Orientation for the Parents of the New Entrants Held in the Campus

The Orientation Programme for the parents of the new entrants to the engineering stream was held in the Campus. Around 500 parents participated in the program. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, welcomed the parents of the new batch of students and urged them to look beyond academics to shape a better future for their wards. He gave an overview of the college saying that the growth of the college is due to the people of this place. The dream is to make Sahyadri one of the top institutes of India. He asked the parents to build a friendly relationship with their wards and requested the parents to share their day-to-day work with their wards by adding a few responsibilities that would be beneficial for the development of soft skills. He requested the parents to encourage students to join the Project and Research team which will enhance their career. He emphasized on the need for building analytical aptitude which will be taught as a subject from third year onwards. He emphasized that discipline, attitude of the students and their dress code is very important for their professional life and it should be built up by them to march ahead. The Chairman mentioned the Corpus Fund, how it aids to run Sahyadri and the sources to collect the funds. He urged the parents to take up educational loans in the name of their wards to make the students more financially responsible. He gave additional details about the E-buzz, E-mails, E-magazine and Newsletter.

Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, addressed the parents on the attitude of the students with a live example. He shared a few recruitment incidents, how they lose the opportunity if the recruitment takes place on holidays. He requested the parents not to spoon feed their wards. He further addressed the parents on the rules and regulations i.e. attendance, dress code, mobile usage, internal assessment, updated current contact number as well as their permanent address.

“FEEL-Employable” Learning and Development Intervention Programme Held in the Campus

The three-day training session “FEEL - Employable” learning and development intervention programme for the first year students was inaugurated by the Principal, Dr. U. M. Bhushi. He addressed the students saying that we are all judgmental and reactive in nature which needs to be rectified and emphasize the need for holistic learning. He encouraged the students to actively participate in the sessions to follow and enjoy the learning process.

Dr. Umashankar, Dean Academics highlighted that India is going to cross the population of China, and has every opportunity of being the world’s largest human resource centre. The resource person Prof. Sunney Tharappan, Director, CLHRD stated that the quality of a programme depends on the person who goes through the training. He also added that learning happens only when we have reflections on it. It is not enough to be good; we should be capable of showing it. Learning has no value unless it has an impact on our everyday living. Prof. Sunney Tharappan is a thinker, writer, master facilitator and trainer, but most of all, a teacher, researching on the development of human resource. He has trained over 86,000 students across India and Sri Lanka.

The FEEL Employable programme helps students redefine themselves through reinforcement of various areas of one’s own human resource. The strategies employed, the methodology adopted, the techniques used, and the action plan implemented is necessarily meant to promote the students to think in positive lines and feel comfortable with his or her achievements. Two hundred and fifty students from four batches of first year Engineering participated in the session. It was co-ordinated by Dr. Molly Chaudhuri, Head, Department of Training.

One-day Training Programme Held for the Newly Elected Student Council Members

The Student Council for the academic year 2015-16 was formed and Mr. Karthik Ramakrishnan, Semester VII, Mechanical Engineering was unanimously elected its President.

Following the elections, all the Council members were given a one-day training programme by Mr. Ramani Venkat, Director, Varnaaz, Bangalore. The newly elected members greatly benefitted from the training. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, addressing the Student Council, congratulated them and appealed to them to be real leaders and through their leadership urged them to create more leaders.

Sahyadri Student Council Inaugurated

The Sahyadri Student Council for the year 2015-16 was inaugurated in the campus. Mr. Nagaraj K., Head-HR & Administration, Udupi Power Corporation Ltd; a unit of the Adani Group and Mr. Ramani Venkat, the Director of Varnaaz Leaders Factory were the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour for the inaugural.

Dr. A. J. Antony, Vice Principal introduced the student council members of the departments of Academics, Training, Placement, Sports, Cultural, Club Activities, Projects & Research, Entrepreneurship and the Student President. He also administered the oath and apprised the council of their objectives.

The Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary presided over the function. In his address, he emphasised that a leader is the one who creates leaders. Mr. Nagaraj, the Chief Guest addressed the students on the qualities of an efficient leader. He gave a presentation on the Adani Group and an insight into the industry requirements and the recruitment process. Mr. Ramani Venkat, the Guest of Honour also addressed the students on the occasion and said that the students were lucky to be studying at Sahyadri College which provides many avenues for leadership. Dr. Umesh. M. Bhushi, Principal emphasised the need for action to become a good leader.

Guest Lecture by Mr. Awad Baksh

Mr. Awad Baksh Regional Sales Manager for Nissan, Suhail Bhawan Automobiles, Muscat Oman, addressed the Marketing students of 2nd year MBA on the 'Marketing challenges in the Automobile Industry”. He spoke on the future which is ruled by digital marketing. He called upon the students to get a real experience of the work place by getting into internships and live projects. He stressed on the opportunities for MBA's in the Middle East. He also promised the students for internships with a handsome stipend which may turn into final placements.

Dr. A. P. Achar Invited as Resource Person

Dr. A.P Achar Director, Department of Business Administration was invited as the resource person by the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE) Hyderabad, to conduct a session on “TQM in Agri -business management” for the participants of US –India- Africa, a 'Triangular International' training programme. Dr. Achar is one among the 20 experts identified by the Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India to conduct a session in this programme.

Invited as Referee and Technical officer for the Senior State Power lifting Championships

Mr Karthik Raj Kudroli, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration, was invited as the referee and technical officer to render his services in the XXXXI Men and XXXIII Women Karnataka State Senior Powerlifting Championships, 2015, held at Harihar, Davangere district. The event was organized by Vishwabandhu Marulasiddeshwara Kreeda Sangha, Harihar, Davangere Dist.

Semester IV Topper in Engineering Mathematics

Glister D’Silva of mechanical engineering has scored 125 out of 125 in Engineering Mathematics IV in the recently conducted VTU examinations.

SSTH College Visit – SRPUC, Ramakunja

The SSTH team visited Sri Ramakunjeshwara PU College, Ramakunja. Mr. Vaishak N. L., Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, accompanied by a team comprising of Mr. John Nikil, Mr. Jagath and Mr. Nilesh demonstrated the Dancing Humanoid, Quadcopter and the All Terrain vehicle. Nearly 150 students enthusiastically interacted with the SSTH team and showed great interest to participate in the upcoming SSTH events.

Awareness Session on GATE Examination

An awareness session on the GATE examination and its benefits was conducted in the Campus by Mr. Abhijith Karkera, GATE Forum, Mangaluru, for the semester V engineering students. The students were impressed by the presentation and were highly motivated to take up competitive examinations like GATE and IES.

Verbattle Mangaluru Zonals

Verbattle Mangaluru Zonal Round was held at Lion Seva Mandir, Mallikatte, Mangaluru. Eight teams participated from Sahyadri, out of which Four teams have cleared the zonals and will be contesting for the finals in Bangalore on the 23rd of August. Sanjay (III Sem. ME), Vidhya.V.Bhat ( IV Sem IS), Zawid (VII Sem MEC), Neha Dutt (VII Sem CV), Bhavik Das ( V Sem ME), Vignesh (VII Sem ME), Pooja (V Sem CS) and Roshni (III Sem IS) will now compete in the finals in Bangalore.

Faculty Attains Certification in "Computational Thinking in Educators"

Mr. Naitik S T, Assistant Professor, Department of Information Science and Engineering having undergone the prescribed course on "Computational Thinking in Educators" has been certified by Google.

Computational Thinking is referred to as employing or approaching computational skills in teaching the concepts of computer science to students in an effective manner. It includes sub concepts like Recursion, Divide and rule, Transformation, Algorithms and Sample coding. It is a free course introduced by Google online for everyone. After successfully completing the course one will be certified by Google which enhances the employability of the students.

Organizations are keen on candidates with such certifications. It is a freeware and interested faculties and final year students can do this certification online and brighten their future.

A paper titled “IMPACT OF ROAD SIDE BUS STOPS ON CAPACITY OF ROADWAY” authored by Mr. Chethan Kumar N.T., Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, has been published in the International Journal Of Advanced Technology in Engineering & Science (ISSN 2348-7550), Volume 03, Issue 07, in the July edition 2015 under the guidance of Dr. Rajendra Khatawkar, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, JNNCE, Shimoga.

Faculty Members Deputed for Higher Studies

Mr. Manjunath Mulimani, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering has been deputed to pursue a Ph.D. in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal.

Mr. Balaji N., Assistant Professor, Department of Master of Computer Applications, has been deputed for higher studies in M.Tech. under the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) Scheme in the department of Computer Science & Engineering in IIT Madras.
