Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt - SSTH 2018

Dr. Karisidappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) The Grand Finale of SSTH 2018 was inaugurated very differently by Dr. Karisidappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) initially by opening the ribbon, then Lighting the Lamp with other dignitaries and also by coding in one of the SSTH Projects named – “Mini CNC” (Computer Numerical Control) developed by the 1st PUC students of Govinda Dasa College, Surathkal which printed a copy saying - “SSTH 2K18 OPEN”.

Mr. Johnson Tellis, Project Co-ordinator gave a brief about SSTH, an annual event. He said it is a community initiative of Sahyadri and aims at imparting scientific knowledge in budding young enthusiasts. He mentioned that more than 100 colleges were reached out to, covering 15,000 students finally resulting in funding 300 projects of 1,500 students on the Grand Finale day. He said - during the course of SSTH event, the team has nurtured more than 100 scientific ideas.

Dr. Karisidappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) Chief Guest - Dr. Karisiddappa, during his inaugural address, expressed his delight to be at Sahyadri where students of rural areas who are deprived of opportunities are given a forum with mentors from institute and industries. He said it is for the very first time in his 35 years of teaching career that he has participated in an event like this. He added that all scientific ideas come from the nature. Nature speaks to us and we should understand the nature’s language. If we understand this, we become globally renowned professionals. He urged the students to convert the projects to something which is beneficial to the society. He concluded his speech by re-iterating that the country will no longer be recognised for the wealth it has but only for the knowledge it possesses. Going forward, Knowledge Economy will be the talk of the town. The nation needs scientifically thinking students and Sahyadri is doing a great job in igniting the enthusiasm in the budding talents.

The in-house dignitaries - Dr. D L Prabhakara, Director–Sahyadri Group; Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman-Bhandary Foundation; Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director-R&D; Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal; Deans; Trustees and HODs of all departments were present during the inaugural and the Valedictory ceremony.

Later, a Panel Discussion was organized to throw light on the topic – “How students can leverage the Digital Resources available to them”. Mr. Siddharth Rajhans, Mr. Pranav Hebbar, Mr. Ved Prakash were the Panellists and Mr. Aakarsh Naidu was the Moderator of the Panel Discussion.

Highlights of the Discussion were as follows:
• LinkedIn, Facebook, Whatsapp and so on are the gateways to Digital future and students should utilize them effectively
• It is imperative to do Self Evaluation on Passion Vs Fascination
• Students should be encouraged to chase their passion where their competency lays
• Further reading on “Nidhi Mayurika – At 15, This Brilliant Bengaluru Girl has won a NASA Contest Thrice”. Nidhi went through the sites of various academic institutions and enrolled into courses on AstroBiology
• Digital Education is just like Democracy – Democratize your learning and every student has an opportunity to discover what you want to learn
• Language is not a barrier to learn and to build the nation

Valedictory Ceremony of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt - SSTH 2018
Dr. Karisidappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) During the Valedictory ceremony, Dr. Karisidappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) addressed the students and encouraged them by sharing an anecdote which hinted that - it is the stuff and basic intelligence with experience that matters and not the outer look of anything that takes people to greater heights. He referred to Sahyadri as a “Scientific Community” and made the students realise how fortunate they were to enter the Engineering College without having the basic academic qualification for engineering yet.

Dr. K T V Reddy, President of IETE, New Delhi while addressing the audience said – There is no replacement to hard work and NO shortcuts to be used. He also stimulated the students to do what their heart says and follow their passion.

Dr. S Seetharamu, a leading Scientist in Central Power Research Institute while speaking referred to the renowned literary works - “Mankuthimmana Kagga” and encouraged students by saying - One must learn a lot from the world around him and live life doing good deeds.

Mr. C Nagaraj, who worked in fortune 500 companies like HP, Toyota, Shimano, Sony addressed the students and stimulated them to analyze whether they should work hard or work smart when an assignment is given to them. He also emphasised on the use of 80-20 Theory through which the success is the highest.

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary while speaking to the students said that SSTH was started 5 years ago intending to create technical awareness and over the years Sahyadri has made amendments to the SSTH format. Now, at SSTH, Sahyadri funds the identified project with the help of NAIN and Govt. Of Karnataka and the current prototype would be converted to Product and then Scale Up and Start Up. He has expressed his whole hearted support in not restricting these opportunities to Sahyadri alone but to all students who have talent.

“Be with Engineers”, a Two-Day pre-event of SSTH for Mentoring Projects

Outbound Training for MBAs in SakleshpurOutbound Training for MBAs in Sakleshpur As a part of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt - SSTH 2018 which will be held on 10th Nov’18, “Be with Engineers” a Two-Day pre-event was held at Sahyadri. This programme intended to mentor 60 Best Project Teams by industries and give them hands-on training with Machines to improve their ideas. A total of 260 students participated from all over from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts. Mr. Johnson Tellis interacted with the young budding talents. This programme was organized with the objective to make the dreams of young talents amplified.

MBA Alumni visit the campus for SSTH 2018

MBA Alumni visit the campus for SSTH 2018 A total of 14 MBA students of batch 2015-17 visited Sahyadri during SSTH 2018. The alumni witnessed the projects exhibited by students of various institutions. They also addressed the 1st year and 2nd year MBAs on the roles and responsibilities they are handling currently in their respective job roles. The alumni also shared the various challenges they face in their corporate life and how the training imparted, projects undertaken during their MBA course helped them in shaping their career. These students are working with organisations like KPMG, EY, Thomson Reuters and Northern Trust.

P. Poonia, Vice-Chairman; All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), at its Headquarters in New Delhi.

Sahyadri gets accreditation from The Institution of Engineers The Institution of Engineers (India) IEI, a statutory body to promote and advance the engineering and technology has accredited all engineering programs i.e., Civil Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Information Science & Engineering offered at Sahyadri.
This accreditation will enable our students to become corporate members of IEI at the completion of their programs.

NITK and RDL Research collaboration - Joint IoT and Data Analytics Lab at NITK

NITK and RDL Research collaboration - Joint IoT and Data Analytics Lab at NITK NITK Surathkal and RDL Technologies have signed a Letter of Intend to establish IoT and Data Analytics Lab at NITK Campus. This lab is expected to accelerate conversion of Use cases to Solutions, products, patents and research papers. The lab will focus on innovations, solutions for Manufacturing, Healthcare, Environment, Social Retail and defence sector.

Going forward most of the problems and solutions are anticipated to be interdisciplinary, in view of this, discussions are on to involve additional departments. We thank Dr. Geetha V, Dr. Sowmya Kamath S and Dr. G. Ram Mohana Reddy from Department of Information Technology, NITK Surathkal and Mr. Raghavendra G Shetty, Sandeep Patil and Pradeep Kumar C from RDL Technologies for taking initiative and nurturing this relationship.

Mr. M V Rajeev Gowda, Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha interacts with the MBAs

MRPL - SAHYADRI Inter-Professional-Collegiate Debate Competition 2018 in Sahyadri CampusMRPL - SAHYADRI Inter-Professional-Collegiate Debate Competition 2018 in Sahyadri Campus Mr. M V Rajeev Gowda is an Indian politician and academician. He holds a Ph.D from Wharton Business School, USA. He is a member of parliament in the Rajya Sabha since July 2014 and a national spokesperson for the Indian National Congress. He currently serves as Chairman of the "CONGRESS RESEARCH DEPARTMENT". He was Professor of Economics and Social Sciences and the Chairperson of the Centre for Public Policy at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore and taught a range of courses. He served as the Director of the Central Board, Reserve Bank of India.

Mr. Rajeev visited Sahyadri and interacted with the MBA students on “Indian Economy”. He walked the students through a graphical presentation on the Historic perspective of World GDP and also the place that India holds in GDP. He stressed on how India’s wealth was exploited in the past and other countries moved ahead due to industrialization. Under British rule our economy shrunk since they did not promote industrialization. He appreciated the words of Sir M Visvesvaraya which emphasised on “Industrialize or Perish”. Looking at the current statistics on GDP in India, he expressed his happiness in forecasting that India will be the third largest economy by 2040 and also said that India will be the fifth largest consumer market by 2025. He added – While rest of the world is ageing, India has a huge young population.

Students were encouraged to ask questions not only on matters related to Indian Economy but on anything that they wanted heads-up on. It was a great opportunity for the students to be directly interacting with such an eminent personality with vast experience in almost all spheres that contribute to the nation’s growth.

Siddharth Rajhans Siddharth Rajhans First year MBAs had an opportunity to hear an inspiring talk by Mr. Siddharth Rajhans, Founder & Director of Spacify Inc, a Harvard educated first generation technology entrepreneur, a Silicon Valley Technocrat, Management Researcher, TEDx and motivational speaker and Pioneer of the Outernet Technology in India and the Asia Pacific Region. He spoke on the importance of Entrepreneurship & Intrapreneurship. He shared his real life experience to bring out the essence of analyzing both financial & technical viability. He also threw light on Resume building and encouraged students to take up various certification courses which will add value to their resume. He shared the significance of Data Analytics in today's scenario and how an individual can pursue a career in it. He stressed on start-up which gives experiential learning which is more concrete than theory.

In his session for MBA, he shared the processes and initiatives that are practised by corporate companies as well as his own experience as CKO in setting up KM systems in three global companies. He addressed the faculty on Skilling students for the Digital world.

Mr. Ved Prakash is currently CKO at Trianz, a global professional services firm helping Fortune 1000 organizations transition to a digital enterprise by leveraging on Cloud, Analytics, Digitalization & Security. Earlier, he was CKO with CGI Global, a Montreal headquartered global IT services and consulting firm. Prior to CGI, Mr. Ved Prakash was with Wipro for twenty years where he was the CKO in the last six years. Mr. Ved Prakash conducts KM Strategy and Visioning workshops for CXOs across the globe. He is a member of KM Advisory Committee at National e-Governance Division, core member of CII National Committee on KM and Business Transformation, and a member of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) National Committee on framing KM standards. He is a mentor to startups at NSRCEL, the entrepreneurship cell of IIM Bangalore. Ved has been recognized with Global KM Leadership Award in 2018, Most Impactful KM Professional in 2016, Most Influential KM Professional in 2015, and KM Leadership Award in 2014.

Ved holds an MBA from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, and a Bachelors of Technology with Honours in Computer Engineering from Pantnagar University where he was a Gold Medalist.

Inauguration of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers  Inauguration of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers Student’s Forum (ISF) and Professional Activities Centre (PAC) was inaugurated by Dr. K T V Reddy, IETE President New Delhi in the presence of Dr. M H Kori, IETE Distinguished Fellow and Former Technical Director Alcatel Lucent Technologies and Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal at Sahyadri. IETE is India's leading recognized professional society devoted to the advancement of Science and Technology of Electronics, Telecommunication & IT with motive of reach to un-reach. The IETE is the National Apex Professional body of Electronics and Telecommunication, Computer Science and IT Professionals. Government of India has recognised IETE as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) and also notified as an educational Institution of national eminence. The objectives of IETE focus on advancing electro-technology. The IETE conducts and sponsors technical meetings, conferences, symposia, and exhibitions all over India, publishes technical journals and provides continuing education as well as career advancement opportunities to its members.

Faculty of Department of Electronics and Communication have enrolled themselves as corporate members of IETE and around 123 students have enrolled as student members. Dr. Ashwath Rao, Head of Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering welcomed the gathering and briefed about the IETE benefits the staff, students and the institute could avail. He also deliberated about the IETE financial assistance to organize various technical events like seminars, symposiums, expert guest lectures which in turn helps the faculty and students to get exposed to advanced technology. The inauguration was very special as the Chief Guest unveiled the curtains by pressing the remote which activated the dc motor drive and the other switch activated the servo motor and microcontroller for the flower petals stored to fall down. This was designed by one of the students Mr. Shamanth Gowda.

During his inaugural address Dr. K T V Reddy gave heads up about the various schemes for students and staff and also mentioned that one can get Masters Degree from IETE even while working. The Guest of Honour - Dr M. H Kori briefed the audience about how IETE facilitates in arranging invited talks by experts working in various domains for the benefit of the students and faculty. He also emphasized on the ways in which IETE forum can help students and faculty of other branches if interested in learning and getting a degree in Electronics and Computer Science. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, in his Presidential Remarks, shared the experience of his IETE journey at his previous institute and how we can take it forward at Sahyadri to make it one of the best South Zone centres by engaging in regular activities of IETE.

Representatives from RDL Technologies invited as speakers at Tech EDP 2018, NITK NITK STEP is an entrepreneurial driven self sustaining body for promotion of entrepreneurship. Tech EDP 2018, a Technology Based Entrepreneurship Development programme is a weeklong event at STEP showing experience and expertise drawn from various industry segments. Mr. Raghavendra G shetty and Mr. Pradeep Kumar C from RDL Technologies were invited speakers at this event.

As resource person, the team shared both entrepreneurial and technical experience on IoT, Software Defined Networks and Machine Learning with students and faculty drawn from multiple branches. Students expressed interest in contributing and being part of projects being executed at RDL and in the forthcoming days, a formal announcement in this regard can be anticipated. RDL thanks Dr. Sowmya Kamath S and Dr. Suprabha K R for the invitation and opportunity to interact with team NITK.

MDP on Digital Marketing for MBAs

Management Development Programme – Digital MarketingManagement Development Programme – Digital Marketing Department of Business Administration organized a Four-Day Management Development Programme (MDP) on Digital Marketing. Topics related to Email Marketing, Social Media Marketing and Web Analytics were covered. Students were given tasks to create email campaigns.

On the concluding day, the students were divided into teams. Four teams had to work on E-Commerce Business Plan while other three teams had to present and analyze on Web Analytics for their company. Mr. Vishal Patel, Associate Director-MetricStream, Bengaluru was the resource person for the Four-Day programme. This adds another feather on their cap enabling them to widen their scope of employment opportunities.

A One-Day workshop on Digital Signal Processor TMS320C6748 was conducted for the pre-final year students of Electronics and Communication Department. Mr. Ganesh from Edgate Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru was the resource person. He gave a brief note on Analog and Digital signal processing, advantages of digital signal processing over Analog signal processing with emphasis on DSP applications. Various types of Microcontrollers were dealt with in detail during the session. The architecture of TMS320C6748 was thoroughly explained. He also demonstrated the application of Digital signal processing on TMS320C6748 processor. Students had hands-on experience on the processor. Session concluded with discussion on various domains of signal processing and its scope in electronics industries.

A technical talk on Distributed computing was organized by Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering for the students of fifth and third semester. Mr. Deeraj Vijaya, Senior Software Developer, Siemens Technology and an esteemed alumnus of Sahyadri was the resource person. He briefed about cloud computing, types of cloud computing, edge computing and also spoke about importance of JavaScript.

Guest Talk on “Project Management” by Sr. Manager-Data Science, MResult Services Pvt. Ltd, Managaluru for ISE students

Project Management Project Management Dept of Information Science & Engineering hosted a guest talk on “Project Management” for the final year and pre-final year students. The invited speaker was Mr. Lanwin Lobo, Senior Manager-Data Science, MResult Services Pvt. Ltd, Managaluru. Mr. Lobo explained about the various phases of Project Management by taking live examples and also by engaging students. He also gave insights about the DevOps technology that is currently in limelight. His career success mantra was to pursue interested things at any cost and be ready to embrace changes.

Sahyadri holds One Day Training on BlockchainSahyadri holds One Day Training on Blockchain One-day Training on Blockchain organized by K-Tech Innovation Hub (NAIN), Govt. of Karnataka was held at the campus in association with Department of Computer Science & Engineering, DTILABZ Pvt. Ltd., Aptra Technologies Pvt. Ltd. and Sahyadri Centre for Cloud Computing and Cyber Security (S4CS).

Mr. Koshikraj, Blockchain advisor at UNITESERVE was the resource person. Mr. Koshikraj started working for a security firm during and after completing his masters’ degree from Manipal University. While there, he worked closely in the DevOps team for over a year. RSA gave him a lot of exposure to the security industry. Later, he started working as a senior software engineer in a startup called CoWrks where he gained a lot of exposure as a full-stack developer and in managing the team. After CoWrks, he devoted all his time to research on Blockchain. Mr Koshik Raj is an alumnus of Sahaydri.

The training program started with a formal inauguration. Dr. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, Dr. Rajesha S., Dean (Academics), Dr. J.V. Gorabal, HoD, Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), faculties of CSE and ISE were present.

The training program was divided into two sessions. The first session focused on theoretical aspects of Blockchain and Algorithm associated with Blockchain. Second, was a practical session fully focused on Smart Contract and Ethereum.

Nearly 40 students participated, who were truly benefited by this training program.

Vishal Samartha concludes the International ConferenceVishal Samartha concludes the International Conference Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA was invited as the guest for the Valedictory function of the Intentional Conference on Advanced IT, Engineering and Management held at St. Aloysius Institute of Management and Information Technology, Beeri Campus, Mangaluru. She congratulated the large number of paper presenters and appreciated the Faculty team in motivating the students to present research papers and for getting it published in UGC approved Journals. The papers presented were related to Machine Learning, IOT, Artificial intelligence, NLP, usage of algorithms and so on. The Post Graduate students of Bioinformatics, Software Technology, Computer Applications and Data Sciences eagerly paid attention to Dr. Vishal Samartha. In her speech, she said that country requires students with these hard skills. She urged them to develop Apps with a human touch because the ultimate user is to be kept in mind when making these Apps. She motivated the Generation Z to make innovations when in campus and to not let it die down on a research paper but rather take it to completion stage in the form of a product or service and thereby be job creators than job seekers.

Anti-Ragging Committee Annual Meeting held at Sahyadri The annual meeting of Anti-Ragging Committee was held at Sahyadri to discuss the various mechanisms to be implemented for the prevention of ragging and to create a safe environment at the campus. The meeting was attended by Mr. Siddanna Gowda Bajanthri, Sub-inspector from Mangalore Rural Police Department; Mr. Tharanath H P and Ms. Jaya T S - Parent Representatives; Ms. Apoorva, Student representative, the hostel wardens and Bus Drivers. The opinions and feedbacks from all the stakeholders were gathered and taking into consideration. Mr. Bajanthri interacted with the students and also visited the hostel to check the security arrangements and he expressed his satisfaction with the arrangements made.

Swami Sumanasananda visits Sahyadri campus Swami Sumanasananda, President of the Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa visited Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management. Chairman, Mr Manjunath Bhandary received him warmly and extended to him a cordial welcome. The Swamiji visited various departments and viewed the innovative labs, in-house startups and student-centric initiatives undertaken at the campus. He was fascinated with the student-centric initiatives undertaken by the college. He had words of praise for the unique education system established at Sahyadri.

Prior to his deputation to South Africa, Swamiji had served as the head of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Cherrapunji, Mehgalaya, India.

Campus Recruitment Drive - Wipro Wipro conducted the National Level Talent Hunt (NLTH) for Elite Hiring 2019 Engineering Graduates at Sahyadri for two days, to select the bright talents across the country. Sahyadri was one of the nodal centres for conducting the Wipro online test. More than 800 students from pool colleges participated in the online assessment. The results are awaited.

The technical training emphasized on basics and advanced 'C' programming. It included both theoretical & practical approach. They were also trained on Communication skills and Essay writing. The training concluded with the topics on Quantitative Aptitude & Logical Reasoning. A total of 136 students attended the training programme.

MBA Faculty facilitates a session on “HR Analytics” at JKSHIM Nitte

HR Analytics Prof. Sushma V, Dept. of Business Administration was invited at JKSHIM Nitte to facilitate a half day Hands-On session on “HR Analytics” for its MBA Students. Sushma was deputed by Sahyadri for a Short Term Course on “Hands-On HR Analytics” at IIT Kharagpur in the year 2015. Since then, she has been actively engaged in HR Analytics and developing herself on this current trending topic. During her session, she has not only introduced the concept of “HR Analytics” to the students but has also shared Case Studies and HR Analytics Tools that the corporate organizations use for their studies. This session was well appreciated by the students and faculty of JKSHIM Nitte.

MBA Alumnus interacts with the first year MBA Students Mr. Aadil Hussain (2014-16 Batch), Advanced Analyst at E&Y LLP, an Alumnus of the MBA Department addressed the 1st Year MBA Students. He joined as an Analyst at EY and is now promoted as the Consultant wherein he is handling the legal aspects with respect to Money Laundering and so on. His profile includes dealing directly with the company's Multi-national clients. He shared his overall experience at EY, and how students can get into various roles when it comes to applying for the different profiles of their areas of interest.

Alumnus of Information Science & Engineering interacts with students Mr. Lenson Saldhana, an alumnus of Information Science & Engineering interacted with the pre-final year students. Mr. Lenson owns a startup named “axndx”, which built the first xenon smart plug. He shared his experiences about how the startup was initiated and the hurdles they faced and also on how they overcame it. He also gave a glimpse about the apps developed by their startup. It was most encouraging when Mr. Lenson offered internships to Sahyadrians in his organization.

MBAs conduct ISR activity on the occasion of Children's Day

Siddharth Rajhans On the occasion of Children’s Day, students of MBA Department visited the Remand Home in Bondel, Mangaluru. The amount collected from voluntary contribution from students and faculty of the department were utilized to distribute clothes and sweets worth Rs. 15,000/- to the 38 children inmates of the Remand Home. This activity was held as an Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR).
