Plenary Session held at Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt (SSTH 2019)

As part of the SSTH-2019, plenary sessions were held on 16th Nov’19. Here’s a summary of the same.
Dr. Archana Pillai Session 1: Social Entrepreneurship
Speaker: Dr. Archana Pillai, Resident Mentor, NSRCEL, IIM – Bangalore.
The plenary session on Social Entrepreneurship was an enlightening one. Dr Archana Pillai stressed on many aspects. In today’s times, social entrepreneurship is a revolution across the world. People from different walks of life are creating and implementing effective, innovative, and sustainable solutions to battle social and environmental challenges. These solutions include services and products for profit or as a non-profit initiative. She said there is no need of knowing Economics to get into this field. The key elements are to know the current affairs and market background.

Dr. Pillai went on to say that engineers have the capacity to think deeply and innovate providing perfect answers. There is no strong investment required. All you need to start this business is just an idea and upgrading your skills. In conclusion she said that it is more of innovation, adaptation and learning.

Dr. T V P ChowdrySession 2: Product Design
Speaker: Dr. T V P Chowdry, Senior Project Scientist – IISC, Bangalore
This session was taken up by Dr TVP Chowdry. He spoke on startups and business. This mainly involves different aspects. The first level is Pre incubation. In this level, there has to be focus on innovation. The reason being innovation leads to opportunity for growth. Teams need to be formed for proper implementation. Then there must be proof of concept to show the reason for start-up. After which you need to ponder over Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to start with full capacity. For start-ups minimum seed funding is necessary because small investment leads to greater profits.

The next step is Incubation. For this process the main aim has to be product focused and it has to be developed in a progressive manner. Main upgradation program has to be channelized. After which there has to be a methodology for selling these products to the customers. There also should be room for product testing and usage. This will increase profits and a proper business model has to be implemented knowing the needs of the company as well as customers in focus.

After all of this is done we can move on to the third step of Acceleration. Here, the aim is expansion and business focused. There have to be different departments which do determine the future of the company, mainly finance, HR and marketing, operations. This will help innovation of products through the engineering field.

He went on to say all this must build up customer obsession which will help scale up business. It must not be a project for the mere sake of a start-up. It should create a need for this product. For which we need to bring it to a real business model. This will generate more income and also help in creation of jobs. This in turn needs proper planning for market expansion.

Dr Chowdry concluded by saying if you have determination for innovative rulership, surely success in the long run would turn into a reality.
