Sahyadri Faculty Participate in the Symposium ‘Prajna ‘15

Prajna – A symposium for college faculty on the theme, ‘Reflections on Ancient, Contemporary & New-Gen Education’ was organized by the Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru.

The symposium was organized to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s historic speech delivered by him at the World Parliament of Religions on 11th September 1893, Chicago.

In his keynote address, Swami Jitakamananda, Adhyaksha, Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru emphasised the wise saying – The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book. He said that in the Gurukula system, the purpose of education was the opening of the heart, sharpening of the intellect and instilling discriminative wisdom into the students that would guide them through the vicissitudes of life. Awakening of Prajna was the goal of education and the art of bread-winning was only a byproduct. But today, he said that, earning has become more important than learning, because of which, several problems are plaguing our society.

The Inaugural address was by His Excellency Sri Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, Honorable Governor of Karnataka. He spoke on the teachings of Swami Vivekananada and reiterated the role of a Guru. He said that a mother is the first teacher and she educates the child with the best of both, knowledge and culture. He emphasized the role of teachers as lamps lighting up several lamps without losing their light. He asked the lady teachers to educate the students with knowledge and sanskruthi as they encompass all the great virtues of love, patience, perseverance and truth which are essential for the building of one’s character.

The resource persons of the symposium were Padmabhushan Dr. B.M. Hegde, Indian medical scientist, educationist, author and former Vice Chancellor of the Manipal University. He spoke on Ancient wisdom & Modern Science. Swami Atmapriyanandaji, Vice Chancellor of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University and Member of the Central Advisory Board of Education, spoke on Changing and Changeless trends in education in the ancient and modern times. Swami Sarvathanandaji, Adhyaksha of Ramakrishna Ashrama, Rajkot discussed on the Pedagogy- Past, Present and future and Prof. K. Raghothama Rao, Director of MANAS Centre for Training & Development, Director of Human Networking Academy and Chairman of Seek Foundation interacted on the Active Learning Strategies.

The guests of Honor were Dr. N. Vinay Hegde, Vice Chancellor, Nitte University and Prof. Dr. K. Byrappa, Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University. Two faculty members from Sahyadri college of Engineering & Management participated in the symposium.
