BOAT & DTE in collaboration with Sahyadri organize an Apprenticeship Fair BOAT & DTE in collaboration with Sahyadri organize an Apprenticeship Fair Board of Apprenticeship Training (SR), Chennai & Directorate of Technical Education, Bengaluru in collaboration with Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management organized an Apprenticeship Fair for Engineering Graduates/Diploma/General Graduates in Sahyadri Campus which saw participation from Eight Hundred students of Karnataka. Mr. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Director, BOAT; Mr. Mohamed Ansar, Joint Director, Directorate of Technical Education, Bengaluru were the guests for the Inaugural Ceremony along with Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation.

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, while addressing the gathering urged the students to develop interest, commitment, involvement & discipline in the job they are assigned. He also emphasized on the growing need for SMART Skills and encouraged them to work on it. He appreciated the Government of India for providing opportunities to students through Apprenticeship Training. He stressed on the importance of initial 3 to 5 years in building a strong foundation through learning. He brought to light the recent trend in downfall of students opting for mechanical engineering & how this would impact the core mechanical based companies.

Mr. Suresh Kumar shared the process of registering under BOAT. He also mentioned that Karnataka ranks 3rd in India for Apprentice training. He highlighted that National Apprenticeship Training Scheme in India is a one year programme equipping technically qualified youth with practical knowledge and skills required in their field of work. The Apprentices are imparted training by the organizations at their place of work. During the period of apprenticeship, the apprentices are paid a stipend amount, 50% of which is reimbursable to the employer from Government of India. He mentioned that the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme is one of the flagship programmes of Government of India for Skilling Indian Youth.

Mechanical companies are more into apprenticeship & we have to focus more in getting the IT companies for Apprenticeship that would help the software Engineers to get into a company.

Mr. Rajesh GS, DGM of System Control Technology Solutions spoke about how houses are converted into rented offices for engineering development & how companies focus on developing their own product.

Mr. Kiran Deshpande, Kirloskar Toyota Textile Machinery, addressed the problem as to how the present generation look for easy job. He spoke about how important is the first 3 to 5 years to build a foundation through learning.

Sahyadri Empowers the Blind & Visually Impaired Sahyadri Empowers the Blind & Visually Impaired A path breaking, innovative eye glasses was conceptualized, researched and designed by RDL Visible Light Communication and Research Centre at Sahyadri Innovation Hub.

To enable the visually impaired / blind person to move around freely within indoor environments like home or office or any unfamiliar spaces, with freedom and without facing any obstacles, RDL has invented a product by using visible light communication.

RDL VLC Lab was inaugurated by Dr. Sudhir Kumar Mishra, CEO & MD BrahMos Aerospace, DRDO on 26th March 2018. Immensely inspired by Dr. Mishra’s inspirational presence and encouragement, the whole team of Research Engineers, Faculty members and students, headed by Mr. Raghavendra Shetty, set forth to develop the product and within 3 months of inauguration of the lab, the product was delivered.

Elevate 100 for Mangaluru & Udupi region held at Sahyadri

Elevate 100 for Mangaluru & Udupi region held at Sahyadri Elevate 100 for Mangaluru & Udupi region held at Sahyadri Elevate 100 organized by K-Tech, Government of Karnataka was held in Sahyadri Campus for the Mangaluru and Udupi region. A total of 12 Teams including 2 teams from Sahyadri participated in the selection process from both the regions. The jury panel consisted of Mr. Sathya Narayana B V, Senior Manager-Karnataka Startup Cell; Mr. Uday Birje, Co-Founder and Director, Thinkstreet Technologies; Mr. Suryanarayanan A, Governing Body Member, TIE, Bengaluru and Ms. Susheela Mahesh, Director, Secured Outsourcing Solutions Private Limited. Mr. Anil Uppin, Managing Director of Karnataka Council for Technological Upgradation (KCTU) was also present during the event.

While addressing the participants, Mr. Sathya Narayana explained about Elevate 100 which is a unique event promoted by Government of Karnataka which has helped many start-ups to get support and funding. He thanked Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation for taking initiative to help the start-ups in the region. Mr. Uday Birje, in his address complemented Sahyadri Management for partnering with Elevate 100 initiative for the last two years. The event was coordinated by MM Active. Shortlisted teams will compete in the state level event to be held in Bengaluru.

Elevate 100 for Mangaluru & Udupi region held at Sahyadri Elevate 100 aims to provide comprehensive entrepreneurship platform for start-ups. The top 100 technology based start-ups chosen through a rigorous hunt across Karnataka will be provided with Government funds/support.

Semester II B.E. Results - Sahyadri at 88.54%

VTU results of II Semester of B.E are declared. Out of 716 students who appeared for the VTU Examination 2018-19, 634 students have passed.

Sahyadri had the honour to host guests from the prestigious St Agnes Institutions Sr Jeswina A.C., Principal, Ms Malavika Shetty, Dean – Administration and Dr R. Nagesh, Head of Department – Hindi, St Agnes College, visited the campus. They interacted with Dr Manuajnath Bhandary – Chairman. They went round the campus after which they praised the college infrastructure tremendously.

Maintaining a clean college environment has been a priority at the Sahyadri campus as it sets a good example to students and improves hygiene levels. The Principal, Sr Jeswina of the St. Agnes College appreciated the cleanliness and hygiene maintained at the Sahyadri campus. Mrs Malavika Shetty interacted with Ms Rashmy Bhandary, Dean, Placements. They discussed about having collaboration between Sahyadri College of Engineering and St Agnes College, regarding placements.

Sahyadri would be too happy to invite the students of St Agnes College for any of the placement drives where the degree students would be required.

Prof. Rathishchandra R Gatti and his team is currently working to develop a collaboration with the Danish company Wavepiston and Aalborg University, DK in the area of Ocean wave energy conversion devices. The research team discussed with Mr. Rajappa, Superintending Engineer; Mr. S Yogindra, Executive engineer, NMPT and Mr. Ashwath, Chief Engineer on the possibilities of other avenues of collaboration with NMPT in-lieu with the contexts of Industry connect and getting industrial projects for the students.

Fifth Batch completes Three-Day Orientation Course in Values Education for Faculty at RIMSE, Mysore Thirty faculty members underwent the “Three-Day Orientation Course in Values Education for faculty” at Ramakrishna Institute of Moral & Spiritual Education (RIMSE), Mysore. During the Valedictory ceremony, Swami Maheshathmanandaji, Correspondent, RIMSE, Mysore reiterated the key takeaways of the course; faculty had an opportunity to exhibit their talent and also share their opinion of the three-day training programme.

Sahyadri aims at providing Quality Education and this vision is accomplished when the key stakeholders are ethically and morally empowered. The objective of deputing faculty for this course is also to provide a calm and peaceful atmosphere conducive to simple living and high thinking; to teach practical disciplines helpful to achieve control and concentration of mind; to acquaint the faculty with cultural and spiritual heritage.

With this, the entire teaching fraternity has completed the course. Further, the non-teaching staff would be deputed on training in batches at RIMSE, Mysore.

Swamiji had words of praise for the authentic learning approach adopted at the institute and blessed Sahyadri to reach greater heights by empowering young minds.

Mr. Anush Bekal, Dept. of ECE successfully defends his doctoral thesis at IIIT-A Mr. Anush Bekal, Asst. Professor, Department of Electronics & Communications Engineering has successfully defended his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Dr. Manish Goswami, Associate professor & HOD-ECE, at the prestigious Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A). The title of his PhD thesis is "Improved Design of Asynchronous ADC with Reduced Comparator Counts". The research work was jointly carried out with Prof. Ashok Srivastava, Louisiana State University, USA which has lead to the fabrication of the Integrated Circuit prototype (credits: MOSIS foundry) and has resulted in 6 publications in the standard SCI-journals and IEEE International conferences. A copy of the thesis has been submitted to the library of the institute.

The programme began with the inauguration in the presence of Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal; Prof. Ravichandra R, Dean–Industry Connect; Prof. Sudheer Shetty, Dean-Examinations and Dr. J V Gorabal, HOD. Principal while giving the inaugural address told the students to maintain consistency in their performance and also asked them to refer to various books other than text books to enhance their knowledge. Further, Dean-Industry Connect emphasized the importance on industry connect courses. Dean-Examination stressed on the importance of attendance and also advised them to maintain good health. Dr. Gorabal welcomed the students to the branch and gave the glimpse of the Computer Science Department.

Sahyadri faculty along with KCTU Team visited CPCRI Mr. Anil Uppin, Managing Director, Karnataka Council for Technological Upgradation (KCTU); Mr. Venkatesh, DIC-Mangalore and Sahyadri faculty team - Dr. Rathishchandra R Gatti, Assistant Professor; Mr. Dennis Pinto and Mr. Nataraj from Caliper visited Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Kasargod. The Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CPCRI) is a premier research institute established for coconut, arecanut and cocoa crops affiliated to Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

During their visit they interacted with Dr. Chowdappa P, Director of CPCRI; Dr. Ravi Bhat, Head-Division of crop production and other scientists. They discussed numerous challenges that the farmers were facing and how engineers must work on those issues. The discussion suggested new ideas to work upon that can be introduced as engineering projects for students and staff of Sahyadri.

Star of the Week Ninad Milan Joshi from the 1st year MBA currently pursuing internship at Equitas Bank, Bengaluru in the HR Department was awarded ‘Star of the Week’ for closing open positions of Business Development Officer in 3 of its branches. He is deputed at Jayanagar Regional Office Bengaluru. This is his last week of internship and has closed a total of 10 positions and has words of praise from the Branch Manager of Equitas Bank for his performance during the internship period.

NASSCOM HR Summit at Chennai Mr. Sheik Suhail Ahmed, an Alumnus of the Department of Mechanical Engineering currently working at Sonomatic Ltd interacted with the students of Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Suhail has a rich experience of working in Oil and Gas Industry across different countries which include UAE, Azerbaijan and Singapore. Presently, he has been deputed to Nigeria where he works as an inspection engineer.

In his talk, he explained the role of NDT engineers and also discussed about the challenges faced by the Oil and Gas Industry. Further, he shared his experiences and advised the students to groom themselves to meet the needs of the Industries. He also recalled his days at Sahyadri and advised students to accept problems as challenges. He also encouraged students to actively participate in value added courses introduced by the institution as it would help them to acquire necessary skills.

Prof. Sunil B N, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering and Prof. Janardhana D R, Dept. of Information Science & Engineering attended AICTE-ISTE sponsored Induction/Refresher Programme on “Data Science and Classification Practicing with Python and MatLab” at Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering, Shivamogga.

The objective of the course was to provide participants with an insight to Data Science focusing on Data Classification, Deep Learning, Feature Extraction, Data Visualization and Fuzzy Approach. Chief Guest of the inauguration programme was Prof. A S Kiran Kumar, Vikaram Sarabhai, Former Chairman, ISRO, Bengaluru.

NASSCOM HR Summit at Chennai Prof. RashmiBhandary, Dean Placement has been a part of the HR Summit 2018 organized by NASSCOM, India at ITC Grand Chola, Chennai - a summit which has brought together leading experts and visionaries from the HR World.

There were some power packed sessions by various guest speakers as well as celebrity key note by Dr. Kamal Hassan and Ms.ManishaKoirala.

Dr. Kamal Hassan spoke on ‘Reimagining the self’. He said - The Key to evolution is the power to re-imagine. It entails the process of reflecting, making changes and living through the impact of the changes. It’s a process to uncover our true self in the midst of fast changing realities. Kamal Hassan spoke about how he continuously re-crafted himself from a superstar, to a playback singer, to a dancer, to a screenwriter, to a producer, to a director, to now also a politician.

Manisha Koirala spoke on ‘Surviving Disruptions and Thriving through Life’. She said - All of us have to weather disruption in our life. While most people succumb to the storm these traumatic events bring with them, the ones who hold the umbrella of hope and positivity in tough times create success stories that travel multiple generations and continents. Manisha Koirala also spoke about how she conquered the battle of disruption in her life and bounced back to carve out a stronger individual from within herself.

The conclave was inaugurated by Dr. Jikyeong Kang, President and Dean, Asian Institute of Management, Manila. In her inaugural address, Dr. Kang spoke about the MBA pedagogy for the new era. She emphasised on holistic approach towards teaching rather than just focusing on pedagogy in isolation. Mr. Ravi Venkatesan, Chairman, Bank of Baroda was the Chief Guest. While addressing the gathering, Mr. Venkatesan spoke about capacity to drive transformational change and stated that the industry needs leaders with character.

Day Two of 9th Indian Management Conclave Day Two of 9th Indian Management Conclave began with a Panel Discussion on the theme "Pedagogy for developing job competencies in MBAs". Few of the Management Institutes presented their case on unique practices they have implemented to enhance the competencies of their students to improve employability.

The 2nd session was on "Leveraging Technology in Education Delivery". Dr. V G Narayanan, Professor and Chair, MBA Elective Curriculum, Harvard Business School spoke about the effective use of technology in MBA Curriculum. It was followed by a lecture by Dr. P D Jose, Professor, Digital Learning, IIM Bangalore.

The 3rd session was a Directors Round Table on "Developing Framework for 21st Century Indian Business School". Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE spoke to the participants through a video address about importance of value education and how we can shift from teaching to self learning mode. This was followed by IMC Distinguished Alumni Award 2018.

Sahyadrian selected as the Campus Ambassador of Hackerearth

Prakyath from 3rd year Information Science & Engineering has been selected as the Campus Ambassador of Hackerearth of Sahyadri. He is also an active member of Sahyadri Open Source Community (SOSC) – Technical club which is affiliated with Google, Mozilla, Microsoft, OWASP programmes etc. SOSC aims to create a student community to promote technological research and development.

HackerEarth is a network of top developers across the world where you can practice solving problem statements. It is a great website for practising competitive programming. Also, they have amazing tutorials to get you going with topics such as Data Structures and Algorithms, mathematics.

Mr Mohammed Shawaz of Expertise Industries visited the campus. He was accompanied by the Yoga Guru from Yoga Kuteera, Mangalore. They interacted with Dr Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman. They went around the campus and the guests praised the college infrastructure tremendously.

Successful completion of Bridge Course -2018 for the second batch

Bridge Course -2018 The opening session of the Bridge Course was conducted by Dr. U M Bhushi, Director -Strategic Planning. He motivated the students by his words
Day 1: Students were explained about various opportunities at Sahyadri College and various engineering fields through a presentation. Afterwards, the students interacted with each other creating new bonds of friendship.
Day 2: Students had a designing session in which they designed 3D and 2D models using the software ‘On-shape’.
Day 3: Students designed their own robots using the software ‘On-shape’ and were given an introduction about laser cutting machine and 3D printing.
Day4: Students designed theMobile applications using the software ‘MIT App Inventor’ and were given a task to design a calculator.
Day5: students learnt the skill of poster making using the ‘Canva’software.and they created the poster of their teams and bots.
Day6: The students from Art and Cultural Department had an interaction with the first years.
Day7: Students came up with different designs to make the bots more attractive and they learnt how to code for their bots using Dream Kit.
Day 8: Students learned coding using the Dream Kit and testing was done. They were given a brief idea on how to make their presentation more effective.
Day 9: On the final Day of the Bridge Course all the students made posters for their bots, and presentation about the Bridge course based on their experience. Afterwards,the event was conducted where the bots have to perform the specific tasks.
All the students were mentored by Mr.Johnson Tellis, Mr.Gouse Khan, Mr.Gautham Nayak and Mr.Shrujan Bhandary.

Faculty clears UGC NET July 2018

Prof. Sadhana, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering has cleared the UGC NET held in July 2018.
The National Eligibility Test (NET), also known as UGC NET, is a test to determine eligibility for college and university level lectureship and for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals. It aims to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in teaching professions and research.

Student Counsellor invited by the Bishop of Belthangady Diocese for Teacher Training Programme Mr. Ankith S Kumar was invited as a Resource person by the Bishop of Belthangady to conduct a refresher course for the teachers of the schools run by the Diocese at Belthangady District. Mr. Ankith explained and demonstrated various innovative and multimedia methods of teaching that can be used to capture the interest of the young minds. He also explained some of the basic techniques of counselling the students.

Faculty member attends short term course at IISc, Bangalore

Mr Krupaksha H. K., Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering attends a Short term Course on “Discrete Choice Theory and Modelling Applications in Transportation” at Indian Institute of Science.

The objective of the course was to provide participants with an understanding of the theory, methods and applications of econometric choice modeling, a mix of theory and modelling tools covered with applications largely drawn from travel demand analysis and transportation planning. The course was facilitated by Prof. Abdul Rawoof Pinjari of IISc, Bangalore, and Dr. Rajesh Paleti of Old Dominion University Norfolk, Virginia, United States.
