GANDHI JAYANTHI

Gandhi Jayanthi celebrates the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi popularly known as the Mahatma Gandhi. Born on 2 October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat, he is known for his invaluable contribution to India's freedom struggle. His principles of truth, non-violence, and honesty are unforgettable. MahatmaGandhi was interested in everything that concerns the individual or society. He is best known as the political leader who evolved the new technique of "Satyagraha". His fight against untouchability and the notions of superiority and inferiority by birth is also well known. His fight for justice began during his stay in Africa where he fought for the rights of the native people. He was the person behind the Satyagraha Ashram in Ahmedabad, and the Sabarmati Ashram, which became a platform for introducing long-needed social reforms such as 'Harijan' welfare, small-scale industries, self-reliance, and the rehabilitation of lepers. Gandhiji was a multi-faceted moral and spiritual messiah. He tirelessly endeavored to make people understand that the basic happiness of life is to be happy with whatever one has. His philosophies and morals of life, keep him alive in our minds forever.

The United Nations General Assembly announced, on 15 June 2007, that it adopted a resolution which declared that the second of October will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.
