Job & Skill Training Camp Held at Sahyadri

The much awaited Job & Skill Training Camp under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), a Govt. of India, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship was inaugurated in the august presence of Sri Nalin Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament, D. K., Capt. Ganesh Karnik, Hon’ble Opposition Party Chief Whip, Karnataka Legislative Council, Sri Manish Kumar, CEO, Rooman Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, the Training Partner for National skill Development Corporation, Sri N K Mohapatra, CEO, ESSCI and other dignitaries from government and the industry. Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management was the venue partner and Rooman Technologies was the training partner.

Hiring executives from sixty-four companies from IT, ITES, Retail, Banking, Telecom, Healthcare, Consulting and many more sectors converged at the campus. 3000 SSLC, pre-university, graduate, postgraduate and diploma holders visited the Job & Skill Training Camp in the hope of getting a job in one of these reputed companies. 120 candidates received offer letters on the spot. 900 candidates have been shortlisted for the second round of interview and 500 candidates have enrolled themselves for the PMKYV training.

Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management in his inspiring speech to the gathering said that a degree is only a passport to getting a job but with barely 2% of unskilled youth coming out of colleges, has created a big lacuna in the workforce. He thanked MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, for providing the opportunity to conduct the job fair in the Sahyadri Campus and the people who worked hard for this programme.

Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, DK, explained the importance of gaining skills to earn ones livelihood. He said that the one underlying aim of conducting such a camp is to create job opportunities for the youth of the country. He added that the Job & Skill Training Camp is a small initiative to make the Prime Minister’s dream come true. He thanked the chairman and the management for providing the venue for the occasion. N. K. Mohapatra, CEO, ESSCI, in his speech to the gathering said that the government is committed to ensure that youth develop skills to match industry requirement and this is where Rooman Technologies acts as the bridge between the companies and the unskilled youth to train them to match industry requirement.

Manish Kumar the CEO of Rooman Technologies, the Training Partner, explained how the company trains unskilled youth. He also gave hope to those not selected saying that they can still enroll for a training program by registering on the online portal (www.naukari.com). He said that there are plenty of requirements for skilled manpower. He briefly threw light on The National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) which will come into effect from November this year.

NSQF is a competency-based framework that organizes all qualifications according to a series of levels of knowledge, skills and aptitude. These levels, graded from one to ten, are defined in terms of learning outcomes which the learner must possess regardless of whether they are obtained through formal, non-formal or informal learning. All other frameworks, including the NVEQF (National Vocational Educational Qualification Framework) released by the Ministry of HRD, stand superseded by the NSQF.

The Valedictory of the Job & Skill Training Camp

Sri Rajeev Pratap Singh Rudy, Union Minister of State Skill Development and Entrepreneurship & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India, addressed the audience through Skype saying that he was extremely happy to know that 3000 candidates participated in the Job & Skill Training Camp. On behalf of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and on behalf of his ministry he congratulated all the candidates and thanked MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and also the chairman, Manjunath Bhandary for organizing the camp. He assured that as the economy grows more sectors and jobs will be created for the youth.

The Valedictory of the Job & Skill Training Camp saw a host of dignitaries such as Nalin Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament, D K, Capt. Ganesh Karnik, Hon’ble Opposition Party Chief Whip, Karnataka Legislative Council, Sri Purushotham Chithrapura, Deputy Mayor, Mangaluru City Corporation, Sri Manish Kumar, CEO, Rooman Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, along with Sri Prakash Kotian, Centre Director, Rooman Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Mangaluru and Sri Rajesh Naik U. who coordinated the entire event.

Manish Kumar the CEO of Rooman Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, congratulated all the candidates and wished them the best of luck. He thanked everyone for making the event a grand success. He promised that shortly a training centre in collaboration with Sahyadri will be opened in the campus.

Students and HR executives gave their feedback with one student saying, “No one has gone back disappointed.”

Capt. Ganesh Karnik, Hon’ble Opposition Party Chief Whip, Karnataka Legislative Council, shared his experience and said that students should hone their skills when in college itself so that when they finish their course, there are employable with the required skills. He advised that this camp should be an eye-opener for all the candidates and the learning received today should be taken as a learning curve and this should be converted into an opportunity. He ended by quoting,” A thousand-mile-long journey commences with the first step in the right direction.” Nalin Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament, DK assured that all the candidates shortlisted will be provided jobs and reiterated that students should not lose hope but develop skills to make them employable. He thanked the chairman and the management for the success of the event.

One-day Training Programme held for the Department of Labour at Sahyadri

The Department of Labour, Government of Karnataka organized a one-day training session for the inspectors and officers of the Department of Labour at Sahyadri on Web Portal, software implementation for unorganized workers. The departmental officers and inspectors from seven districts of Hassan region participated in the event. The programme aimed at empowerment of officers in E-governance and IT platform for public deliverance system. The program was coordinated by Asst. Labour Commissioner, Mr. D. G. Nagesh of the Mangalore Division.

Dr. D. S. Vishwanath, Commissioner of Labour, Bangalore, along with other senior officials of the department visited the campus as part of the event. During the visit, Dr. D. S. Vishwanath met and interacted with the Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary and the Principal, Dr. U M Bhushi.

Dr. G. Manjunath, Joint Labour Commissioner thanked the college management for the excellent facilities provided and also expressed his desire for future collaboration and networking with the institute to create better understanding of governance and social inclusion among the student community.

Semester VI Mechanical Engineering Students Receive TRIP VGST Grant

Safiyulla and Varun Pakkala, Semester VI, mechanical engineering students under the guidance of Prof. Rathishchandra R. Gatti, department of mechanical engineering, were awarded the Technology Related Innovative Projects (TRIP) VGST grant from the Vision Group of Science & Technology for their project entitled "Affordable Hybrid Solar – Mechanical Powered Agricultural Dryer for Rural People". Currently, the student team is working to build an affordable drying machine to dry agricultural products using fresnel lens optics. SAHYADRI International Journal of Research officially launched with Vol. 1, Issue 1

K.P Murthy, Consultant-Skill Development, KP Murthy & Associates, officially launched the online version and Rajashekar Hiremath, President, Flexitron, launched the print version of the international journal titled ‘SAHYADRI International Journal of Research’. The journal has appeared online: www.sijr.in. The email address of this journal is : [email protected]. ISSN number for both online and print version is pending.

K.P Murthy said that this is a great effort by the editorial team as well as design team of the journal; he also stated that only a very few institutions have their own international journals. Hiremath stated that this is an important milestone in the history of the institute and he encouraged students and faculty members to publish their original findings and innovations in this journal. Prof. Richard Pinto, Chief Editor of this journal acknowledged the effort by the editorial team and design team and congratulated them for the launch of this journal. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, stated that this is a great beginning and gives a platform for faculty and students to publish their original papers. Prof. S.S Balakrishna, Vice Principal was present during the function. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, congratulated the editorial team and conveyed his best wishes.

Sahyadri Whiz Quiz: Phase I Held at Kanachur Degree College

Phase I of the Sahyadri Whiz Quiz was held at Kanachur Degree College, Mangalore. Prof. Avinash of Kanachur Degree College extended his support in making all arrangements for the smooth conduct of the programme. Sahyadri MBA students of the first year were given an opportunity to take the lead of hosting both the written quiz and the oral quiz round. Students were apprised of the mega event "Panel Discussion on Budget 2016-17" and received overwhelming interest to participate in this event. They also addressed the students on Career Progression and the importance of 'Self- Evaluation'. Students were also given insight about PGCET incase they plan to pursue their MBA.

Sahyadri Whiz Quiz Round II Held at Various Colleges

Sahyadri Whiz Quiz Phase 2 (Quiz round) was organized at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. Faculty members of the department along with student volunteers executed the second round successfully. Twenty-two teams consisting of three each competed with each other and 14 teams were selected to participate in the finale round at Sahyadri on 11, March 2016.

Sahyadri Whiz Quiz Round 2 was conducted in St. Philomena College, Puttur. 72 Students of final year B Com and BBM participated. The final round was conducted in three different sections. HOD of Commerce and Management Dept Prof. Maxim Carlo and faculty coordinator Prof. Chandrashekar were present during the program.

The second round of the Sahyadri Whiz Quiz was conducted in Vivekananda College, Puttur. 120 students of final year B Com and BBM participated with full enthusiasm and vigor. The final round was conducted in five different sections. Prof. Venkatarana Bhat the HOD of the commerce and management department and faculty coordinators Professors Ravikala and Rekha applauded the event.

Chairman Interacts with Trustee Member of MIT

The Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary met and interacted with Mr. Siddarth Shetty, one of the trustee members of Moodalkatte Institute of Technology (MIT) Kundapura. During their interaction, they discussed the pattern of the education system adopted and practiced at their respective institutes.

Sahyadrians Create Market-Ready Product: the Xenon SmartPlug

For the first time in the history of Sahyadri, students have created a market-ready product named Xenon SmartPlug; an app enabled smart home automation device. Prithviraj Shetty, Fenil Mehta, Rohan Shetty and Lenson Saldanha have been working on this product for over a year now and have overcome several difficulties such as timely labour and mass manufacturing the product. Xenon SmartPlug is marketed through their very own start-up Axndx Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

The Xenon SmartPlug is a Bluetooth powered smart device used to wirelessly control electronic appliances. The Xenon SmartPlug has automated switching of devices after they have finished their task through the use of scheduled switching, hence even if the user forgets or isn’t present to manually switch off the device, it is done so by the SmartPlug. It even has an additional feature for controlling smartphone charging where the user can set the levels where the plug can start and stop charging the phone connected to the plug. Pooja Selected to Head and Facilitate Google’s Applied CS for Android Program

Putting Sahyadri permanently on the radar of Google, Pooja, Semester VI, computer science & engineering has been selected as the facilitator for the "Applied CS for Android Program" in limited number of campuses in India. Pooja will be heading the program, which will run parallel to the Google Student Ambassador Program scheduled to start next year. She has cleared two rounds of selection (application round and YouTube round) and will now attend a bootcamp in Google’s Office at Bangalore on the 5th and 6th of March, 2016.

The "Applied Science for Android" Program will enable students to adopt the algorithms used by engineers at Google and help them develop their technical abilities.

Indian Engineering Olympiad held in the campus

Indian Engineering Olympiad (IEO) a pan-India event that offers a real test of engineering aptitude for the engineering students in their respective fields on a national platform was conducted in the campus.

Students in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year engineering across the college had appeared for the exam. 102 students took up the test. The format and the syllabus of the exam are designed akin to many competitive tests that the students are expected to go through in their further academic & career pursuits. The exam was conducted in two slots, morning and afternoon.

MBA Students attend workshop on Equity & ESOP at IIM Bangalore

Eight MBA students accompanied by faculty members of the department attended a workshop on “Equity & ESOP” at IIM Bangalore. Prof. Sabarinathan, Associate Professor Chairperson, N S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL), outlined on the equity for startups and gave inputs on funding hierarchy. He also highlighted about the sources of equity for startups. Mr. M.J. Cherian, Co-Founder and CEO of Keynote ESOP, introduction about ESOP- Employee Stock Options Plan is an option to purchase a sale at future date at a predetermined price for exchange of services. The panel discussion which included Mr. Parag Dhol, Managing Director at Inventus Capital Partners, addressed the queries regarding funding and ESOPS.

Sahyadri Girls’ Volleyball Team on a Winning Spree: Champions for the 6th Consecutive Year

Sahyadri Girls’ Volleyball team are the Champions for the sixth consecutive year in the VTU Inter-zone Volleyball Tournament held at AIT, Bengaluru, defeating NMAMIT, Nitte in the finals.

In another match played earlier in the week, the team won the Championship Trophy in the VTU Rest of Bangalore Zone Volleyball Tournament held at GSSIT, Mysore, defeating NMAMIT, Nitte in the finals. More than eighteen engineering colleges participated in this tournament.

The team captained by Ashmitha Rodrigues had Yashwitha, Tanya K Shetty, Lipitha M G, Likhitha M G, Jyotsna Alva, Gowri Ganesh, Anvitha P R, Swathi, B Shwetha, Prathiksha Bhat and Rakshitha K as the team players.
