Sahyadri gets the status - 12 (B) of UGC act 1956 by University Grant Commission, Government of India

Sahyadri is one among the few colleges of the State which has been recognized by the Apex Body of Government of India. With this recognition, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru has become eligible to receive Central assistance grants for projects, funding for students and faculty, for overall development of the Institute and in higher education.

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management is now declared fit to receive Central assistance in terms of Rules framed under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956. Faculty & Students can now also receive UGC's support in respect to projects related to Technical education & Management. This recognition is based on infrastructure facilities available in the college and also the quality of education imparted to students.

He declared the 19th VTU Power Lifting competition open and inaugurated the event by unveiling the power lifting weights. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal gave the Presidential address post which, events of various categories were conducted. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman was the Chief Guest of the Valedictory Ceremony and he gave away the prizes to the winners.

19th VTU State Level Inter-Collegiate Power Lifting competition was organized by Sahyadri in the campus In the Girls Section, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management emerged as the Overall Champions. Global Academy of Technology (GAT) Bengaluru were Overall Runner-up & JNNCE, Shimoga were Overall Third Place.

In Boys Section, the Overall Champions were NMAMIT, Nitte and Overall Runner-up was shared among JNNCE, Shimoga, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management and St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru.

16 New Meet records were created in this competition. A total of 140 boys & 45 girls participated in this event from various engineering colleges of Karnataka.

Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2018 Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2018 Department of Business Administration organized a One-Week Induction Programme for MBA Students of 2018-20 Batch.

Mr. Loyson Paes, Senior Learning Partner HR, Danske IT, Bengaluru was the Chief Guest of the inaugural programme and during his speech emphasized on the “The ultimate potentials of Human Brain”. He gave a brief introduction about his career and also shared the 3 mistakes he committed during his MBA giving hints that students should not do such mistakes. He explained the importance of having a control on one's brain.

Mr. V Ramani Venkat, NLP Trainer also facilitated a day-long session for the new batch of MBA on the topic “Classroom to Boardroom”. He informed the students on important skill sets required to become a successful MBA. He also conducted a session on “Gamification” which is a simulation of an actual business environment. He threw light on succession planning; nine box theory and talent management through these games. It also included basic concepts of marketing.

Ms. Nithasha Shetty, Image Consultant and Corporate Trainer facilitated a session on “ABCD of Image Management” – Appearance, Body Language, Clothes Power/Communication and Digital Presence.

The next session was on “Story Telling: Journey from a Job Seeker to a Job Creator and now managing both” by Ms. Shipra Rai. She is an individual contributor managing the portfolio of ‘Diversity & Inclusion’ at Mphasis Pvt Ltd. She is also an entrepreneur owning Spindrift and Thyme Family Restaurant in Mangaluru. Shipra re-iterated Maslow’s Need Hierarchy and stressed that his theory was applicable to everyone, in any point of time in life and that it pushes every individual upwards to take risk and also achieve. She said being an entrepreneur is fulfilling and at the same time it is extremely challenging. She also appreciated the good mix of Gender parity in the 1st year MBA.

Prof. Udaykumar from SDM Law College held a session on “Stress Management” and spoke on how to overcome Stress in terms of exams, profession and life in general.

Dr. Habeeb Rahman, Chairman & Managing Director, Unity Health Group –Mangaluru spoke to the students and urged them to perform. He said that Management education is the best education in the world. He also conveyed that Mother is the best nature created manager on the earth. He urged students to read motivational books, have gratitude and build great network.

Mr. Abhijith Karkera held a session on “Spontaneity”. He carried out several activities which brought out the essence that we don’t get much time to take decision in this fast-paced world.

The event was participated by Police Commissioner Cricket Team, Deputy Commissioner Cricket Team, Superintendent of Police Cricket Team, Media City, Media Rural Cricket Team and Sahyadri Cricket Team.

The event saw the presence of Mangaluru Police Commissioner Mr. T R Suresh; Deputy Commissioner of Police Ms. Uma Prashanth; Mr. Sujith, Additional SP, Dakshina Kannada; Mr. Sunil Shetty, International Athlete and Mr. Srinivas Nayak, President of Working Journalist Union, Mangaluru during the inaugural and closing ceremony of the tournament.

Intellectual Property Rights: Significance in Business and Research Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru, in association with Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC), Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Karnataka and Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), organized a day-long workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights: Significance in Business and Research”.

Sahyadri is graced by the visit of Mr. Subramanian Sivakumar and Mr. M. Manjunath Mr. Subramanian Sivakumar, CEO, Pratian Group of Companies, a serial entrepreneur, startup adviser and a servant leader, and Mr. M. Manjunath, an IT industry expert for two decades, visited Sahyadri Campus. They interacted with Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman and Mr. Johnson, Head of Sahyadri Hub for Innovations and Entrepreneurship – SHINE. They discussed about planning on establishing Center of Excellence at Sahyadri.

Both guests were spellbound by the student-centric initiatives of Sahyadri. They expressed their thoughts and suggestions as to how things could be taken forward and scaled up in order to benefit the organization and the nation.

First Year Engineering students win places in Technical fest at NIT, WarangalFirst Year Engineering students win places in Technical fest at NIT, Warangal By the support of Dtlabz and under the mentoring of Thruptesh V, students of 1st year Engineering participated in various events like Hovercraft, Line follower and thrust in the recently held fest at National Institute of Technology, Warangal.

Team Trojans consisting of 16 students have occupied 6th place in Hovercraft, 4th and 7th position in Line follower and 7th place in Thrust events.

Proud moment for them was that the other teams which attended the events were consisting of students from 2nd, 3rd and 4th year; however the team of Sahyadri were from first year.

Indian Ordinance Factories approved Caliper as a supplier

Indian Ordinance Factories approved Caliper as a supplier Mr. Praveen Kumar, Works Manager along with his Quality Engineer, from Indian Ordinance Factory, Trichy (a Defence Establishment) audited Caliper to include as vendor. After interacting with Caliper Team, Ordinance Factory approved Caliper to be part of their supply chain. Formal certificate will be issued soon. With this, Caliper can now supply goods & services directly to all 41 Ordinance Factories located all over India. They also visited RDL, DT Labs & were taken through the college.

Sahyadri Management Student’s Association (SMSA) InaugurationSahyadri Management Student’s Association (SMSA) Inauguration Sahyadri Management Student’s Association (SMSA) was inaugurated by Mr. Yathish Baikampady, CEO, Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project. Sampath, Child Artist in the leading role of the recent super hit Kannada movie – “Sarkari Hiriya Prathamika Shale, Kasaragod” also graced the occasion. Sampath is the nephew of Mrs. Vanitha, Office Staff of MBA Department. Mr. Akshay Somayagi, Proprietor of Aakar Creations, Laser Cutting & Engraving, was also a part of the ceremony. He is the Alumni of Sahyadri MBA.

Mr. Yathish during his inaugural address urged the Student Council to meet regularly every week without disturbing the regular classes. He said - MBA certificate is not everything. It will only give support. It is more like entering into the war field without gadgets. Hence one should equip themselves with the life skills. Give more importance to communication skills. He stimulated students to think of starting business with their group of friends as Sahyadri Campus has lot of energy in the form of facilities readily available to the students to get into entrepreneurship. He also said - he doesn’t want the Student Council to pick up thrash in the beach but wants them to create a system so that these things are taken care by itself regularly.

The office bearers were lead through oath taking by Prof. Samarth Shenoy. Mr. Shainith Shetty, President of SMSA shared the Plan of Action of the Academic Year 2018-19.

Hacktoberfest HackNight hosted at SahyadriHacktoberfest HackNight hosted at Sahyadri SOSC hosted Hacktoberfest HackNight in association with K-Tech Innovation Hub at Sahyadri to celebrate the month of open source with Hacktoberfest. The event was inaugurated by Mr. Shashank Krishna, Padma Shri 2019 (Nominee) and Director of Katmai Infotechnology Pvt. Ltd, Bengaluru, followed by interaction with students regarding Smart India Hackathon. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal; Prof. Prakhyath Rai, Faculty Coordinator of Sahyadri Open Source Community and Mr. Arjun Suvarna, Chairperson of Sahyadri Open Source Community, addressed the crowd. The main event started off with a workshop followed by an 18-hour Hackathon where around 120+ students got together as teams and worked on projects under various domains like Education, Entertainment and Productivity to help innovate and enhance the current system. The projects were then open sourced through GitHub paving way for new open source contributors to be born. Mr. Manjesh P Shetty, Regional Coordinator of Mozilla and Alumnus of Sahyadri, was the Chief Guest of the valedictory function.

First-year Engineering students secure third place in Chemical Breakdown Quiz event at Reflux-2018 organized by NITK- Surathkal


Engineer 2018 In the event ‘Engineer 2018’ held at NITK, Suratkal, first year engineering students won 1st and 2nd place in light follower. There were 2 light follower bot from Sahyadri. The team won 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in line follower out of 5 bot from Sahyadri. The team was mentored by Hrithvik Patel from 2nd year Electronics & Communication Engineering and Lakshmeesha P Kotian from 2nd year Computer Science & Engineering.

MBAs win 1st place in ‘BIZLYTICS’ event held at NITK, Surathkal

BIZLYTICS Shrikantha S and Shanthi A from 1st year MBA won 1st place in ‘BIZLYTICS’ event held at NITK, Surathkal. In the first round, they had 30 multiple choice questions relating to business with the time limit of 1 hour. In the second round, they were given 3 questions and had to develop a flow chart based on it. Participants scoring 50% aggregate in both the rounds qualified for the third round. In the third round, they were given raw data relating to sales of nearly 500 entries. They had a task to analyze the data and also interpret using charts. They also had to do a 7-minute presentation and provide solutions to increase sales. In the final round, they were given a hypothetical situation of having 60 crores and form an IPL team with 15 players consisting of 9 Indian players and 6 foreign players.

MBAs secure first place in ImpeDATAtive Event at “ETTIN 2k18” organized by JKSHIM, Nitte

Thirty Eight MBAs recruited by KPMG–GDC Nagarjun M H and Sanjana Cion won 1st place in ImpeDATAtive event at “ETTIN 2K18” organized by JKSHIM, Nitte.

The event consisted of four rounds in which they had to prepare 2 PPT presentations, one Case Study and lastly DATA Analysis. Here, the participants were given series of data and they had to filter out the unwanted data and then guess the companies based on the data which they have collected. The PPTs had to be submitted before 6 am on the final day of ETTIN 2k18 and the presentations had to be given at 9 am in front of resource persons who took it upon them to distract and cross question the presenters.


Sahyadri team was well appreciated by the organizers of ETTIN 2k18 during their Valedictory ceremony since Sahyadri was the only college which had students from 1st year MBA representing the institution. In addition to this, they were a good competition and also won 1st place in one of the most challenging events of the fest.

A total of 30 students from the MBA Department and Engineering took part in the recently held “Vaividyathe” - Infosys Variety Competition. “Vaividyathe” is the cultural fest conducted by Infosys on the account of Dasara celebrations. Team Sahyadri have secured first Runner-Up in the variety competition.

Former Scientist at DRDO visits Sahyadri Mr. Sudhindra Haldodderi, Former Scientist at DRDO, Ministry of defence, Government of India and presently working as Vice President Operations at Engineer Materials Inc., visited Sahyadri. After visiting various facilities, start-ups and industries he appreciated the institute for its uniqueness in creating a learning ambience for students. He was happy to know about the all-round achievements and recognitions by awards of Sahyadri students in various fields. He had an intense discussion with Team Challengers regarding SAE Aero modelling and gave important inputs. Mr. Sudhindra had an elaborate discussion with Principal Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte and the key functionaries inviting Sahyadri to have an MoU with his company resulting in benefits to students and the faculty members.

Mr. Sudhindra Haldodderi is a noted columnist and very popular for his regular writings on science and technology in Vijaya Karnataka daily newspaper. He has also published few books.

Connect. Create. Innovate." is being held from 25th to 27th October 2018, at Aerocity, New Delhi. It is organized by the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

DTi Labz is chosen to be a part of the Karnataka State Pavilion at the India Mobile Congress along with 9 other startups from all over Karnataka. DTi Labz is being represented by Gagandeep B and Poojary Dikshith of 5th and 3rd Semester respectively from the department of Electronics and Communication.

The booth was also visited by Mr. N Sivaselam (Special Secretary, Dept. of Telecom, Govt. of India) & Mr Kishore Babu (Deputy Director General, Dept. of Telecom, Govt. of India). The students representing DTi labz, got an opportunity to pitch their Product i.e Dream Kit, in front of an esteemed jury comprising of the CEO of IMC 2018, Mr Randeep Raina (Head of Technology, Nokia) and Mr P Balaji (Chief Regulatory and Corporate Affairs officer, Vodafone Idea Limited). The efforts of the students were commended by many in the Karnataka Pavilion and promised support via their networks. The DTi labz booth was visited by many delegates, students and media personnel who immensely appreciated the product for its simplicity.

MBA Dept organized “SAMMILAN”, an Alumni Meet 2018

SAMMILAN SAMMILAN Alumni are the key stakeholders who play a prominent role in the success of any institution and hence it is imperative to connect with them regularly. Under the banner of “Sammilan”, an Alumni Meet 2018 was an effort of the Dept. of Business Administration-MBA to engage and seek valuable feedback from the alumni. It was an informal get together that was organized to get connected with the alumni and make the bond stronger with the institute. A gala evening with music, dance, games, food and fun, started off with a formal programme in which Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA shared the success story of Sahyadri and apprised the alumni of the recent developments that took place from the holistic perspective of the institute. Post this, alumni volunteered to give a Cultural show along with the current Student Council Members which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. It was a great forum for get together and cherish past experiences and moments. Each one left with a bag of memories and promised to return for the next meet.

Innoventure 2018 The zonal level of Innoventure 2018 was held in the campus. The event was jointly organized by the college and DTI Labz

InnoVenture 2018 is India's first Ideation and Entrepreneurship Challenge for students from grades 4th to 9th conducted by IIM Kolkata and Intelligence Plus. The objective of the Challenge is to equip children with crucial 21st Century skills essential for solving real-life problems.

Almost 80 students from different schools in and around Mangalore participated in the challenge.

The credit for organising and successfully carrying out this event goes to Mr. Subramanya Rao, a Vth Semester student from the Dept of Computer Science.

Labour Welfare Organization organized a “One-Day Workshop for Beedi workers of Mangalore area” at Sahyadri

One-Day Workshop for Beedi workers of Mangalore areaOne-Day Workshop for Beedi workers of Mangalore area A one-day workshop was organized by The Ministry of Labour and Employment Welfare and Cess Commissioner Labour Welfare Organisation, Bengaluru, Government of India in collaboration with International Labour Organization (ILO) on the topic “Gender Mainstreaming and Occupational Safety and Health” for Beedi Workers of Mangalore Region. The trainers were Mr. Tsuyoshi Kawakami and Ms. Aya Matsuura, Specialists in Safety and Health, ILO Decent work team for South Asia. They educated the beedi workers on material storage & handling and simple but low cost method of improving safety, health and productivity in the workplace. Participants were also made aware on sexual harassment at the work place. It was an interactive session wherein the participants were asked to list out 3 good things at workplace and 3 things they would like to improve in their workplace. Mr. Satpal Sharma, Undersecretary Ministry of Labour, Govt. of India; Mr. K Shekar, Welfare and Cess Commissioner, LWO Bengaluru; Chairman Mr. Manjunath Bhandary were the Guests for the valedictory ceremony.

RDL is one of the few companies that NASSCOM identified for product showcase at this prestigious event. This conclave not only helped RDL in generating prospective leads but has also helped to benchmark the solutions and capabilities. Mr. Sandeep and Mr. Pradeep from RDL participated in the two daylong event showcasing the SCADA based Open Platform Datalogger and Cloud-PLC Solutions.

The take-away from this event was a good list of prospective customers, promising use cases and confidence that RDL stands tall among the best in the industry in terms of technology adoption, innovation and service models. Outbound Training for MBAs in SakleshpurOutbound Training for MBAs in Sakleshpur A total of 110 second year MBA students accompanied by 7 faculty members went for an Outbound Training at Sakleshpur. The objective of the training was learning of the academics to be converted to practical learning and reflection coupled with how to improvise and understand their shortfalls, overcome their deficits and preparation of professional expectations of the industry. Mr. Ramani Venkat, NLP Trainer, facilitated the training.

Students also enjoyed trekking Murkannu Gudda, a mountain which is at around 3900 ft. The experience gave them an insight into the challenges they face and also the satisfaction when they achieve it.

The programme began with a formal inaugural. Dr. Deepa Adiga, Director, KMC blood Bank, Mangalore and Mr Manoj Puthran, Branch Operations Manager, HDFC Bank were the chief guests for the programme. Dr. Srinivas Rao Kunte, Principal, presided over the programme. Mrs. Shreelatha U.A., Academic Administrative Officer spoke about the rationale of the programme. As an observation of Rastriya Ekta Diwas, Vice Principal, Prof S.S. Balakrishna led the audience through the Oath for Unity. Dr. Deepa Adiga addressed the students about the importance of blood donation, the eligibility to be a donor and the health benefits of donating blood. Mr Manoj spoke to the students and appreciated the students’ participation in this noble cause. Dr. Srinivas Rao Kunte in his presidential address spoke a few words about the Rastriya Ekta Diwas. On this occasion students from every class took the Oath of Unity. It gives us immense joy to mention that more than 200 students volunteered for blood donation during the camp.

Civil Engineering Student receives DETI @ NIDHI PRAYAS grant

Ms. Deepika C.N. a 3rd Semester student of Civil Engineering received a grant of INR 60,000/- to carry out a project entitled "Peizo Electric Roads for Sustenance." Ms. Deepika had presented her project proposal at Adhyaman Engineering College, Hosur, Tamilnadu and the same received a grant from DET @ Nidhi Prayas.

National Initiative for Developing & Harnessing Innovation (NIDHI), promotes acceleration of young and aspiring innovators and PRAYAS programme supports young innovators turn their ideas into proof concepts.

Further, if Ms. Deepika succeeds in her project work, she would be facilitated with an additional INR 35 Lakhs as an extension grant and would be sent to Israel to carry out further works.

Ms. Deepika is guided by Dr. Suresh Babu and Prof. Sunil Kumar K. in this project.

Caliper manufactured nuclear reactor components becoming 3rd Company to do so in India Caliper Engineering & Lab Pvt Ltd successfully manufactured 3 nuclear reactor components in special steel, import substitution for NPCIL, Kudankulam, which needs to go-thru’ tricky heat treatment process as well as very difficult machining contours on a very hard material. Only two other companies in India are handling these parts and Caliper achieved this herculean task within its first year of inception.

Dr. Rathishchandra R. Gatti, Principal Investigator and Dr. S Manjappa Sarathi, Director Research and Research Advisor of the Indo-Denmark DST-IFD Grant application presented the project titled "Developing The Next-generation Oscillating Wave Surge Converter For Electricity Generation And Desalination In Southern Peninsular Region Of India” at Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi.

The proposed project is a joint collaboration of Sahyadri, NIT-Silchar, IIT Bombay, MIT Manipal, NDRF, New Mangalore Port Trust, Caliper on the Indian side and Aalborg University and Wavepiston Company on the Denmark side.

There were 24 Teams from all over India who participated in Amalthea’18, a Technical Summit at IIT Gandhinagar and it’s a great honour to mention that 'Team Meraki' of Sahyadri, comprising of 19 students from First year Engineering have won both 1st and 2nd prize in 'Roboquest' event of Amalthea’18 at IIT Gandhinagar.
