Aerophilia 2019

Aerophilia 2019  Aerophilia 2019, a Two-Day National Level Aeromodelling competition was held in the campus and ISRO Hackathon was a part of this mega event. Aerophilia was inaugurated on 20th Sep, 2019 by the Guests Mr. Manish Saxena, Mr. Akhileshwar Reddy, Mr. AkshayPande, Ms. KanikaJakhar and Mr. Prasun Kumar. This was followed by a workshop headed by the Senior ISRO Scientist - Ms. KanikaJakhar, explaining briefly about NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) including data transfers through Bluetooth, USB cable and through GPRS. The next session was handled by CEO of DSI - Mr. Sachin Ganesh & team, who briefed about practical use of these devices and use of MIT App Inventor.

Aerophilia 2019 consisted of 20 different events with exciting cash prizes. About 1,000 students from various schools and colleges across India including IITs and NITs have participated in the programme. The main attraction of the event this year is the Hackathon conducted by ISRO exclusively at Aerophilia on the Navic chip.

The Chief Guest of the event Cdr T R A Narayanan of Indian Navy, who is also a prime member of Aeromodelling Association of India, appreciated the enthusiasm of the students in organizing and participating in the event. He was impressed by the paper plane competition and said, “Paper planes are not just for kids. The aerodynamics that goes into the simple planes is also high level of aerodynamics”.

Aerophilia 2019 Aerophilia 2019 Mr. Maneesh Saxena and Mr. Akhileshwar Reddy, Deputy Directors of Industry Interface under Satnav program by ISRO were also present during the occasion. Mr. Ashwin L Shetty who was the Composite Manager at Airbus Helicopters in China also spoke on the occasion.

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman while addressing the gathering said - “The intention of this event is to ignite the minds of young Engineers and to create awareness on the advancing technologies in the field of Aerospace”.

The event was called open by the Guests by giving a throttle and a RC plane flying high in the air with the Aerophilia banner.

Aerophilia 2019 This was followed by the Air Shows by Mr. Abhay Pawar and Mr. Ragavendra B S, who are both professional RC flyers. The schedule for Day One of Aerophilia had technical events like Aeromodelling, Drone Race, Water Rocket and Tug of Bots and also the Hackathon conducted by ISRO Scientists. Fun events like Treasure Hunt, Rubik’s cube and CS GO were also held.

The day concluded with cultural programme which included a concert by Team Martians and a Stand-up comedy by Mr. Mandar Bhide from Bingo Comedy Adda.

Aerophilia-2019Aerophilia-2019 On 21st Sep, 2019, there was a technical talk given by Mr. Manish Saxena, which was conducted for students from Dept. of Electronics & Communication and First year followed by the technical assistance by DSI and supported by other launch pads.

The 36 hours ISRO Hackathon came to an end with all participants gaining knowledge about their idea and getting exposed to NavIC modules by providing a hands-on experience to them.

Aerophilia-2019Aerophilia-2019 The Hackathon concluded on 22nd Sep, 2019, with the pitching session by 20 teams coming from various colleges including MITE, SDIT, SJEC, Indian Navy, MITS, BIT, MHSC, IIAEM-Jain University, EEC, SMVITM, and SMVEC. After which, there was an evaluation session done by the ISRO jury members. The event ended with a Valedictory Ceremony.

They interacted with the Aerophilia Event head - Mr. Abdul Shameer to get more insight on academic practices in connection to the in-house industries and Start-ups. The visitors were impressed with the work culture of the institution and expressed their views to get associated to the college by doing internship in the in-house industries in the campus.

AICTE-INAE Distinguished Professor S. SeetharamuVisits the Department of Mechanical Engineering

AICTE-INAE Dr. S. Seetharamu, currently Technical Advisor for National Design Research Forum (NDRF) and Formerly Director of Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bengaluru, visited the Department of Mechanical Engineering on September 21, 2019 in connection with planning the work-programs under the AICTE-INAE Distinguished Visiting Professorship Scheme. He also participated in the Seminar on “Future Technological Trends in Ceramic Materials” that was held in the College. Prof. Seetharamu had been selected as AICTE- INAE Distinguished Visiting Professor for Department of Mechanical Engineering of our College under the above scheme for a period of one year starting from Jun 1, 2019 upto May 31, 2020 which is extendable up to 5 years as industry expert.

Dr. S. Seetharamu received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Science in 1982 after completing M.E. in Mechanical Engineering from IIScand B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Bangalore University. Dr. S. Seetharamu joined CPRI after serving in L&T and retired as Director of CPRI. He has also served as a Faculty at Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan.

His visit to the department was concluded with an interaction with faculty members focused on planning the technical activities to be organized for the benefits of the students and faculty members during his future visits.

Teachers Day at Sahyadri Department of Art and Culture celebrated the Teachers Day in the presence of Principal, Vice Principal, Dean Academics and the HOD’s of all departments. The student council representatives of cultural department were also present. The winners of the drawing competition held on the occasion of Teachers Day for the students were announced.

Sahyadri Felicitates Teachers on the occasion of Teachers Day In recognition of the valuable service rendered by teachers, Sahyadri felicitated Shri K R Devadas, Retd. Head-master of Shree Rama Aided Higher Primary and High School, Farangipet for his lifelong service in the field of education. On this occasion on 5th Sep’19, Shri Krishna Kumar Poonja, Founder - Trustee of Sewanjali Trust, Farangipet was also felicitated in recognition of his sincere social service to the society. Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice Principal, gave the keynote address.

Shri K R Devadas shared his experiences as a teacher and gave valuable advice to faculty in order to become great teachers. Shri Krishna Kumar Poonja spoke about the importance of a teacher in the society, their role as a teacher in building a progressive society and moulding the youth. He emphasized on the need to develop service mindedness among self and the students. The Principal, Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, gave the Presidential address.

Seventeen MBAs Recruited by KPMG-GDC

Seventeen MBAs Recruited by KPMG-GDC KPMG-GDC team visited Sahyadri during 9th to 10th Sep’19 to conduct a pool campus recruitment drive for the students of MBA 2020 outgoing batch. The drive started with a pre-placement talk by Mr. Badri Subbarao Bangaru, Executive Director, KPMG-GDC. Ms. Lakshmi Venkatesh, Manager-Human Resource and Mr. Muhammad Umar, Senior Executive-HR from the recruitment team were also present. The recruitment drive was conducted for two days inclusive of Aptitude Round and Personal Interview, wherein a total of 17 students from Sahyadri MBA were selected by KPMG-GDC.

A Patent titled “System and Method for Conversion of Sunburnt Bricks into Second Class Bricks” has been filed with Patent file application number 201941036244 by a research team consisting of Ms. Rajmunni Hombal and Mr. Akshay P N, students of Final year Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering respectively; Dr. Rathishchandra R Gatti, Professor and Prof. Pooja K from the Department of Civil Engineering. The Patented application relates to the area of construction technology and will soon be published and commercialized once the IPR is protected.

In-house industries and Start-ups of Sahyadri have presented their products and services at the booth during the three days. Engineering students namely Rahul from Second year; Dhanush and Deekshith from Third year and Akarsh Shetty, Pushparaj & Ramkishor from Final year are have taken part in this exhibition gaining huge learning exposure, connects and leads.

Mr. Akshay Samanth, an alumnus presently working as an Project Engineer at Allcargo Logistics, Bangalore Division, was invited as the guest of honour. He spoke about the various challenges that a Civil Engineer faces in the initial stages of his career and the right attitude that one must possess to emerge successful during the same. Dr. Nalini. E. Rebello, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering, presided over the function. In her speech she stressed on the importance of hard work and how it could act as a catalyst and help the students in being successful in their future endeavours. MBAs participate in Atharv’19, a Management Fest at IIM Indore Department of Business Administration-MBA stimulates students to participate in Management Fests and Events organized by Premier Institutions and this year, a total of 6 MBA students - Nagarajun M Hejmadi, Mohammed Hasheer, Mohammed Shadman, Rashik M, Keerthan Shetty and Chethan Kumar travelled to Indore to participate in ‘Atharv’19’, the annual Cultural, Management & Literary Fest of IIM Indore held during 6th to 8th Sep’19. This event saw participation of 40,000+ students from colleges across the country. The students took part in various events like Head Hunter, Prajnya – A Quiz competition, Game of Shadows (Mid-Night event), Clash of Cults and Devil’s Advocate. Sahyadri MBAs were one among the Top 8 Teams in 3 events namely - Head Hunter, Prajnya and Clash of Cults. Students have returned with enormous exposure and connect with the professors and participants from different parts of the country which shall prove beneficial for research-oriented future initiatives.

Two teams of first year engineering have won prizes in the Inter-collegiate Poster Presentation competition organized by Mental Health Nursing Department, Yenepoya Nursing College, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) in commemoration of World Suicide Prevention day on the theme Shinning a light on Suicide Prevention. Ms Aanchal and Mr Dhanush S won the second prize and Ms Pooja K V Shekar and Ms Adithi V Shetty won the third prize. They competed against 20 teams to secure the prizes. Mr Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor, provided the students with the necessary guidance and conceptual understanding about the theme and also accompanied the students to the event.

He also spoke on the latest trends in automotive sector and called on students to take up research in the field of automotive electronics.

MBA Dept organized a One-Day Leadership Development Programme for UG Student Council Members A One-Day Leadership Development Programme (LDP) was organized by the MBA Department for the undergraduate Student Council Members on 20th Sep’19. A total of 221 students from 22 colleges of Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu District participated in the programme. The programme was inaugurated by Chief Guest – Dr. K V Malini, Principal of Canara College, Mangaluru and Guest of Honour – Mr. Pruthvi Ambar, Sandalwood & Coastalwood Actor. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA in her speech, welcomed the gathering and introduced Sahyadri to the participants. Prof. Sushma V, Chief-Coordinator of the programme spoke about the four-year journey of LDP at Sahyadri and how we have scaled higher in terms of number of participants as well as quality of the programme. Dr. K V Malini, in her inaugural address shared her perspective of being a leader and appreciated Sahyadri for organizing such a thoughtful event for outside students. Mr. Pruthvi Ambar spoke about his journey of being a follower and his efforts to be a Leader. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal shared the Presidential address and in his speech he motivated students to note down the key takeaways of the sessions and practice in their role as a Student Council Member in their respective colleges.

The day-long event concluded with the valedictory ceremony in which participants shared their opinion of the programme and the Resource persons were felicitated for their efforts in putting up a great show.

Prof. Ramesh KG, Dean-Strategic Planning welcomed the gathering.

Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA introduced Sahyadri and the Department to the new entrants. During the Inaugural Address, Sandhya appreciated the Voluntary Mentoring System at Sahyadri unlike other colleges that she visited, wherein students need to earn a Mentor and does not come to them easily. She urged students to invest their time & effort on tasks that have sheer purpose and impact. She said – “Make your Dream your Goal and work towards it”. She congratulated the students as they are now a part of an institution that provides world-class facilities to students.

Sahyadrians Participate in the Purple Run Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal in his Presidential address mentioned about the increase in the number of in-house companies with the aim to provide internship opportunities as per AICTE Norms. He also encouraged students to take up Entrepreneurship as their career. Prof. Akshatha P, the Coordinator gave information about the sessions and activities lined up during the Induction Programme.

Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2019Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2019 On 17th Sep’19, the day two of the Induction Programme, Mr. Sunil Stephen, Co-founder of Trattoria Restaurant, Munchbox Catering and Stephen Bosco Architecture and Design shared his failure & success story. He emphasized on Self-belief, Realities of life, Value people and not money, Life is not easy, Perseverance – Never Give Up attitude. He urged students to nurture their business ideas and take it to the closure.

The next session was facilitated by Mr. Johnson Tellis, Founder of DREAMERZ. He shared his journey from being a student of Sahyadri till an entrepreneur in Sahyadri Campus. He recalled the contributions of his team mates in building DREAMERZ. He emphasized on Team Building, choose right person and develop a long-term bonding with them. The last session of the day was by Mr. Sushil Gupta, Soft Skills Trainer who conducted an Activity-based session on ‘Product Launch’. Students had to present their product and received feedback from him.

Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2019Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2019 On 18th Sep’19, the first session was facilitated by Ms. Rashmi Bhandary, Dean-Placements. Her talk was on her life story and the struggle she faced to get the first job. She also shared about her efforts to brand herself in order to procure the right placement. She also re-iterated the reality of Job Market. She suggested APPS, Websites and Newspapers that can contribute to the student’s progress. She also urged students to be active on social media and insisted on pursuing paid internship.

Next session was conducted by Mr. Abhijith Karkera, Manager at Swiggy, Mangaluru who carried out a psychological activity and demonstrated how thinking of people influence decisions in our life. He shared the importance of Body Language and Voice Tone by quoting his life experience.

Dean Academics, Dr. Rajesha S addressed students with regards to Outcome-based Education. He emphasized on creative and analytical thinking. He also shared the significance of higher studies. The last session of the day was taken by Prof. Shruthi Rajan who spoke about the link between mental health and physical health and how illness of either of the two affects the other. She also spoke about the common mental disorders and explained how it could be overcome.

Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2019 On 19th Sep’19, Ms. Shaine Pillai, Image Consultant & Skill Trainer interacted with the students and shared knowledge on maintaining individual image in the corporate world. She gave personal examples and information regarding image management and development of soft-skills. The core topic of the session was on Image Cycle - How to groom themselves and also social etiquette.

The next session was taken up by Mr. Nithesh Kumar on Martial Arts. He gave awareness on how to stay safe in the neighbourhood. He demonstrated few stunts which could help young generation to save themselves from any mishaps.

She emphasized on ‘Nothing is new, everything is recycled’. She encouraged the students to adopt a spirit of voluntarism which would help them go far in their life. She also stressed on how important communication is and that one should always be a keen learner.

The next session was conducted by Mr. Rajesh Naidu, Program Director at Aptra Technologies Pvt. Ltd., an in-house company at Sahyadri. He gave insights on what Aptra Technology is all about. He also encouraged the students to take up courses on Data Analytics which would be of great importance in the years to come. The next session was facilitated by Mr. Ankit Kumar, Student Counsellor. He stressed on the importance of Physical Health and Mental Health.

The students also had a session on Zumba which was conducted by Ms. Zin Shan, Fitness Professional at Shan’s Fit Fusion.

Morning session was a meet up of local Entrepreneurs Isaac Vas (incoming president of KCCI), Divakar Pai (incoming secretary KCCI), Vathika Pai (Vathika Enterprises), Lionel Arhana (CA) and Dr. Molly Chaudhuri (MSNM Besant Institute), Dr. Vishal Samartha (Director-MBA) along with the Start-up heads of Sahyadri to initiate an Entrepreneurship development forum in Mangaluru region.

During the afternoon session Mr. Nagaraja interacted with the aspiring students on the topic of Entrepreneurship for local development with the advice that as long as the problem statement is valid and the solution original, never give up.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Varshith K.N stressed on the importance of basic knowledge about various technical subjects to enhance the academic performance. He also gave overview on preparation to be done in order to get better offers from various Mechanical industries. Further, he gave brief exposure about the role of mechanical engineer in the marine industries, importance of the discipline, necessary skills involved in technical and time management. Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal spoke encouragingly on the endeavours of the department and wished the association a successful year ahead. He also expressed his whole-hearted support towards the working of the association. Prof. Ravichandra K.R., President of FLAMES and Head of the Department gave introductory remarks. The volunteers provided their HLA samples collected from their mouth through buccal swab and they got themselves registered in the universal database. The Camp received good response, as more than 250 members participated in the camp.

The IEEE Execom meeting of IEEE, Mangalore sub-section was held at Sahyadri on 21st Sep’19. Prof. Manohara Pai, IEEE chair addressed the students of IEEE- Student chapter Sahyadri and gave them the insights about the IEEE as a professional body and its advantages to the student community. He also urged the students to organize quality technical events under the IEEE banner.

In this meeting, various events to be held by the Mangalore sub-section were also discussed. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Manohara Pai, Professor MIT, Manipal. Design 101 Workshop' by Mozilla Sahyadri and SOSC

Mozilla Sahyadri conducted a hands-on session on 'Design 101' on 31st August '19. The Workshop was conducted by core team members of SOSC and Mozilla Sahyadri. The first session of the workshop was conducted by Mr. Jehad Mohamed, Co-Design Head SOSC and ex-Club Captain Mozilla and he covered topics on Open Source and how we can contribute to it, Designing and Designers and basics of Adobe XD. The second session was conducted by Mr. Nathaniel Ryan Mathew, Vice-Club Captain Mozilla and he covered topics regarding Colours and its significance in designing. The Last session of the workshop was conducted by Mr. Dhanush Bangera, Co-Design Head SOSC and he covered topics regarding animation. The workshop was organized by club Captain Basavarajeshwari.

Third Session for ‘AI/Big Data’ Future Skill Vertical Dr. Syam S Siwakaruni from the Dept. of Information Science & Engineering facilitated a session for the Teaching & Non-Teaching staff of ‘AI/Big Data’ Future Skill Vertical. His session was on Application oriented AI in day to day life as a focal point bringing out numerous examples such as Google Glass, Nike Fuelband – Calories Burnt, iOS Siri – Personal Assistant, IBM Via Voice – Speech Recognition, SMART Homes and so on. He re-iterated the Evolution of IoT since 2009 and emphasized on the role of AI in IoT as there are large number of companies investing hugely on IoT. He also shared the challenges and Issues related to AI and the ways to overcome these challenges.

As a hands-on experience, various mobile applications were developed by the attendees. The applications were developed using Thunkables and MIT App, inventor platform.

Sahyadrians Participate in the Purple Run The Students and faculty of Sahyadri participated in the Purple Run Marathon on 15th September, 2019 organized by Forum Fiza Mall at Pandeshwar, Mangaluru. Forum Purple Run, is an initiative by FORUM to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s so that people can recognize it and procure the right treatment. Alzheimer's is a progressive and irreversible neurological disorder that impairs basic neurological functioning. It is the 5th leading cause of death in people over 55 years of age, and in India, more than 4 million people suffer from some form of dementia. The Students of First year Engineering and second year MBA along with the faculty participated in the five-kilometre marathon.

Directors of a Non-Profit organization in Varanasi visited Sahyadri for discussion on Social Impact Projects Ms. Tara Celli from California, USA and Ms. Kiran Pal from Varanasi were at the campus to discuss on extended activities for their Social Impact Project. Both are the Directors of a Non-Profit Organization named – ‘Strength India’ in Varanasi. They are also the Founders of ‘WanderFree Traders Pvt Ltd.’, an import, export and wholesale business.

Tara is a Graduate in Sociology and came to India for her societal-impact research work. Kiran is a B.Ed. holder and has also done her M.Com. She is a Yoga Teacher as well. Both are into the business of manufacturing Sanitary Pads under the Brand – ‘(em) PowerPads’ and discussed their business proposal with the Sahyadri Team. Mr. Santhosh Kumar, Proprietor of Fringe Elite, Mangaluru introduced them to Sahyadri.

The recruitment was for the position of Trainee Sales & Service Engineers. The selected candidate will work in their Technical department. A total of 113 students participated in the drive & the results are awaited.

The session was conducted by the resource person - Mr. Anand, Team Lead from Challengers Foundation, Bengaluru. Mr. Anand pursued his engineering from BMS Engineering College, Bengaluru. During the session, he discussed about the importance of direct selling business or multi-level marketing in the present market scenario. He also stressed on the benefits of being self employed.

Sahyadri-Motorsports Members of Sahyadri Motorsports working with the project “Levitas Racing” - student version formula car have participated in the workshop conducted by Formula Bharath Academy in IIT Madras, Chennai on 22nd Sep, 2019. The workshop was based on detailing about Decision-Making during Design & Manufacturing of student Formula car. The participants were Shreyan Apposa from Department of Information Science & Engineering and Preethesh B, Vishal H K and Sohan Alva from the Mechanical Department.

The workshop also stressed on producing simple and efficient ways of delivering the cost report and business presentation. The students also got to witness sessions of eminent person from Mathworks and Ather Energy.

The Formula Bharat 2020 competition shall be taking place at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore during January 22 - 26, 2020. The competition will focus on the combustion category and will be following an adaptation of the Formula Student 2019 Rules document.
