HR Conclave on Emerging Trends of Managing Human Resources

SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) and the Department of Business Administration, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, have jointly organized a two-day HR Conclave on, `Emerging Trends of Managing Human Resources.’

The two-day HR Conclave was inaugurated in the Campus by Mr. Farhat Umar, GM, HR & OD, Amneal Pharmaceuticals, Ahmedabad. In his inaugural address, Mr. Farhat said that higher education today is facing the challenge to develop industry-ready skill sets for an employer-desired work force. To meet these challenges, there must be regular interaction between the industry and the academia highlighting the importance of human resource in an enterprise. Mr. Farhat appealed to institutions of higher education to focus on development of skills relevant to industry along with required knowledge. During this economic uncertainty, to achieve a competitive edge, the total quality of people plays an important role; so the focus should be development of apt skills and behavior along with academics.

Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Sahyadri Educational Institutions, presided over the inaugural function. Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, in his presidential remarks shared the importance of practicing human values for being successful in today’s competitive world.

Eminent HR personalities from leading corporate houses like Deloitte, Hewlett Packard, Kirloskar Electricals, Siemens, will jointly share the current emerging trends and challenges in managing HR in the presence of academic experts from the Manipal Group, Jain University, AIMS Bangalore and SDM. More than 300 delegates, faculties, students and from industry are participating in the Conclave.

Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, welcomed the gathering. Dr. A. P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration, presided over the Conclave. The chief coordinator of the Conclave, Dr. Vishal Samartha, delivered the vote of thanks.

Following the inaugural programme, Mr. Farhat Umar, addressed the session on Emerging Trends in HRM and Ms. Madhulika Vedula, Executive Manager, Deloitte, Hyderabad, engaged a session on Paradigm Shift in Talent Management. Employee Branding and Employee Value Proposition was the session topic dealt by Mr. Nishanth Mohanty, Global HR Head and CHRO Manipal Group and Mr. Nadeem Sarfaraz from SHRM enlightened the delegates on Technology Enabled Human Resource Management.

On the second and concluding day of the HR Conclave a session was engaged on Managing Generation Z Employees by Mr. Saravan Praveen, HR Manager from HP. Ms. Nanditha Seetharamiah, HR Partner from HP briefed about the Emerging Importance of Social Media in HR Practice by the corporate businesses. Dr. Muralidhar, VP – HR, Kirloskar Electricals, Bangalore, addressed the session on Outsourcing; A Strategic Alliance for Excellence. Mr. Dheeraj Shetty, Head HR, JBF Pharmaceuticals, Mr. Jadhav Prashanth Group HR – Manager Siemens, Dr. Uday Chandra, Registrar, SDM Ujire, and Mr. Saravan Praveen, HR-HP Company were in the panel discussion on Emerging Trends in HR.

College of Nursing celebrates its Graduation Day 2014

Sahyadri College of Nursing celebrated its Graduation Day-2014 in the Campus. Sri. U. T. Khadar, Honorable Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Karnataka, was the Chief Guest for the programme. Students in their graduate attire marched to the venue to the accompaniment of the band followed by the Chief Guest and the faculty. 134 students of the following disciplines; M.Sc Nursing, B.Sc Nursing, and P.B. B.Sc. Nursing took the oath and received their graduation certificates on this auspicious day.

Sri. U.T. Khadar in his message to the students said that a positive attitude towards nursing is important for the nurses. He said that money is not important but peace of mind is important to lead a happy life. The Hon’ble Minister said that Sahyadri College of Nursing is one of the best institutions that prepares young people to face the realities of life. He termed nursing as one of the best professions; the first being teaching. He concluded by conveying his best wishes to the graduates and asked them to strive well and become good nurses but most importantly to be good human beings and bring pride to their families and the institution.

Prof. (Mrs.) Irene Veigas, Principal, College of Nursing, presented a brief report on various activities held during the academic year. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, in his presidential address, said that work, family, health and spirit are related to each other and together they should be involved in their day-to-day life. Mrs. Neetha Kamath welcomed the gathering and Mrs. Shanthi Moras rendered the Vote of Thanks. The programme concluded with the singing of the College Anthem.

Lakshmi Shivarama Prasad S. with 76% has topped the Sahyadri College in the M.Tech Semester I Examination of 2013-14 held by VTU. Girish H. obtained the second position in the college with 75.38% while Navaneeth I. M. with 75.25% stands third bringing the overall percentage score of the department to 88.24%.

Sahyadri Boys’ Team Zonal Volleyball Champions for the third consecutive year

The Sahyadri Boys’ team have emerged the Champions in the VTU Level Zonal Volleyball Tournament for the third consecutive year held at St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore. Mr. Ahmed Aslam, Semester IV, Department of Business Administration, won the `BEST SPIKER’ award and Mr. Abhishek Amin, Semester VI, Department of Mechanical Engineering, won the `BEST SETTER’ award in the Zonal competitions.
The team members are: Mr. Abhishek Amin (Captain), Mr. Ahmed Aslam, Mr. Subramanya, Mr. Suraj Naik, Mr. Deekshith Shetty, Mr. Izas Ahmed, Mr. Mithesh, Mr. Srinidhi, Mr. Harshith, and Mr. Sourabh.

Sahyadri Boys’ Cross-Country team emerge the Champions for the second consecutive year

Sahyadri Boys’ Cross-Country team emerged the Champions for the second consecutive year and the Girls’ team won the Runners-Up trophy held at KVGCE, Sullia. Fifty colleges with 195 boys and 65 girls took part in the meet. Mr. Arpith of Semester VI, Department of Mechanical Engineering won the Second Place in the Boys’ section and Ms. Deepika, Semester IV, Department of Business Administration won the Third Place in the Girls’ section.

The Team members in the boys’ sections are: Arpith, Abhishek Nayak, Rakshith Raj, Simson Rodrigues, Kiran Shahapurkar, Rakshith H.S., Midhun Jyothis, Anish, and Sannidhi Shetty. The team members in the girls’ section are: Deepika, Vidhya, Nandini G., Anusha Hegde, Jayashree, and Nishmitha Kulal.

Corporate Social Responsibility: Village Survey

Every individual and institution in the world has some responsibility to fulfill towards society in helping the needy and leading society towards equilibrium and peace, however small the effort may be. The Sahyadri Family, in a bid to fulfill its social responsibility, has planned to adopt a village. The College’ aim is to help in its overall development in terms of education, environment, and infrastructure and to make it a model village in all aspects. As a first step towards this goal, a team comprising; Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, Dr. Mohandas Bhat, Dean- Academics, Mrs. Shreelatha, AAO, and Mr. Rakshith Shetty, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, visited the village of Meremajal which is situated at a distance of about five kilometres from the college. The team visited two primary schools of the village, an old age home and the gram panchayat of the village guided by Mrs. Vrandha, the Gram Panchayat Chief of Meremajal and Mr. K. K. Poonja, Sevanjali Trust, Farangipet, to scout the possibilities as to how the institution can help in the development of the village.

A rough plan has been drawn up towards this aim and has now been made a part of club activities under the Club Council. We seek that all the members of the Sahyadri Family; faculty and students alike, join hands with us in this noble cause. Mr. Sarvana Praveen Palanisamy addresses Semester VI students

Mr. Sarvana Praveen Palanisamy, Group Manager-HR, HP, Chennai, addressed the pre-final year Computer Science Engineering students on Corporate Expectations. He stressed upon having an identity of oneself and setting the goal; dream to achieve the set goals. He also emphasised the need for acquiring knowledge to achieve success. He briefed the students on how interviews are taking place in corporates and what competencies are expected by them. The session included a video presentation and a question and answer session.

Mr. Sarvana Praveen Palanisamy is an HR Generalist with twelve years of experience in HR and an employee life cycle. He is an expert in the field of PMS (Performance Management System), Competency Mapping, Mobility/Allocation, OD Interventions, Policies and Procedures, and Legal & Statutory Compliance.



Sahyadrians win in inter- collegiate cultural competition

Students of the college took part in the Canara Fest `AAKRITI 2014’, an inter-collegiate cultural competition held at Canara Engineering College. Fifteen Colleges participated in the Fest. The team comprising Vandith Salian, Sachin Tulpule, Manikya Udaya, Prathik and Suraj won the First Place in the Gaming Competition, Sonali Rao and team won the Second Place in the Dance Competition, Karthik Ramakrishna and Neha Dutt won the Second Place in the Debate Competition and Neha Zabber won the Second Place in the Drawing Competition.

Sahyadrians win in BAILAMOS 2K14

BAILAMOS 2K14; a dance fest was held at Sacred Heart College, Madanthyar, Belthangady. Students of the college won the Third Place in the Group Dance Event. Sixteen colleges participated in the Dance Fest.

Sahyadrians win in national level inter–collegiate Management Fest

Mr. Nidhin and Mr. Shararh B., second year students of the Department of Business Management are the Runners-Up in the Marketing event `PG’ in the national level inter–collegiate Management Fest, “ALVA’S AGON 2014”, organised by Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, Moodbidri.

Nandi Toyota Campus Recruitment Drive

Mr. Joseph M. T., Senior HR Executive and Mr. Deepu Stephen, HR Executive, Nandi Toyota, held a Campus Recruitment Drive. Twenty-two students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering attended the drive for the position of Service Engineer. A face-to-face interview was conducted for which the results are awaited.

Industry-Institution interaction with CAMPCO

As part of industry-institution interaction, the Finance and Banking Association of the Department of Business Administration organized a plant visit to CAMPCO, Puttur. The second year MBA Finance and Banking students visited the plant to study various aspects of the business. The students had good interactions with heads of different departments of Campco. Issues relating to quality, sourcing, pricing, marketing, and increasing dollar price were discussed in detail. Professor Lokesh and Professor K. Abhaya Kumar coordinated the visit.

Campco has established its Chocolate Manufacturing factory at Kemminje village in Puttur Taluk in Dakshina Kannada District adopting foreign technical collaboration in chocolate making. The factory was set up in 1986 at an initial investment of RS.116.7million and a licensing capacity to produce 8800 metric tons. The factory also entered into a technical cooperation venture with NESTLE (India) Ltd, for diversifying product brands. It has been producing a variety of products; semi-finished items like Cocoa Mass, Cocoa Butter and Cocoa Powder and finished products in molded line, count line, Chocolate drink etc. CAMPCO chocolate has gained extensive market popularity in India.

Faculty member invited as Judge at National Level Management Fest

Mr. Karthik Raj Kudroli, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration, was invited to judge the national level inter–collegiate management fest, “ALVA’S AGON 2014”, organised by Alvas Institute of Engineering and Technology, Moodbidri. The fest was conducted for both undergraduate and postgraduate students of the management stream.


Faculty members paper Published in an Indian Journal

A paper titled, "Accounting for depreciation of tangible assets and its compliance with schedule XIV of the companies act of 1956- A case study", by Ms. Shilpa Shetty, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration, has been published in the February issue of Paripex- Indian Research Journal.
