Engineer’s Day: Sir M. Visvesvaraya the Engineer Remembered

On the occasion of Engineer’s Day the College paid homage to Sir. M. Visvesvaraya. The Principal, the HODs, the faculty, the staff and the students showered flowers on the statue of Sir M.V. and remembered Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya on his 155th birthday.

Padmashri Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao Inaugurates Sahyadri Center for Social Innovation

The Sahyadri Center for Social innovation which includes a Hands-On Experience Lab, Engineering Sense Lab, Innovation Lab and Product Design Lab was inaugurated by Padmashri Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao Former Vice Chancellor of Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Former Director of Defence Research and Development Laboratory. He unveiled the Hands-on Lab Manual and addressed the gathering sharing some of his experiences in serving the nation.

He stated that the students should utilize the model of learning wherein teachers will do less of teaching and students learn more. He also emphasized that institutes should provide the environment and space for innovation where students being dynamic, highly networked, ambitious and comfortable in adopting new technologies can make wonders happen if opportunities are provided to them. He illustrated about Skunkworks, where projects are being developed by a group of people who research and develop a project primarily for the sake of radical innovation. He advised students to realize their potential and break barriers in order to innovate and explore. He spoke about developed countries like Germany, Japan and USA which provide more leverage for innovative thinking. He also shared his memorable moments with Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. He concluded by saying that solutions can be provided to problems through innovative products, services and processes. Finally he expressed that this day would be considered as Learner’s Day. He assured Sahyadrians of his continuous support in the area of innovation.

A Host of Dignitaries Visit Sahyadri

Dr. Shashidhara Marathe, Diamond Light Source, UK ,visited the campus and shared his research experience with the Principal, Director-CENT and with the members of the core research team and discussed his research work on coherent X-Ray diffraction with phase contrast imaging. He conveyed that he would be happy to collaborate with the Sahyadri researchers in the future. He greatly appreciated the beauty of the Campus. An alumnus of Mangalore University he works at the Diamond Light Source, which is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire.

Mr. Subramanya Bhat - AGM - Marketing and Mr. K. Ganapathy Subramaniam - Head - Applications & Training from Janatics India Private Ltd. visited the campus and interacted with the Management and the faculty members to explore the possibilities of setting up the hands-on experience lab in the institution equivalent to that of the industry so as to make the students excel in their future career.

Dr. Ganesh Kannarpady from the Nano-Centre, University of Arkansas, Little Rock, visited the campus and shared his research experience with the core research group. He interacted with the researchers and informed the audience that current research in the areas of super-hydrophobicity for de-icing of aircrafts, solar electrochemical cells for generation of hydrogen as fuel for fuel cells and micro/nano channels on surfaces for the early detection of cancer using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy is going on in the University of Arkansas. He proposed that he would be happy to collaborate with Sahyadri researchers in the future. He also appreciated the beauty of the Campus and its ambience. An alumnus of Mangalore University, Dr. Ganesh Kannarpady is working at the newly formed Nano-Centre, University of Arkansas, Little Rock.

Dr. Krishna Shenai, Vice President, LoPel Corporation and Adjunct Professor, EECS Department, Northwestern University, USA, visited the campus with the interest to explore the possibilities of uplifting enormous Indian talent with western approach to high technology education, research and technology commercialization. Having reviewed the education, research and commercialization efforts at Sahyadri, he has expressed his desire to provide the leadership and advice to move Sahyadri on par with top academic institutions in the world. He has taught at some of the best universities in the United States of America including the University of Wisconsin at Madison, WI and The University of Illinois at Chicago and he has raised venture capital and founded two successful startup companies.

The system of education is churning out scores of people brilliant in their respective fields but unsuccessful in building happy fulfilling lives. In order to orient the youth, Ramakrishna Math, Mangalore, Brahmachari Aathmaroopa Chaithanya on his visit briefed about ‘Shraddha- a Symposium on Education for Life Management’, for the students and ‘Prajna- A Symposium for the college faculty that was organised during the month providing an apt platform to discuss and reflect on the ancient contemporary and new- gen education systems.

Mr. Ajith Pai, promoter and whole time Director of Pai International Electronics Limited visited the campus. He had opportunity for a hands-on experience of our labs and appreciated the college and its infrastructure. He also visited the electronic laboratories and offered to provide the electronic items required for the electronics lab.

Mr. Anand G Naik, Managing Director & CEO of BOREDBEES Tech Solutions India (P) Ltd. and a young entrepreneur who has embarked on a 10,000 kms entrepreneurial journey began his journey this month from Chennai, will drive across 10 states, 25 Cities, addressing 30,000 young and potential entrepreneurs to motivate and take them to the energetic world of entrepreneurship. He strongly believes this initiative would bring a change in the mindset of the aspiring entrepreneurs. He founded his first company at the age of 17 and has received many awards for his work.

He interacted with the Entrepreneurship, Research and Project Student Council co-ordinators and motivated them to become future entrepreneurs. He shared his startup experiences and gave his definition of entrepreneurship – 'convergence of all skills'. Students were greatly inspired by his talk and benefitted from this session.

The Chairman Invited to Asian Summit on Education & Skills (ASES) 2015

Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary was invited to the Asian Summit on Education & Skills (ASES), 2015, held at Bangalore. He was one of the delegates to the summit and had an opportunity to meet the Education & Skills Ministers from across Asia, the Indian Central and State ministries, Senior Policy Makers, Eminent & Senior Educationists, Owners of Educational Groups and other key stakeholders to share and deliberate on various issues pertaining to the policy & implementation of best practices in the education and training sector.

He also had a round of discussions with Dr. Sharanprakash Patil, Minister for Medical Education, Government of Karnataka & Dr. Assadullah Hanif Balkhi, Minister of Education, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

VTU Centralized Placement Cell Holds Meet for Placement Officers of Engineering Colleges at Sahyadri

Mr. Geo D'Silva, Director, VTU-Centralized Placement Cell, and Special Officer (VTU Placement), introduced the placement officers to the new portal for placement - VTU Centralized Placement Cell (VTU-CPC), which consists of areas such as Human Resource Conclaves and IT Domains and Academics. He emphasized on the point that all training must be done by certified trainers.

VTU-CPC consists of assessment tests and career direction for final year students. The training programmes will include aptitude training, personality development, business communication in English and technical training.

The portal also includes placement drives, government job links and other placement related news, circulars, announcements, industry internships, mock tests, online practice tests as well as overseas opportunities in 10 to 15 different countries along with the courses offered by their universities. He encouraged the placement officers of the different colleges to get affiliated under the VTU-CPC portal to reap the benefits of centralized training and placement.


Sahyadrians Recruited by Maventic Innovative Solutions Pvt. Ltd.

Mr. Rolan Ashley Carlo of Electronics & Communication Engineering and Mr. Prajwal of MCA of the 2015 passed out batch of students have been selected by Maventic Innovative Solutions Pvt. Ltd. in the recently held campus recruitment drive.

A Slew of Campus Recruitment Drives were held during the month

Huawei conducted a pooled campus recruitment drive for the 2015 passed out students of Computer Science & Engineering, Information Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Master of Computer Applications. The results are awaited.

Aimfill International conducted a pooled campus recruitment drive for the 2015 graduates of Engineering in the stream of CS, IS ,EC of 2015. The results are awaited. The job profile will give the students exposure to various facets of corporate work culture like sales, marketing, client presentation, corporate law, franchise development, operations and management of a center etc.

• Xchanging Technology Services India Pvt. Ltd. conducted a pooled campus recruitment drive for the 2015 graduates of Engineering in the stream of CS, IS, EC, EE and Mechanical Engineering. Three students have been selected


Bridgestone India Pvt. Ltd. conducted a campus recruitment drive for the 2015 passed out Mechanical Engineering students for the role of Graduate Engineer Trainee offering a package of Rs.6 lakhs/annum. The results are awaited.


The Indian Navy conducted an exclusive campus recruitment drive for the final year students of engineering under the University Entry Scheme for the position of Technical Executive. The selection process involved a group discussion followed by a face-to-face interaction. The results are awaited.


• Maiyas Beverages & Foods Private Limited held a pooled campus recruitment drive for MBA Sales Trainees, year 2015 pass-outs who had an opportunity to apply for the ten open positions. A Written Test, Group Discussion and Personal interview was conducted. Two of our students have been shortlisted and the final results will be announced soon.

Deeksha Bhandari at the London School of Economics

Ms. Deeksha Bhandari has joined the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE).London, U.K., to pursue her postgraduate studies there.

Team DREAMERS at Pilikula Science Exhibition


A team from Sahyadri DREAMERS R&D Pvt. Ltd. participated in the exhibition representing Sahyadri at the Pilikula Science Exhibition organized by Pilikula Science Center, where schools and colleges were invited for the two-day exhibition. The students of the College presented five projects which included, Octocopter, Smart Helmet, Humanoid, Bluetooth bot and the 3D Printer. Eminent personalities like K.V Rao, Director, Pilikula Science Center, M Ibrahim, District Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada were present and appreciated the students for their efforts. Students from schools and colleges all over Dakshina Kannada participated in the exhibition.

Sahyadri Ranked Sixth

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management has been ranked sixth out of thirty-seven colleges in the VTU level Rest-of-Bangalore Zone Chess Tournament held at SJMIT, Chitradurga.

Flautist Pandit Rupak Kulkarni Hindustani Musical Concert at Sahyadri

Flautist Pandit Rupak Kulkarni in association with the SPIC MACAY, Mangalore Chapter gave a Hindustani musical concert in the Campus mesmerizing the audience with his musical flavor and unique creativity. The future musicians of Sahyadri were deeply touched by the soothing rhythm and the audience greatly appreciated the concert and the finesse of the flautist. Read more…
