Sahyadrians at 103rd Indian Science Congress

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman and Mrs. Prasanna Bhandary, Secretary, Bhandary Foundation, along with students and faculty members visited the 103rd Indian Science Congress 2016 held at University of Mysore from the 3-7 January 2016. Organisations such as DRDO, ISRO and top universities from all over India showcased their facilities in this exhibition.

The theme chosen for this session of the Indian Science Congress was “Science and Technology for Indigenous Development in India”. The indigenous technology and research by scientists will go a long way in improving the quality of life of the common man and also the economy of the country. To achieve this goal, a lot of interactions, collaborations, resource sharing and exchange of ideas must happen. With nearly 20,000 brilliant brains converging at the 103rd Science Congress, a road map for the indigenous science and technology will be drawn more specifically to meet the societal expectation of the country.

Twenty-four students of the second, fourth, sixth and eighth semesters took part in the exhibition headed by Mr. Nishanth and Mr. John Nikhil, Technical Trainers of , DTLabz; the hands-on lab. The Chairman encouraged the students to take part in upcoming exhibitions such as these in the future too.

Students, Preetham Kumar, Semester VIII, Computer Science & Engineering, Shreya M, Semester VIII, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Ms. Achala Shetty members of Sahyadri edu Dreamers R&D Pvt. Ltd. participated as exhibitors.

Dr. Jayaram, Mr. Ashwath Rao, Mr. Duddela Sai Prashanth, and Mr. Harisha, faculty members were also privileged to attend the 103rd Indian Science Congress 2016. The visit to the 103rd Indian Science Congress gave Sahyadrians first-hand information of latest developments in science & technology taking place in the country.

The Indian Science Congress Association was established in the year 1914 with the sole motto of illuminating the path of science and technology in the country. Today, when India is emerging strongly as a developing country and its economy getting stronger, it should not be forgotten that the contribution of science and technology has helped India immensely to achieve this feat.

Faculty Development Program on Research Methodology

In continuation of the MoU Signed between Mangalore University and Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management to promote research among the faculty members of UG Colleges, The Department of Business Administration organized a one-day Faculty Development Programme on Research Methodology in the campus. Around 60 faculty members from 30 colleges affiliated to Mangalore University participated in the programme.

Dr P S Yadapadithya, Professor, Department of Commerce, Mangalore University, inaugurated the programme. Dr Umesh M Bhushi, Principal presided over the function and Dr A P Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration provided a brief overview of the programme. Dr Vishal Samartha chief of the programme proposed the vote of thanks.

Dr Raveendranatha Shenory, Director School of Management, Manipal, Dr Mallikarunappa, Professor, Department of Competence, Mangalore University and Dr Krishna Kothai, Development Scientist, Azim Premiji University, were the key resource persons.

The main objective of the FDP was to introduce various research methods and orient participants towards developing their own research plans, with due attention to every stage of research. The programme enabled researchers to define the research problem and develop an appropriate methodology for their research and help researchers to identify research gaps and write a literature review.

Extensive Survey Camp Underway for Civil Engineering Students

The 15-day extensive survey camp for the students of Semester VI of the Department of Civil Engineering is in progress at Siddapur as part of their curriculum. The survey camp aims to bridge the gap between industry requirements and current day academics. Students will be completing four projects during this tenure.

Students visited the Varahi hydropower plant at Hosangadi and interacted with the engineers. They witnessed the power generation process and the components involved in it and gained practical knowledge.

Research Paper by Director R & D Published in International Journal

Dr. Manjappa A research paper entitled "Enzymatic Depolymerisation Of Hemicellulose Into Arabinose And Xylose By Aerobic Bacteria" by Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director (R&D, Consultancy) has been published in the December 2015 issue of the International Journal of Engineering Research & Science IJOER-DEC-2015-23 ISSN: 2395-6992 Impact Factor: 1.436.

Indian Engineering Olympiad a Pan-India Event to Test Engineering Aptitude

Indian Engineering Olympiad (IEO) is a pan-India event that offers a real test of engineering aptitude for the engineering students in their respective fields on a national platform. Over 1,20,000 students, including several from the best of the engineering colleges across the country are expected to participate in the contest to test their skills against each other.

IEO (2016) will be conducted on Sunday, 21st February 2016 across 65+ centers in India. All students in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year engineering are eligible to appear for the exam. Registrations are now open and can be done online on the IEO website www.engineeringolympiad.in. Please note that there is NO registration fee to be paid to participate in IEO.

The format and the syllabus of the exam are designed akin to many competitive tests that the students are expected to go through in their further academic and career pursuits. Participating in an Olympiad contest such as the IEO will help students assess their strengths and performance relative to the competition. In addition to detailed performance statistics, participants will receive counseling inputs to help them plan their career options and preparation for the same.

IEO awards not only the best performing students but also the best performing colleges. Students are encouraged to participate in this exam and do their best to win the coveted rewards for themselves and the college.
