Mr. Sharath K. Shetty Addresses Faculty Members

Mr. Shetty later addressed the faculty members of CS, IS, EC & MCA on the topic, `The Rise and Fall of Indian IT Services’; how the IT services boom began and how it is coming to an end and strategies to survive the fallout.

He spoke about the IT industry beginning from the 70s, the subsequent boom and the present situation in the industry. He said that IT came much later and earlier it was called as software. Earlier, people worked for system software rather than application software, later on, the hunt began for hard skills and soft skills. US Co’s started sourcing people from other countries, until then there were only inter- company transfer. He spoke about the importance of scientists, programmers, coders and operators in the initial stages of growth in the industry and how it moved on to body shopping and outsourcing. The requirements then were largely subject knowledge, good communication skills and people management, so they started hiring from all the branches. The scope of training was narrowed. Currently, with SaaS (Software as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a Service) being largely used in the industry he discussed their effects on the requirements from colleges. He asked colleges to emphasise on problem solving for the students and to connect the dots between topics. He also advised how graduates must aim higher in the value chain.

“FEEL-Employable” Learning and Development Intervention Programme for Second Batch held in the Campus

Umashankar B. S., Dean Academic. He addressed the students saying that training programmes help to understand certain concepts that will secure employment and added that it’s not about how much one has scored in the exam but its all about how much we have learnt in our life. As students we should realise the importance of time, and also thanked the chairman Mr. Manjunath Bhandary for taking the initiative to conduct the programme and wished the programme a grand success. He encouraged the students to actively participate in the sessions and enjoy the learning process.

The resource person Prof. Sunney Tharappan, Director, CLHRD stated that the quality of a programme depends on the person who goes through the training. He also added that learning happens only when we have reflections on it. It is not enough to be good; we should be capable of showing it. Learning has no value unless it has an impact on our everyday living. Every student has enough opportunities, and they have to utilize it optimally. Prof. Sunney Tharappan a thinker, writer, master facilitator and trainer, but most of all, a teacher, researching on the development of human resource has trained over 86,000 students across India and Sri Lanka.

The FEEL Employable programme consists of 12 sessions and each session is associated with one concept. This helps students redefine themselves through reinforcement of various areas of one’s own human resource. The strategies employed, the methodology adopted, the techniques used, and the action plan implemented is necessarily meant to promote the students to think in positive lines and feel comfortable with his or her achievements. Two hundred and thirty six students from four batches of first year Engineering participated in the training programme.

He asked the students to have a purpose listed at the beginning of every year, evaluate with the inner voice and start believing it. He told the students to put their thinking hats on and prioritize between knowledge, skills and abilities. As per his research, abilities are more important than knowledge and skills since knowledge and skills are negotiable. Students should learn the art of showing their abilities during an interview.
