Youth and National Development Programme

Swami Jitakamanandaji Adhyaksha, Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru visited Sahyadri along with Swami Srikantananda Maharaj, president, Ramakrishna Math, Pune. They held a session for the students on Youth and National Development.

Swami Jitakamanandaji Adhyaksha has composed many Hindi and Marathi songs on Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda and is also the author of several books in English and Marathi.

Speaking to the students, he highlighted the fact that to develop material condition we need science & technology and creativity. He stated that education should focus on both academic and human excellence. He praised our country, and said that we are lucky to be born in India. He shared his own experience on culture and religion of India. He stated that, youth should develop the ability to learn. He motivated the students to think more and be creative. He said that real peace is within us and we must make our willpower very strong.

Principal Dr. U M Bhushi, thanked Swami Srikantananda Maharaj and Swami Jitakamanandaji for visiting our campus and interacting with the students. He stated that self-awareness is required for each and every individual.

Padma Shri Dr. R. M. Vasagam Inaugurates IC-SMTEE-2016 at Sahyadri

Padma Shri Dr. R. M. Vasagam, Chancellor, Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute, Chennai and the chief guest inaugurated the two-day international conference on Smart Materials and Technologies for Emerging Electronics (IC-SMTEE-2016) organized at Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. In his keynote address, he spoke on national solar mission and also mentioned that performance of catalyst can be improved by employing Nano technology. Thus he kept on highlighting the concept of Nano technology.

The guest of honor Prof. Gottfried Döhler, Max Planck Institute, Germany started his speech by mentioning his first visit to India. He mentioned that there is a drastic change in economic development in India at present when compared to the past. He is pleased to see that the country has utilized the opportunities developing in the field of science and technology and appraised that more and more students should take part in the conference.

The guest of honor Prof. K Byrappa, vice chancellor of Mangalore University conveyed his regards to the institution for conducting this conference. He also mentioned importance of smart materials. He mentioned that he started his career in electronic materials. He then worked on ceramic materials and then moved on to the field of nano technology. He said that convergence of science and technology is important and also mentioned that Sahyadri College of Engineering covers technology side and basic science and the research centre of Sahyadri is an example for all the engineering college of the country.

The chairman Mr. Manjunath Bhandary congratulated the organizers for organizing the conference and shared his happiness for holding this conference. He highlighted the concept of nano technologies in vedas and puranas.

Dr. U M Bhushi Principal welcomed the gathering, Dr. Richard Pinto, Director-CENT gave a brief introduction to the conference. Ninety research scholars/scientists and faculties from various places participated in the program.

Edu DREAMERS team interact with Padma Shri Dr. R M Vasagam

Members of Sahyadri Edu DREAMERS had an interaction with Padma Shri Dr. R M Vasagam, former chairman, NDRF, and Dr. Krishnaswamy Ramachandran, director, NDRF in the company premises. The visitors appreciated the aerial vehicles and products that the company is bringing into the market. Startups by Sahyadrians like Axndx, Whattabiz demonstrated their company profiles and the resource persons were happy with the support the college is providing for the startups. Padma Shri Dr. R M Vasagam also stated that the thrust given to activity-based learning and entrepreneurship will make this a unique system in India in the near future.

Sahyadrians participate in Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan

The students of second semester B.E. participated in the 40th “Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan”, a drive organized by Ramakrishna Mission, Mangaluru. The Principal, Dr U M Bhushi, Vice-Principal Prof. S S Balakrishna, Mrs. Shreelatha U A, AAO, faculty members D Sai Prashanth, Harisha, Sunitha Priya D’Silva, and Naveen Pillar and Student Council members also participated in the drive.

Ramakrishna Mission had initiated 40 weeks’ “Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan” on a special request from Govt. of India on 1st February 2015, to create awareness among the public about cleanliness.

On successful completion of the 40th week of the drive, a thanksgiving ceremony was organized at the Ramakrishna Mutt on February 14. The Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu attended the function as chief guest. In the presence of Swami Jithakamanadaji, secretary Ramakrishna Mission, Mangaluru, Swami Srikantananda Adyakshya, Ramakrishna Matt, Pune. Dr. Vinay Hegde, Honorable Chancellor, NITTE University, Capt. Ganesh Karnik, Member of Legislative Council, Govt of Karnataka, Sri J R Lobo, Member of Legislative Assembly, Mangaluru South, Govt of Karnataka, Prof Ragotham Rao and Sri K Lakshminararyan, GGM, MRPL were present at the ceremony.

Nitya Priya Daughter of Principal Gets First Rank in the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF)

Nitya Priya, the daughter of Principal, Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi and a seventh standard student of Cambridge School, Mangalore, secured the First rank at the School level and the City level in the Science Olympiad. She was ranked 96th at the State level and 160th at the International level.

She was also adjudged the Best Basketball Player at the 7th James Naishmith Cup 2016 held at Mangalore recently.

The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) is an educational foundation and a non-profit organisation based in New Delhi, India. SOF promotes science, mathematics, introductory IT knowledge and English language skills amongst school children in India. It organises four Olympiads annually, namely the National Cyber Olympiad (NCO), the National Science Olympiad (NSO), the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) and the International English Olympiad (IEO). The SOF requires participants to register through their schools, rather than individually.

Sayona A Joseph with 78.33% has topped the college in the VTU Semester I 2015-16 examination held in December. Mohammed Subaid with 76.78% obtained the second position in the college while Prajna with 74.56% stands third. Eleven students secured a distinction, seventy-eight a first class and thirty-three students a second class bringing the overall percentage score of the department to 72.45%.

Campus Recruitment Drives

Mphasis Limited conducted a campus recruitment drive for engineering students of the 2016 batch. Twelve students are selected including four from Sahyadri.


Twenty-nine students of the college have been shortlisted by the Anglo Eastern Maritime Training Center in the campus recruitment drive.



Thirty-two students have been shortlisted by Tayana Software Solutions (P) Ltd in the recruitment drive held in the campus. Mr. Rathan Rao, Chief Technical Officer, Tayana Software Solutions (P) Ltd accompanied by the panelists on the recruitment team facilitated the entire process.

Sahyadri Whiz Quiz – College Round

Sahyadri Whiz Quiz Phase I (MCQ round) was organized at St. Aloysius College, Rosario Degree College, SDM Degree College, Mangalore, Carmel College, Modankaup and S.V.S. College, Bantwal. Close to 1000 students from the final year in all five colleges participated in teams of three each in their respective colleges. Students took part in the quiz competition with enthusiasm and were keen to be selected for the Sahyadri Whiz Quiz Grand Finale. Student volunteers of Sahyadri compered the programme and played the role of quiz masters, score keepers and time keepers. Students received appreciation from the management of their respective colleges.

College, Bantwal extended their wholehearted support for the smooth conduct of the programme.

Sahyadri Whiz Quiz Semi-Final Round

Five parallel sessions of Sahyadri Whiz Quiz Semi-Final Round were held at SDM Degree College and St. Agnes Degree College, Mangalore. Thirty teams participated in this round from SDM Degree College and forty teams participated from St. Agnes Degree College. Seventeen teams from SDM and twenty teams from St. Agnes qualified in the semi-final round for the Grand Finale to be held at Sahyadri on the 11th of March 2016.

Professor Devi Prabha, HOD, Dept. of Commerce and Professor Gauthami, St. Agnes Degree College extended their support in making all arrangements for the smooth conduct of the programme. Sahyadri MBA students of the first year were given an opportunity to take the lead to host the Oral Quiz round.

‘Waste to Best’ competition conducted by `Logical Indian’- The Jugaad Club

A competition to create something out of waste was conducted as part of the activities of ‘Logical Indian’- The Jugaad Club. The students created a variety of items such as a pen stand, a shelf, a doll, a doll house, toy cars, an aeroplane, a rocket, a table lamp, hanging lanterns, and bracelets out of waste materials from plastic bottles, empty cardboard boxes, rubber bands etc. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, chairman, Mrs. Prasanna Bhandary, secretary, Bhandary Foundation and Dr. U.M. Bhushi, principal were present on the occasion and applauded the efforts of students. The Chairman addressed the students and encouraged students to be the torch bearers and inspire other students to be part of such activity. He also emphasised the importance of involving oneself in such creative activities. Mr. Naveen Pillar, HoD, department of art and culture judged the event.

Arpitha, Sajana, Prathistha, Deeksha and Sarika-team 5 bagged the first place followed by team 4 - Mayuri, Ritika, Tejaswini, Sapna, Nagraj, and Prathamesh and team 6 - Sagarika Rai, Saeeksha, Yashna, Tanuvi, Yashashwi, and Santhosh jointly winning the second place.

Suresh Kumar Durgappa VP-Solutions Delivery IonIdea Visits Sahyadri

Mr. Suresh Kumar Durgappa, VP-Solutions Delivery, IonIdea Engage Excellence interacted with the Dreamers and Challengers team of Sahyadri. He was previously part of Aptra Technology (P) Ltd of Sahyadri. He appreciated the developments in the college in a short span of time and assured that his services are available to students for their projects.

Sahyadrians Create Market-Ready Product: the Xenon SmartPlug

For the first time in the history of Sahyadri, students have created a market-ready product named Xenon SmartPlug; an app enabled smart home automation device. Prithviraj Shetty, Fenil Mehta, Rohan Shetty and Lenson Saldanha have been working on this product for over a year now and have overcome several difficulties such as timely labour and mass manufacturing the product. Xenon SmartPlug is marketed through their very own start-up Axndx Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

The Xenon SmartPlug is a Bluetooth powered smart device used to wirelessly control electronic appliances. The Xenon SmartPlug has automated switching of devices after they have finished their task through the use of scheduled switching, hence even if the user forgets or isn’t present to manually switch off the device, it is done so by the SmartPlug. It even has an additional feature for controlling smartphone charging where the user can set the levels where the plug can start and stop charging the phone connected to the plug. Prof. Likewin Thomas Talks on Machine Learning

Prof. Likewin Thomas, Research Scholar at NIT-K, Surathkal gave a talk on "Machine Learning" for the pre-final year students of the department of Information Science & Engineering. Prof. Thomas elucidated the influence of machine learning on the upcoming research domains.

Civil Engineering Students Bag Second Place in BITS PILANI “MY GREEN IDEA 2016” Contest

The Edison team with Nihal Chand, Jeethan Grinal Rodrigues, Nirmith Ashok Bangera, Chinmay Bharan M.R and Cavin Vinjay Mascarenhas, students of civil engineering bagged the second place with a cash prize of Rs. 4,000/- in the BITS PILANI “MY GREEN IDEA 2016” National Level Competition at BITS Pilani, Goa. The students presented their idea “Bio Gas Production from Foodwaste with a New Technique Automated Digestor.” Twenty-two teams from all over India participated in the competition.

Sahyadrians Win Most Interactive Exhibits title at 103rd Indian Science Congress

Achala R Shetty, Shreya and Preetham Kumar of Sahyadri Edu DREAMERS R&D Pvt. Ltd. were awarded with certificates by Dr. H. Honnegowda, Special Director, DST, MD, KSteps. They were awarded the certificates for being one of the exhibitors under the Department of IT, BT and ST and bagging the Most Interactive Exhibits title at the recently held 103rd Indian Science Congress - Pride of India Expo at the University of Mysore. Reputed organisations and industries took part in this event. ISRO, DRDO, Indian Posts, NRDC and many others had put up their stalls during the India Expo.

Staff Member Wins First Prize & Title Winner in Dakshina Kannada -2016’ Body Building Competition

Mr. Jagadish Poojary, staff member in the department of mathematics and trainer at Sahyadri multigymnasium won the First prize in the ‘Dakshina Kannada -2016’ Body Building Competition held at the Town Hall, Mangalore and was awarded with the title winner. He has been selected for Mr. Karnataka, State Level Body Building Competition 2016 which is scheduled on the 27th of February, 2016.

Oratocrats Gavel Club Activities

Oratocrats Gavel Club conducted a session with the theme “Journey.” Akshay B Karanth , Semester IV, electronics and communication engineering and Mohammed Zamil, Semester VIII, mechanical engineering gave a speech on ‘”Journey” as per their own perspective. Various other activities based on the theme such as Table Topics, Treasure Hunt and many more fun activities were conducted.
