Shri. Marithibbegowda Deputy Chairman, Karnataka Legislative Council Visits Sahyadri

Shri. Marithibbegowda, Deputy Chairman, Karnataka Legislative Council, visited the Campus and interacted with the Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Director, Dr. D. L. Prabhakara and the Principal, Dr. U. M. Bhushi during which he shared his personal experiences.

Shri. Marithibbegowda emerged as a winner for the third consecutive time in the elections held to the Legislative Council from the South Teachers’ constituency and also has served as a member of the Mysore University syndicate and senate. He has contributed enormously to student’s education.

Shri. Marirthibbegowda went around the college campus along with his team. He said that every facility fostering world-class learning for students has been looked into and this is a role model for other colleges. He specifically laid emphasis that the education imperative has to be seen through its contribution to society and this aspect is clearly visible in the institute. He said that the students studying in this institute are blessed and that they should make use of the resources and scope offered by the college. He opined that Sahyadri is on par with any renowned foreign university with a great future in the days ahead.

Dr. Anjana Devi Professor Ruhr-University Addresses Faculty Members

An interactive talk by Dr. Anjana Devi, Professor, Inorganic Materials Chemistry Research Group, Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, was held in the Campus. The talk was organised jointly by the Academic, Research, and Training Departments of the College along with the Rotary Club of Mangalore.

Dr. Anjana Devi addressed the faculty members on " Atomic scale Engineering of Nanostructured functional materials: Chemical approaches to tackle challenges in materials development." She spoke about employing chemical approaches for developing thin films and the various concepts such as chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, rare earth oxides, and transparent oxide semiconductors for flexible light electronic gadgets.

She thanked the Chairman and the entire management for giving her an opportunity to put forward her ideas, and she encouraged those present to enroll into research studies in Germany.

Dr. Anjana Devi also addressed the Academic & Research co-ordinators from every section and other interested students on "Higher Education and Pursuing Research in Germany: Perspectives and Opportunities."

She elaborated on the education system in Germany and stressed that education is something which they don’t compromise on and added that students are more independent in Germany.

She gave in-depth information on Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD), German Academic Exchange Service - German national agency for international academic cooperation and exchange and independent association of universities that provides scholarships and grants along with information and counseling about studying and research in Germany. It has 70 regional offices and information centres worldwide. She explained about the three- tier degree structure which consists of Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. She mentioned that there are more than 250,000 international students in Germany with high academic standards. She also spoke about the types of higher education system in Germany such as research universities, universities of applied science and outstanding research institutions. The various procedures to be followed to study abroad, information on scholarship provided for funding to study abroad, internship, or senior thesis research were some of the other topics she spoke on.

During her talk she gave numerous tips for students to succeed in life and urged students to explore the opportunities to study abroad.

Dr. Anjana Devi obtained her doctoral degree in Philosophy from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, India. Her current research activities include Thin Film Deposition by Metal Inorganic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) and Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) of Metals, Semiconductors, and High-k oxide, Ferroelectric and Spintronic Materials and their Application. She has published a vast number of research papers since the year 1994. She was awarded the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, Germany and the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Foundation, Germany Fellowship and the Research Associate Fellowship from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Currently, she is a visiting Professor, IIT, Hyderabad. She was nominated as a member of the Global Young Faculty (GYF) and elected as ‘Speaker’ of the Climate Group of GYF, founded by the Mercator Foundation and University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr, Germany (www.facing-climate-change.org). She received the Best Invention Prize (Patent Erfinderwettbewerb) Ruhr-University Bochum (2005) and Research award from the Rector of Ruhr-University Bochum.

Tholons CEO Visits Sahyadri

Ms. Ankita Vashistha, CEO, Tholons addressed the research team and senior faculty members of Sahyadri. She enlightened the team on building a rapport with the industries for research in specific fields. She also stressed upon publishing white papers on varied research fields and create a digital library of our own so that people not only can take cognizance of the activities that we do as an institute but also encourage people to participate in the research activity. She also spoke about the opportunities available with respect to external funding for research projects.

In her address to the Student Council Members she stressed that entrepreneurs should have leadership and risk taking ability. They should also believe in their ideas. Every startup should have a CEO (Chief Executive Officer), CFO (Chief Finance Officer) and CTO (Chief Technical Officer). In countries like India, there should be more number of CTOs. She also believes there should be more involvement in startups and they should have higher designations. In India where more than 75% of the population resides in villages there should be more mobile applications to help farmers. She believes that every startup should have a good business plan and should also conduct regular surveys. She has a Masters in Finance & Management from Cranfield School of Management, UK and an engineering degree from MSR Institute of Technology, India.

Ms. Vashistha comes from an advisory, investments, private equity and venture capital background. At Tholons, she manages the advisory, research, education and investments groups. She works very actively in the start-up ecosystem in India, Philippines, Singapore, UK, and USA to source, evaluate and mentor start-up companies. She works closely with portfolio companies to help them create value, scale and expand globally. She is passionate about investing in the mobile, e-commerce, analytics and education space.



Freshers Day at Sahyadri

The Freshers Day was celebrated at Sahyadri with Ms. Ankita Vashistha as the chief guest and Mr. Nachappa K.U. as the guest of honour. The Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary addressed the gathering and stated that this is the day where we should take up goals; achieve them by doing our best and attain success in the coming years. He welcomed both the guests and advised the students to take the guests as role models. He said that ‘engineers are visionaries; they create jobs for others’. He also added that one needs to be enrolled in project based learning along with academics.

Mr. Nachappa delivered his address and spoke about goals and empirical research. He said that having a goal is important to be successful in life and added that it is a right time for students to develop a specific goal in life. He said that identifying the problem is a driving skill that every engineer must have. At the end he advised students to make use of the facilities provided by the college.

Mr. Nachappa K.U. is the Finance Lead, APAC Accenture Operations. His key skills are business analytics, project management, business strategy and programme management. He has a MBA from IIM Bangalore and BE from Bangalore University. He started his career as Financial Analyst, India - grew to Business Operations Manager, ASEAN. He has supported many of the business units in providing financial, sales and decision support & analysis

Ms. Ankita Vashistha was very impressed with the vision of our chairman. She spoke about what is engineering and what students learn from it. She spoke about various skills that an engineer should have like logical skills, reasoning skills, analytical skills, problem solving skills and creativity.

She stated that engineers have transferrable skills. She highlighted the student’s life at college which includes learning, team work, leadership, discussions, networking, extracurricular activities, and self discovery. She said that networking is very important to learn new things. She also spoke about entrepreneurship which involves being a risk taker, team work, believer, leader and hard worker. She encouraged the students to be entrepreneurs.

Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, remarked that the College expects every moment of students to be fresh throughout the year. He also spoke about perfections which will make the students highly professional.

Mr. Naveen Nazareth of JSW Interacts with Students of Mechanical Engineering

Mr. Naveen Nazareth, Junior Manager, JSW, visited the campus and interacted with the students of mechanical engineering. He gave an overview of JSW and shared with the students how to get through the campus recruitments. He oriented the students on JSW test patterns.

Col. Prashant Petkar Addresses Students of Mechanical & Civil Engineering

Col Prashant Petkar , Director, Army Recruiting Office at Mangaluru visited Sahyadri and addressed the pre final year students of mechanical and civil engineering. He gave an overview of the Indian Army and the contribution of the Indian Army to the nation. He called upon the students to join the Indian Army if they have passion for the same. He explained the primary as well the secondary role of the army, the way of life in the army, the selection process and the training that one undergoes. He also informed the students on the variety of life, challenges and rewards of being an army officer. He further stressed on what one really wants to do to excel in all stages of life. Col Prashant Petkar was commissioned in the Regiment of Artillery in August 1989. During a military career spanning twenty-six years, he has served in Punjab, remote areas of Assam, Manipur in North East and Rajouri, Poonch in J&K. He has also served in the high altitude areas in Arunachal Pradesh and Gurez in J&K. He has rich experience of participation in Operation Rhino in North East, Operation Rakshak in Punjab and J&K, Operation Vijay and Operation Parakram. Col Prashant Petkar is an instructor in gunnery and has imparted training to cadets at Officers Training Academy, Chennai. He is responsible for the recruitment of soldiers from eleven districts of Karnataka.

Alumnus of the Month Felicitated

Mr. Prashanth Baliga, from the MBA batch of 2010 – 2012 was felicitated as the Alumni for the Month of August 2015 by the Department of Business Administration in a programme oganised by the department. He is known for his talent in extraordinary creative thinking and graphic designing. He has worked as a Technical Trainer at NIIT, Mangaluru. Apart from being a Freelance Graphic Designer and a Technical Trainer, he is a businessman and deals with Godrej Interior products in Mangaluru, under the firm name "Baliga sales & service". He had designed a web application called “CyBeR $pY” to trace cyber criminals which was highly appreciated by the Mayor of the City Corporation and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru. He also owns few brands of his own, namely Reborn T-shirts and Keydrivers Mangaluru. He is the proprietor of virtual freelance designing firm by the name PBDesigns which is getting highly popular. During his MBA, he had not only won various awards in inter-collegiate marketing events but was also awarded the Best Student of the Year 2010-2012 for extracurricular activities. Mr. Prashanth Baliga addressed the final year MBA students and inspired them to think differently and indulge in creative projects that will enhance their employability.

Two-Day Enablement Workshop Held for MBA Students

The Department of Business Administration organized a two-day Enablement Workshop for the students of final year MBA in collaboration with the resource persons Mr. Mohan Kumar, Practice Head, Wipro Technologies and Mr. Ashok Bhat, Director, Cognizant Technologies. The workshop curriculum was based on experiential learning, video-based learning and learning by direct experience sharing. Some of the topics included, fundamentals of leadership, goal setting, importance of communication skills – Oral, Written, Body language, Building Self-Confidence & Self-Esteem. The workshop also gave insight into business analytics, mock technical and HR interviews, GD and etiquette.

Mr. Bijal Chhaya, Principal Consultant - Leadership & People Sciences, Wipro Technologies, conducted a parallel session for the faculty members of the department on “Seeing Adaptive Leadership through Multiple Lenses” wherein he emphasized that an individual should have a self-belief and be strong under the skin – “who you are and what you want to become”. This will make him/her sustainable for life. He focused on the four modes of leadership i.e. Technical Leadership, Co-operative Leadership, Collaborative Leadership and Innovative Leadership. He stressed on the fact that as individuals the focus is primarily on “What & How” of a scenario, however, focus should also be shifted to “Why and Who”. He re-iterated that students are diversified with different background and different interest. Their curiosity should be appreciated and should stimulate them to be creative. He concluded the session by stating that “Teachers are the life blood of the success of an institute and hence they should teach in a manner in which students learn”. The workshop has laid the foundation for the students to prepare for job interviews and had many takeaways during the two days.

Mr. Zeeshan Ramlan Addresses MBA Students

Mr Zeeshan Ramlan, Lead HR, Infosys, addressed the final year students MBA on the role of HR in the IT industry. He briefed the students on life in the IT industry and gave a bird’s eye view on corporate expectations from the freshers.



Mr. Raghavendra K. Delivers a Guest Lecture in the Campus

Mr. Raghavendra K., Unit Head Operations, Future Group, delivered a guest lecture on retail management. He enlightened the students on different formats of retail management, career in retail and skills set expected from fresh post graduates in the retail sector.

Guest Lecture for MBA Students on Taxation

Mr. Ashik R., Assistant Accounts Officer, New Mangaluru Port Trust, Mangaluru, visited the Department of Business Administration, and gave a lecture on taxation. He interacted with the second year MBA finance students. He is a well-known wildlife photographer.



Yoga Guru Dr. H R Nagendra Speaks on Yoga as a Way of Life

Dr. H R Nagendra, Chancellor, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (SVYASA), Deemed University addressed the teaching, non teaching and the students on yoga and its importance. The chief guest was Prof. Dr. Anjana Devi, Professor, Inorganic Materials Chemistry Research Group, Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, was delighted to welcome the two guests to the institution. He encouraged the audience to take the two guests as their role models for their career growth.

The yoga guru is a qualified mechanical engineer who has a PhD from IISc. He worked with NASA for a very small tenure and has also served the Harvard University as a consultant. Dr. Nagendra has penned 35 books on yoga and has presented over 100 research papers on engineering and yoga. He was also honored with the title ‘Yoga Sri’ by the legendary BKS Iyengar. Currently, he is the President of Swamy Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhan Samsthana (VYASA) with a belief that specialized yoga and lifestyle modifications are a key to health solutions. Dr. Nagendra addressed the teaching, non teaching and students about yoga and its importance and yoga as a way of life, the science of holistic living to bring health and happiness, peace, efficiency, harmony and growth in individuals. The Integrated Yoga Approach can solve the problems of the modern society and build ideal social orders. By using the knowledge of consciousness, and the yoga way of life, a new global era of spirituality (as science) and yoga (as technology) will emerge to solve the basic problems of the modern hi-tech era. He added that yoga is a process of purification and that practical knowledge is important to contribute to societal projects. He explained how one can apply the principles and techniques of yoga to meet various challenges of modern life and to integrate yoga with other forms of healthcare like naturopathy, ayurveda, allopathy and homeopathy. He welcomed each and every one to join the global network to continue the journey to learn, practice, teach and own our yoga programs at Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, Bengaluru.

Prof. Dr. Anjana Devi encouraged the gathering to have a vision and follow one’s dreams to attain one’s goals. Comparatively, practical training is lacking in India. It is very important to practice the knowledge gained and contribute to society in a positive way.

M.Tech. Part Time Semester IV Results: Sahyadri 100%

The part time M.Tech. VTU results 2015-16 has been declared with all the four streams, Digital Electronics (LDZ), Transportation Engineering (CTZ), Computer Integrated Manufacturing (MCZ) and Computer Science & Engineering (SPZ) securing 100% results.

M.Tech. Part Time Semester II Results

The VTU part time M.Tech. results 2015-16 of Computer Integrated Manufacturing(MCZ) and Computer Science & Engineering (SPZ) both securing 100% results while Transportation Engineering (CTZ) is at 85.71% and Digital Electronics( LDZ) secured 71.43%.

Students Present Research Paper in UGC Sponsored National Conference

A research paper titled " Green Marketing Strategies: A Literature Review on Creating Value" authored by Mr. Karthik Raj Kudroli, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration and co-authored by Ms. Dhruvi Kothari and Ms. Jeslin James, second year MBA students was presented in the UGC sponsored National Conference held at SDM College of Business Management, Mangaluru.

Sahyadri Boys’ Badminton Team Champions for Third Consecutive Year

The Sahyadri Boys’ Badminton team has emerged the Champions for the third consecutive year and the girls’ team is the Runners-up in the VTU, Mangalore Zone Badminton Tournament held at NMAMIT, Nitte.

Nishmithchand S. (Captain), Yashwin J. S., Srinidhi G. S., Nakul Mahesh K. P., and Ashwanth C. K. of the boys’ team clinched the championship title and Chaithra Shetty (Captain), Anvitha P. R., Arathi M., Swapna and Akshatha of the girls’ team clinched the runners-up title in the tournament.

Faculty Member Invited as Chief Guest and Resource Person

Prof. Sudheer Shetty, Associate Professor & HOD, Department of Computer Science & Engineering was invited as the Chief Guest for the inauguration of the Science Club of Trisha College, Kallianapura, Udupi. He also delivered a technical talk on “Science – Current Inventions and Innovations” on the occasion.

Internship Programme for Final Year Students of Civil Engineering

Students of civil engineering visited a construction site in Mallikatte near Kadri as part of their internship program. Students interacted with the site engineer and gathered useful information especially giving more attention to building components and measurement.
