Board of Apprentice Training Fair gets Underway in the Campus.

Board of Apprenticeship Training (Sr), Chennai and & Directorate of Technical Education, Bangalore, jointly with Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangalore, organised an Apprenticeship-Cum-Job Fair for passed out 2012, 2013 and 2014 Engineering graduates and diploma holders in all branches of Engineering. In the inaugural session held in the College, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, the Chairman addressing the gathering said that students should make use of this opportunity to get practical knowledge rather than looking at the salary package.

Twenty-five leading industries from the private and public sector such as, Wipro infrastructure Ltd., Bharat Earth Movers Ltd., Bangalore, BHEL, Titan Industries Automobile, MESCOM Automobile, Canara Engineering Works, BASF, Hindustan Unilever Limited, and MRPL to name a few, participated in the fair. Around 700 candidates in an around the Mangalore region attended the fair.

On the eve of the Apprentice-cum-Job Fair, Mr. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Director, Board of Apprentice Training (BOAT), Chennai, visited the Campus to brief about the Apprentice-cum-Job Fair. He conducted a training programme for the faculty members, students, and the Training & Placement Officers of the various colleges in and around the Mangalore region. During his training session, he gave a comprehensive view of the role of apprentice training in solving the needs of the business establishments. Through various presentations, he gave in detail, how BOAT; a part of MHRD, Govt. of India, facilitates apprentice training for candidates, industry and institution. Emphasis is given for passed out 2012, 2013 and 2014 Engineering graduates and diploma holders in all branches of Engineering.

Training & Placement Officers from SDIT, Srinivas Institute of Technology, Srinivas School of Engineering, Canara Engineering College, Karavali Institue of Technology, Moodlakatte Institute of Technology were present. Mr. K. L. Vinod, South Western Railways Central Workshops, Mysore, Mr. Roshan E. F. of Spicer India Ltd., Mr. Preethesh K., Human Resources and Mr. Sangamesh M. Annigeri, Training Officer, Wipro Infrastructure Ltd., Bangalore, were also present. Prof. M. N. Nayak, Administrator & Dean-Placements, Prof. Rashmi Bhandary, Head-Training & Placement, Ms. Raksha, Assistant Placement Officer, Mrs. Molly Chauduri, Head-Training, faculty members, and students of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management attended the training session by BOAT.

Through BOAT, one-year apprenticeship training is given with leading public and private sector organizations registered with BOAT at the end of which the candidate will receive a Government of India certification. The user-friendly portal of BOAT which is www.boat-srp.com can be accessed by industry, institutions and candidates to register themselves with BOAT which is free of cost.

SPACE Student Association Inaugurated

Pupils Association of Civil Engineering (SPACE) held its inaugural function for the academic year 2014-15 in the Campus. Mr. Anand Kumar S. K., Managing Director, Master Plannery, Puttur, was the Chief Guest. In his motivational speech, he gave a call to the students to bring out their potential in the upcoming phase of life and spoke on how practical knowledge is more important in life. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal appreciated the creativity of the students on the occasion. Students showcased their talents in the cultural programme after the inauguration.

Students Technical Association of Information Science and Engineering (STAISE) Inaugurated

Technical Association of Information Science and Engineering (STAISE) held its inaugural function for the academic year 2014-15. Prof. Mithra K., HoD, Department of Mathematics was the Chief Guest. In her motivational, speech she mentioned about teamwork and how all the students should associate with each other to succeed in their work. Prof. Umashankar B. S., Dean-Academic, addressed the students on how to be human before becoming engineers. Dr. Manu A. P., HoD, briefed about the events which will be held under STAISE during the academic year. Students showcased their talents in a cultural programme after the inauguration.

Interdisciplinary Research/Publication/Conference Group meets to discuss activities for the academic year

A meeting of the interdisciplinary Research/Publication/Conference group was held in the Campus. The meeting was presided over by Prof. Umashankar B. S., Dean-Academic and Prof. M. N. Nayak, Administrator and Dean-Placements. Mr. Steven Lawrence Fernandes, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering briefed about the club activities for the academic year 2014-15. Ms. Saranyaraj, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, explained the structure of the committee and various coordinators were selected. Induction Programme for MBA Freshers

The four-day Induction Programme for the batch of 2014-16 MBA students was held in the campus. Dr. Muralidhar, Vice President, HR Kirloskar Electricals, Bangalore, was the chief guest. In his address, Dr. Muralidhar highlighted the need for the structure, strategy system, right quality, right price and right delivery in an organization. He also discussed the topics like ‘Challenges of Management’, ‘Developing Human Capital’ and ‘How to respond to the Market’. He gave a call to the students to live in present and to find contemporary solutions for the contemporary problems.

Dr. Umesh. M. Bhushi, Principal, shared his views on how to make MBA students’ life more productive and enjoyable. He said that MBA is all about experiencing life. He advised the students to be empathetic, consistent and to be positive. He quoted J.F. Kennedy and gave a call to the students to introspect everyday and emphasized on self respect. Dr. A. P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration, presented the current scenario of the MBA programme in India and highlighted the special features of the MBA curriculum for the year. He introduced the management education, its growth and the faculty members of the Department of Business Administration. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Associate Professor, Department of Business Administration, briefed about the rules and regulations of the college.

The day two of the Induction Programme for the MBA freshers, commenced with the session on ‘Interpersonal Skills’. Mr. Dheeraj Shetty, Head-HR, JBF Petrochemicals, Mangalore, through experiential learning helped the students to understand various facts of interpersonal relation and dynamics of team building. Mr. Vilas Nayak, CEO, Hanuman Transport, Udupi trained the students on ‘Practices of Management’ ‘Interactions with Industries’ and how to make learning fruitful during two years of study. The post lunch session was engaged by Mr. Ramani Venkat, Director, Varnaz Solutions, Bangalore, who conducted a session on ‘Importance of Business Communication through Learning Activities’.

The third day of the Induction Programme for the MBA freshers commenced with the session on ‘Personality Development for Professional Excellence.’ Mr. Rakshith Shetty, Marketing In charge India, Refonte Technologies & Consulting, Mangalore, gave a brief introduction about personality development and he also discussed the importance of management education in development of personality. Mrs. Rashmi Bhandary, Head-Placements, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management trained the students on ‘Different Aspects of Interviews and the Importance of each Aspect.’ The post lunch session was engaged by Prof. Radhakrishna, MGM College, Udupi, who conducted a session on ‘Self-Discovery & Development’.

The fourth day saw the freshers going out on an industrial visit. They visited JK Plywoods, BASF, and Deccan Plastics in Mangalore. The visit enabled students to understand the practical work scenario of industries.


                  

Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi becomes Nominee of VTU to the Academic Council of NMAMIT, Nitte

As per the direction of the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of VTU, Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, has been nominated as the nominee of Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, to the `Academic Council’ of NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte. It is a great honour for Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management.

Sahyadrians Win Second Place in Verbattle Senior 2014


A team comprising of Karthik Ramakrishnan, Semester V and Veer Jain, Semester VII, Mechanical Engineering, have won the second place winning a cash prize of Rs. 20,000/- in Verbattle Senior 2014, state level debate competition held in Bangalore. Around 150 teams participated in the competition. A total of six teams of the college participated in the state level competition.

Monsoon Trophy – Sahyadri Premier League (SPL) Inter-collegiate Football Tournament gets off to a Flying Start

Vandana Shanbag, International Athlete and Arjuna Awardee inaugurated the Monsoon Trophy – Sahyadri Premier League (SPL) Inter-collegiate football tournament in the Campus. She appreciated the efforts made by MBA students of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management to tap sports talent among the graduates and how colleges can contribute to the development of sports and games during their course of study. Mr. Dayanand Mada, President, Mangalore Physical Teachers’ Association was present as the Guest of Honour. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management presided over the inaugural function. Dr A. P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration, welcomed the gathering and Mr. Prakyath Bhandary, Chairman –SPL proposed the Vote of Thanks. Ms. Juhi, Director, SPL, provided details of the inter-collegiate football tournament.

Students running their own business while at study in the college/university can be a great way to make some extra cash and to develop entrepreneurial skills, much-valued in the increasingly competitive graduate job market. In this context, students of Masters of Business Administration (MBA) started Sahyadri Premier League (SPL). SPL is a real-time company owned and managed by students of MBA and functions on the lines of Indian Premier League (IPL) which is the biggest marketing success stories in the present day business world. To tap the sports talent among the graduates, SPL conducts state level competitions in popular games like cricket and football. Last year, SPL successfully conducted an inter-collegiate cricket match. Football matches are conducted on a knock-out basis for thirty-four undergraduate college teams. The winning team will get a cash prize of Rs. 35,000 and a trophy.

One-Day International Workshop held on Baja SAEINDIA-2015

Team ARIONS of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management comprising of Gautham Nayak, Nishanth, Gokul Nair, Amod Kamat, Jaison Crasta, Akhil Shaju, Sachin Kumar Nair, Jerin David Varghese, Fenil Mehta, Madhukeshwara B. and faculty advisor Prof. Girish Hegde of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for Team Arions, took part in the Baja SAEIndia one-day International Workshop and greatly benefitted by it.

To upgrade the knowledge and competencies of the Indian teams, Baja SAEIndia organised a one-day International Workshop at VIT, Vellore. Dr. Dale Alan Wilson, and Dr. Satish Mahajan, Faculty Advisors from the Tennessee Tech University [TTU], USA, along with nine BAJA team members of TTU who are twelve-time winners of BAJA SAE International, explained about team hierarchy, goal setting, design process, fabrication and preparation for the competition. They provided key points to the participants on how to prepare and win the BAJA event. They also presented a live demonstration of their 2013 winning vehicle.

The team from Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management interacted with the TTU professors and team regarding the design of the car and got some inputs for not just improving the design but also on management of the team.

FDP on “Virtual Instrumentation Using LabVIEW”


The Faculty Development Programme on “Virtual Instrumentation Using LabVIEW” organized by the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering in association with the Department of Project and Funding was inaugurated by Dr. V. I. George, Professor, MIT, Manipal. Dr. Ranganathiah, Director-Research, presided over the function. The sessions were handled by Prof. Bipin Krishna, MIT, Manipal and Mr. Shivakumar, Cranes Software.
