Mr. Dinesh K. Shetty Visits Sahyadri

Mr. Dinesh K. Shetty, Chairman, Standing Committee for Public Health, Education and Social Justice, City Corporation, Davangere, accompanied with Mr. R. S. Singh, Proprietor, R. S. Singh & Co. visited the Campus. Mr. Jagannath Chowta and Mr. Devadas Hegde, Trustees, Prof. M. N. Nayak, Administrator, Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal and Mr. Vikyath Rai, SWO, welcomed the guests. They were taken around the College campus. Mr. Dinesh K. Shetty showed his appreciation by saying that within seven years Mr. Manjunath Bhandary has created a very good institution in this region and was very happy to see the growth and infrastructure in the Campus.

Sowmya J. with 97.60% has topped the Sahyadri College in the MCA, Semester VI Examination of 2013-14 held by VTU. Arpitha K. M. obtained the second position in the college with 96.40% while Preethika Jain with 95.20% stands third. All forty-nine students who sat for the examination secured a first class with distinction with a one hundred percentage score.

The VTU results of Semester IV of MBA saw an impressive percentage score in the recently held examinations in June/July 2014. Mr. Prajwal Shetty A. was ranked the highest in the college with 79.40%, followed by Ms. Smitha J. Shetty with 75.40% and Ms. Navyashree P. Shetty with 74.60%. Forty students obtained a first class with distinction, one hundred and eight students a first class, and two students obtained a second class, bringing the overall percentage score to 87.27%.

SPL Football Monsoon Trophy 2014

This season, Sahyadri Premier League (SPL) organized a State level inter-collegiate football tournament “Monsoon Trophy -2014” in Sahyadri college grounds. The Tournament was inaugurated by Arjuna Awardee, Ms. Vandana Shanbag. Football matches were conducted on a knock out basis for 32 teams. On completion of the first two rounds of matches, 8 teams made it to the super eight. The final was played between Rosario College and Milagres College, Mangalore. The prestigious SPL trophy was won by Milagres College and Rosario College, Mangalore, are the Runners-up. Mr. Sheikh Shahid of Milagres First Grade College, Mangalore, is awarded as best goal keeper and Mr. Sheikh Mohammed Jasim is awarded as the winner of Golden Boot.

The prize distribution ceremony of SPL Season 2-Football Monsoon Trophy 2014 was held in the Campus. Mr. Venkatesh, Regional Manager, The Hindu and Mr. Mahesh Prabhu, Director, Business World, were the guests on the occasion. They congratulated the participants and organisers of SPL Season 2- Monsoon Trophy 2014. The chief guest for the function Mr. Venkatesh, Regional General Manager; ‘The Hindu’ opined that the future superstars of football will emerge from SPL and spoke about the importance of sports and encouragement of rural sports and sports other than cricket. Mr. Mahesh Prabhu, Director, Business world congratulated the winning teams.

Students of Masters of Business Administration (MBA) had started Sahyadri premier League (SPL). SPL is a real time Company owned and managed by students of MBA and functions like IPL which is the biggest marketing success stories in the present day business world.

250 Candidates benefit from BOAT Drive

In the recently held Board of Apprentice Training (BOAT) drive in the Campus, 17 companies participated and around 250 candidates have got the opportunity of apprenticeship. More than 800 candidates across Karnataka participated in the process.

Through BOAT, one-year apprenticeship training is given with leading public and private sector organizations registered with BOAT at the end of which the candidate will receive a Government of India certification. The user-friendly portal of BOAT which is www.boat-srp.com can be accessed by industry, institutions and candidates to register themselves with BOAT which is free of cost.

Inauguration of CLOUDS for the Academic Year 2014-15

Various activities for the academic year 2014-15 of CLOUDS (Computer Legends of the Unified Department @ Sahyadri); an association of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering was inaugurated by Dr. Antony P. J., Director, PG Studies, KVG College of Engineering, Sullia.

Mr. Sudheer Shetty, HoD and the President of CLOUDS, welcomed the Chief Guest, the staff, and the second year students of the department. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, the Principal, in his presidential address, appreciated the association for all its efforts. Mr. Umashankar B. S., Dean-Academic was present during the function. Ms. Kirthi Prasad, General Secretary of the Association, gave an overview of the activities of the Association for the year 2013-14 and the activities planned for the current academic year.

On the occasion, Dr. Antony P. J., the Chief Guest, delivered a technical talk on, “Natural Language Processing." He shared his immense knowledge about Linguistic Computation and its Applications. He gave a glimpse of the scope and advancements in this field.

The staff co-ordinator, Mrs. Mehanaz Begum, read out the names of the VTU toppers of all semesters of CSE and M.Tech.(CSE) and they were honored on this occasion with a certificate and a gift voucher by the Chief Guest. Mr. Gautham J. Shetty, the Vice-President of CLOUDS, proposed the Vote of Thanks.

Mr. Sachin Ganesh, Semester V and Mr. Pratheek Shetty, Semester III were felicitated for the preparation of the association logo and the theme song, respectively. On the occasion, the new CLOUD app was introduced to all.

Various technical and non-technical events like Treasure Hunt, Cooking without Fire, and variety programmes by students and staff were carried out in the afternoon session where they were given an opportunity to showcase their talents.

ICONS Student Association Inaugurated and Freshers Day Celebrated

Innovative, Creative, Objective, Network of Sahyadri (ICONS); the student association of the Department of Master of Computer Applications was inaugurated and freshers day was celebrated by the second year and the third year MCA students.

Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, and Prof. Umashanker B. S., Dean - Academic inaugurated the formal function. Words of wisdom were given by the Principal and the Dean - Academic. Prof. J. V. Gorabal, HOD, welcomed all the first year students to the department of MCA. A President, Vice-President, Secretary, General Secretary, Finance officer and a Cultural Coordinator were appointed by the ICONS Association for the academic year 2014-15.

Merit holders of Semester II and Semester IV were awarded with a Certificate of Excellence. Mr. Akshith Samani, President of ICONS presented the Vote of Thanks. The informal function began with the introduction of the freshers followed by games. A cultural programme was held on the occasion and refreshments were served.

Induction Programme for MBA Freshers

Mr. Prakash Iyer, Team Lead, Mr. John and Mr. Varma, Senior SAP Consultants of Maventic, Bangalore, conducted a pool campus recruitment drive for the MCA, and M.Tech. 2015 pass outs. 150 candidates from NMAMIT, Nitte, St. Joseph Engineering College and Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management took part in the recruitment process. Out of the eleven candidates shortlisted for the next round of interview, two students are from Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management.

SMSA Inauguration

Sahyadri Management Students Association (SMSA) was inaugurated by Mr. P. J. Rai, Head HR, Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF). He spoke about the importance of positive personality and asked the students to make use of the opportunities. He also said that success is associated with sense of satisfaction. Dr. A. P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration, addressed the students on importance of student associations. Mr. Ashwin Kollaje, President, SMSA, briefed about the events to be organised during the academic year. The function was followed by management and cultural activities.

Mother-Daughter Duo in Bharathanatyam Concert

A Bharatanatyam concert by Kalaimaamai Rama Vaidyanathan and her daughter Dakshina Vaidyanathan was held in the Campus. It was organised by the Department of Art & Culture. The mother-daughter duo was accompanied by Vocalist, Kuppusawamy Venkateswara, Mridangaist, Arun Kumar, and Violinst, Viju Shivanand.

Kalaimaamai Rama Vaidyanathan is a leading exponent of Bharatanatyam, a popular classical dance form of India. She is one of the most sought after artistes of her generation having carved a name for herself in the world of Bharatanatyam. She has trained intensively under the legendary dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy and the renowned Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan. Everyone who has seen Rama perform is struck by her unique thought process and fresh approach to dance. While deeply routed in tradition, she has evolved her own individual style without forsaking the core principles of Bharatanatyam. A performing career spanning more than 25 years, Rama is a top graded artiste with Doordarshan; the National Television Channel and is in the outstanding category of artistes with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Sahyadri Ranked Seventh in the VTU Inter-Collegiate Rest-of-Bangalore Zone Chess Tournament

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management has been ranked 7th out of 35 colleges in the VTU level Rest-of-Bangalore Zone Chess Tournament held at VTU Regional Office, Mysore. Safdar Hussian of Semester V, Civil Engineering has won First Place in Board Three.

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management has been ranked 14th in the VTU Inter-Zone Chess Tournament held at Cambridge IT, Bangalore. Mr. Safdar Hussian of Semester V, Civil Engineering, has won Third Place in Board Three.

Offshore Project: Prelude Meeting Held in the Campus

A preliminary meet of HODs and research coordinators was held in the boardroom to prepare for the meeting to discuss the offshore project with the District Commissioner at his office in Mangalore tomorrow. Prof. Emeritus B. N. Karkera gave a detailed presentation on the project after which the floor was thrown open for discussions. Various ideas and views on the proposed scenario were discussed. The meeting was presided over by Prof. Umashankar B. S., Dean-Academic and Prof. M. N. Nayak, Administrator and Dean-Placements.

The team Verbattle in ‘Sakhi Samara’ on Women’s Equality Day

“Manthana” (Our Walk towards Change) an association of likeminded Sahyadrians in association with Oratocrats club of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Adyar, Mangalore, on the occasion of Women’s Equality Day conducted ‘Sakhi Samara’ : A debate for HER, Programme in the Campus.

With an honest effort to motivate the freshers, the team verbattle joined its hands with ‘Manthana’ and organized a debate session. The statements for the debate were ‘Girls need not be protected’, ‘Women are not to be blamed for rapes’ ‘Feminism is not relevant today’, and ‘Girls spoil boys’. Dr. Molly Choudhuri, Head, Department of Training was the staff moderator and Mr. Karthik Ramakrishnan, Semester V, Department of Mechanical Engineering was the student moderator for the debate session. The participants were Krithika K., Prajwal S. Chandra, Sheetal P. N., Neha K. Dutt, Hegde Vignesh, Bhavik Das, Gautham J. Shetty, and Ramya N. Mrs. Shreelatha, A.A.O speaking about women equality, she told the difference between gender and sex and gave a call to be the human beings and not to discriminate between boys and girls. Prof. M. N. Nayak, Administrator and Dean-Placements appreciated the participants, moderators, viewers and organizers for the success of the programme.

Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, in his presidential speech appreciated the team and women on the earth and said no man can match the power of woman. He gave a call to the students to be humble always. He felicitated Veer Jain and Karthik Ramakrishnan for their victory in Verbattle Senior - 2014. HODs, faculty members and non-teaching staff were present on the occasion.

Mr. Navin N. Bappalige Successfully Defends his Research Thesis

Mr. Navin N. Bappalige, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, , has successfully defended his research thesis titled, `Comparative Study of Important Physical Properties of New Organic Single Crystals’, for his doctoral degree, under Dr. Y. Narayan, Professor, Department of Physics, Mangalore University.

Mr. Navin N. Bappalige has completed his B.Sc. from Mangalore University, M.Sc., (Physics) from Mangalore University, M. S. (Counseling & Psychotherapy) from IPMS, Mumbai. His areas of specialization are Electronics & Non linear optics and Physics. With sixteen years of experience in various capacities in various degree colleges, he has to his credit many publications in national and international journals and has presented several research papers in national conferences. He has coordinated many national level conferences and has attended many faculty development programs and workshops.

Faculty Members Presents Paper in National Conference

Mrs. Bharathi K., Librarian, has presented a paper entitled Digital Library: An Overview in the UGC sponsored National Level Conference on Libraries and Librarianship in Transition: Challenges and Opportunities LIBTRANS 2014 (in Association with Karnataka State College Librarians' Association, Bangalore and Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Library Association, Mangalore) held at Besant Evening College, Mangalore.

Ms. Shwetha K., Librarian, Department of Central Library, presented a paper titled "Information Literacy and Higher Education Competency Standards" in the two-day National Level Conference on `Information Literacy and Higher Education Competency Standards "LIBTRANS 2014”, organized by Besant Evening College, Mangalore in collaboration with Karnataka State College Librarians' Association and Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Library Association, Mangalore.

Chief Guest

Mrs. Divya Prabhu, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration was invited as the Chief Guest to inaugurate the PG Commerce Association for the year 2014-15 of SVS College, Bantwal. In her inaugural address, she asked the students to stay focused in life and to "Do what they love and love what they do." She also said that in today's competitive world, for any industry to flourish, satisfying the customer is the mantra. After the inaugural function, Mrs. Divya Prabhu delivered a session on "Employability Skills" for the first year and second year M.Com. students of the college. The session was highly appreciated.

Faculty Members Invited to Deliver Guest Lectures

Prof. Raghavendra Prabhu, Assistant Professor-SG and Mr. Lokesh, Assistant Professor-SG of the Department of Business Administration were invited to deliver a guest lecture on `Personality for Good Career’ for final year B.Com. and BBM students of SVS College, Bantwal. On this occasion, the faculty donated to the mid-day meal scheme meant for below poverty line students as CSR activity.

The Joy of Giving & Sharing

The students and staff of the Department of Business Administration visited Bhagini Samaj an orphanage at Jeppu, Mangalore and contributed liberally their might and money to the orphans. The kids were in the age group of infants to 12 years. They were provided with school wearing black shoes, socks, a thermos flask, bath towels, tooth brushes, rice and all other grocery items required for a month for forty-three children. The students spent time with the kids, gave performances and enjoyed the joy of giving and sharing.
