Zonal Level Competitions of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt (SSTH) – 2014 Held at Mahesh P U College and St. Aloysius P U College

The Zonal Level Competitions of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt (SSTH) - 2014 were held at Mahesh PU College, Mangalore. Prof. Anil Mascarenhas, Administrator, Mahesh PU College, Mangalore organized all the events. Mr. Ananth Prabhu, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Mr. Steven Lawrence Fernandes, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, and Mr. Vasanth Kedige, Media Consultant, Aptra Technologies, coordinated SSTH events.

The competitions of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2014 were held at St. Aloysius Pre- University College, Mangalore. The Sahyadri chief co-ordinators for the program were Mr. Jaimon D. Quadros, Mr. Suhas, Mr. Vaishak N.L. and Mr. Ramakrishna D, Assistant Professors, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The program co-ordinator from St. Aloysius P U College was Ms. Ashwini, Lecturer, Department of Biology. The chief guest for the program was Prof. S. S. Balakrishna, Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering. The student volunteers were members of team dreamers.

The inaugural function was presided over by Smt. Rekha Alva, Vice Principal, St. Aloysius Pre- University College, Mangalore. In her inaugural address, Smt. Alva appreciated the efforts taken up by Sahyadri team for conducting an event of such magnitude. She also stressed on the growth that Sahyadri has shown in the past seven years and appreciated it for being one of the best institutions in Mangalore. Prof. Balakrishna then took over and addressed the students on how important projects and practical work form have become an integral part of education nowadays specially the engineering stream. He also gave insight about the in pure sciences and applied sciences which are a mainstream for science students. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Ashwini where she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and support rendered by the Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management in conducting the event. The occasion received an overwhelming response with close to 150 students participating in different events. In the valedictory program, prizes were given out by Ms. Ashwini and Mr. Jaimon D. Quadros.

The prize winners in the Essay writing were Nishal Nivya Rodrigues (Ist place), Ankith Jaison Saldanha (IInd place), Prajna Karanth (IIIrd place). Quiz competition: Nidarsh, Nakalunk, and Stephen (Ist place), Priscilla, Prathiksha, and Vybhav (IInd place), Tanisha S., Rushal Kamath, and Twinkle S. Das (IIIrd place). Poster/Model/Paper Presentation: M. Suhail R., Abhishek, Caron Fernandes, Ajay P., and Joel Harry (Ist place), Nishal N. Rodrigues, Shravya Shetty, Oshal D'souza, Shreenidhi, and Prajna Katranth P. (IInd place), Marita Preema, Zihana Afiya, and Shraddha (IIIrd place). Project Exhibition: Arnold, Akhilesh (Ist place), M. Suhail. R., Abhishek, Caron Fernandes, Ajay P., and Joel Harry (IInd place), Roshan, Anush, Dillon, Amogh, and Rizwi (IIIrd place).

Faculty Member Qualifies as State Refree in Powerlifting

Mr. Karthik Raj Kudroli, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration, has qualified as the State Refree in powerlifting, Karnataka Powerlifting Association. He is also invited as the refree and technical officer to render his services in the XXXVI Men , XIX Women Karnataka State Junior and Master Powerlifting Championships 2014 to be held at Bhadravathi, Shimoga District from 14th to 16th November 2014 organized by Shimoga District Powerlifting Association.

Sahyadri P. U. College: Zonal Level Competition

The Science Club of Sahyadri P. U. College hosted ‘Zonal Level Competition,’ as a part of “Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt - 2014.” Various activities like Paper Presentation Contest, Essay Contest, Science Model Contest and Quiz Contest were organized on this occasion.

Mr. Naveen S. A. Principal, Sahyadri P. U. College inaugurated the programme. Prof. Ananth Prabhu, Head, Sahyadri P. U. College along with Prof. Abdul Kareem, Prof. Steven Lawrence Fernandes, Prof. Praveen Kumar from the Electronics & Communication Department, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management were the Chief Guests on the occasion.

Prof. Abdul Kareem explained the objectives of conducting “Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt - 2014” and urged the students to explore the world of science, beyond text books and class room lectures.

On this occasion, Prof. Ananth Prabhu released “Reflections,” a compilation of the experiences of Sahyadri P. U. Students at the 6th Science Conclave held at IIIT-A in 2013-14.

Paper Presentation Contest on the topic “Nanotechnology and Nanoscience” was judged by Ms. Shruthi P. Bhat, Faculty, Chemistry Department, Yenepoya P. U. College, Mangaluru; Prof. Sharada Priyadarshini Rai, Faculty, Chemistry Department, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management and Ms. Shreya, ‘Team Dreamers’of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management.

Prof. Dr. Navin Bappalige, Faculty, Physics Department, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management; Prof. Sunil Kumar, Civil Engineering Department, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management and Dr. Tejaswini, Research Co-ordinator at Neuro Centre, Mangaluru were the judges for the Science Model Contest.

Mr. Karthik, Final year Mechanical Engineering student of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management conducted the Science Quiz Contest. The contests witnessed great response as good number of students participated in them. Ms. Shruthi, Faculty, Chemistry Department, Sahyadri P. U. College and Co-ordinator of Science Club provided valuable guidance to the contestants.

Sahyadri Athletic Team Overall Runners-up in VTU Athletic Meet

The Sahyadri Athletic Team won the Overall Runners-up trophy in the Girls’ section and Overall Third place in the Boys’ section at VTU’s 17th Inter-collegiate Athletic Meet 2014-15 held at Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum.
