Chairman Chief Guest at the 75th All India Inter-University Athletics Championship

Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, was the Chief Guest at the medal ceremony of the 75th All India Inter-University Athletics Championship held at Swarajya Maidan, Moodbidri, Mangalore.

Dr. Pavana Prabhakar Young Indian Researcher in the U.S. Receives “Best Young Researcher” Award

Dr. Pavana Prabhakar, Professor in the Mechanical Engineering department, University of Texas at El Paso and daughter of Dr. D. L. Prabhakara, Director, Sahyadri Educational Institutions, has been awarded the “Best Young Researcher” by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), The United States of America, through its Young Investigator Research Program for her research work on `A Novel Multiscale Design of Interfaces for Polymeric Composites and Bonded Joints using Additive Manufacturing.’ She is a Professor of the University of Texas and is sponsored by our Chairman. It is a great honour for us and we congratulate our Chairman and Dr. Pavana Prabhakar.

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research, The United States of America, announced that it will award approximately $16.6 million in grants to 57 scientists and engineers from 42 research institutions and small businesses who submitted winning research proposals through the Air Force's Young Investigator Research Program (YIP).

This year AFOSR received over 200 proposals in response to the AFOSR broad agency announcement solicitation in major areas of interest to the U. S. Air Force. Those selected will receive the grants over a 3-year period.

The YIP is open to scientists and engineers at research institutions across the United States who received Ph.D. or equivalent degrees in the last five years and who show exceptional ability and promise for conducting basic research.

The objective of this program is to foster creative basic research in science and engineering, enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators, and increase opportunities for the young investigators to recognize the Air Force mission and the related challenges in science and engineering.

Dr. Pavana Prabhakar earned her Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and M.S. Civil and Environmental Engineering (Structures), University of California, Berkeley, B.Tech. Civil and Environmental Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Karnataka. She has received several honours and awards and her research papers have been published in international journals.

Rakshith K. M. with 83.52% has topped the Sahyadri College in the MCA, Semester I Examination of 2014-15 held by VTU. Ramya obtained the second position in the College with 82.19% while Dhanushree with 80.29% stands third. Eleven students secured a first class with distinction and six students secured a first class.

VTU Semester VII B. E. Results

The VTU results of Semester VII of all Engineering streams are declared. Out of 486 students who appeared for the VTU Examination 2014-15, 76 students passed with distinction and 169 with a first class.

Finishing School Programme for Civil Engineers Gets Off to a Flying Start

The ten-day Finishing School Programme `on Building Construction, Supervision and Management’ organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management in association with Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India), Mangaluru Center, Indian Concrete Institute, Mangaluru Center, Ramco, Ultratech Cements and CADD Centre at Sahyadri campus was inaugurated by the chief guest Prof. M. S. Shetty and Er. Ranganath Aithal, Chairman, ACCE (I), Mangaluru Centre and Er. Anil Baliga, the Guests of Honor.

The programme began with a presentation on the “Brief Survey of Advancement of Concrete Technology” by Prof. M. S. Shetty followed by a talk on “Purpose of Finishing School Programme” by Er. Premananda Shenoy, Chief Consultant & Managing Partner, Roy & Shenoy. Assistant Professor, Charline Stella Samuel spoke on “Aesthetics of Buildings” and Assistant Professor, Neelakshi Joshi on “Green Buildings.”

On the succeeding days, Dr. K. S. Babunarayan, Professor, NITK gave a presentation on “Analysis and Design of Buildings.” The participants were taken on a site visit by Er. Anirudh, Site Engineer and were shown how to read structural drawings at site followed by a study of “Pile Foundation.” Er. S. B. Manjunath Senior Manager, Civil Aid Technoclinic Pvt. Ltd., Mangaluru, gave a presentation on “Testing and Acceptance Criteria of Building Materials.” Er. Siddesh Kamath, Plant Assistant Manager, RMC (ready mix concrete) delivered a talk on “Correct Steps in Making Concrete” and a site visit to RMC plant, Mangaluru to study the mixing of concrete and many precautions to be taken in a plant in the making of concrete in detail.

“Safety in Construction” was addressed through a presentation by a safety and construction expert, Er. B .V. Rameshbabu, who explained in his presentation the various aspects and precautionary measures to be taken at the construction site followed by the fire department’s, Chief Fire Officer, Mr. H. S. Varadarajan explaining and demonstrating how to take precaution and prevent fire.

On day-5 of the Finishing School Programme on `Building Construction, Supervision and Management’, Dr. Subhash C. Yaragal, Professor, NITK engaged a session for the graduating civil engineers on “Quantity Estimation.” Er. Arunprabha addressed the topic on Construction of Pile Foundations and PVD Approaches for Tackling Difficult Soils.

Finishing School Programme for Civil Engineers Gains Momentum

The ten-day Finishing School Programme for Civil Engineers on `Building Construction, Supervision and Management’, saw students acquiring knowledge and skills from veterans in the field of civil engineering. Er. Premananda Shenoy, Structural Consultant at Roy and Shenoy gave a presentation on “Entrepreneurship Opportunities in the Civil Engineering Field” and Dr. A. V. Pradeepkumar, Professor, JNN College of Engineering, Shivamoga, gave more insights on the subject. `Design and Construction of Concrete Foundations in Difficult Soils’, was a session engaged by Dr. B. M. Sunil, with Er. M. M. Kamath throwing light on legal issues through the topic `Disputes in Contract Management.’

Students spent a whole day understanding the importance of concrete mix design from an Ultratech Cement Consultant Er. Nageshputtaswamy. On the succeeding days, presentations and talks on topics such as “Types of Cement & Cement Manufacturing Process” by Mr. Anil K. Pillai, Deputy General Manager –Technical, Ramco Cement, “Next Generation Concrete” by Mr. Nagesh Puttaswamy Regional Head, Technical Services, , Ultratech Cement Ltd., Dr. K. S. Babunarayan, Professor, NITK-S on “Case Studies Of Failures In Construction”, and “Form Work and Scaffolding Design” by Nagesh P.

Participants were seen eagerly absorbing and enhancing their skills through a presentation on “Communication Skills for Civil Engineers” by Er. Premananda Shenoy, Chief Consultant & Managing Partner at Roy & Shenoy, followed by a talk on “Computer Applications in the Civil Engineering Field” by Mr. Anil Hedge, Structural Consultant, Vimal Anil Civil & Structural Engineers. Post-lunch, Er. K. B. Keerthan Kumar, Professor Manager (Marketing/ Technical), MCF, spoke on “Good Construction Practices & Non Destructive Testing for Buildings” followed with another session on “Project Management” by Dr. Gangadhar Mahesh, Assistant Professor, NITK-S.

The main objective of the Finishing School is to upgrade the fresh engineering graduates as per industry requirements and help them to get better job opportunities. This will indirectly help industries as they can put the new recruits on the job without much training.

Placement Training by Ethnus Training Institute Gets Underway in the Campus

Placement training for pre-final year engineering students scheduled from the 20th of January to the 29th of January 2015 commenced in the Campus. Trainers from Ethnus Training Institute are conducting various sessions for the students.

Mr. Sharathchandra, Mrs. Laxmi Shetty and Ms. Megha N., Assistant Professors, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering attended a three-day Faculty Development Workshop on “Cadence OrCAD/Pspice PCB Design-The Analysis & Design of Electronic Circuits & Systems” organized by Canara College of Engineering, Bejanpadavu in collaboration with Entuple Technologies Ltd., Bangalore. Mr. Venugopal D. Kulkarni, Senior Technical Consultant at Entuple Technologies Ltd. was the resource person for the workshop. He has more than twenty years of experience in development and training in Mixed and Analog Design.

The workshop dealt with the study of effective and advanced Cadence OrCAD tool Techniques. Emphasis was on providing hands-on experience in complete PCB design flow, right from capturing schematic to floor planning and routing using OrCAD.

Mrs. Priya R. Kamath and Mrs. Ankitha K., Assistant Professors Department of Computer Science & Engineering, attended a five-day Deep Dive Faculty Enablement Program on FP 4.0 in Infosys, Mudipu, Mangaluru. The faculty members who attended the programme were briefed about the changes in the content of the campus connect programme. They were given an overview about Computational Problem Solving, Object Oriented Programming using JAVA, Relational Database Management Systems, Web Technology and Software Engineering.

Well-Wishers Visit the Campus

Well-wishers of Sahyadri visited the Campus and had an interaction with the Chairman and Principal. Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, addressed them with a PPT presentation on the professional growth of Sahyadri from its inception, focusing on project and research.

Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, addressed the guests and expressed his happiness for supporting the College from the beginning. The guests did acknowledge that the College is the best place in the region for any student to become professional in all respects with additional inter-personnel skills and subject proficiency.

Workshop on Pathway to Success for Teachers Held in the Campus

A three-day workshop organized by the Department of Training for the Faculty on “Pathway to Success for Teachers” was held in the Campus. The resource persons, Mrs. Bharathi Singh, Founder and Chief, Sa-Mudra Personality School and Mr. K. C. Janardhan, Corporate Trainer and Vice - Chairman, Karnataka -British South India Council of Commerce (BSICC), UK, touched upon various aspects of training, self development, skills of trainers, and student expectation of management. They also looked at the classroom challenges and how to resolve them.

Day-2 of the workshop on `Pathway to Success for Teachers’ commenced with the recollection of learning from day-1 describing the areas of self- development, how to enrich skills, knowledge & attitude, skills of a trainer and personal qualities of a trainer with lots of activities and participation from the faculty members.

On the third and concluding day of the workshop on `Pathway to Success for Teachers’ the day commenced with practical presentations by the faculty relating to topics like negotiation skills, fresher employability skills and communication skills. At the Valedictory, Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, Dr. Molly Chaudhuri, HoD, Training department, Prof. Umashankar B. S., Dean Academics and Mrs. Shreelatha U. A., AAO were present. A memento was presented to the resource persons and participants gave their positive feedback and appreciated the training programme.

Two-day Workshop on `Self-Esteem and Work Ethics’ Held at CODP

A two-day workshop on ''Self-Esteem & Work Ethics" for the faculty members was inaugurated at CODP, Mangalore. The resource person Mr. Chandrashekar was the former Joint Director, DTE; an eminent motivational speaker and corporate trainer. He touched upon a variety of topics which build 'Self-Esteem' and help build `Work Ethics' which are essential, both for the individual and for the organisational growth. He emphasized on the paradigms in life and the importance of character ethics for building self-esteem

On the concluding day of the workshop Mr. Chandrashekar emphasized the 7 habits of effective people, the four levels of leadership, characteristics of good work ethics and building strong work ethics to enhance the organizational culture. Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal and Dr. Molly Chaudhuri, HoD, Training department, were present for the Valedictory. The workshop will be held for batch 2 at CODP.

Faculty Member Presents Research Paper in International Conference

Mrs. Jyothi F. Serrao, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics has presented a research paper titled “Crystal and Surface Structural Studies on Spin Coated Ga-doped ZnO thin films” in the International Intra-disciplinary Conference on the Frontiers of Crystallography IICFC-2014, held at Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa College, Madikeri , Kodagu.

Sahyadri Students Represent VTU at Inter-University Competitions

Jayashree and Carol R. Monteiro, Semester VII, of the departments of Computer Science & Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering respectively, represented VTU at the 75th All India Level Athletic Competitions held at Swarajya Maidan, Moodbidri, Mangalore. Carol R. Monteiro was placed twelfth in High Jump and Jayashree was placed twenty-first in the five Kilometers walk.

Mrs. Nithisha Rodrigues, Physical Education Director, was nominated as Coach of VTU Athletic team which participated in the 75th All India Inter-University Athletic Championship held at Swarajya Maidan, Moodbidri, Mangalore.
