38th Series Seminar and Exhibition of Student Project Programme by KSCST held at Sahyadri

Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) was established in the year 1975. It is one of the first State S&T Councils to be set up in the country. KSCST is an autonomous S&T organization under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka.

During the last forty years, KSCST has been pro-actively engaging itself to identify, propose and implement S&T based solutions to locale specific needs / problems in the broad areas of Water, Education, Energy, Ecology and Environment, Waste Management and Infrastructure. In co-operation with the Indian Institute of Science and several other premier R&D institutions, KSCST executes many projects and programmes aimed at improving socio-economic conditions of the people of the state.

This is the 38th SPP – Seminar and Exhibition in the series being conducted uninterruptedly since its inception and this year it has chosen Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management as its venue to hold this prestigious event. The objective of this Seminar and Exhibition is to inspire students to be more innovative and to build an “innovative society” and to justify the purpose of declaring this decade as the “Decade of Innovations.”

The 38th series of the two day Seminar and Project Exhibition programme was inaugurated in the Campus. It was indeed a conglomeration of enlightened minds.

The programme was inaugurated with an invocation of the almighty followed by the lighting of the lamp. Dr. U.M.Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management welcomed the gathering and attributed the exhibition as a tribute to the late Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.

The opening remarks were made by Dr. S. G. Sreekanteswara Swamy, Executive Secretary, KSCST, who was grateful to the chairman for organising the exhibition in the campus. He said that for the past several years KSCST has been supporting the young budding engineers to enrich the collegiate education and improve the understanding of the engineering education.

Prof. Jayant, M. Modak, Deputy Director Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru delivered the inaugural address and laid emphasis on being an ‘innovator’. He urged the students to go in for entrepreneurship and to initiate startups and thereby create employment.

The Chief Guest of the day Dr. H. Maheshappa, Vice Chancellor VTU, congratulated KSCST for igniting the young minds and encouraged the students to take up projects which in turn serve mankind. He released the SPP engineering compendium along with a CD on this auspicious day.

The Guest of Honour, Shri. A.K.Monappa, IAS, Managing Director Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board and Hatti Gold Mines Company Limited released the SPP biofuel compendium and thereby addressed the gathering.

The Chairman Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management laid importance on the aspect of research, projects and social innovation labs.

Prof. M.S. Mohan Kumar, Secretary KSCST released the book ”Geographical Indications of Karnataka” on this occasion.
Shri. S.N Sondur expressed the vote of thanks, which concluded the inaugural of the 38th series Seminar and Exhibition of student project programme.

The Technical session of the 38th series -seminar and exhibition of student project programme commenced with the technical lecture by Dr. A. Narendranath Udupa, Principal Scientist, Phillips research, Bengaluru at the seminar hall.

Dr. S. G. Sreekanteswara Swamy welcomed the gathering and briefed the audience on Dr. Narendranath Udupa's excellence in the field of science.

Dr. A. Narendranath Udupa's presentation dwelled on t various topics such as ' academy to industry ' and 'control strategics for renewable (solar) energy integration’. He urged the students to ask questions and then understand and learn from the answers.

He also brushed upon topics like IP, IPR, Solar energy and T - shape personalities which was indeed a cornucopia of knowledge.

The technical sesssion was concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. S. G. Sreekanteswara Swamy. The students visited the project exhibition and explored the ocean of information the exhibition had to offer.

The programme was started with an invocation by Pramila and team. Dr. U M Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management welcomed the gathering.

Dr. S.G. Sreekanteshwara Swamy, Executive Secretary KSCST in his opening remarks expressed gratitude to the Chairman and the Principal for successfully organizing the exhibition in the campus.

The guest of honor Prof. Lakshman Nandagiri, Dept. of applied mechanics and hydraulics, NITK, Surathkal called upon the students to be more practical and mentioned about the flip-classes and e-classes.

The Chief Guest Dr. L.V.Muralikrishna Reddy, President, Institution of Engineers (India), Kolkata, complimented KSCST for igniting the young minds and also encouraged the students to take up projects which in turn serve the mankind.

Shri. N Lakshman , Director- Technical, Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company Limited spoke about activities of the KSCST, projects taken by the students and shared his profound knowledge .

Shri. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandari Foundation in his presidential speech thanked NITK for the constant support and also KSCST for organizing such an event which has attracted participants from all over the state.

The overall Championship award for the 38th series of SPP was bagged by NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte, Karkala. The best project of the year (Seminar Project) under the Natural Resource stream was bagged by Civil Engineering branch of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management for the project titled 'Feasibility study and Prototype design for Biogas production in an Engineering college from Canteen food waste'. The project was carried out by Mr. Abhith G., Ms. Renitha G. D'souza and Ms. Shrikalpa P. and guided by Dr. Gautham J. and Ms. Rashmishree K. N.

Dr. Rathishchandra R Gatti expressed the vote of thanks which concluded the 38th series seminar and exhibition of student project program.

Shri. Manish Tewari visits Sahyadri

Shri. Manish Tewari, Spokesperson – AICC and the former Union Minister visited the Campus and interacted with the Chairman and the Principal. On his walk around the premises he appreciated the excellent infrastructure and ambience of the institute and was very impressed with the facilities provided at Sahyadri. He wished the institute the very best in all its endeavors.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Sahyadri Sign Landmark MoU


Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Sahyadri signed an MoU where Reliance shall offer course programmes to the eligible candidates and faculty members of the institute. Reliance shall provide the relevant course materials for the course work and will set up the laboratory and classrooms in the college premises. This MoU will have far reaching impact between Sahyadri and Reliance.

Mr. R.V. Balasubramaniam Iyer, Vice President, L&D, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited and Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management signed the MoU in the presence of Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Sahyadri Educational Institutions.

Orientation Program Held for the Parents of the New Entrants

The Orientation Programme for the parents of the new entrants to the engineering stream was held in the Campus. Around 100 parents were present for the program held in two different sessions.

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, welcomed the parents of the new entrants and urged them to look beyond academics to shape a better future for their wards. He placed an overview of the college saying that the growth of the college is due to the people of this place. The dream is to make Sahyadri one of the top institutes of India. He gave a message to the parents that they should build a friendly relationship with their wards and requested their parents to share their day-to-day work with their wards by adding a few responsibilities that will be beneficial for development of soft skills. He requested the parents to encourage students to join the Project and Research team which will enhance their career. He emphasized on the need for building analytical aptitude which will be taught as a subject from the third year onwards. Discipline, attitude of the students and their dress code is very important for their professional life and it should be built up by them to march ahead. The Chairman mentioned the Corpus Fund, how it aids to run Sahyadri and the sources to collect the funds. He urged the parents to take up educational loans in the name of their wards to make the students financially responsible. He gave additional details about the E-buzz, E-mails, E-magazine and Newsletter.

Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, addressed the parents on the attitude of the students with a live example. He shared a few recruitment incidents, how they lose the opportunity if the recruitment takes place on holidays. He addressed the parents on the rules and regulations i.e. attendance, dress code, mobile usage, internal assessment, updated current contact number as well as their permanent address.

Social Innovation Workshop Held in the Campus

A two-day Social Innovation Workshop was organized for the faculty members in the Campus. Dr. Sanjay Kotbagi, HOD, Department of Humanities, BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli, was the main resource person. Prof. Vilas Purohit and Mrs. Sujatha Kotbagi were the other resource persons.

The workshop focused on the importance of “Social Innovation” in the professional growth of students and faculty. The resource persons illustrated how the concept of social innovation can inculcate certain qualities like positive attitude, team work, communication skills, design oriented thinking, social responsibility, and logical thinking among the students. The resource persons focused on importance of motivating the students to take up projects that focus on social innovation to create social awareness and social consciousness among the students. Various stages of evaluating the social innovative concepts were discussed in the workshop.

Exposure Visit to “Namma Bhoomi, near Kundapura

A group of second year MBA students along with seven faculty members, Mr. Raghavendra Prabhu, Dr. Vishal Samartha, Mr. Ramesh, Mr. Girish, Ms. Sushma, Mr. Abhay Kumar and Mr. Lokesha visited “Namma Bhoomi (Our Earth)” ,a NGO nominated thrice for Nobel Peace Prize Award near Kundapura. The group of students and faculty members were welcomed by Mr. Nagaraj, Officer In-charge,Vocational Training, Namma Bhoomi and his team. Mr. Ramesh Mayya briefed the students on the parent organization “The Concerned for Working Children”.

He briefed that the organization was a 30 year old organization and their programmes cover the rural and urban districts of Karnataka reaching out to working children and their communities, school children and local governments. He informed about the evolution of Makkala Panchayats and how it has been implemented by the government today.

The students and the faculty members were taken around the 6.5 acres of the campus and were explained the different training programmes that the students at their campus undergo which include Garment Stitching, Carpentry, Beautician Course, Computers, Pottery, Dairy and Farming.

Namma Bhoomi has residential accommodation at “Namma Halli”, a safe and funspace for 200 children. Recently, Namma Nalanda Vidyapeetha has been launched in a 10.5 acres campus close to Namma Bhoomi to house the educational activities.

Namma Angadi, a collective marketing platform for young traditional crafts persons of Karnataka was started in 1993 to empower young adults with a vocation and livelihood so that they need not migrate to urban centers in search of a livelihood and also to keep alive the rich tradition of rural India. The students and the faculty members enlightened on this concept and all of them were able to shop the products too which included Kurta, Kurti, Clay Items, Key Chains, Jute Bags, Patch work bags etc.

The MBA students conducted different activities for the children at the NGO and also shared their experiences which could help them build their career. They also donated stationary at the NGO.

Dr. Vishal Samartha Appointed by VTU on the MBA Board of Examiners

Dr. Vishal Samartha, Professor, Department of Business Administration is appointed by VTU on the MBA Board of Examiners for the Academic year 2015-16. It is another feather in the cap for the institute.

Faculty Member Presents a Paper in a National Conference

Mr. Praveen Kumar M., Asst. Professor, Dept. of Electronics & Communication Engg., presented a paper entitled “Comparative Analysis of Color Image Watermarking using DWT, DWT-SVD and DCT” at the National Conference on Advances in Communication and Signal Processing, NCACSP-2015 organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (UG Programme accredited by NBA, New Delhi), St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru.

“FEEL-Employable” Learning and Development Intervention Programme in the Campus

The three-day training session “FEEL - Employable” learning and development intervention programme organised by the Department of Training for the third batch of students of the first year was inaugurated at Netravathi Auditorium.

The resource person Prof. Sunney Tharappan, Director, CLHRD stated that this programme is meant for learning and added that Sahyadrians are fortunate to have this programme in the first year. Learned engineers are necessary but having a resourceful engineer is an asset to the company. Education is one of the methods of improving human resource.

The FEEL Employable programme consists of 12 sessions and each session is associated with one concept. This helps students to redefine themselves through reinforcement of various areas of one’s own human resource. The strategies employed, the methodology adopted, the techniques used, and the action plan implemented is necessarily meant to promote the students to think in positive lines and feel comfortable with his or her achievements. Two hundred and forty-six students from four batches of first year Engineering are participating in the session.

Internship Program for Final Year Students

Department of Civil Engineering has organized an internship program for final year students. The main objective of this program is to upgrade the knowledge of fresh engineering graduates as per industry requirements and help them to get better job opportunities. The students are exposed to the various site aspects in industry due to which they can be easily absorbed by the companies without much training. Students are made to visit and observe the various sites and the activities going around.

On the first day students visited construction sites in and around Mangalore where they observed the excavation and foundation works.
