Dr. Niraj Joshi Receives DST-SERB-EMR Project Funding of INR 55.89 Lakhs

Dr. Niraj Joshi has received the prestigious DST-SERB-EMR research project fund of INR 55.89 lakhs for the project "Design, Fabrication and Characterization of Whispering Gallery Mode (WGM) resonators in Planar Waveguides for Detection of Bio- Molecules Using Terahertz Radiation". Recently DST-SERB-EMR has released Rs. 37.5 Lakhs to setup THz based bio-molecular detection laboratory.

Dr. Niraj Joshi, Center of Excellence in Nanoscience and Technology (CENT), SCEM, is the principal investigator and Prof. S. Prabhu, TIFR, Prof. A. Gopal, TIFR and Prof. S.Dattagupta, IITB are the co-investigators of this project. This project was submitted under the guidance of Prof. Richard Pinto, Director-CENT. The project aims to integrate low loss THz waveguides and WGM resonators with high Q factors suitable for detector applications in the area of biosensors/ biophotonics. THz based sensors are among the latest developments in single molecular detection in the area of bio-medical engineering and detection of explosives. Among the many possible applications of these sensors early detection of cancer (molecular level) is one.

Prof. Shriganesh Prabhu and Prof. Achanta Venu Gopal, TIFR FOTON group are leading experts in the field of plasmonics. The Fundamental Optics, Terahertz and Optical Nanostructures (FOTON) group at Department of Condensed Matter Physics & Material Science, TIFR has made significant contributions in the terahertz domain during last decade. Prof. Siddhartha Dattgupta, EE Department, IITB, has expertise in tools for processing, characterization and computation as part of the IIT Bombay Nano Fabrication Facility (IITB-NF). He also has expertise in the applications of simulation softwares and in process tools such as, nano- structure generation set-up.

The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) under Department of Science & Technology (DST), is a statutory body established through an Act of Parliament viz. the Science and Engineering Research Board Act, 2008. The board funds basic research in emerging areas of Science & Engineering. Individual centric competitive mode of funding will be provided under the Extra Mural Research (EMR). The proposal will be funded if it has novelty and the investigator has the competence to execute the project.

Logical Indian-Jugaad Club Members Put up a Sale

The members of the Logical Indian- Jugaad Club put up a sale in the campus. All the items were hand made from day-to-day waste. The sale was inaugurated by Mr. Srinivas Bhat, HR, Diya Systems. The students were appreciated for their creativity and the idea of having a sale by the Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary and Mr. Srinivas Bhat, HR, Diya Systems. Prof Balakrishna S. S., Vice Principal, Prof Rashmi Bhandary, HOD, Placement, Dr. Molly S. Chaudhuri, HOD, Training Mr. Rakshith Shetty, Club Coordinator and Dr. Umashankar, Dean Academic were present and appreciated the work done by the club members. Money collected from the sale will go to a social cause.

Student Presents Paper at International Seminar

Mr. Rakhesh who is interning at DTlabz, presented a paper titled "Readying Newborns to hear and speak for Eradication of Speech impairment from the face of the planet Earth" in the international seminar on `Approaches in Rehabilitation Research & Practices’ held at Holy Cross College, Tiruchinapalli. Mr. Rakhesh was guided by Prof. B. Narayana Karkera, Research Director of the college.

World Health Day Observed in the Campus

“There is no alternative for Blood”. Keeping this quote, the Department of Computer Applications and the Department of Business Administration observed World Health Day in the Campus by organizing a Blood Donation Camp in association with KMC Mangalore and Website hosting events. Dr Vishal Samartha, Director, Department of MBA, welcomed the guest, faculty members and students to the function. Dr. M. Annayya Kulal, Chief Medical Officer & Professor, Srinivas Group of Educational Institutes, Mangalore, inaugurated the Blood Donation Camp and emphasized the significance of donating blood. Dr. Annayya Kulal also inaugurated a website developed by MCA students for promoting blood donation. Chief Guest, Dr Deepa Adiga, Blood Bank Officer, KMC Mangalore presented the statistics of blood donation. Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Principal, SCEM, gave the presidential remarks. The function formally ended with the vote of thanks from Prof. J. V. Gorabal, HoD Department of MCA, SCEM. Around 225 units of blood were collected from students and faculty members.

MBA Students on Industrial Visit to Mumbai

143 first year MBA students along with 3 faculty members, Mr. Chris and Mr. Omprasad, Tour Managers, Purple Squirrel Eduventures Pvt Ltd accompanied the team to Mumbai on a four-day exposure visit to various companies.

The team visited National Stock Exchange, Mumbai and were addressed by Mr. Gurudatta Dhanokar, Director, SME Value Advisors who explained the background of NSE, introduction to various departments within the NSE, and a simplified overview of capital markets, A live demo of trading or live terminal showing how the markets function, broader outlook of career options in capital markets and about NCFM and NCCMP certification programs. The students had an interactive session with the resource person.

The team visited Parle Products, India’s largest manufacturer of biscuits, in Mumbai. The students were taken through a presentation by the Mr. Kishore Shilke, Head HR, about the HR practices followed by the company. The company followed a unique HR practice of visiting the employees’ houses and understanding their problems and also letting the employees’ families know about the benefits of working for Parle which has actually led to more motivated employees being part of Parle family.

The team then visited the unit of Bisleri International Pvt Ltd. Bisleri is a household name that pioneered the concept of mineral water in India bottled with its distinct green label. Mr. Amin Shaikh, Assistant Manager-Plant Operations and his team briefed about the plant and explained about the production process. The students got to know the importance of the need for maintaining hygiene in the plant during the process and also learnt about the quality checks that were taking place.

Students visited prominent places of Mumbai during sightseeing and then returned to Mangalore. Purple Squirrel Eduventures, the SINE, IIT Bombay incubated company facilitated the industry exposure program.

Financial assistance to Sahyadri Team

Sahyadri Group of Institutions, Employees and Students multipurpose cooperative Society, located at the campus has extended the financial assistance of rupees ten thousand each, to Team Hawk, Sahyadri Motor Sports Team and the Team Formula in order to encourage the students to excel in academic diversified activities.

Mr. Jagannatha Chowta, President of the society, handed over the cheques and wished the Teams every success in the future.

Alumni interacts at Sahyadri

Mr. Karthik Bhat, software developer Unicourt India, alumnus of SCEM, 2015 batch interacted with students of computer science engineering . In this interactive session he stressed on the importance of basic knowledge of computer programming. He also shared his experience in the IT field and expressed the importance of Programming on part of IT Engineers.

Ms. Lezvita, alumna of SCEM, 2015 batch interacted with students of computer science engineering. She explained the roadmap towards higher education and motivated students to take up higher studies and gave career guidance to be chosen after graduation.

MBA Student Creates New Meet Record (NMR) in Discuss Throw

Vikhyath VS from 1st year MBA secured 1st place with New Meet Record (NMR) in Discuss Throw by throwing 38.32 meters in the 18th VTU Inter-Collegiate Athletic Meet 2015-16 which was held at Sir. M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, Bengaluru. He bested the record created in the year 2009.

Faculty Member Trains Officers of Mangaluru Customs Commissionerate

Mr. Duddela Sai Prashanth, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering was invited as a resource person to train the officers & staff of Mangaluru Customs Commissionerate on computer applications. The officers of the Commissionerate headed by Deputy Commissioner Mr. Praveen applauded the efforts of Mr. Duddela Sai Prashanth.

Youth Empowerment & Motivation Programme

An inspirational programme on Youth Empowerment & Motivation was held in Sahyadri Campus. Swami Jitakamanandaji, Adhyaksha, Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru along with Swami Nirbhayananda Saraswathi, President, Ramakrishna Vivekananda Ashrams in Gadag and Bijapur, and Mr. Vinod Das, Director, Swami Vivekananda Integrated Rural Development Centre, Yaragatti, Belagavi were the invitees for this programme.

Swami Nirbhayananda Saraswathi, in his highly motivating lecture, explained that inspiration is the greatest drive in our life. Inspiration is an alarm to wake up; it is an inner-journey by ourself. He explained the teaching techniques, including description of how we need to teach and the justifications for our strategies to constitute our personal philosophy of teaching. Swamiji gave numerous examples to illustrate the knowledge strength of Indians in the fields of science and mathematics. He said that Indians fail to take risk in their life. He reminded the best quote of Swami Vivekananda, “Have faith in yourself”. He urged the students to build capacity to become future entrepreneurs. Swamiji conveyed the important message that “Every individual should have a clear goal” and to arise, awake and stop not till they achieve it.

Swami Jitakamanandaji has composed many Hindi and Marathi songs on Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda and is also the author of several books in English and Marathi.

Swami Nirbhayananda Saraswathi, is the chief editor of a bi-monthly magazine in Kannada called “Viveka Deepthi” which caters to moral and spiritual needs of the society especially youth. He is a powerful speaker who has addressed youths, teachers, professors, professionals and made a powerful influence on them.

Abishek Clifford on Rescue from the Evils of Society

A session on Moral Awareness Programme and Cyber Ethics was conducted by Mr. Abishek Clifford, CEO, “Rescue” Research and Training Charity Trust.

Mr. Abishek is a statistics and ethics lecturer from London, who started Rescue NGO, in Mysore, India, ten years ago. They have conducted moral awareness programs in more than 100 colleges to about 50,000 students each year. More than 200 newspaper articles have published Rescue’s research on problems amongst youth today. They stress on the issues of youth abortions and human trafficking in India. He discussed on moral issues focusing on the destructive nature of immorality, AIDS, the value of the life of a baby (before birth), the flood of pornography, human trafficking and the misuse of mobile and Internet. He addressed many social problems and requested students to uphold the dignity of our nation and to have moral accountability.

Mr. Abishek Clifford, interacted with II and III year students, regarding misuse of Internet content which affects our future generation. He said that life is an exam and one has to face it bravely. He requested the students to give their feedback on his Facebook page by liking Rescue108. Free Internet filter and parental control software can be downloaded from Google: K9 / Parental software.
