Commodore Harshad Datar and Commander Vijay Singh from Naval Headquarters, Delhi, visit Sahyadri

Commodore Harshad Datar and Commander Vijay Singh, Director and Joint Director, Naval Headquarters, New Delhi, visited Sahyadri campus and interacted with the faculty and students with the aim to motivate them towards research activities. During the walk around, they appreciated the infrastructure and the facilities available. Commodore Harshad Datar planted a coconut sapling in the premises and indicated that the relationship between Sahyadri and the navy should grow like the sapling. Commander Vijay Singh briefed on the procedure for writing research proposals and indicated that NHQ will look forward to receiving many proposals from Sahyadri. Lt. Gen (Dr.) N. S. Malik, PVSM, Former Deputy Chief of Army Staff visits Sahyadri

Lt. Gen (Dr.) N. S. Malik, PVSM, Former Deputy Chief of Army Staff, accompanied by Former Lt. Gen. P. G. Kamath, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, Commadant Army War College, Brigadier Narayan Swamy and Prof. Satya Narayana Murthy, visited the Campus. They were received by Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, and Prof. M. N. Nayak, Administrator and were taken around the Campus by the Principal and the Administrator. As he entered the gates of Sahyadri, Lt. Gen (Dr.) N. S. Malik, was extremely pleased to see the college and the surroundings and said that, “This is how a college should be.” He even stopped and spoke to several students and was happy to see them with so many smiles.

The former Deputy Chief of Army Staff later interacted with the student community and the teaching fraternity to spread awareness on National Security Issues. In his address to the gathering, he spoke about the threats and challenges that face the nation and what the youth as the Future of India will have to do to confront these issues. With his vast experience spanning over four decades in the Indian Army he told the gathering that India has it all; the Comprehensive National Power which encompasses the hard power, the economic, the political, the social, and the military; but how astutely and where exactly we use both the hard power and the soft power is what will lead India far and beyond. All it needs he said was the right leadership and the youth of today can carry us on with it. Lt. Gen (Dr.) N. S. Malik galvanized the students and urged them with patriotic fervour to be an Indian first and build a strong India.

Advocate P. P. Hegde, a well-known advocate of the High Court of Karnataka who also accompanied the delegates, spoke to the gathering and urged them to join hands to make a united, undivided India with strong leadership and make it a super power to be reckoned with.

Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, asked the students and the audience to get into the act and introspect on making India a strong and powerful nation. He said that at least twice in a year; once on Independence Day and the other on Republic Day, we should with gratitude, learn to hoist the National Flag in remembrance of all the soldiers and the great leaders who gave us a free India.

Lt. Gen (Dr.) N. S. Malik was delighted to be given the opportunity to interact with the DREAMERS Club members. He motivated the team and said that it was in their hands now to take India forward with research and technology. He was excited to learn of their inventions and the concept of the hydrographic vehicle for surveillance of the sea shore. He congratulated the team on the many accolades they had received. It may be recalled that the members of the club have been making the headlines for winning several competitions in the prestigious IITs such as IIT, Kharagpur and IIT, Chennai. Team “DREAMERS” won First Prize in the National Students Space Challenge-13 (NSSC13) held at IIT-Kharagpur, the Best Team Award in the Lunar Rover Challenge organized by team Indus, hosted by IIT, Madras, the second place in the IIT event, "Kshitij 2013" for their design "the DREAM Overhaul," and the second place in the event `Lakshman Rekha (line following robot)’, a national level technical fest organised by SNIST, Hyderabad.

Lt. Gen. P. G. Kamath also shared a story with the team with a moral and asked the team to have self-esteem and always use obstacles as opportunities to grow in life and to build a stronger nation.

Mr. P. P. Hegde, Advocate of the High Court of Karnataka and the president of the all-India president of Youth for Nation (YFN) interacted with team DREAMERS and emphasised on the role of leadership in the progress of the nation and invited them to visit his office. The members of the Club enjoyed their interaction with all the dignitaries.

Mr. Ashok Kumar Shetty talks on Hydroforming; Principle and Application

Mr. Ashok Kumar Shetty, CEO, Autoforms and Managing Director, Comfort Products Pvt. Ltd., addressed the students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Mr. Ashok Shetty is a Mechanical Engineer from Mysore University who graduated in the year 1970. He has a total of forty-two years of work experience. Mr. Shetty began his career as a Supervisor – Tool Room at MS Press Metal Corporation, Mumbai, in 1970. He has served as a Works Manager at Electro Pneumatics & Hydraulics (I) Pvt. Ltd. and retired as a Works Director in the year 2010. Mr. Ashok Shetty is a member of Indo- German Chamber of Commerce and Indo- American Chamber of Commerce. He is an alumnus of NITK. His areas of interests include Factory Management, Development of Sheet Metal Products, Innovative Appliances, and Social Service.

In his presentation, Mr. Ashok Kumar Shetty gave a brief introduction of his company. He also stressed on the fact that learning new machining technologies is the need of the hour for the students. He gave an overview into the nuts and bolts of Hydroforming and why it is important for students to learn about it. He provided valuable information on the different processes of Hydroforming and its advantages as compared to traditional forming processes.

Mr. Shetty promised to provide assistance to the students in their research endeavours especially any project involving tube forming processes.

Professor B. N. Karkera, Adjunct Faculty, also spoke on the development of a new vehicular system developed by him in collaboration with NITK Alumni and Sahyadri students.

The gathering included, Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, Prof. S. S. Balakrishna, HoD of the department, faculty members, and students from M.Tech, final year and pre-final year.


(NVL) IBM India Pvt. Ltd. pool campus recruitment drive

(NVL) IBM India Pvt. Ltd. pool campus recruitment drive was conducted in the Campus. 500 students from twenty-two pool colleges participated in this drive for the position of Associate System Engineer. The delegates from IBM India Pvt. Ltd. and Nicco Ventures, conducted online tests in separate batches for the candidates.

A technical an HR round was held in which eighteen candidates were selected. Ms. Ashmitha, student of the college, Department of Computer Science & Engineering was one among the eighteen selected in the IBM pool campus recruitment drive. Mr. Abhijeeeth, of the campus hiring team of IBM gave a post placement talk and the pipeline of projects which IBM handles giving a clear road map to the selected candidates.

Sports meeting held in the Campus

A get-together was arranged by the Department of Physical Education for the student sports coordinators and sportspersons who have performed well in academics. In the meeting, events for the Sports Day and current semester inter-class and VTU games were discussed in detail. Dr. Mohandas Bhat, Dean- Academics, addressed the gathering and motivated the students. Ms. Poornima Pakkala, Athlete of Semester VIII, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, welcomed and thanked the gathering.

College of Nursing results: Sahyadri 100%

Students of Sahyadri College of Nursing have performed exceptionally well in the under-graduate B.Sc. and P.B.B.Sc. nursing examination held in August 2013 by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore.

Out of forty-seven fourth year B.Sc. students of nursing who sat for the examination, one student obtained a distinction, twenty-five a first class and twenty-one students a second class, bringing the overall percentage score to 100%.

Fifty third year B.Sc. students sat for the examination, out of which two students obtained a distinction, thirty-six a first class and twelve students obtained a second class, bringing the overall percentage score to 100%.

In the second year B.Sc. examination of August 2013, forty-nine students sat for the examination, out of which one student obtained a distinction, seventeen a first class and twenty-eight obtained a second class bringing the overall percentage score to 96%.

The second year P.B. B.Sc Nursing saw an impressive overall percentage score of 98%. Six out of forty-nine students obtained a distinction, thirty-three a first class and four students obtained a second class.

National Level Recognition for the Team “Challengers”

The team “Challengers”, comprising of Mohammad Anwar, Probid J., Gokul K. Nair, Sachin Kumar Nair, Bishwas M., Fadil Luquman and Nived P., under the guidance of Prof. Abdul Kareem, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, received a cash prize of Rs. 5000/- for their design in the national level flying event, “Boeing”, organized by IIT, Khargapur as a part of their Tech-fest “KSHITIJ-2014.” The team was also among the top five finalists among eighty teams in another event, “Embetronix”; a line following bot competition.

National IT Aptitude Test (NITAT) at Sahyadri

Mr. Vikas, Guest faculty from NIIT, Bejai, conducted an IT Aptitude Test for final year students of Computer Science & Engineering, Information Science & Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering. Seventy-two students took the test.

Internationally recognised Roller Skater Ms. Sharanya is a Sahyadrian

Ms. Sharanya Mahesh, student of I year MCA, is an internationally recognized roller skater. She has won thirty-three Gold, thirty-two Silver and seven Bronze medals in various roller skating events at the State, National and International level ever since she began her skating practice in 1996. She has represented India in the World Speed Championship at Suzhou, China and in the Asian Roller Skating Championship at Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where she won two Bronze medals for the country. She is a ten times State Individual Champion.

Faculty members’ research paper published in Asia-Pacific Conference

A research paper titled, "A Low Power Preamplifier Latch based Comparator Using 180nm CMOS Technology", by Mr. Anush Bekal et.al, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, was published in the Microelectronics and Electronics (PrimeAsia), 2013 IEEE Asia-Pacific Conference on Postgraduate Research in Microelectronics and Electronics (Prime Asia) at Visakhapatnam with ISBN 978-1-4799-2751-7/13.

ORPH-Help: To give is to receive

TOXICS - Technically Outstanding eXperts of Information & Computer Science Engineering Students, the students’ association of Department of CSE / ISE conducted “Orph-Help;” an intra-departmental activity which is an initiative to help the elderly, orphans and differently-abled people of the society.

The function was inaugurated by Dr. Mohandas Bhat. S., Dean - Academics.Prof. M. N. Nayak - Administrator, Mr. Sudheer Shetty, HoD, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Dr. Manu A. P. HoD, Department of Information Science & Engineering, faculty members and office bearers of TOXICS were present during the function.

Various competitions were conducted for the students and lecturers and this paved an opportunity for them to showcase their talents. There were four indoor activities; Collage Competition, Movie Quiz, Dumb Charades and Variety Programmes.


Faculty member invited as Guest Speaker

Dr. Vishal Samartha was invited as a guest speaker at SDM College of Business Management, Mangalore. She spoke on her research experiences and urged the students to pursue research in their area of interest. She emphasized that with utmost passion, sincerity and hard work, any goal can be achieved. As an alumnus of the College, Dr. Vishal Samartha was felicitated on her award of the Doctoral Degree by Dr. Devaraj, Director, SDM Post-Graduate Center for Management Studies and Research, Mangalore.
