Mr. Krishna Kumar, Chief Technology Officer of Pratian Technologies visited Sahyadri and interacted with Students, Faculty and Management. He presented on the Pratian Global Innovation (PGI) Lab which would be set up in the Campus and said that Sahyadri is going to pioneer as the Innovation Centre. Highlighting the current Education System he said that Education is now going to be inter-disciplinary and it is no more about the degree but about imparting skills. He also brought to light the emergence of online universities. He highlighted the efforts of Pratian in creating pool of Talents to meet the need of Employability, Deployability and Billability and thereby overcome these challenges. He further clarified that the Pratian Ecosystem includes Learning Skills, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He concluded stating that each one has infinite potential in them and urged the faculty and students to choose from the various natural abilities and further collaborate with PGI Ecosystem which intends to set up Development Labs, R&D Labs and Entrepreneurship Cell at Sahyadri.

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) visits Sahyadri

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) visits Sahyadri Commandant Kaustubh Mulye and his team of assistant commandants viz. Dhaneswaran, Siddharth and Rahul Sharma visited Sahyadri to give an orientation talk on the opportunities in Indian Coast Guard and recruitment process. Several students and faculties attended the talk. The team met and interacted with all the in-house industries and expressed their views and appreciation in the institution’s effort in putting ideas and skills into real time projects.

ICG is the fourth biggest in the world and has 14 district headquarters and 5 regional headquarters. Mangalore is the third headquarter after Porbandar and Mumbai. ICG carries out operations on air, land and sea during both peace and war times. They maintain the water boundary of 200 nautical miles around the Indian coast. Their functions include Disaster and pollution management, anti-piracy and smuggling prevention, protection of maritime environment and also providing aid to disaster victims.

Sahyadri receives guests from Vivekananada College of Engineering & Technology Dr. M.S. Govinde Gowda, Principal, VCET, Puttur visited Sahyadri. He was accompanied by Dr. Shrikanth Rao S.K., Professor and Head, Department of Electronics & Communication, VCET. Our chairman received the guests with warmth and cordiality. The chairman was too happy to take the guests around the campus and talk to them about the various achievements of the college ever since its inception. They interacted with the management too.

The VCET guests visited and viewed the innovative labs, in-house start-ups and student-centric initiatives of Sahyadri. On having visited these, they turned in unison towards the chairman and lauded him for the unique education set-up established at Sahyadri.

Chairman of SKF Boilers and Driers Pvt Ltd visits the Mechanical Engineering Department


Sahyadri Mechanical Engineering Department is graced by a visitor Mr G. Ramakrishna Achar, Chairman & Managing Director, SKF Boilers and Driers Pvt Ltd, Belavi, Moodabidri visited Sahyadri and interacted with faculty of Mechanical Engineering. During the interaction he spoke extensively on the importance of water resource management and sewage treatment plant. He also spoke on grain science technology and made a suggestion Sahyadri to float a couple of courses on the topic.

Furthermore, Mr. Achar also extended his whole-hearted support to build an in-house production center that would manufacture water purifiers. The department also explored the possibilities of setting up a skill development centre that would train students and faculty in the field of food processing. The programme is conducted under the patronage of Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE).

MBA Faculty takes Oath as the Founder President of JCI Mangalore Disha

Prof. Sushma V from the Dept. of Business Administration-MBA took oath as the Founder President of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Mangalore Disha during the Installation Ceremony of the Local Organization Member (LOM) in the presence of JCI Sen. Arpit Hathi, the National President.

JCI India is a voluntary organization, membership based NGO working in India for developing the leadership skills of young men and women of this country. Sushma, now leads a team of 20 (Women Only) comprising of women entrepreneurs, teachers, corporate employees, students and home-makers.

Recently, Sahyadri students and staff took an oath on the occasion of JCI Integrity Day since Honesty and Integrity are the foundations of leadership. Apart from this, there are events and programmes lined up to be organized in collaboration with JCI for the student development.

The students and staff of Sahyadri participated in the Shramadhan at Polali Rajarajeshwari Temple as of part of Sahyadri NSS Unit community service programme. More than 40 students and Staff volunteers engaged themselves in clearing out the debris from the temple’s construction site and cleaned the surroundings of the temple premises. The volunteers involved themselves enthusiastically in the service. Mr. Devdas Hegde, Trustee, Bhandary Foundation and Ms. Shreelatha U A, NSS Programme Coordinator & Academic Administrative Officer coordinated the programme. The temple management and the general public were pleased by the volunteering efforts at the temple premises.

A Three-Day Orientation Course in Value Education was organized at Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education (RIMSE), Mysore. A total of 29 Sahyadrians comprising of teaching and non-teaching staff attended this programme.

Day One started with a session “Siachen Glacier – Past, Present and Future” by Col. Mahendra Babu. He spoke about the unforgiving Siachen Glacier and the life of Indian soldiers who are defending the world's most dangerous battlefield to save our Motherland. The second session was by Dr. K. Anantharamu on “Values of Life”. He explained the topic by giving the fittest illustrations and by narration of short stories.

The afternoon session was on the topic “Yogic Walk towards Total Wellness”, by Dr. Raghavendra Pai. Dr. Pai gave a glimpse on how to keep oneself well and fit by doing Yoga. Post this; there was a tour of the campus, after which short films were shown on the life of two renowned personalities. The moral imparted through these films is how to keep moving forward relentlessly even in extremely trying times.

On Day Two there was a rejuvenating session on “How to Face Challenges in Life” by Sri Subramanyam. He spoke on how to face various challenges that life throws in our path. Only when we bravely face them it can change our life. Next, was a session on “Leadership Qualities” by Sri D.T. Ramanujam. This session was a stress buster with a touch of humour. He explained about the inherent attributes that make great leaders. The afternoon session was on the topic “Constitutional Values” by Prof. Suresh Kumar. This was an eye-opener for those who have very little or no knowledge on the topic.

Day Three started with the visit to RIMSE’s gigantic library and museum of international acclaim. The museum showcases the multicultural offerings of our dynamic country. The programme was concluded with a formal valedictory function. The participants shared their experiences at RIMSE. On the whole this programme was a cultural journey of Indian core values like Constitutional values and Democracy, Yoga, Vasudaiva Kutumbakam, Atithi Devo Bhava and Spiritual Path.

IOT Challenge 2019 organized by Dept. of Information Science and Engineering was inaugurated by the Chief Guest - Mr. Ameer, Embedded Trainer, i3indya Technologies in the presence of the Principal - Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte. During the Day One, Mr. Ameer held an interaction session with faculty on IOT (Internet of Things). Later, a Workshop on IoT was held which had 110 participants from 10 different colleges comprising of 30 teams. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Ameer along with Mr. Sudhanshu who is also a Trainer.

Dept. of Civil Engineering in association with SPACE, organized a Technical Talk on “Application of Drones in Civil Engineering” which was facilitated by Mr. Midhun Jyothis P C, Founder & CEO, Flotanomers R & D Pvt Ltd. During his talk, he briefed about FLOTANOMERS and the various job opportunities available for Civil engineering graduates in the field of Land Surveying, GIS application, Agriculture Survey, Aerial Survey etc. He stressed on the application of Drone survey for health monitoring, Boundary mapping of an area, Land use mapping of an urban area, Suitable road way mapping using Aerial photographs and so on. He motivated students to explore the field of Aerial Survey using Drones.

In view of encouraging the students of the department to pursue higher education and competitive examinations, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering organized an Awareness Programme on GATE. Prof. Ananth Pai, Proprietor & Faculty-Academy in Pursuit of Engineering Excellence (APEX) facilitated the session. In his session, he briefed about the importance of GATE in the career growth, core subjects involved in the competitive exams, information about reference sources and also the opportunities after clearing competitive exams.

Division F, District 92 of Toastmasters International had an exuberant Division Conference, CONFAB 2019 and EMPARCH 2019, at Sahyadri campus.

CONFAB 2019 comprised of International Speech Contest, Evaluation Contest and Table Topics and - an event exclusively meant for college students. It was vibrant and brilliant to see the enthusiasm and flamboyant extravaganza in this event. Mr Samarth Shenoy from Sahyadri Toastmasters Club who qualified at the Area level participated and put up a good fight. We congratulate him for his effort and wish him the best for his future endeavours.

EMPARCH is an initiative by District 92 of Toastmasters International, to encourage college students in public speaking. We had 8 colleges who participated in the contest enthusiastically. The events comprised of Improv, Turncoat and Humorous Speech. Improv is a contest where students have come up with their own imagination. In the Turncoat contest Shagufa Bava of Sahyadri won third place.

The six contests through the day were a wonderful learning experience in building excellent communication and leadership skills. Sahyadri Toastmasters Club also won two awards; Fast Five Award for achieving Five DC points and Fast 50 for more than fifty percent members enrolling into the Pathways Program.

IoT & Embedded System Exhibition held in the Campus

In joint collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Institute of Electrical and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), Department of Electronics & Communication, Sahyadri and RDL Technologies; and as a part of Industry & Academic Interaction, a One-day exhibition on IoT & Embedded System was conducted at the Department of Electronics & Communication, Sahyadri Campus.

The exhibition witnessed the active participation of more than 40+ batches of final year engineering students. The students demonstrated the products at the exhibition. The second and third year students utilized their time in knowing the technical details and understanding the various applications of IOT and Embedded Systems in real life. The exhibition was arranged under three segments such as Industrial Sensors, Development & Prototyping and Products.

Motive of the exhibition was to create awareness among students about recent ongoing research, issues and challenges faced by industry and solutions for the same. Final Year students familiarised themselves with the various industrial products and solutions along with the driving technology to further transfer the knowledge gained by them to the next generation of young students. Large number of students visited the exhibition. The students got motivated to involve in industry-academic research activities which helps to bring out budding entrepreneurial talents to foreground. More than 500 audience visited the exhibition to take advantage of the same.

RDL Technologies made the excellent full-fledged arrangement to the exhibition by providing essential sensors, development boards, and products invented by them along with the whole day support by the entire RDL Team.

Event coordinators acknowledged gratefully the various departments who collaborated to conduct this exhibition successful. Grateful thanks are also extended to one and all who supported the exhibition in every way possible.

Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering organized a workshop on “Research Paper Publication and its importance” for final year students. The first session was facilitated by Prof. Bharath Bhushan, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering in which he emphasized on skills needed to write a Research Paper for reputed indexed journals. He also gave information about the standards of various journals and conferences. This was followed by hands-on session on Paper and Report writing skills using Latex by Dr. Pushpalatha K, Dept of Computer Science & Engineering. LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting system which includes features designed for the production of technical and scientific documentation.

Officer from IIM Indore visits the MBA Department Mr. K V Satyanathan Nambiar, Officer from IIM Indore visited the Dept. of Business Administration-MBA and had a discussion with Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA.

In September 2018, a total of 22 students from the MBA department took part in a Management Fest organized at IIM Indore. On viewing the registration list and learning that students from Mangaluru are participating in the Management Fest, Mr. Satyanathan was overwhelmed and made sure our students get the best hospitality which further strengthened the bond between IIM Indore and Sahyadri. On his personal visit to Mangaluru this time along with his spouse, he made it a point to visit Sahyadri as he had heard of our institution from our students. He was taken around the campus, made to view the in-house start-ups and industries and also the various student-centric initiatives. He was amazed to see what Sahyadri has to offer for its students and also the community and appreciated the Management, Staff and students.

Mr. Nambiar has further assured to get us connected to the MDP coordinator of IIM Indore for customized programmes on upskilling the MBA faculty.

IMA organized Floodlight Cricket Tournament at Sahyadri River-Side Cricket Stadium The Mangaluru branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA) has organized a floodlight cricket tournament at Sahyadri River-Side Cricket Stadium. Pro Vice-Chancellor of Nitte University Dr. M Shantharam Shetty inaugurated the tournament. The tournament saw participation from six teams. ‘Hansi's Hurricanes’ emerged as the Winner and ‘Pavan's Panthers’ were the Runners-Up. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman of Bhandary Foundation was the Guest during the Valedictory Ceremony and distributed the Trophy and Cash Prize to the Winners.

Campus Recruitment Drive- UniCourt UniCourt conducted a Pool Campus Recruitment drive for the BE/ B.Tech, engineering students of 2019 outgoing batch. A four member team comprising of Mr. Prashanth Shenoy, Director, Mr. Manoj K.J., HR Manager, Mr. Amit Thapa, Software Engineer and Mr. Akshay, Software Engineer were at the campus to facilitate the process. A total of 156 students from pool colleges participated in the drive. The results are awaited.

Career guidance talk for Civil Engineering Students A career guidance talk was organized for the pre-final year students on What? Why? and How? GATE. Mr. Someshwar Rao Kola, Faculty, Academy in Pursuit of Engineering Excellence (APEX) emphasized on the importance of attempting GATE exams. He also stated that it is a benchmarking criterion in Private Sector companies and employment in Public Sector Units (PSUs).

Mr. Someshwar Rao Kola educated the students on how to crack GATE facilities provided by APEX and also the exam pattern.

First Year Engineering Students attend Three-Day Camp at World Konkani Centre, Mangaluru

Three-Day Camp at World Konkani Centre Vineet Nayak S, M Vishwas Kamath, K Samarth N Kamath, Karthik and Vrashank Rao from first year engineering attended the Three-Day Camp at World Konkani Centre, Shakti Nagar, Mangaluru. This camp focused primarily on Self Development, Communication Skills and Leadership ability. It also included a Webinar with the students pursuing their Master in the United States of America. These 5 students were at the peak with full dedication and excitement during the three-day event. It also helped in building connectivity among most of the students from different parts of the country. This centre, started in the year 2009 provides scholarship opportunities to various konkani speaking students every year and grooms them as future leaders.

Workshop on Big Data Analytics using Hadoop A workshop on "Big Data Analytics using Hadoop" was conducted by the Dept. of Information Science and Engineering in association with STAISE, ISTE and IEI. The resource person of the workshop was Prof. Manjunath Mulimani, Research Scholar, NITK Surathkal. He gave an introduction to Big Data Analytics and conducted hands-on session on “MapReduce Programming for Big Data Analytics using Python”. He also discussed the topics such as MapReduce and Data Transformation, MapReduce Programming Model, Workflow of MapReduce, Running MapReduce Job and Hadoop versions.
