Dr. Abdul Sharief takes over as Chairman, Research Consortium of Mangalore Zone

Dr. S. A. Khan, Principal, Beary’s Institute of Technology, handed over chairmanship of the Research Consortium to Dr. Abdul Sharief, Principal, P. A. College of Engineering. Dr. Khan will take over as Principal, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh and was the Founder-Chairman of the Research Consortium. The consortium formed with the aim of promoting research culture among the coastal cluster of Engineering colleges coming under the Mangalore zone, has been instrumental in promoting awareness and importance of research among academicians. Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal and Prof. M. N. Nayak, Administrator & Dean Placement of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, and Prof. Sudesh Bekal , NITTE College of Engineering were present on the occasion.

Dr. M. N. Shetty Visits Sahyadri

Dr. M. N. Shetty, renowned metallurgist, visited the Campus. He called on Dr. D. L. Prabakara, Director, and Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal. He also interacted with Prof. M. N. Nayak, Administrator & Dean Placements and Prof. Umashanker B. S., Dean Academic. The progress of the infrastructure in particular and the institute in general was acknowledged and appreciated by him during the visit.

Dr. D. Veerendra Hegde visits Sahyadri

Dr. D. Veerendra Hegde, Dharmadhikari, Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Temple and Mrs. Hemavathi Hegde and other dignitaries visited the College on behalf of “Vishwa Tuluvere Parba – 2014”, an amalgamation of Cultural and Literary programmes, along with exhibition, competitions and entertainment akin to Tulunadu culture, which will be held on December 12, 13 and 14, 2014 at the college premises. More than fifty thousand people from all around the world will attend the fest.

The delegation was taken around the Campus and they appreciated the infrastructure, facilities and development of the institution. Later a core committee meeting was held with the delegates.

International Conference on Agribusiness Management - Opportunities and Challenges held in the Campus

A three-day International Conference on Agribusiness Management-`Opportunities and Challenges’ was held in the Campus with 200 delegates including 35 international delegates from 3 countries taking part in the Conference. Dr. Chowdappa P., Director, Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kasaragod, inaugurating the programme, spoke about the shift from agriculture to agribusiness, attracting young stars towards agribusiness by making agribusiness a profitable venture.

Dr. P. Chandra Shekara, Director, Agribusiness Centre, MANAGE, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, was the keynote speaker for the programme. Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation, in his presidential address spoke about the culture in agribusiness. He gave many examples of his life to define the culture in agribusiness. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, gave the welcome address, Dr A. P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration, gave the overview of the conference.

The international conference was organised by the Department of Business Administration in association with National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad and the University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shimoga Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kasaragod, supported this conference as knowledge partner.

A cultural extravaganza after the formal programme was held for the participants of the Conference where Sahyadrians and delegates showcased their talent in vocal music, instrumental music and dance.

The aim of the conference was to explore and map various opportunities and challenges for agribusiness in developing economies including India in the internationally integrated and globalized economic environment.

Eminent Experts Address Opportunities and Challenges in the International Conference on Agribusiness Management

On the second day of the International Conference on Agribusiness Management, Mr. H. S. Krishna Murthy addressed the topic on `Agri Entrepreneurship’ along with skill development. Dr. Maheshwarappa, CPCRI, Kasargod, was the moderator for the session. Dr. Manjunath, Director, SKDRDP took up the second session on `Retaining Youth in Agriculture and Women in Agribusiness.’ He spoke about the importance of family structure in agriculture and stressed on the point that youth today are no more interested in agriculture and also the hardships the Indian farmers go through as the returns in farming is too far and too less. The session was moderated by Dr. Udayachandra, Professor, SDM, Ujire.

The third session was on `Infrastructural and Institutional Framework of Agribusiness Management’ which was delivered by Dr. Philip, Director, Department of Master of Business Administration, Kerala Agricultural University. He emphasized on the management skills that are required in agribusiness management. He made a special mention of communication skills, analytical skills, computer skills and critical thinking which is imperative for any manager in agribusiness. He said that an individual should have both; aptitude and attitude to serve in rural areas. Institutions should foster case method of learning rather than lecture method and the faculties should have expertise and industry exposure in addition to mentoring students. The session was moderated by Dr. M. M. Bagali, Professor, Jain University, Bangalore.

Mr. Arunkumar Khannur, Chairman and CEO of ISQT Process and Consulting Services Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore, spoke on `Agricultural Marketing-Domestic and International Agricultural Trade and Marketing Policies.' He enlightened the audience on the use of technology which he believes can help farmers to eliminate middleman. He stressed that, agricultural marketing needs to be reoriented to respond to the market need. Delegates then presented their research papers after the sessions by the eminent experts.

On the final and concluding day of the three-day International Conference on Agribusiness Management, Mr. Mahadevaiah, Former Deputy Director, C.F.T.R.I, Mysore, engaged an interesting session on `Processing of Fruits and Vegetables for Value Addition.’ He spoke about the processing of various fruits and vegetables and the availability of market and technology for the same. The session was moderated by Dr. Sandeep. Dr. Allen Pereira, Former Director, National Institute of Bank Management then delivered the final session on `Agriculture services: Finance, Insurance and Extension.’ Delegates then presented their research papers after the sessions by the eminent experts.

Dr. L. C. Soans, Soans Farm, Moodbidri, was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory function which was presided over by Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangalore.

Policy makers, financial institutions supporting agribusiness’ Non-governmental organizations, experts from the industry, academicians and researchers from the related areas and students from related streams participated in this conference. All the papers accepted for presentation in the conference will be published in the form of a book with ISBN Number. 15 best selected papers will be published in ITIHAS – The Journal of Indian Management which is internally indexed and listed in EBSCO Publishing.


                

Recertification Audit by ISO

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management is recertified by ISO 9001:2008 for the next three years 2014-17 by TUV- NORD. Recertification was conducted at the Campus by the audit team of TUV- NORD, comprising of Shri. Mohan Khandate, and Shri. Srivatsa. They visited various departments and rigorously audited the processes and procedures. They expressed satisfaction and happiness with regard to the progress made by the institute, the infrastructure provided and procedures and systems adopted.

Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt – 2014

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation addressed the student council members and faculty members on ‘Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt’ to be held in the month of November in thirty Pre-University Colleges. It was launched on 7th of October. Primary focus of the event is to bring out and enhance creativity in Pre University Students. The College has identified more than one hundred Pre University Colleges with the help of faculty members and students of Sahyadri. The talent hunt consists of four competitions like Essay Writing Competition, Project Competition, Quiz Competition and Model or Prototype Competition. Two-day National Level Quadcopter Workshop-cum-Championship Conducted

A National level Quadcopter workshop-cum-championship by Revert Technologies in association with IIT ROORKEE was conducted in the Campus. Ninety-eight participants from various colleges in and around Mangalore like NMAMIT, Canara Engineering College and St. Joseph's Engineering College participated in the workshop. First day of workshop was both theoretical and practical and the second day was a full hands-on session. With enormous enthusiasm, students built their own QuadCopters and flew them at the entrance of the college. This was indeed a very good learning process for the students. Out of the four teams that got the wild card entry ticket to participate in IIT ROORKEE championship in March 2015, two were from Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management and two from NMAMIT. The students who got selected are Mohammed Safuvan C. A. I year, Mechanical Engineering, Nadeem Ahmed Al Surafa, I year, Mechanical Engineering, Shailesh Kumar, I year, Civil Engineering, Sri Harsha Bhat, II year, Mechanical Engineering, Jyotsna Alva, II year, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Bharath Mavoli, II year, Mechanical Engineering.

Sahyadrians Aim for Uplifting of Agricultural Sector

A group of students comprising of John Nikhil, Semester VII, E&C, Shrajan Bhandary and Sujay Shetty, Semester V, E&C and Suraj Shettigar, Semester I, Computer Science & Engineering visited various places in and around Shimoga with the aim of uplifting of agricultural sector. The students were guided and encouraged by Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. The students also visited Shimoga Institute of Agricultural and Horticulture Sciences and had the opportunity to interact with the Chairman of Education, Dr. Kumara Swamy and Engineer Dr. Shashidar. They spoke to the students about the endless problems faced by farmers in their day to day lives and also relevant solutions for the same. The students were also provided with a wide range of ideas and suggestions by the resource persons to develop projects.

They further discussed with Mr. Ullas, a Research Scholar about his present work . He also took them on a tour of the campus, describing all the work being conducted in the institute simultaneously. The students were enlightened by the innovations and works of Late Dr. Chandra and his son Mr. Savyar Sachi at Dr. Praffula Chandra's farm house.

They visited many farms on the outskirts of Shimoga and interacted with the farmers about the difficulties faced by them. The group was well endowed with the extensive knowledge which will help them in their projects and research.
