Sahyadri receives guests from P.A. College of Engineering & Management Sahyadri has been graced by the visits of several distinguished personalities in the past. Similarly, this time, a team comprising of several distinguished personalities from P.A. College of Engineering visited Sahyadri.

The team comprised of Mr Abdulla Ibrahim, Executive - P.A. Education Trust & son of Chairman Dr. Hajee P.A. Ibrahim; Dr. M. Abdul Salam, Chief Executive Officer (PA Group of Institutions in India & abroad) and former Vice Chancellor, University of Calicut, Kerala; Dr. Abdul Sharief, Principal; Dr. Ramis, Vice Principal; Prof. Surfraz Hasim J., Director (Academics); Dr Krishna Prasad, Head, Department of Bio-Technology; Mr. Syed Amin, Asst Professor, Dept of MBA; and Mr Ammar Khan, Private Secretary to CEO Dr. M. Abdul Salam. A few words about the chairman of P.A. Group of Institutions; Dr. Hajee P.A. Ibrahim is a philanthropist and an astute businessman. He established P.A. College of Engineering & Management in the year 1999. At present they have Polytechnic and other institutions both in India as well as abroad especially UAE. His name is synonymous with quality and integrity in the fields of textiles, jewelery, education, automobile and various other businesses.

The guests met and interacted with the Chairman Mr Manjunath Bhandary. They went around the campus and also visited the various departments of Sahyadri and their respective innovative centres. They were spellbound by the various student-centric initiatives undertaken at Sahyadri and had nothing but deep admiration.

The team thanked the chairman profusely and said that they were honoured to visit the unique world class campus of Sahyadri. They expressed profound gratitude on having got the opportunity to go through the entire facility and for the magnanimous hospitality extended to them.

As an outcome of this interaction, the management of both Sahyadri College and P.A. College reached an agreement to exchange resources. It is hoped that this would surely enhance the growth of both the institutions and will culminate into a fruitful association in the years to come.

Mr. Kunja Rajbhandari graduated from Tribhuvan University & has tremendous years of experience in related field. Criss Cross International Pvt. Ltd is a leading Education Consultancy in Nepal. It is actively engaged in guiding students for their higher education. It is authorized by Ministry of Education, Nepal and Educational Consultancies Association, Nepal (ECAN). Criss Cross is involved in Educational Counselling, Career Counselling, Educational Seminar & Workshops, Test preparation and Language classes, Documentation & Visa Processing.

Both Mr. Kunja and Dr. Shiva Sharan went around the campus and visited the in-house start-ups and industries. They appreciated Sahyadri for creating a conducive learning environment for the students.

Karnik presented a video of the French Ambassador where he speaks about Indian-ness.

Professor, Department of Psychiatry, K S Hegde Medical Academy. She took up a session on the Common Psychological Problems faced by students to the team of volunteers who were selected from every section of engineering and management.

Installation of Sahyadri Toastmaster Club Installation of Sahyadri Toastmaster Club Toastmaster being a prime dais for enhancing leadership and communication skills was inaugurated and installed as a club in the campus. Mr. Prashanth Rao, Technical Manager of Mathworks was the Chief Guest of the inaugural ceremony. Vice-Principal, Prof. S S Balakrishna; TM Malini Hebbal, Educomp Director; TM Savitha Salian, Area Director and fellow toastmasters were also present during the event. The club was installed with chartered members taking their oath and receiving of the Charter Banner. President of Sahyadri Toastmaster Club, Mr. Samarth Shenoy welcomed the gathering.

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized “CATAPULT 1.0”

CATAPULT 1.0 CATAPULT 1.0 On behalf of Engineers Day, Department of Mechanical Engineering organized “Catapult 1.0” in the memory of Sir M Vishweshvaraya. The event was held with the main intent to exhibit the technical talent of Mechanical Engineering students. Around 20 catapult teams were part of the event with around 100 participants. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Pramod Mishra, Deputy General Manager, MRPL, Mangaluru. During the inaugural address, he mentioned about the Role of engineers in building the society, importance of fundamentals of subjects which are much essential for Design, operations and maintenance of various mechanical components. He also stressed on activity-based learning & appreciated that such events provide a platform for students to exhibit their talents. Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal presided over the function. Dr. Rajesh, Dean-Academics; Dr. Ravichandra Rangappa, Dean-Industry Connect; Dr. Ravindra Babu, Associate Professor; Mr. Kiran Prakasha, Assistant Professor were present during the event.

Mr. K. Rama Rao, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mangalore South Sub-Division and Mr. Bhajantri, Inspector, Mangalore Rural Police Station addressed students about the evils of Substance abuse, Ragging, and Cyber Crime. Emphasizing on substance abuse problem, in his speech, Mr. Rama Rao shared his experiences of the cases he handled relating to drugs and revealed that 90% of the time, the people involved in such cases will be students.

A Renewable Energy project titled - "Developing the Next-Generation Oscillating Wave Surge Converter for Electricity Generation and Desalination in Southern Peninsular Region of India" proposed by Dr. Rathishchandra R Gatti and his team has been selected for presentation at DST Delhi office on Oct 3, 2018. This proposal is a joint proposal with trilateral collaboration involving seven collaborators that includes - Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, NIT Silchar (India), IIT Mumbai (India), MIT Manipal (India), Aalborg University (Denmark), and Curtin University (Australia). The Industry partners include New Mangalore Port Trust (India) and Wavepiston (Denmark).

The Indian team includes - Dr. Rathishchandra R Gatti, Professor-Dept. of Mechanical Engineering; Dr. Rajesha, Dean-Academics; Prof. Ravichandra Rangappa, Dean-Industry Connect; Dr. Subhrajit Dutta, NIT Silchar; Dr. Muralidhar Killi, MIT Manipal; Dr. Siddarth Ghosh, IIT Mumbai; Dr. B Shivamurthy, MIT Manipal and Dr. Ian. M Howard, Curtin with Dr. S Manjappa, Director (R&D, Consultancy) and Prof. M M Kamath as the advisors.

The project aims to research and develop ocean wave energy converters for desalination plants initially for India and Denmark and then provide a roadmap to deploy the technology worldwide.

The Ozone Day commemorates the date of signing in 1987 of Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the Ozone Layer.

World Ozone Day celebrated at Sahyadri The program was inaugurated by Chief Guest, Mr. A.G Pai, Director & CEO, JBF Petrochemicals Ltd, Mangalore. Dr. S. Manjappa, Director – Research & Consultancy, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management addressed the gathering and briefed about the theme of Ozone Day stating that the day signifies an opportunity to focus global attention on protecting the ozone layer.

Mr Rajshekhar Puranik, Senior Environment Officer, KSPCB, spoke about the effects of excessive consumption and exploitation of natural resources due to urbanization and industrialization. He pointed out that proper planning is required for sustainable development. In his presidential address Dr. R Srinivas Rao Kunte, Principal, spoke about climate change and its impact on the environment. As a part of theprogram,technical talkswere delivered by two eminent resource persons Dr. S.Manjappa and Dr. Ganesh D.B. Dean, R&D and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, G M Institute of Technology, Davangere. Dr. S Manjappa spoke about the harmful effects of pollution on Ozone in Troposphere, effects of Ozone depletion and removal of Ozone depletion substance for sustainable development. Dr. Ganesh D. B. spoke on "The trends in I.C Engines and Fuel Injection System for Better Environment".

MBAs-attend-a-Three-Day-Outbound-Experiential-Training-programme-at-Ankola MBAs-attend-a-Three-Day-Outbound-Experiential-Training-programme-at-Ankola A total of 34 students from MBA Marketing and Human Resource specialization along with Prof. Girish M had been to Nature Bound Sahyadri Organisation, Ankola for a three-day Outbound Experiential training programme. The students were tested in different ways both physically and mentally. The training kick-started with an ice breaker named “Walking on a Rope”. The students were then divided into teams and were asked to set a SMART goal and write what the individual would want to change before leaving the camp. The next activity was Key punch. In this activity, students had to bring out their innovations and formulate new strategies every time they punch the keys and most importantly follow the company rules.

Besides, there were various activities like warm up excercises and mind games like scavenging the jungle, obstacle run etc. This was followed by review of each day activities.

Technical lectures delivered as part of “Techno week – 2018” by ACCE, Mangalore Centre The Association of Consulting Civil Engineers, one of the strongest professional organizations in Dakshina Kannada is organizing a week long program called “TECHNO WEEK-2018” in association with RAMCO Cements Ltd in and around Dakshina Kannada District, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bharatha Rathna Sir. M. Vishweshwarayya.

In this regard, students of fifth and third semesters Civil Engineering were delivered technical lecture on ‘Landslides: Predict, Prevent & Protect’ by Dr. Sunil, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, NITK, Surathkal, which shared insights into types of landslides, landslide triggering mechanisms, mitigating landslide hazards, geological and geotechnical investigations, design alternatives for soil slopes, soil reinforcements and soil nailing techniques.

Another lecture on “Build it Fast – Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum Walls” by Mr. Raghavendra Holla, Assistant Director – Development, Department of Civil Engineering, MIT, Manipal was delivered to the students which dealt with manufacturing, transporting and erecting GFRP walls.

A total of 175 students from 25 colleges participated in the programme. Three sessions were facilitated by the in-house faculty – Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA; Mr. Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor and Prof. Mithun Ullal. The key feature of this year’s LDP, was the visit to the in-house start ups/industries to view the work flow and also interact with the Company Heads. Sahyadri has not only awakened the leadership ability through sessions but has also made them exposed to a corporate environment.

The inaugural began with a presentation about the Council members and their roles and responsibilities. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation, gave the opening remarks and urged the students to follow Role Models like Dr. Bharath Shetty and work towards building a better society through exemplary leadership. Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal facilitated the installation of the Council members and Dr. Rajesha, Dean–Academics lead the students through their oath. Speaking to the students, Dr. Bharath Shetty called onto students to work for unity irrespective of what religion they follow or ideological differences that they have.He discussed about the current education system and that students must use the available opportunities to show their leadership skills. Top-US-Universities-visit-Sahyadri Engineering students had a great opportunity to participate in the Panel Discussion on "Higher Education Opportunities in the US" organized in association with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the world's leading Ranking Agency.

Delegates from New York University, George Washington University, University of South Florida, Keck Graduate Institute & Kennesaw State University participated in the discussion and deliberated on the pros and cons of education in US followed by Q & A from the students.

The delegates also interacted with the faculty members to explore academic and research collaborations benefiting student fraternity of both the nations. The team was amazed with the learning infrastructure created in the campus and appreciated the establishment of in-house industries and start-ups as an initiative in reducing the industry-academia gaps and also providing students with hands on experience which is the need of the hour.

E&C Engineering Faculty has been conferred with the Doctorate Degree at IIIT-A

Faculty has been conferred with the Doctorate Degree at IIIT-A Mr. Anush Bekal, Associate Professor, Department of Electronics & Communications Engineering has been conferred with the doctorate degree at the 13th convocation held at the prestigious Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A). The title of his PhD thesis is "Improved Design of Asynchronous ADC with Reduced Comparator Counts" which was carried out under the guidance of Dr. Manish Goswami, Associate Professor & HOD, Department of Electronics & Communication (Microelectronics Division), IIIT-A. This research work was jointly carried out with Prof. Ashok Srivastava, Louisiana State University, USA which has lead to the fabrication of the Integrated Circuit prototype (credits: MOSIS foundry) and has resulted in 6 publications in the standard SCI-journals and IEEE International conferences.

MBAs participate in ‘Atharv 2018’, a Cultural cum Management & Literary Festival, IIM Indore

MBAs-participate-in-‘Atharv-2018’,-a-Cultural-cum-Management-&-Literary-Festival,-IIM-Indore A total of 18 MBA students from the final year participated in one of the biggest fest in Central India – Atharv 2018, the Cultural, Management, and Literary fest of IIM Indore. Management and literary events have encouraged the budding managers and entrepreneurs to put on their thinking caps. Marketing and HR events have provided a great platform to our students to flex their intellectual muscles. Students participated in events like Head hunter, Finopoly, Devil’s Advocate, Avant Garde, Imperium, Pragya, Clash of Cluts and Game of Shadows.

The team reached the finals of three major events and finished at 7th position. Over 30 colleges including IIM's participated in the fest.

Yugandhar & Dr.Ashutosh Saxeena of AIMSCS visit Sahyadri Two eminent personalities Dr. U.Yugandhar, Director of Management Services, and Dr. Ashutosh Saxeena, Professor, both from CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (AIMSCS), Hyderabad visited the campus for Student Interaction Program. Dr U.Yugandhar being the pioneer of the AIMSCS organization shared information about AIMSCS and its services to the society and emphasized on the need and demand forcyber security. Dr. Saxeena delivered a talk on "Cyber Security & Cryptography". He spoke about the basics,challenges and applications of Cyber security and inspired the students and faculty members to begin their projects and research in the area of cyber security via student interaction program. Dr.Saxeena and Dr.Yugandhar shared ideas about how both organizations can collaborate to contribute for the secure platform for Digital India applications and for short term courses to enhance the technical skills of Stakeholders.

Scientific Officer, Kudankulam Project - Nuclear Power Corporation visited Caliper Mr Kishore, Scientific Officer, Kudankulam Project - Nuclear Power Corporation, visited Caliper Engineering & Lab Pvt Limited, a Sahyadri startupto discuss the ongoing projects ordered on Caliper.He also spent some quality time with the young CAD engineers who have joined recently @ Caliper to complete a design of the nuclear reactor components which will be manufactured by Caliper in the coming weeks.

Mr Kishore was impressed with Sahyadri and its initiatives and invited Caliper to visit their site again to discuss potential re-engineering opportunities, which can be taken up involving students and faculty.

Pre-Placement offer by TVS Motor Company Ltd. Pankaj Kumar Rathi from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering from 2019 outgoing batch, who had interned under TVSM 'UTKARSH 2018' has been selected by TVS Motor Company as a Graduate Engineer, in the recruitment drive held at TVS motor company premises.

Table Tennis Team wins Third Place Indian Navy visited Sahyadri to conduct a pool campus recruitment drive for the Final Year Engineering Students. A total of 88 students attended the drive and the results are awaited.

TCS conducted a National Qualifier Test to recruit engineering students of 2019 Batch. Fifty Five students were shortlisted for the first round and Sahyadri is leading in the Mangaluru region. Furthur rounds would be held at Bengaluru.

INFOSYS-Recruitment-Drive Campus Recruitment season for the 2019 Batch started with our Day 1 company, Infosys. Over 400 students from all branches attended the drive out of which 76 students have made it to Infosys.

IBM India conducted a campus recruitment drive for the students of 2019 outgoing batch. Students from various disciplines viz. Computer Science, Information Science and Electronics & Communication, participated in the drive. A total of 108 students have been shortlisted for final round which has been a record for IBM in Karnataka.

Two-Day Aeromodelling Workshop organized by Team Challengers

Aeromodelling Workshop organized by Team Challengers During the Day One, students were explained about the preliminary and conceptual design of Radio controlled plane. Post this; they had an activity to interact with each other creating new bonds of friendship. Next session was on electronic components and their uses. Further, students learned the theoretical design by XFLR software.

During the Day Two, students had structural session in which they built RC plane utilizing the materials provided to them. Mentors of each group explained the reasons behind all the motions through a Real Plane. Further, Air-show was also held. A member from each team presented their plane to the mentors. Workshop concluded after announcement of the winners and distribution of certificates as well as the prizes.

Department of Business Administration organised a three days Management Development Programme (MDP) on Payroll Administration in association with Empowering People Knowledge LLP, Bengaluru. Mr Ramesh K G, Dean – Strategic Planning was the Chief Guest for the inaugural programme. Mr. Ganesh Rao, CEO, Empowering People Knowledge, LLP was the resource person for the programme. The Management Programme was coordinated by Mr. Padmanabha B.

The resource person elaborated on the topics payroll process, Bifurcation of CTC, LOP, Components of Payroll process, CTC computation, income-tax slabs, IT calculations, investment plans to save IT, HRA exemption calculation, tax calculation report, Form 16, ITR1, e-filing, IT updates, PF Challan, etc. HR students of Sahyadri and faculty members and students from other institutions, and corporate delegates participated in the programme.

Technical Talk on Special Concrete for the Civil Engineering students Mr. Bijeet Kumar, Manager - Marketing, RMC Readymix (India) gave a technical talk on Special Concrete for the final year students. Special Concrete is special purpose concrete for increased strength and durability in various construction applications.

In his talk, Mr. Bijeet Kumar discussed about the history of RMC in India. He spoke about the quality management system, the evolution that has taken place in concrete technology over the years and the merits of using RMC. He also spoke about the different types of concrete like light weight concrete and porous concrete and applicability of special concrete in construction projects.
