupi, Bhatkal and Mangaluru aspiring to pursue MBA under Government quota in Top B-Schools of Karnataka participated in the programme.

Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA welcomed the gathering and said that this ‘Community Initiative’ of Sahyadri is conducted to create awareness about the government quota in the B-Schools and also to provide training to the graduates so that they could join their dream institute to pursue their MBA degree. Prof. Sushma V, Chief Coordinator of the programme briefed the audience about the relevance of organizing this event. She introduced the in-house facilitators and external trainers to the audience. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, in his Presidential address, appreciated the students for the genuineness with which they are preparing for the entrance exam. He also said that the rank that they get in the PGCET exam is secondary but priority is choosing their “Dream College” to pursue MBA during Option Entry.

The afternoon session on ‘Logical Reasoning & Intelligence’ was facilitated by Mr. Vivekananda Kamath, Director-VReach Coaching Academy, Udupi and the Principal of Brainsoft Academy, Brahmavar.

This programme concluded with a Valedictory Ceremony in the presence of Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary. Mr. Bhandary while addressing the participants urged them to evaluate themselves thoroughly so as to get a clear picture about their career. He told the students not to consider MBA as an extended degree but a unique course which is based on skills of individuals. He urged them to utilize this opportunity to build network with other participants and see that their goals for future are fixed much before they join the MBA course. They should work on their choice of specialization and have a skill check before joining any stream. Finally, he wished them good luck and asked them to evaluate the options available to do MBA and also make a comparative study, before they choose their dream destination to do MBA course.

The next session was on ‘General Knowledge’ facilitated by Prof. Guruprasad Rao, Dean-Branding & Promotion.

Participants also wrote a Mock Test covering all 4 areas in the syllabus of PGCET. Students were then evaluated and ranked. Top scorers in the Mock test were appreciated and awarded. It was encouraging to see participants volunteer to share their opinion about the PGCET Training Programme. The USP of the programme was the “PGCET Practice Book” exclusively designed under the leadership of Prof. Raghavendra Prabhu which was presented to the PGCET Training participants.

Orientation session for the Parents of New Entrants to Engineering Batch 2019 Interaction session with the parents of new entrants in to the engineering stream was held in the campus 3 different batches. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman extended a warm welcome to the parents. He explained that engineering is a process of learning and advised the parents to encourage their children to constantly upgrade their skills. He said students are exposed to learning through projects & aptitude classes, start-ups & entrepreneurship. They are also offered a platform to compete in various national and international events. In order to establish social/emotional connect; the students are exposed to societal issues. The chairman further explained about the facilities and infrastructure available and also the various initiatives undertaken, stating that Sahyadri works round-the-clock and strives to give the best for its students. Engineering is not just about earning a degree it is a lifestyle he said. The chairman called upon the parents to share with their children, the hardships which they have encountered. This will definitely help their children to shoulder responsibility and take up a job in the long run. He suggested that parents avail loan facility, in order to make their child financially responsible. He re-iterated the importance of dress code for students.

Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, in his address requested parents to be in touch with the college regularly and encouraged parents to utilize the facilities provided by the institution to improve their child’s skills.

Dr. Ananth Prabhu, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering; Mr. Sacheth Suvarna, Chief Nodal Officer, CET Helpline, Mangaluru Centre; and Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, were the resource persons.

Dr. Ananth Prabhu spoke about Future Skills and Engineering. He explained about the different branches of studies and their scope of employment. He added that what one learns today may become outdated after a certain period of time. Hence one has to constantly upgrade and update one’s skills. The next session of the Day was on KEA and Government Seat allotment facilitated by Mr. Sacheth Suvarna – Chief Nodal Officer, CET Helpline Centre. He spoke about eligibility and also about basic details like caste reservation, income/caste certificates and the criteria for minorities and SC/ST students. He placed great emphasis on Option Entry.

The session was concluded with a question and answer round where students and parents alike came up with several queries and all the queries were correctly addressed.

Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal took up the last session on Option Entry. While Mr. Suvarna covered most of the topic, Principal threw some light on Option Entry choices. He explained about college-wise, branch-wise and course-wise entries. He also explained about the fee structure. AI & Big Data Mr. Pradeep Kumar C facilitated the first session for the Future Skills Vertical on “AI & Big Data”. A total of 60 members including Teaching & Non-Teaching staff of Sahyadri participated in the session.

Pradeep is a B.E in Electronics & Communication and has also done his M.Tech. His AI journey started since the year 1993. His specialization includes Packet processing in Networks, Carrier Grade product design, IoT and Machine Learning.

The session witnessed the participation of Teaching & Non-Teaching staff of Sahyadri.

Mr. Sachin Ganesh, Co-Founder and Director, Dreamsoft Innovations Private Limited facilitated this interactive session. The session was then taken forward by Prof. Prakhyath Rai who gave an insight on Social Mobile by illustrating the needs of mobile applications in the market and also briefed on the various categories of mobile application platforms and the programming languages used for its development.

Dr. Yail Jimmy Kim, P.Eng., F.ACI, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Colorado Denver, USA and Dr. John W. Van de Lindt, Ph.D., F. ASCE, F. SEI Harold H. Short Endowed Chair Professor Co-Director, Center for Risk-Based Community Resilience Planning Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, for collaborative studies in two thrust areas of Civil Engineering.

Dr. Shenoy had discussions with Dr. Yail Jimmy Kim, who is actively involved in the research related to Composite Materials and Smart Structures, on the possibility of academic association in the research work being carried out in the Civil Engineering Department of Sahyadri in the similar field.

At the Sahyadri Research Centre Mr. Sunil Kumar, Mr. Shishirkrishna and Mrs. Deepthishree Aithal are carrying out their research work in laminated composite panels and corrugated sheets. Dr. Kim looks forward to possible collaborative opportunities with Sahyadri.

In another meeting with Dr. John W. Van de Lindt, Dr. Shenoy exchanged his views on Sensors, Instrumentation and Similitude studies on the behaviour of structures during earthquakes. This is the field of research taken up by Mrs. Smitha, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering. Dr. John also has expressed his keen interest in associating with Sahyadri.

IBM has come up with a new proposal this year regarding its training period for Fresher’s i.e., IBM Campus Connect. IBM Campus Connect trains the fresher’s in their respective colleges for a period of time depending on the course they are to be trained. A total of 75 students have been attending the training session. They are divided into three technical courses - Core Java, C# and Software Testing. The training will be followed by an assessment.

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering receives RGS-F fund for Ocean Wave-energy research

Dr. Rathishchandra. R. Gatti, Professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been selected by Vision group of Science & Technology, Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka to receive the 5 lakhs worth RGS-F grant (Research Grant for Scientist-Faculty) for the project titled "Design and Development of a Novel Point Absorber Type Wave Energy Generator for MicrGrids and Desalination for agricultural purposes".

The objective of the proposed project is to design, fabricate and test a novel point absorber type wave energy generator for micro-grids and desalination. The wave energy potential along the coastal lines of peninsular region of India is approximately 171 GW. There are two visions to develop this novel wave energy converter in this project: (i) To bring grid stability by having Wave energy based micro-grid setups (50-100 MW private and public power plants) at the coastal regions so that the landlocked regions of India can rely on other power resources (ii) another objective is to build high pressure water and feed it to Sea Water Reverse Osmosis plants which in turn can cater to coastal drinking water and agricultural water supplies. This will reduce the agriculture dependence on fresh water or ground water resources.

Valedictory of AICTE sponsored 7-Day FDP on Student Induction Nippon Audiotronix Pvt Ltd conducted an online test for the Mechanical and Electronics & Communication Engineering students of 2019 outgoing batch. A total of 45 students from various colleges in Mangalore participated in the test and the results are awaited.

Nippon Audiotronix Pvt. Ltd. is the market leader for In-car infotainment systems and has been excelling as an OE (Original Equipment) supplier by providing state of the art technology and superior quality of car accessories for well over two decades. The company had its humble beginnings with its setup in 1987. By 1994, the Nippon Audiotronix Pvt Ltd. entered into a technical license agreement with Kenwood Corporation, Japan for the assembling and sale of Kenwood systems in India.

Caliper designed & developed own product - “Floating Ball Valves”

Caliper designed & developed own product Caliper for the first time designed & developed their own product - “Floating Ball Valves”. These valves are fully fabricated using Robotic Welding, which are less weight, cost effective & quick deliverable using bars & pipes, instead of castings or forgings being used by other manufacturers. These uniquely designed, developed & manufactured products are going to be used in Nuclear Power Plant. Another 12 products are designed by Caliper and are in various stages of development / manufacturing.

Mr. Sanketh, Research Expert of Anandrathi Share & Stock Brokers Ltd from Mumbai conducted One-to-One sessions with the Principal, Deans, Heads of all Departments and Chief Executive Officers of the in-house industries. In addition to this, a session was also facilitated two different slots to cover the Teaching and Non-Teaching fraternity of Sahyadri.

Second session of IoT Future Skill Group The second session of IoT Future Skill Group was held on 29th June’19 at RDL IoT lab. Mr. Pradeep Kumar gave insights on future trends and industrial applications of IoT. Mr. Raghavendra Shetty, CEO, RDL Technologies Pvt Ltd took a session on things tagged to the internet. He also showed the demo and working of health monitoring system was given.

Future Skill Group on “Cyber Security” conducted its first session Sahyadri Cyber Security Future Skill group successfully conducted its first session on the topic “Introduction to Cyber Security” for teaching, non-teaching and supporting staff. Dr. Anush Bekal briefed about activities of the future skill group, reasons behind forming the group and roles and responsibilities of the members. Prof. Harisha, Coordinator gave an insight on the Cyber Security Vertical and various Technical Areas covered under the group. Prof. Naithik S T, Coordinator delivered a talk on Cyber Crime, Safe Cyber space and practices essential for setting up Secure Digital Eco-System.

Introductory session for the Future Skills “3D Printing and Robotics”

Bridge Course for the Engineering Batch 2019 Professor Ravichandra K. Rangappa, Dean-Industry and HoD, Mechanical Department facilitated the first session for the Future Skills Sahyadri 3D Printing and Robotics. He spoke on the topic "What is in the 3D Printing". He briefed about the process involved in 3D printing and gave deep insight into the 3D printing area. Dr. Anush Bekal briefed about the importance of future skills and roles and responsibility of members of Future Skill group.

MBA Alumna interacts with the first year students

MBA Alumna interacts with the first year students Ms. Pooja Rai (Batch 2013-15), Senior HR Executive at LG Soft India, Bengaluru interacted with the 1st year MBA students and shared about her journey at Sahyadri. She is one among the two students who were placed as HR’s during the Campus Recruitment at Sahyadri for LG Soft India.

Pooja expressed how delighted she is following Sahyadri MBA Page on Social Media and seeing Sahyadri achieve Milestones year after year. She says Sahyadri has evolved as a temple of education. By meeting her faculty and interacting with them and also addressing the students, her regards for the institute has doubled as she appreciated the inquisitiveness in faculty and students to bridge the Academia-Industry gap if any.

Seed Ball Preparation, an event organized by Dept. of Information Science & Engineering An event on "Seed Ball Preparation” was organized by the Dept. of Information Science & Engineering in association with STAISE. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Shamanth Rai, Head of Dept. of Information Science & Engineering. While addressing the gathering he elaborated on the importance of afforestation and motivated the participants to grow more number of tress in the surrounding areas. Faculty and students of the department participated in the event. Seeds of variety of trees have been collected and more than 500 seed balls were prepared.

Nishan B of Computer Science & Engineering gets his Internship approved at Sophos Group PLC with stipend. Sophos Group PLC is a British security software and hardware company. Sophos develops products for communication endpoint, encryption, network security, email security, mobile security and unified threat management. Sophos is primarily focused on providing security software to the mid-market and pragmatic enterprise from 100- to 5,000-seat organizations.

Nishan B will be working work closely with the NSG-Network Security Group.

The Hague India Cyber Security Summer School Programme

The Hague India Cyber Security Summer School Programme Srinath K S and Naveen Kumar B from Aptra technologies Pvt. Ltd. attended “The Hague India Cyber Security Summer School” organised by Centre of Excellence - Cyber Security, Government of Karnataka (KSCST) in collaboration with M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bengaluru. They had fruitful interaction with Mr. H. Hemanth Kumar, Executive Secretary, Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology and Dr. Y Narahari, Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Automation, IISC, Bangalore.

This Six-Day Summer School Programme allowed to gain deeper knowledge and understanding of cyber security concepts and latest developments, cutting edge cyber security technologies such as cyber Forensics, Diplomacy and policy, cyber strategic capability development and ethics. It also involved rectifying the problem statements and provided solutions for Challenge on Drone Security Policy India assessed with DigitalSky ltd.

First Aid Demonstration and Health Care awareness session held for the Teaching and Non-teaching staff A demonstration and awareness session on First Aid was conducted for the teaching and Non-teaching staff by Mr. Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor in order to prepare the team to respond to any emergency situation and also provide information about the various health care facilities. The sessions were conducted department-wise covering Computer Science and Engineering, Placement Department, Academic Department, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Business Administration-MBA in the first phase of the programme.
